Morphological transitions of elastic filaments in shear flow

The morphological dynamics, instabilities and transitions of elastic filaments in viscous flows underlie a wealth of biophysical processes from flagellar propulsion to intracellular streaming, and are also key to deciphering the rheological behavior of many complex fluids and soft materials. Here, we combine experiments and computational modeling to elucidate the dynamical regimes and morphological transitions of elastic Brownian filaments in a simple shear flow. Actin filaments are employed as an experimental model system and their conformations are investigated through fluorescence microscopy in microfluidic channels. Simulations matching the experimental conditions are also performed using inextensible Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and non-local slender-body hydrodynamics in the presence of thermal fluctuations, and agree quantitatively with observations. We demonstrate that filament dynamics in this system is primarily governed by a dimensionless elasto-viscous number comparing viscous drag forces to elastic bending forces, with thermal fluctuations only playing a secondary role. While short and rigid filaments perform quasi-periodic tumbling motions, a buckling instability arises above a critical flow strength. A second transition to strongly-deformed shapes occurs at a yet larger value of the elasto-viscous number and is characterized by the appearance of localized high-curvature bends that propagate along the filaments in apparent "snaking" motions. A theoretical model for the so far unexplored onset of snaking accurately predicts the transition and explains the observed dynamics. For the first time, we present a complete characterization of filament morphologies and transitions as a function of elasto-viscous number and scaled persistence length and demonstrate excellent agreement between theory, experiments and simulations.

Mobile Robot Localisation and Navigation Using LEGO NXT and Ultrasonic Sensor

Mobile robots are becoming increasingly important both for individuals and industries. Mobile robotic technology is not only utilised by experts in this field but is also very popular among amateurs. However, implementing a mobile robot to perform tasks autonomously can be expensive because of the need for various types of sensors and the high price of robot platforms. Hence, in this paper we present a mobile robot localisation and navigation system which uses a LEGO ultrasonic sensor in an indoor map based on the LEGO MINDSTORM NXT. This provides an affordable and ready-to-use option for most robot fans. In this paper, an effective method is proposed to extract useful information from the distorted readings collected by the ultrasonic sensor. Then, the particle filter is used to localise the robot. After robot's position is estimated, a sampling-based path planning method is proposed for the robot navigation. This method reduces the robot accumulative motion error by minimising robot turning times and covering distances. The robot localisation and navigation algorithms are implemented in MATLAB. Simulation results show an average accuracy between 1 and 3 cm for three different indoor map locations. Furthermore, experiments performed in a real setup show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Real-Time Stereo Vision for Road Surface 3-D Reconstruction

Stereo vision techniques have been widely used in civil engineering to acquire 3-D road data. The two important factors of stereo vision are accuracy and speed. However, it is very challenging to achieve both of them simultaneously and therefore the main aim of developing a stereo vision system is to improve the trade-off between these two factors. In this paper, we present a real-time stereo vision system used for road surface 3-D reconstruction. The proposed system is developed from our previously published 3-D reconstruction algorithm where the perspective view of the target image is first transformed into the reference view, which not only increases the disparity accuracy but also improves the processing speed. Then, the correlation cost between each pair of blocks is computed and stored in two 3-D cost volumes. To adaptively aggregate the matching costs from neighbourhood systems, bilateral filtering is performed on the cost volumes. This greatly reduces the ambiguities during stereo matching and further improves the precision of the estimated disparities. Finally, the subpixel resolution is achieved by conducting a parabola interpolation and the subpixel disparity map is used to reconstruct the 3-D road surface. The proposed algorithm is implemented on an NVIDIA GTX 1080 GPU for the real-time purpose. The experimental results illustrate that the reconstruction accuracy is around 3 mm.

Real-Time Subpixel Fast Bilateral Stereo

Stereo vision technique has been widely used in robotic systems to acquire 3-D information. In recent years, many researchers have applied bilateral filtering in stereo vision to adaptively aggregate the matching costs. This has greatly improved the accuracy of the estimated disparity maps. However, the process of filtering the whole cost volume is very time consuming and therefore the researchers have to resort to some powerful hardware for the real-time purpose. This paper presents the implementation of fast bilateral stereo on a state-of-the-art GPU. By highly exploiting the parallel computing architecture of the GPU, the fast bilateral stereo performs in real time when processing the Middlebury stereo datasets.

Well-posedness and global existence of 2D viscous shallow water system in Besov spaces

In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in Besov spaces. We firstly prove the local well-posedness of this problem in $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>max\{1,\frac{2}{p}\}$, $1\leq p,r\leq \infty$ by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then we can prove the global existence of the system with small enough initial data in $B^s_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $1\leq p\leq2$, $1\leq r<\infty$ and $s>\frac{2}{p}$. Our obtained results generalize and cover the recent results in \cite{W}.

Global existence and well-posedness of 2D viscous shallow water system in Sobolev spaces with low regularity

In this paper we consider the Cauchy problem for 2D viscous shallow water system in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. We first prove the local well-posedness of this problem by using the Littlewood-Paley theory, the Bony decomposition, and the theories of transport equations and transport diffusion equations. Then, we get the global existence of the system with small initial data in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$, $s>1$. Our obtained result improves the recent result in \cite{W}

Long-time existence of mean curvature flow with external force fields

In this paper, we study the evolution of submannifold moving by mean curvature minus a external force field. We prove that the flow has a long-time smooth solution for all time under almost optimal conditions. Those conditions are that the second fundamental form on the initial submanifolds is not too large, the external force field, with its any order derivatives, is bounded, and the field is convex with its eigenvalues satisfying a pinch inequality.
