Asymptotics of the gradient of solutions to the perfect conductivity problem

In the perfect conductivity problem of composite material, the gradient of solutions can be arbitrarily large when two inclusions are located very close. To characterize the singular behavior of the gradient in the narrow region between two inclusions, we capture the leading term of the gradient and give a fairly sharp description of such asymptotics.

Homogeneous solutions of stationary Navier-Stokes equations with isolated singularities on the unit sphere. III. Two singularities

All $(-1)$-homogeneous axisymmetric no-swirl solutions of incompressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations in three dimension which are smooth on the unit sphere minus north and south poles have been classified in our earlier work as a four dimensional surface with boundary. In this paper, we establish near the no-swirl solution surface existence, non-existence and uniqueness results on $(-1)$-homogeneous axisymmetric solutions with nonzero swirl which are smooth on the unit sphere minus north and south poles.

Compactness of conformal metrics with constant $Q$-curvature. I

We study compactness for nonnegative solutions of the fourth order constant $Q$-curvature equations on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$. If the $Q$-curvature equals $-1$, we prove that all solutions are universally bounded. If the $Q$-curvature is $1$, assuming that Paneitz operator's kernel is trivial and its Green function is positive, we establish universal energy bounds on manifolds which are either locally conformally flat (LCF) or of dimension $\le 9$. Moreover, assuming in addition that a positive mass type theorem holds for the Paneitz operator, we prove compactness in $C^4$. Positive mass type theorems have been verified recently on LCF manifolds or manifolds of dimension $\le 7$, when the Yamabe invariant is positive. We also prove that, for dimension $\ge 8$, the Weyl tensor has to vanish at possible blow up points of a sequence of blowing up solutions. This implies the compactness result in dimension $\ge 8$ when the Weyl tensor does not vanish anywhere. To overcome difficulties stemming from fourth order elliptic equations, we develop a blow up analysis procedure via integral equations.

Towards a Liouville theorem for continuous viscosity solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations in conformal geometry

We study entire continuous viscosity solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations involving the conformal Hessian. We prove the strong comparison principle and Hopf Lemma for (non-uniformly) elliptic equations when one of the competitors is $C^{1,1}$. We obtain as a consequence a Liouville theorem for entire solutions which are approximable by $C^{1,1}$ solutions on larger and larger compact domains, and, in particular, for entire $C^{1,1}_{\rm loc}$ solutions: they are either constants or standard bubbles.

Existence and uniqueness to a fully non-linear version of the Loewner-Nirenberg problem

We consider the problem of finding on a given Euclidean domain $Ω$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ a complete conformally flat metric whose Schouten curvature $A$ satisfies some equation of the form $f(λ(-A)) = 1$. This generalizes a problem considered by Loewner and Nirenberg for the scalar curvature. We prove the existence and uniqueness of such metric when the boundary $\partialΩ$ is a smooth bounded hypersurface (of codimension one). When $\partialΩ$ contains a compact smooth submanifold $Σ$ of higher codimension with $\partialΩ\setminusΣ$ being compact, we also give a `sharp' condition for the divergence to infinity of the conformal factor near $Σ$ in terms of the codimension.

A new result for global existence and boundedness of solutions to a parabolic--parabolic Keller--Segel system with logistic source

We consider the following fully parabolic Keller--Segel system with logistic source $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} u_t=Δu-χ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v)+ au-μu^2,\quad x\in Ω, t>0, \disp{v_t=Δv- v +u},\quad x\in Ω, t>0, \end{array}\right.\eqno(KS) $$ over a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N(N\geq1)$, with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$, the parameters $a\in \mathbb{R}, μ>0, χ>0$. It is proved that if $μ>0$, then $(KS)$ admits a global weak solution, while if $μ>\frac{(N-2)_{+}}{N}χC^{\frac{1}{\frac{N}{2}+1}}_{\frac{N}{2}+1}$, then $(KS)$ possesses a global classical solution which is bounded, where $C^{\frac{1}{\frac{N} {2}+1}}_{\frac{N}{2}+1}$ is a positive constant which is corresponding to the maximal Sobolev regularity. Apart from this, we also show that if $a = 0$ and $μ>\frac{(N-2)_{+}}{N}χC^{\frac{1}{\frac{N}{2}+1}}_{\frac{N}{2}+1}$, then both $u(\cdot, t)$ and $v(\cdot, t)$ decay to zero with respect to the norm in $L^\infty(Ω)$ as $t\rightarrow\infty$.

Homogeneous solutions of stationary Navier-Stokes equations with isolated singularities on the unit sphere. I. One singularity

We classify all $(-1)-$homogeneous axisymmetric no swirl solutions of incompressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations in three dimension which are smooth on the unit sphere minus the south pole, parameterize them as a two dimensional surface with boundary, and analyze their pressure profiles near the north pole. Then we prove that there is a curve of $(-1)-$homogeneous axisymmetric solutions with nonzero swirl, having the same smoothness property, emanating from every point of the interior and one part of the boundary of the solution surface. Moreover we prove that there is no such curve of solutions for any point on the other part of the boundary. We also establish asymptotic expansions for every (-1)-homogeneous axisymmetric solutions in a neighborhood of the singular point on the unit sphere.

Homogeneous solutions of stationary Navier-Stokes equations with isolated singularities on the unit sphere. II. Classification of axisymmetric no-swirl solutions

We classify all (-1)-homogeneous axisymmetric no-swirl solutions of incompressible stationary Navier-Stokes equations in three dimension which are smooth on the unit sphere minus the south and north poles, parameterizing them as a four dimensional surface with boundary in appropriate function spaces. Then we establish smoothness properties of the solution surface in the four parameters. The smoothness properties will be used in a subsequent paper where we study the existence of (-1)-homogeneous axisymmetric solutions with non-zero swirl on $\mathbb{S}^2\setminus\{S,N\}$, emanating from the four dimensional solution surface.

Comparison principles and Lipschitz regularity for some nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations

We establish interior Lipschitz regularity for continuous viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear, conformally invariant, degenerate elliptic equations. As a by-product of our method, we also prove a weak form of the strong comparison principle, which we refer to as the principle of propagation of touching points, for operators of the form $\nabla^2 ψ+ L(x,ψ,\nabla ψ)$ which are non-decreasing in $ψ$.

Multi-bump solutions of $-Δu=K(x)u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}$ on lattices in $R^n$

We consider critical exponent semi-linear elliptic equation with coefficient K(x) periodic in its first k variables, with 2k smaller than n-2. Under some natural conditions on K near a critical point, we prove the existence of multi-bump solutions where the centers of bumps can be placed in some lattices in Rk, including infinite lattices. We also show that for 2k greater than or equal to n-2, no such solutions exist.

The Nirenberg problem and its generalizations: A unified approach

Making use of integral representations, we develop a unified approach to establish blow up profiles, compactness and existence of positive solutions of the conformally invariant equations $P_σ(v)= Kv^{\frac{n+2σ}{n-2σ}}$ on the standard unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ for all $σ\in (0,n/2)$, where $P_σ$ is the intertwining operator of order $2σ$. Finding positive solutions of these equations is equivalent to seeking metrics in the conformal class of the standard metric on spheres with prescribed certain curvatures. When $σ=1$, it is the prescribing scalar curvature problem or the Nirenberg problem, and when $σ=2$, it is the prescribing $Q$-curvature problem.

On a fractional Nirenberg problem, part II: existence of solutions

This paper is a continuation of our earlier work "[T. Jin, Y.Y. Li and J. Xiong, On a fractional Nirenberg problem, part I: blow up analysis and compactness of solutions, to appear in J. Eur. Math. Soc.]", where compactness results were given on a fractional Nirenberg problem. We prove two existence results stated there. We also obtain a fractional Aubin inequality.

A response to an article of Xu-Jia Wang

This is a response to the article arXiv:1212.3130v1 by Xu-Jia Wang, where he attempted to address a mathematical question we raised. We point out that, and explain why, the article is far from answering our objections. Moreover, we have more recently found more serious trouble in the paper under discussion based on the false assertion there that minimal radial functions of superharmonic functions (with respect to a conformal Laplacian of a Riemannian metric) are superharmonic.

A compactness theorem for a fully nonlinear Yamabe problem under a lower Ricci curvature bound

We prove compactness of solutions of a fully nonlinear Yamabe problem satisfying a lower Ricci curvature bound, when the manifold is not conformally diffeomorphic to the standard sphere. This allows us to prove the existence of solutions when the associated cone $Γ$ satisfies $μ^+_Γ\le 1$, which includes the $σ_k-$Yamabe problem for $k$ not smaller than half of the dimension of the manifold.
