Autonomous Vehicles Drive into Shared Spaces: eHMI Design Concept Focusing on Vulnerable Road Users

In comparison to conventional traffic designs, shared spaces promote a more pleasant urban environment with slower motorized movement, smoother traffic, and less congestion. In the foreseeable future, shared spaces will be populated with a mixture of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and vulnerable road users (VRUs) like pedestrians and cyclists. However, a driver-less AV lacks a way to communicate with the VRUs when they have to reach an agreement of a negotiation, which brings new challenges to the safety and smoothness of the traffic. To find a feasible solution to integrating AVs seamlessly into shared-space traffic, we first identified the possible issues that the shared-space designs have not considered for the role of AVs. Then an online questionnaire was used to ask participants about how they would like a driver of the manually driving vehicle to communicate with VRUs in a shared space. We found that when the driver wanted to give some suggestions to the VRUs in a negotiation, participants thought that the communications via the driver's body behaviors were necessary. Besides, when the driver conveyed information about her/his intentions and cautions to the VRUs, participants selected different communication methods with respect to their transport modes (as a driver, pedestrian, or cyclist). These results suggest that novel eHMIs might be useful for AV-VRU communication when the original drivers are not present. Hence, a potential eHMI design concept was proposed for different VRUs to meet their various expectations. In the end, we further discussed the effects of the eHMIs on improving the sociality in shared spaces and the autonomous driving systems.

Hierarchical Relation-Guided Type-Sentence Alignment for Long-Tail Relation Extraction with Distant Supervision

Distant supervision uses triple facts in knowledge graphs to label a corpus for relation extraction, leading to wrong labeling and long-tail problems. Some works use the hierarchy of relations for knowledge transfer to long-tail relations. However, a coarse-grained relation often implies only an attribute (e.g., domain or topic) of the distant fact, making it hard to discriminate relations based solely on sentence semantics. One solution is resorting to entity types, but open questions remain about how to fully leverage the information of entity types and how to align multi-granular entity types with sentences. In this work, we propose a novel model to enrich distantly-supervised sentences with entity types. It consists of (1) a pairwise type-enriched sentence encoding module injecting both context-free and -related backgrounds to alleviate sentence-level wrong labeling, and (2) a hierarchical type-sentence alignment module enriching a sentence with the triple fact's basic attributes to support long-tail relations. Our model achieves new state-of-the-art results in overall and long-tail performance on benchmarks.

Phase Noise Model for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution Using a Local Local Oscillator

The value of residual phase noise, after phase compensation, is one of the key limitations of performance improvement for continuous-variable quantum key distribution using a local local oscillator (LLO CV-QKD) system, since it is the major excess noise. However, due to the non-ideality of the realistic devices implemented in practice, for example, imperfect lasers, detectors and unbalanced interferometers, the value of residual phase noise in current system is still relatively large. Here, we develop a phase noise model to improve the phase noise tolerance of the LLO CV-QKD schemes. In our model, part of the phase-reference measurement noise associated with detection efficiency and electronic noise of Bob's detector as well as a real-time monitored phasereference intensity at Bob's side is considered trusted because it can be locally calibrated by Bob. We show that using our phase noise model can significantly improve the secure key rate and transmission distance of the LLO CV-QKD system. We further conduct an experiment to substantiate the superiority of the phase noise model. Based on experimental data of a LLO CV-QKD system in the 25 km optical fiber channel, we demonstrate that the secure key rate under our phase noise model is approximately 40% higher than that under the conventional phase noise model.

Class-conditioned Domain Generalization via Wasserstein Distributional Robust Optimization

Given multiple source domains, domain generalization aims at learning a universal model that performs well on any unseen but related target domain. In this work, we focus on the domain generalization scenario where domain shifts occur among class-conditional distributions of different domains. Existing approaches are not sufficiently robust when the variation of conditional distributions given the same class is large. In this work, we extend the concept of distributional robust optimization to solve the class-conditional domain generalization problem. Our approach optimizes the worst-case performance of a classifier over class-conditional distributions within a Wasserstein ball centered around the barycenter of the source conditional distributions. We also propose an iterative algorithm for learning the optimal radius of the Wasserstein balls automatically. Experiments show that the proposed framework has better performance on unseen target domain than approaches without domain generalization.

Global well-posedness for the three-dimensional full compressible viscous non-resistive MHD system

In this paper, we consider the three-dimensional full compressible viscous non-resistive MHD system. Global well-posedness is proved for an initial-boundary value problem around a strong background magnetic field. It is also shown that the unique solution converges to the steady state at an almost exponential rate as time tends to infinity. The proof is based on the celebrated two-tier energy method, due to Guo and Tice [\emph{Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal.}, 207 (2013), pp. 459--531; \emph{Anal. PDE.}, 6 (2013), pp. 287--369], reformulated in Lagrangian coordinates. The obtained result may be viewed as an extension of Tan and Wang [\emph{SIAM J. Math. Anal.}, 50 (2018), pp. 1432--1470] to the context of heat-conductive fluids. This in particular verifies the stabilization effects of vertical magnetic field in the full compressible non-resistive fluids.

Non-intrusive load decomposition based on CNN-LSTM hybrid deep learning model

With the rapid development of science and technology, the problem of energy load monitoring and decomposition of electrical equipment has been receiving widespread attention from academia and industry. For the purpose of improving the performance of non-intrusive load decomposition, a non-intrusive load decomposition method based on a hybrid deep learning model is proposed. In this method, first of all, the data set is normalized and preprocessed. Secondly, a hybrid deep learning model integrating convolutional neural network (CNN) with long short-term memory network (LSTM) is constructed to fully excavate the spatial and temporal characteristics of load data. Finally, different evaluation indicators are used to analyze the mixture. The model is fully evaluated, and contrasted with the traditional single deep learning model. Experimental results on the open dataset UK-DALE show that the proposed algorithm improves the performance of the whole network system. In this paper, the proposed decomposition method is compared with the existing traditional deep learning load decomposition method. At the same time, compared with the obtained methods: spectral decomposition, EMS, LSTM-RNN, and other algorithms, the accuracy of load decomposition is significantly improved, and the test accuracy reaches 98%.

Extracting Stochastic Governing Laws by Nonlocal Kramers-Moyal Formulas

With the rapid development of computational techniques and scientific tools, great progress of data-driven analysis has been made to extract governing laws of dynamical systems from data. Despite the wide occurrences of non-Gaussian fluctuations, the effective data-driven methods to identify stochastic differential equations with non-Gaussian Lévy noise are relatively few so far. In this work, we propose a data-driven approach to extract stochastic governing laws with both (Gaussian) Brownian motion and (non-Gaussian) Lévy motion, from short bursts of simulation data. Specifically, we use the normalizing flows technology to estimate the transition probability density function (solution of nonlocal Fokker-Planck equation) from data, and then substitute it into the recently proposed nonlocal Kramers-Moyal formulas to approximate Lévy jump measure, drift coefficient and diffusion coefficient. We demonstrate that this approach can learn the stochastic differential equation with Lévy motion. We present examples with one- and two-dimensional, decoupled and coupled systems to illustrate our method. This approach will become an effective tool for discovering stochastic governing laws and understanding complex dynamical behaviors.

Lightweight Self-Attentive Sequential Recommendation

Modern deep neural networks (DNNs) have greatly facilitated the development of sequential recommender systems by achieving state-of-the-art recommendation performance on various sequential recommendation tasks. Given a sequence of interacted items, existing DNN-based sequential recommenders commonly embed each item into a unique vector to support subsequent computations of the user interest. However, due to the potentially large number of items, the over-parameterised item embedding matrix of a sequential recommender has become a memory bottleneck for efficient deployment in resource-constrained environments, e.g., smartphones and other edge devices. Furthermore, we observe that the widely-used multi-head self-attention, though being effective in modelling sequential dependencies among items, heavily relies on redundant attention units to fully capture both global and local item-item transition patterns within a sequence. In this paper, we introduce a novel lightweight self-attentive network (LSAN) for sequential recommendation. To aggressively compress the original embedding matrix, LSAN leverages the notion of compositional embeddings, where each item embedding is composed by merging a group of selected base embedding vectors derived from substantially smaller embedding matrices. Meanwhile, to account for the intrinsic dynamics of each item, we further propose a temporal context-aware embedding composition scheme. Besides, we develop an innovative twin-attention network that alleviates the redundancy of the traditional multi-head self-attention while retaining full capacity for capturing long- and short-term (i.e., global and local) item dependencies. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that LSAN significantly advances the accuracy and memory efficiency of existing sequential recommenders.

Optimal Scheduling of Integrated Demand Response-Enabled Community Integrated Energy Systems in Uncertain Environments

The community integrated energy system (CIES) is an essential energy internet carrier that has recently been the focus of much attention. A scheduling model based on chance-constrained programming is proposed for integrated demand response (IDR)-enabled CIES in uncertain environments to minimize the system operating costs, where an IDR program is used to explore the potential interaction ability of electricity-gas-heat flexible loads and electric vehicles. Moreover, power to gas (P2G) and micro-gas turbine (MT), as links of multi-energy carriers, are adopted to strengthen the coupling of different energy subsystems. Sequence operation theory (SOT) and linearization methods are employed to transform the original model into a solvable mixed-integer linear programming model. Simulation results on a practical CIES in North China demonstrate an improvement in the CIES operational economy via the coordination of IDR and renewable uncertainties, with P2G and MT enhancing the system operational flexibility and user comprehensive satisfaction. The CIES operation is able to achieve a trade-off between economy and system reliability by setting a suitable confidence level for the spinning reserve constraints. Besides, the proposed solution method outperforms the Hybrid Intelligent Algorithm in terms of both optimization results and calculation efficiency.

A BCS-GDE Algorithm for Multi-objective Optimization of Combined Cooling, Heating and Power Model

District energy systems can not only reduce energy consumption but also set energy supply dispatching schemes according to demand. In this paper, the combined cooling heating and power economic emission dispatch (CCHPEED) model is established with the objective of economic cost, primary energy consumption, and pollutant emissions, as well as three decision-making strategies, are proposed to meet the demand for energy supply. Besides, a generalized differential evolution with the best compromise solution processing mechanism (BCS-GDE) is proposed to solve the model, also, the best compromise solution processing mechanism is put forward in the algorithm. In the simulation, the resource dispatching is performed according to the different energy demands of hotels, offices, and residential buildings on the whole day. The simulation results show that the model established in this paper can reduce the economic cost, energy consumption, and pollutant emission, in which the maximum reduction rate of economic cost is 72%, the maximum reduction rate of primary energy consumption is 73%, and the maximum reduction rate of pollutant emission is 88%. Concurrently, BCS-GDE also has better convergence and diversity than the classic algorithms.

Extension of the operation mode of back-streaming white neutron beam at the China spallation neutron source

The back-streaming white neutron source (Back-n) is a comprehensive neutron experimental platform for nuclear data measurement, nuclear astrophysics, neutron irradiation, detector calibration, etc. In order to meet a variety of experimental requirements, an attempt of various combinations of collimators has been made for the current collimation system. The basic parameters such as beam flux and beam spot characteristics under different beam operation modes have been studied. According to the change of the CSNS proton beam operation mode, the influence of different proton beam spots on the Back-n beam is also studied. The study finds that some beam modes with new collimator combinations can meet the experimental requirements and greatly shorten the experimental time. In addition, we have found a parameterized formula for the uniform beam spot of the high-power proton beam based on the beam monitor data, which provides a more accurate proton-beam source term for future white neutron beam physics and application researches.

Optimal Scheduling of Isolated Microgrids Using Automated Reinforcement Learning-based Multi-period Forecasting

In order to reduce the negative impact of the uncertainty of load and renewable energies outputs on microgrid operation, an optimal scheduling model is proposed for isolated microgrids by using automated reinforcement learning-based multi-period forecasting of renewable power generations and loads. Firstly, a prioritized experience replay automated reinforcement learning (PER-AutoRL) is designed to simplify the deployment of deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based forecasting model in a customized manner, the single-step multi-period forecasting method based on PER-AutoRL is proposed for the first time to address the error accumulation issue suffered by existing multi-step forecasting methods, then the prediction values obtained by the proposed forecasting method are revised via the error distribution to improve the prediction accuracy; secondly, a scheduling model considering demand response is constructed to minimize the total microgrid operating costs, where the revised forecasting values are used as the dispatch basis, and a spinning reserve chance constraint is set according to the error distribution; finally, by transforming the original scheduling model into a readily solvable mixed integer linear programming via the sequence operation theory (SOT), the transformed model is solved by using CPLEX solver. The simulation results show that compared with the traditional scheduling model without forecasting, this approach manages to significantly reduce the system operating costs by improving the prediction accuracy.

Large-Scale Modeling of Mobile User Click Behaviors Using Deep Learning

Modeling tap or click sequences of users on a mobile device can improve our understandings of interaction behavior and offers opportunities for UI optimization by recommending next element the user might want to click on. We analyzed a large-scale dataset of over 20 million clicks from more than 4,000 mobile users who opted in. We then designed a deep learning model that predicts the next element that the user clicks given the user's click history, the structural information of the UI screen, and the current context such as the time of the day. We thoroughly investigated the deep model by comparing it with a set of baseline methods based on the dataset. The experiments show that our model achieves 48% and 71% accuracy (top-1 and top-3) for predicting next clicks based on a held-out dataset of test users, which significantly outperformed all the baseline methods with a large margin. We discussed a few scenarios for integrating the model in mobile interaction and how users can potentially benefit from the model.

Nucleon structure from basis light-front quantization

We produce the light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the nucleon from a basis light-front ap- proach in the leading Fock sector representation. We solve for the mass eigenstates from a light-front effective Hamiltonian, which includes a confining potential adopted from light-front holography in the transverse direction, a longitudinal confinement, and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling. We then employ the LFWFs to obtain the electromagnetic and axial form factors, the par- ton distribution functions (PDFs) and the generalized parton distribution functions for the nucleon. The electromagnetic and axial form factors of the proton agree with the experimental data, whereas the neutron form factors deviate somewhat from the experiments in the low momentum transfer region. The unpolarized, the helicity, and the transversity valence quark PDFs, after QCD scale evolution, are fairly consistent with the global fits to the data at the relevant experimental scales. The helicity asymmetry for the down quark also agrees well with the measurements, however, the asymmetry for the up quark shows a deviation from the data, especially in the small x region. We also find that the tensor charge agrees well with the extracted data and the lattice QCD predictions, while the axial charge is somewhat outside the experimental error bar. The electromagnetic radii of the proton, the magnetic radius of the neutron, and the axial radius are in excellent agreement with the measurements, while the neutron charge radius deviates from experiment.

Exploration of lane-changing duration for heavy vehicles and passenger cars: a survival analysis approach

Lane-changing (LC) behavior describes the lateral movement of the vehicle from the current-lane to the target-lane while proceeding forward. Among the many research directions, LC duration (LCD) measures the total time it takes for a vehicle to travel from the current lane to the target lane, which is an indispensable indicator to characterize the LC behavior. Although existing research has made some achievements, less attention has been paid to the research of heavy vehicles' LCD. Therefore, this paper aims to further explore the LCD between heavy vehicles and passenger cars. LC trajectories are extracted from the newly-released HighD dataset, which contains of 16.5 hours of measurement and over 11,000 vehicles. The survival function of LCD has been estimated, and the characteristic has been analyzed. Thereafter, the Accelerated Failure Time model is introduced to explore the influencing factors. Results demonstrate that the MST value of passenger cars and heavy vehicles is about 5.51s and 6.08s. The heavy vehicles would maintain a longer time-headway and distance-headway with preceding vehicle when performing LC. Nevertheless, these two factors do not significantly affect the LCD of heavy vehicles. Finally, the results and the modeling implications have been discussed. We hope this paper could contribute to our further understanding of the LC behaviors for heavy vehicles and passenger cars.

Hierarchical automatic lane-changing motion planning: from self-optimum to local-optimum

In order to minimize the impact of lane change (LC) maneuver on surrounding traffic environment, a hierarchical automatic LC algorithm that could realize local optimum has been proposed. This algorithm consists of a tactical layer planner and an operational layer controller. The former generates a local-optimum trajectory. The comfort, efficiency, and safety of the LC vehicle and its surrounding vehicles are simultaneously satisfied in the optimization objective function. The later is designed based on vehicle kinematics model and the Model Predictive Control (MPC), which aims to minimize the tracking error and control increment. Combining macro-level and micro-level analysis, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Our results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm could greatly reduce the impact of LC maneuver on traffic flow. This is reflected in the decrease of total loss for nearby vehicles (such as discomfort and speed reduction), and the increase of traffic speed and throughput within the LC area. In addition, in order to guide the practical application of our algorithm, we employ the HighD dataset to validate the algorithm. This research could also be regarded as a preliminary foundational work to develop locally-optimal automatic LC algorithm. We anticipate that this research could provide valuable insights into autonomous driving technology.

Screen2Words: Automatic Mobile UI Summarization with Multimodal Learning

Mobile User Interface Summarization generates succinct language descriptions of mobile screens for conveying important contents and functionalities of the screen, which can be useful for many language-based application scenarios. We present Screen2Words, a novel screen summarization approach that automatically encapsulates essential information of a UI screen into a coherent language phrase. Summarizing mobile screens requires a holistic understanding of the multi-modal data of mobile UIs, including text, image, structures as well as UI semantics, motivating our multi-modal learning approach. We collected and analyzed a large-scale screen summarization dataset annotated by human workers. Our dataset contains more than 112k language summarization across $\sim$22k unique UI screens. We then experimented with a set of deep models with different configurations. Our evaluation of these models with both automatic accuracy metrics and human rating shows that our approach can generate high-quality summaries for mobile screens. We demonstrate potential use cases of Screen2Words and open-source our dataset and model to lay the foundations for further bridging language and user interfaces.

HelpViz: Automatic Generation of Contextual Visual MobileTutorials from Text-Based Instructions

We present HelpViz, a tool for generating contextual visual mobile tutorials from text-based instructions that are abundant on the web. HelpViz transforms text instructions to graphical tutorials in batch, by extracting a sequence of actions from each text instruction through an instruction parsing model, and executing the extracted actions on a simulation infrastructure that manages an array of Android emulators. The automatic execution of each instruction produces a set of graphical and structural assets, including images, videos, and metadata such as clicked elements for each step. HelpViz then synthesizes a tutorial by combining parsed text instructions with the generated assets, and contextualizes the tutorial to user interaction by tracking the user's progress and highlighting the next step. Our experiments with HelpViz indicate that our pipeline improved tutorial execution robustness and that participants preferred tutorials generated by HelpViz over text-based instructions. HelpViz promises a cost-effective approach for generating contextual visual tutorials for mobile interaction at scale.
