MiMoTable: A Multi-scale Spreadsheet Benchmark with Meta Operations for Table Reasoning

Extensive research has been conducted to explore the capability of Large Language Models (LLMs) for table reasoning and has significantly improved the performance on existing benchmarks. However, tables and user questions in real-world applications are more complex and diverse, presenting an unignorable gap compared to the existing benchmarks. To fill the gap, we propose a \textbf{M}ult\textbf{i}-scale spreadsheet benchmark with \textbf{M}eta \textbf{o}perations for \textbf{Table} reasoning, named as MiMoTable. Specifically, MiMoTable incorporates two key features. First, the tables in MiMoTable are all spreadsheets used in real-world scenarios, which cover seven domains and contain different types. Second, we define a new criterion with six categories of meta operations for measuring the difficulty of each question in MiMoTable, simultaneously as a new perspective for measuring the difficulty of the existing benchmarks. Experimental results show that Claude-3.5-Sonnet achieves the best performance with 77.4\% accuracy, indicating that there is still significant room to improve for LLMs on MiMoTable. Furthermore, we grade the difficulty of existing benchmarks according to our new criteria. Experiments have shown that the performance of LLMs decreases as the difficulty of benchmarks increases, thereby proving the effectiveness of our proposed new criterion.

GCUNet: A GNN-Based Contextual Learning Network for Tertiary Lymphoid Structure Semantic Segmentation in Whole Slide Image

We focus on tertiary lymphoid structure (TLS) semantic segmentation in whole slide image (WSI). Unlike TLS binary segmentation, TLS semantic segmentation identifies boundaries and maturity, which requires integrating contextual information to discover discriminative features. Due to the extensive scale of WSI (e.g., 100,000 \times 100,000 pixels), the segmentation of TLS is usually carried out through a patch-based strategy. However, this prevents the model from accessing information outside of the patches, limiting the performance. To address this issue, we propose GCUNet, a GNN-based contextual learning network for TLS semantic segmentation. Given an image patch (target) to be segmented, GCUNet first progressively aggregates long-range and fine-grained context outside the target. Then, a Detail and Context Fusion block (DCFusion) is designed to integrate the context and detail of the target to predict the segmentation mask. We build four TLS semantic segmentation datasets, called TCGA-COAD, TCGA-LUSC, TCGA-BLCA and INHOUSE-PAAD, and make the former three datasets (comprising 826 WSIs and 15,276 TLSs) publicly available to promote the TLS semantic segmentation. Experiments on these datasets demonstrate the superiority of GCUNet, achieving at least 7.41% improvement in mF1 compared with SOTA.

Multi-color Wavefront Sensor using Talbot effect for High-order Harmonic Generation

We present a novel method for multi-color wavefront measurement of high-order harmonic generation beams using the Talbot effect, validated both theoretically and experimentally for the first time. Each harmonic maintains a unique wavefront and produces an independent set of self-images along the optical axis.We achieved the wavefronts reconstruction of three harmonics in a single measurement scan, expanding the spectrally-resolved capability of the conventional Talbot effect wavefront sensor. This breakthrough introduces a novel tool for studying the multi-color wavefront in high-order harmonic generation, unlocking the potential to investigate spatiotemporal ultrafast nonlinear dynamics in attosecond pulse formation on a shot-by-shot basis.

Multiuser Beamforming for Partially-Connected Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO

Multiuser beamforming is considered for partially-connected millimeter wave massive MIMO systems. Based on perfect channel state information (CSI), a low-complexity hybrid beamforming scheme that decouples the analog beamformer and the digital beamformer is proposed to maximize the sum-rate. The analog beamformer design is modeled as a phase alignment problem to harvest the array gain. Given the analog beamformer, the digital beamformer is designed by solving a weighted minimum mean squared error problem. Then based on imperfect CSI, an analog-only beamformer design scheme is proposed, where the design problem aims at maximizing the desired signal power on the current user and minimizing the power on the other users to mitigate the multiuser interference. The original problem is then transformed into a series of independent beam nulling subproblems, where an efficient iterative algorithm using the majorization-minimization framework is proposed to solve the subproblems. Simulation results show that, under perfect CSI, the proposed scheme achieves almost the same sum-rate performance as the existing schemes but with lower computational complexity; and under imperfect CSI, the proposed analog-only beamforming design scheme can effectively mitigate the multiuser interference.

Continuous-Time Channel Prediction Based on Tensor Neural Ordinary Differential Equation

Channel prediction is critical to address the channel aging issue in mobile scenarios. Existing channel prediction techniques are mainly designed for discrete channel prediction, which can only predict the future channel in a fixed time slot per frame, while the other intra-frame channels are usually recovered by interpolation. However, these approaches suffer from a serious interpolation loss, especially for mobile millimeter wave communications. To solve this challenging problem, we propose a tensor neural ordinary differential equation (TN-ODE) based continuous-time channel prediction scheme to realize the direct prediction of intra-frame channels. Specifically, inspired by the recently developed continuous mapping model named neural ODE in the field of machine learning, we first utilize the neural ODE model to predict future continuous-time channels. To improve the channel prediction accuracy and reduce computational complexity, we then propose the TN-ODE scheme to learn the structural characteristics of the high-dimensional channel by low dimensional learnable transform. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme is able to achieve higher intra-frame channel prediction accuracy than existing schemes.

Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections and Stream Interaction Regions observed by Tianwen-1 and Maven at Mars

Tianwen-1 spacecraft (Wan et al. 2020) is China's first Mars exploration mission. The Mars Orbiter Magnetometer (MOMAG) is a scientific instrument aboard the Tianwen-1 mission that is designed to study magnetic fields at Mars, including the solar wind to the magnetosheath and the ionosphere. Using the first Tianwen-1/MOMAG data that is publicly available, we present interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) and stream interaction region (SIR) catalogues based on in-situ observations at Mars between November 16, 2021, and December 31, 2021. We compared the magnetic field intensity and vector magnetic field measurements from Tianwen-1/MOMAG and Mars Atmospheric Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN)/MAG during the ICME and SIR interval and found a generally good consistency between them. Due to MAVEN's orbital adjustment since 2019, the Tianwen-1/MOMAG instrument is currently the almost unique interplanetary magnetic field monitor at Mars. The observations indicate that the MOMAG instrument on Tianwen-1 is performing well and can provide accurate measurements of the vector magnetic field in the near-Mars solar wind space. The multi-point observations combining MOMAG, MINPA, and MEPA on board Tianwen-1 with MAG, SWIA, and STATIC on board MAVEN will open a window to systematically study the characteristic of ICMEs and SIRs at Mars, and their influences on the Martian atmosphere and ionosphere.

In-flight Calibration of the Magnetometer on the Mars Orbiter of Tianwen-1

Mars Orbiter Magnetometer (MOMAG) is one of seven science payloads onboard Tianwen-1's orbiter. Unlike most of the satellites, Tianwen-1's orbiter is not magnetically cleaned, and the boom where placed the magnetometer's sensors is not long enough. These pose many challenges to the magnetic field data processing. In this paper, we introduce the in-flight calibration process of the Tianwen-1/MOMAG. The magnetic interference from the spacecraft, including spacecraft generated dynamic field and slowly-changing offsets are cleaned in sequence. Then the calibrated magnetic field data are compared with the data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN). We find that some physical structures in the solar wind are consistent between the two data sets, and the distributions of the magnetic field strength in the solar wind are very similar. These results suggest that the in-flight calibration of the MOMAG is successful and the MOMAG provides reliable data for scientific research.

The Mars Orbiter Magnetometer of Tianwen-1: In-flight Performance and First Science Results

Mars Orbiter MAGnetometer (MOMAG) is a scientifc instrument onboard the orbiter of China's first mission for Mars -- Tianwen-1. It started to routinely measure the magnetic field from the solar wind to magnetic pile-up region surrounding Mars since November 13, 2021. Here we present its in-flight performance and first science results based on the first one and a half months' data. By comparing with the magnetic field data in the solar wind from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN), the magnetic field by MOMAG is at the same level in magnitude, and the same magnetic structures with the similar variations in three components could be found in MOMAG data. In the first one and a half months, we recognize 158 clear bow shock (BS) crossings from MOMAG data, whose locations statistically match well with the modeled average BS. We also identify 5 pairs of simultaneous BS crossings of the Tianwen-1's orbiter and MAVEN. These BS crossings confirm the global shape of modeled BS as well as the south-north asymmetry of the Martian BS. Two presented cases in this paper suggest that the BS is probably more dynamic at flank than near the nose. So far, MOMAG performs well, and provides accurate magnetic field vectors. MOMAG is continuously scanning the magnetic field surrounding Mars. These measurements complemented by observations from MAVEN will undoubtedly advance our understanding of the plasma environment of Mars.

AMDET: Attention based Multiple Dimensions EEG Transformer for Emotion Recognition

Affective computing is an important branch of artificial intelligence, and with the rapid development of brain computer interface technology, emotion recognition based on EEG signals has received broad attention. It is still a great challenge to effectively explore the multi-dimensional information in the EEG data in spite of a large number of deep learning methods. In this paper, we propose a deep model called Attention-based Multiple Dimensions EEG Transformer (AMDET), which can exploit the complementarity among the spectral-spatial-temporal features of EEG data by employing the multi-dimensional global attention mechanism. We transformed the original EEG data into 3D temporal-spectral-spatial representations and then the AMDET would use spectral-spatial transformer encoder layer to extract effective features in the EEG signal and concentrate on the critical time frame with a temporal attention layer. We conduct extensive experiments on the DEAP, SEED, and SEED-IV datasets to evaluate the performance of AMDET and the results outperform the state-of-the-art baseline on three datasets. Accuracy rates of 97.48%, 96.85%, 97.17%, 87.32% were achieved in the DEAP-Arousal, DEAP-Valence, SEED, and SEED-IV datasets, respectively. We also conduct extensive experiments to explore the possible brain regions that influence emotions and the coupling of EEG signals. AMDET can perform as well even with few channels which are identified by visualizing what learned model focus on. The accuracy could achieve over 90% even with only eight channels and it is of great use and benefit for practical applications.

PERFECT: A Hyperbolic Embedding for Joint User and Community Alignment

Social network alignment shows fundamental importance in a wide spectrum of applications. To the best of our knowledge, existing studies mainly focus on network alignment at the individual user level, requiring abundant common information between shared individual users. For the networks that cannot meet such requirements, social community structures actually provide complementary and critical information at a slightly coarse-grained level, alignment of which will provide additional information for user alignment. In turn, user alignment also reveals more clues for community alignment. Hence, in this paper, we introduce the problem of joint social network alignment, which aims to align users and communities across social networks simultaneously. Key challenges lie in that 1) how to learn the representations of both users and communities, and 2) how to make user alignment and community alignment benefit from each other. To address these challenges, we first elaborate on the characteristics of real-world networks with the notion of delta-hyperbolicity, and show the superiority of hyperbolic space for representing social networks. Then, we present a novel hyperbolic embedding approach for the joint social network alignment, referred to as PERFECT, in a unified optimization. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets show the superiority of PERFECT in both user alignment and community alignment.

New Framework for Code-Mapping-based Reversible Data Hiding in JPEG Images

Code mapping (CM) is an efficient technique for reversible data hiding (RDH) in JPEG images, which embeds data by constructing a mapping relationship between the used and unused codes in the JPEG bitstream. This study presents a new framework for designing a CM-based RDH method. First, a new code mapping strategy is proposed to suppress file size expansion and improve applicability. Based on our proposed strategy, the mapped codes are redefined by creating a new Huffman table rather than selecting them from the unused codes in the original Huffman table. The critical issue of designing the CM-based RDH method, that is, constructing code mapping, is converted into a combinatorial optimization problem. This study proposes a novel CM-based RDH method that utilizes a genetic algorithm (GA). The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a high embedding capacity with no signal distortion while suppressing file size expansion.

Attention-Guided Black-box Adversarial Attacks with Large-Scale Multiobjective Evolutionary Optimization

Fooling deep neural networks (DNNs) with the black-box optimization has become a popular adversarial attack fashion, as the structural prior knowledge of DNNs is always unknown. Nevertheless, recent black-box adversarial attacks may struggle to balance their attack ability and visual quality of the generated adversarial examples (AEs) in tackling high-resolution images. In this paper, we propose an attention-guided black-box adversarial attack based on the large-scale multiobjective evolutionary optimization, termed as LMOA. By considering the spatial semantic information of images, we firstly take advantage of the attention map to determine the perturbed pixels. Instead of attacking the entire image, reducing the perturbed pixels with the attention mechanism can help to avoid the notorious curse of dimensionality and thereby improves the performance of attacking. Secondly, a large-scale multiobjective evolutionary algorithm is employed to traverse the reduced pixels in the salient region. Benefiting from its characteristics, the generated AEs have the potential to fool target DNNs while being imperceptible by the human vision. Extensive experimental results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed LMOA on the ImageNet dataset. More importantly, it is more competitive to generate high-resolution AEs with better visual quality compared with the existing black-box adversarial attacks.

Multi-domain Reversible Data Hiding in JPEG

As a branch of reversible data hiding (RDH), reversible data hiding in JEPG is particularly important. Because JPEG images are widely used, it is great significance to study reversible data hiding algorithm for JEPG images. The existing JEPG reversible data methods can be divided into two categories, one is based on Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) coefficients modification, the other is based on Huffman table modification, the methods based on DCT coefficient modification result in large file expansion and visual quality distortion, while the methods based on entropy coding domain modification have low capacity and they may lead to large file expansion. In order to effectively solve the problems in these two kinds of methods, this paper proposes a reversible data hiding in JPEG images methods based on multi-domain modification. In this method, the secret data is divided into two parts by payload distribution algorithm, part of the secret data is first embedded in the DCT coefficient domain, and then the remaining secret data is embedded in the entropy coding domain. Experimental results demonstrate that most JPEG image files with this scheme have smaller file size increment and higher payload than previous RDH schemes.

Ptychographic X-ray Speckle Tracking with Multi Layer Laue Lens Systems

The ever-increasing brightness of synchrotron radiation sources demands improved x-ray optics to utilise their capability for imaging and probing biological cells, nano-devices, and functional matter on the nanometre scale with chemical sensitivity. Hard x-rays are ideal for high-resolution imaging and spectroscopic applications due to their short wavelength, high penetrating power, and chemical sensitivity. The penetrating power that makes x-rays useful for imaging also makes focusing them technologically challenging. Recent developments in layer deposition techniques that have enabled the fabrication of a series of highly focusing x-ray lenses, known as wedged multi layer Laue lenses. Improvements to the lens design and fabrication technique demands an accurate, robust, in-situ and at-wavelength characterisation method. To this end, we have developed a modified form of the speckle-tracking wavefront metrology method, the ptychographic x-ray speckle tracking method, which is capable of operating with highly divergent wavefields. A useful by-product of this method, is that it also provides high-resolution and aberration-free projection images of extended specimens. We report on three separate experiments using this method, where we have resolved ray path angles to within 4 nano-radians with an imaging resolution of 45nm (full-period). This method does not require a high degree of coherence, making it suitable for lab based x-ray sources. Likewise it is robust to errors in the registered sample positions making it suitable for x-ray free-electron laser facilities, where beam pointing fluctuations can be problematic for wavefront metrology.

The natural breakup length of a steady capillary jet

Despite their fundamental and applied importance, a general model to predict the natural breakup length of steady capillary jets has not been proposed yet. In this work, we derive a scaling law with two universal constants to calculate that length as a function of the liquid properties and operating conditions. These constants are determined by fitting the scaling law to a large set of experimental and numerical measurements, including previously published data. Both the experimental and numerical jet lengths conform remarkably well to the proposed scaling law. This law is explained in terms of the growth of perturbations excited by the jet breakup itself.

High Capacity Lossless Data Hiding in JPEG Bitstream Based on General VLC Mapping

JPEG is the most popular image format, which is widely used in our daily life. Therefore, reversible data hiding (RDH) for JPEG images is important. Most of the RDH schemes for JPEG images will cause significant distortions and large file size increments in the marked JPEG image. As a special case of RDH, the lossless data hiding (LDH) technique can keep the visual quality of the marked images no degradation. In this paper, a novel high capacity LDH scheme is proposed. In the JPEG bitstream, not all the variable length codes (VLC) are used to encode image data. By constructing the mapping between the used and unused VLCs, the secret data can be embedded by replacing the used VLC with the unused VLC. Different from the previous schemes, our mapping strategy allows the lengths of unused and used VLCs in a mapping set to be unequal. We present some basic insights into the construction of the mapping relationship. Experimental results show that most of the JPEG images using the proposed scheme obtain smaller file size increments than previous RDH schemes. Furthermore, the proposed scheme can obtain high embedding capacity while keeping the marked JPEG image with no distortion.

Interaction-aware Spatio-temporal Pyramid Attention Networks for Action Classification

Local features at neighboring spatial positions in feature maps have high correlation since their receptive fields are often overlapped. Self-attention usually uses the weighted sum (or other functions) with internal elements of each local feature to obtain its weight score, which ignores interactions among local features. To address this, we propose an effective interaction-aware self-attention model inspired by PCA to learn attention maps. Furthermore, since different layers in a deep network capture feature maps of different scales, we use these feature maps to construct a spatial pyramid and then utilize multi-scale information to obtain more accurate attention scores, which are used to weight the local features in all spatial positions of feature maps to calculate attention maps. Moreover, our spatial pyramid attention is unrestricted to the number of its input feature maps so it is easily extended to a spatio-temporal version. Finally, our model is embedded in general CNNs to form end-to-end attention networks for action classification. Experimental results show that our method achieves the state-of-the-art results on the UCF101, HMDB51 and untrimmed Charades.

Joint RNN Model for Argument Component Boundary Detection

Argument Component Boundary Detection (ACBD) is an important sub-task in argumentation mining; it aims at identifying the word sequences that constitute argument components, and is usually considered as the first sub-task in the argumentation mining pipeline. Existing ACBD methods heavily depend on task-specific knowledge, and require considerable human efforts on feature-engineering. To tackle these problems, in this work, we formulate ACBD as a sequence labeling problem and propose a variety of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based methods, which do not use domain specific or handcrafted features beyond the relative position of the sentence in the document. In particular, we propose a novel joint RNN model that can predict whether sentences are argumentative or not, and use the predicted results to more precisely detect the argument component boundaries. We evaluate our techniques on two corpora from two different genres; results suggest that our joint RNN model obtain the state-of-the-art performance on both datasets.
