Air, bone and soft-tissue Segmentation on 3D brain MRI Using Semantic Classification Random Forest with Auto-Context Model

As bone and air produce weak signals with conventional MR sequences, segmentation of these tissues particularly difficult in MRI. We propose to integrate patch-based anatomical signatures and an auto-context model into a machine learning framework to iteratively segment MRI into air, bone and soft tissue. The proposed semantic classification random forest (SCRF) method consists of a training stage and a segmentation stage. During training stage, patch-based anatomical features were extracted from registered MRI-CT training images, and the most informative features were identified to train a series of classification forests with auto-context model. During segmentation stage, we extracted selected features from MRI and fed them into the well-trained forests for MRI segmentation. The DSC for air, bone and soft tissue obtained with proposed SCRF were 0.976, 0.819 and 0.932, compared to 0.916, 0.673 and 0.830 with RF, 0.942, 0.791 and 0.917 with U-Net. SCRF also demonstrated superior segmentation performances for sensitivity and specificity over RF and U-Net for all three structure types. The proposed segmentation technique could be a useful tool to segment bone, air and soft tissue, and have the potential to be applied to attenuation correction of PET/MRI system, MRI-only radiation treatment planning and MR-guided focused ultrasound surgery.

Machine-learning-based Classification of Lower-grade gliomas and High-grade gliomas using Radiomic Features in Multi-parametric MRI

Objectives: Glioblastomas are the most aggressive brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors with poor prognosis in adults. The purpose of this study is to develop a machine-learning based classification method using radio-mic features of multi-parametric MRI to classify high-grade gliomas (HGG) and low-grade gliomas (LGG). Methods: Multi-parametric MRI of 80 patients, 40 HGG and 40 LGG, with gliomas from the MICCAI BRATs 2015 training database were used in this study. Each patient's T1, contrast-enhanced T1, T2, and Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) MRIs as well as the tumor contours were provided in the database. Using the given contours, radiomic features from all four multi-parametric MRIs were extracted. Of these features, a feature selection process using two-sample T-test and least absolute shrinkage, selection operator (LASSO), and a feature correlation threshold was applied to various combinations of T1, contrast-enhanced T1, T2, and FLAIR MRIs separately. These selected features were then used to train, test, and cross-validate a random forest to differentiate HGG and LGG. Finally, the classification accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the classification method. Results: Optimized parameters showed that on average, the overall accuracy of our classification method was 0.913 or 73 out of 80 correct classifications, 36/40 for HGG and 37/40 for LGG, with an AUC of 0.956 based on the combination with FLAIR, T1, T1c and T2 MRIs. Conclusion: This study shows that radio-mic features derived from multi-parametric MRI could be used to accurately classify high and lower grade gliomas. The radio-mic features from multi-parametric MRI in combination with even more advanced machine learning methods may further elucidate the underlying tumor biology and response to therapy.

Nearly AdS$_2$ holography in quantum CGHS model

In light of recent developments in nearly AdS$_2$ holography, we revisit the semi-classical version of two-dimensional dilaton gravity proposed by Callan, Giddings, Harvey, and Strominger (CGHS) in the early 90's. In distinction to the classical model, the quantum corrected CGHS model has an AdS$_2$ vacuum with a constant dilaton. By turning on a non-normalizable mode of the Liouville field, i.e. the conformal mode of the $2d$ gravity, the explicit breaking of the scale invariance renders the AdS$_2$ vacuum nearly AdS$_2$. As a consequence, there emerges an effective one-dimensional Schwarzian-type theory of pseudo Nambu-Goldstone mode - the boundary graviton - on the boundary of the nearly AdS$_2$ space. We go beyond the linear order perturbation in non-normalizable fluctuations of the Liouville field and work up to the second order. As a main result of our analysis, we clarify the role of the boundary graviton in the holographic framework and show the Virasoro/Schwarzian correspondence, namely that the $2d$ bulk Virasoro constraints are equivalent to the graviton equation of motion of the $1d$ boundary theory, at least, on the $SL(2,R)$ invariant vacuum.

Information Transfer and Black Hole Evaporation via Traversable BTZ Wormholes

We study traversable wormholes by considering the duality between BTZ black holes and two-dimensional conformal field theory on the thermofield double state. The BTZ black holes can be rendered traversable by a negative energy shock wave. Following Gao, Jafferis and Wall [1], we show that the negative energy shock wave is dual to the infinite boost limit of a specific double trace deformation which couples the left and right CFTs. We spell out the mechanism of information transfer through traversable BTZ wormholes, treating the backreaction of the message as a positive energy shockwave. The corresponding spacetime is that of colliding spherical shells in the BTZ black hole, which we explicitly construct. This construction allows us to obtain a bound on the amount of information that can be sent through the wormhole, which is consistent with previous work in the context of nearly $AdS_2$ gravity [2]. Consequently, we define a notion of traversibility of the wormhole and study it in the context of a multiple shock geometry. We argue that the time-dependence of traversibility in this geometry can be connected to certain aspects of the black hole evaporation process, such as the second half of the Page curve. Finally, we examine the claim that traversable wormholes are fast decoders. We find evidence for this by computing the scrambling time in the shockwave background and showing that it is delayed by the presence of the negative energy shock wave.

Zooming in on AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ near a BPS Bound

Any $(d+1)$-dimensional CFT with a $U(1)$ flavor symmetry, a BPS bound and an exactly marginal coupling admits a decoupling limit in which one zooms in on the spectrum close to the bound. This limit is an Inönü-Wigner contraction of $so(2,d+1)\oplus u(1)$ that leads to a relativistic algebra with a scaling generator but no conformal generators. In 2D CFTs, Lorentz boosts are abelian and by adding a second $u(1)$ we find a contraction of two copies of $sl(2,\mathbb{R})\oplus u(1)$ to two copies of $P_2^c$, the 2-dimensional centrally extended Poincaré algebra. We show that the bulk is described by a novel non-Lorentzian geometry that we refer to as pseudo-Newton-Cartan geometry. Both the Chern-Simons action on $sl(2,\mathbb{R})\oplus u(1)$ and the entire phase space of asymptotically AdS$_3$ spacetimes are well-behaved in the corresponding limit if we fix the radial component for the $u(1)$ connection. With this choice, the resulting Newton-Cartan foliation structure is now associated not with time, but with the emerging holographic direction. Since the leaves of this foliation do not mix, the emergence of the holographic direction is much simpler than in AdS$_3$ holography. Furthermore, we show that the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the limit theory consists of a left- and a right-moving warped Virasoro algebra.

Tensor network and ($p$-adic) AdS/CFT

We use the tensor network living on the Bruhat-Tits tree to give a concrete realization of the recently proposed $p$-adic AdS/CFT correspondence (a holographic duality based on the $p$-adic number field $\mathbb{Q}_p$). Instead of assuming the $p$-adic AdS/CFT correspondence, we show how important features of AdS/CFT such as the bulk operator reconstruction and the holographic computation of boundary correlators are automatically implemented in this tensor network.

Ground Truth Bias in External Cluster Validity Indices

It has been noticed that some external CVIs exhibit a preferential bias towards a larger or smaller number of clusters which is monotonic (directly or inversely) in the number of clusters in candidate partitions. This type of bias is caused by the functional form of the CVI model. For example, the popular Rand index (RI) exhibits a monotone increasing (NCinc) bias, while the Jaccard Index (JI) index suffers from a monotone decreasing (NCdec) bias. This type of bias has been previously recognized in the literature. In this work, we identify a new type of bias arising from the distribution of the ground truth (reference) partition against which candidate partitions are compared. We call this new type of bias ground truth (GT) bias. This type of bias occurs if a change in the reference partition causes a change in the bias status (e.g., NCinc, NCdec) of a CVI. For example, NCinc bias in the RI can be changed to NCdec bias by skewing the distribution of clusters in the ground truth partition. It is important for users to be aware of this new type of biased behaviour, since it may affect the interpretations of CVI results. The objective of this article is to study the empirical and theoretical implications of GT bias. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first extensive study of such a property for external cluster validity indices.

Non-Relativistic Chern-Simons Theories and Three-Dimensional Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We show that certain three-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz gravity theories can be written as Chern-Simons gauge theories on various non-relativistic algebras. The algebras are specific extensions of the Bargmann, Newton-Hooke and Schroedinger algebra each of which has the Galilean algebra as a subalgebra. To show this we employ the fact that Horava-Lifshitz gravity corresponds to dynamical Newton-Cartan geometry. In particular, the extended Bargmann (Newton-Hooke) Chern-Simons theory corresponds to projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity with a local U(1) gauge symmetry without (with) a cosmological constant. Moreover we identify an extended Schroedinger algebra containing 3 extra generators that are central with respect to the subalgebra of Galilean boosts, momenta and rotations, for which the Chern-Simons theory gives rise to a novel version of non-projectable conformal Horava-Lifshitz gravity that we refer to as Schroedinger gravity. This theory has a z=2 Lifshitz geometry as a vacuum solution and thus provides a new framework to study Lifshitz holography.

Higher spin holography with Galilean symmetry in general dimensions

We construct Schroedinger-like solutions of the Vasiliev higher spin theory in D>3 dimension. Symmetries of such solutions and the linearised equation of motion for the scalar on such backgrounds are analysed. We further propose Galilean invariant bosonic and fermionic field theories that could be dual to the two parity invariant higher spin theories on the Schroedinger-like background respectively. The discussion is phrased mainly in D=4 dimension, while similar constructions follow straightforwardly in higher dimensions.

$(h_{11/2})^2$ alignments in neutron-rich $^{132}$Ba with negative-parity pairs

The shell-model collective-pair truncation with negative-parity pairs is adopted to study the $(h_{11/2})^2$ alignment in $^{132}$Ba. The proton $(h_{11/2})^2$-alignment state is predicted as an $E\sim4.6$ MeV and $τ\sim 0.5~μ$s isomer with relatively strong E3 decay channels. The oblately deformed neutron $(h_{11/2})^{-2}$ alignment in the yrast band and four negative-parity bands are confirmed, even although two of these negative-parity bands favor the prolate deformation, which directly manifests the $γ$ unstability of $^{132}$Ba.

Connection vs metric description for non-AdS solutions in higher spin theories

We consider recently-constructed solutions of three dimensional SL(N,R) x SL(N,R) Chern-Simons theories with non-relativistic symmetries. Solutions of the Chern-Simons theories can generically be mapped to solutions of a gravitational theory with a higher-spin gauge symmetry. However, we will show that some of the non-relativistic solutions are not equivalent to metric solutions, as this mapping fails to be invertible. We also show that these Chern-Simons solutions always have a global SL(N,R) x SL(N,R) symmetry. We argue that these results pose a challenge to constructing a duality relating these solutions to field theories with non-relativistic symmetries.

Experimental research on the THGEM-based thermal neutron detector

A new thermal neutron detector with the domestically produced THGEM (THick Gas Electron Multiplier) was developed as an alternative to 3He to meet the needs of the next generation of neutron facilities. One type of Au-coated THGEM was designed specifically for the neutron detection. A detector prototype had been developed and the preliminary experimental tests were presented, including the performance of the Au-coated THGEM working in the Ar/CO2 gas mixtures and the neutron imaging test with 252CF source, which would provide the reference of experimental data for the research in future.

A novel acquisition method of nuclear spectrum based on pulse area analysis

A novel method based on pulse area analysis(PAA) was presented for acquisition nuclear spectrum by the digitizer. PAA method can be used as a substitute for the traditional method of pulse height analysis (PHA). In the PAA method a commercial digitizer was employed to sample and sum in the pulse, and the area of pulse is proportional to the energy of the detected radiation. The results of simulation and experiment indicate the great advantages of PAA method, especially when the count rate is high and shaping time constant is small. When shaping time constant is 0.5us, the energy resolution of PAA is about 66% better than that of PHA.

Quantum correlations in bulk properties of solids obtained from neutron scattering

We demonstrate that inelastic neutron scattering technique can be used to indirectly detect and measure the macroscopic quantum correlations quantified by both entanglement and discord in a quantum magnetic material, VODPO4 . 1D2O. The amount of quantum correlations is obtained 2 by analyzing the neutron scattering data of magnetic excitations in isolated V4+ spin dimers. Our quantitative analysis shows that the critical temperature of this material can reach as high as Tc = 82.5 K, where quantum entanglement drops to zero. Significantly, quantum discord can even survive at Tc = 300 K and may be used in room temperature quantum devices. Taking into account the spin-orbit (SO) coupling, we also predict theoretically that entanglement can be significantly enhanced and the critical temperature Tc increases with the strength of spin-orbit coupling.

Scattering amplitudes in Lifshitz spacetime

We consider the calculation of scattering amplitudes in field theories dual to Lifshitz spacetimes. These amplitudes provide an interesting probe of the IR structure of the field theory; our aim is to use them to explore the observable consequences of the singularity in the spacetime. We assume the amplitudes can be related by T-duality to a Wilson loop, as in the AdS case, and determine the bulk minimal surfaces for the simplest cusp Wilson loop. We use this to determine the leading IR singularity in the amplitude. We find there is a stronger IR singularity for z >1 than for z=1, with a coefficient which vanishes as z goes to 1.

Extending the nonsingular hyperscaling violating spacetimes

Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating geometries, which provide a holographic description of non-relativistic field theories, generically have a singularity in the infrared region of the geometry, where tidal forces for freely falling observers diverge, but there is a special class of hyperscaling violating geometries where this tidal force divergence does not occur. We explicitly construct a smooth extension of the spacetime in this case, and explore the structure of the spacetime. We find that the spacetime has two disconnected boundaries, as in AdS$_2$. We also consider the behaviour of finite-energy excitations of the spacetime at the horizon, arguing that they will have some divergence there.

Complex version KdV equation and the periods solution

In this paper, the complex version KdV equation is discussed. The corresponding coupled equations is a integrable system in the sense of the bi-Hamiltonian structure, so the complex version KdV equation is integrable. A new spectral form is given, the periodic solution of the complex version KdV equation is obtained. It is showed that the periodic solution is the classical solution.
