On the ordering of credibility factors

Traditional credibility analysis of risks in insurance is based on the random effects model, where the heterogeneity across the policyholders is assumed to be time-invariant. One popular extension is the dynamic random effects (or state-space) model. However, while the latter allows for time-varying heterogeneity, its application to the credibility analysis should be conducted with care due to the possibility of negative credibilities per period [see Pinquet (2020a)]. Another important but under-explored topic is the ordering of the credibility factors in a monotonous manner -- recent claims ought to have larger weights than the old ones. This paper shows that the ordering of the covariance structure of the random effects in the dynamic random effects model does not necessarily imply that of the credibility factors. Subsequently, we show that the state-space model, with AR(1)-type autocorrelation function, guarantees the ordering of the credibility factors. Simulation experiments and a case study with a real dataset are conducted to show the relevance in insurance applications.

Elongation of Curvature-Bounded Path

The paper is concerned with elongating the shortest curvature-bounded path between two oriented points to an expected length. The elongation of curvature-bounded paths to an expected length is fundamentally important to plan missions for nonholonomic-constrained vehicles in many practical applications, such as coordinating multiple nonholonomic-constrained vehicles to reach a destination simultaneously or performing a mission with a strict time window. In the paper, the explicit conditions for the existence of curvature-bounded paths joining two oriented points with an expected length are established by applying the properties of the reachability set of curvature-bounded paths. These existence conditions are numerically verifiable, allowing readily checking the existence of curvature-bounded paths between two prescribed oriented points with a desired length. In addition, once the existence conditions are met, elongation strategies are provided in the paper to get curvature-bounded paths with expected lengths. Finally, some examples of minimum-time path planning for multiple fixed-wing aerial vehicles to cooperatively achieve a triangle-shaped flight formation are presented, illustrating and verifying the developments of the paper.

AIP: Adversarial Iterative Pruning Based on Knowledge Transfer for Convolutional Neural Networks

With the increase of structure complexity, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) take a fair amount of computation cost. Meanwhile, existing research reveals the salient parameter redundancy in CNNs. The current pruning methods can compress CNNs with little performance drop, but when the pruning ratio increases, the accuracy loss is more serious. Moreover, some iterative pruning methods are difficult to accurately identify and delete unimportant parameters due to the accuracy drop during pruning. We propose a novel adversarial iterative pruning method (AIP) for CNNs based on knowledge transfer. The original network is regarded as the teacher while the compressed network is the student. We apply attention maps and output features to transfer information from the teacher to the student. Then, a shallow fully-connected network is designed as the discriminator to allow the output of two networks to play an adversarial game, thereby it can quickly recover the pruned accuracy among pruning intervals. Finally, an iterative pruning scheme based on the importance of channels is proposed. We conduct extensive experiments on the image classification tasks CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ILSVRC-2012 to verify our pruning method can achieve efficient compression for CNNs even without accuracy loss. On the ILSVRC-2012, when removing 36.78% parameters and 45.55% floating-point operations (FLOPs) of ResNet-18, the Top-1 accuracy drop are only 0.66%. Our method is superior to some state-of-the-art pruning schemes in terms of compressing rate and accuracy. Moreover, we further demonstrate that AIP has good generalization on the object detection task PASCAL VOC.

Distributed economic control of dynamically coupled networks

This paper investigates the synthesis of distributed economic control algorithms under which dynamically coupled physical systems are regulated to a variational equilibrium of a constrained convex game. We study two complementary cases: (i) each subsystem is linear and controllable; and (ii) each subsystem is nonlinear and in the strict-feedback form. The convergence of the proposed algorithms is guaranteed using Lyapunov analysis. Their performance is verified by two case studies on a multi-zone building temperature regulation problem and an optimal power flow problem, respectively.

A Novel Approach to Discover Switch Behaviours in Process Mining

Process mining is a relatively new subject which builds a bridge between process modelling and data mining. An exclusive choice in a process model usually splits the process into different branches. However, in some processes, it is possible to switch from one branch to another. The inductive miner guarantees to return sound process models, but fails to return a precise model when there are switch behaviours between different exclusive choice branches due to the limitation of process trees. In this paper, we present a novel extension to the process tree model to support switch behaviours between different branches of the exclusive choice operator and propose a novel extension to the inductive miner to discover sound process models with switch behaviours. The proposed discovery technique utilizes the theory of a previous study to detect possible switch behaviours. We apply both artificial and publicly-available datasets to evaluate our approach. Our results show that our approach can improve the precision of discovered models by 36% while maintaining high fitness values compared to the original inductive miner.

A Robust and Accurate Approach to Detect Process Drifts from Event Streams

Business processes are bound to evolve as a form of adaption to changes, and such changes are referred as process drifts. Current process drift detection methods perform well on clean event log data, but the performance can be tremendously affected by noises. A good process drift detection method should be accurate, fast, and robust to noises. In this paper, we propose an offline process drift detection method which identifies each newly observed behaviour as a candidate drift point and checks if the new behaviour can signify significant changes to the original process behaviours. In addition, a bidirectional search method is proposed to accurately locate both the adding and removing of behaviours. The proposed method can accurately detect drift points from event logs and is robust to noises. Both artificial and real-life event logs are used to evaluate our method. Results show that our method can consistently report accurate process drift time while maintaining a reasonably fast detection speed.

DANCE: Enhancing saliency maps using decoys

Saliency methods can make deep neural network predictions more interpretable by identifying a set of critical features in an input sample, such as pixels that contribute most strongly to a prediction made by an image classifier. Unfortunately, recent evidence suggests that many saliency methods poorly perform, especially in situations where gradients are saturated, inputs contain adversarial perturbations, or predictions rely upon inter-feature dependence. To address these issues, we propose a framework that improves the robustness of saliency methods by following a two-step procedure. First, we introduce a perturbation mechanism that subtly varies the input sample without changing its intermediate representations. Using this approach, we can gather a corpus of perturbed data samples while ensuring that the perturbed and original input samples follow the same distribution. Second, we compute saliency maps for the perturbed samples and propose a new method to aggregate saliency maps. With this design, we offset the gradient saturation influence upon interpretation. From a theoretical perspective, we show the aggregated saliency map could not only capture inter-feature dependence but, more importantly, robustify interpretation against previously described adversarial perturbation methods. Following our theoretical analysis, we present experimental results suggesting that, both qualitatively and quantitatively, our saliency method outperforms existing methods.

Detecting and Understanding Branching Frequency Changes in Process Models

Business processes are continuously evolving in order to adapt to changes due to various factors. One type of process changes are branching frequency changes, which are related to changes in frequencies between different options when there is an exclusive choice. Existing methods either cannot detect such changes or cannot provide accurate and comprehensive results. In this paper, we propose a method which takes both event logs and process models as input and generates a choice sequence for each exclusive choice in the process model. The method then identifies change points based on the choice sequences. We evaluate our method on a real-life event log. Results show that our method can identify branching frequency changes in process models and provide comprehensive results to users.

Discovering Redundant Activities in Event Logs for the Simplification of Process Models

Process mining acts as a valuable tool to analyse the behaviour of an organisation by offering techniques to discover, monitor and enhance real processes. The key to process mining is to discovery understandable process models. However, real-life logs can be complex with redundant activities, which share similar behaviour but have different syntax. We show that the existence of such redundant activities heavily affects the quality of discovered process models. Existing approaches filter activities by frequency, which cannot solve problems caused by redundant activities. In this paper, we propose first to discover redundant activities in the log level and, then, use the discovery results to simplify event logs. Two publicly available data sets are used to evaluate the usability of our approach in real-life processes. Our approach can be adopted as a preprocessing step before applying any discovery algorithms to produce simplify models.

Self-Distribution Binary Neural Networks

In this work, we study the binary neural networks (BNNs) of which both the weights and activations are binary (i.e., 1-bit representation). Feature representation is critical for deep neural networks, while in BNNs, the features only differ in signs. Prior work introduces scaling factors into binary weights and activations to reduce the quantization error and effectively improves the classification accuracy of BNNs. However, the scaling factors not only increase the computational complexity of networks, but also make no sense to the signs of binary features. To this end, Self-Distribution Binary Neural Network (SD-BNN) is proposed. Firstly, we utilize Activation Self Distribution (ASD) to adaptively adjust the sign distribution of activations, thereby improve the sign differences of the outputs of the convolution. Secondly, we adjust the sign distribution of weights through Weight Self Distribution (WSD) and then fine-tune the sign distribution of the outputs of the convolution. Extensive experiments on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet datasets with various network structures show that the proposed SD-BNN consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) BNNs (e.g., achieves 92.5% on CIFAR-10 and 66.5% on ImageNet with ResNet-18) with less computation cost. Code is available at https://github.com/ pingxue-hfut/SD-BNN.

Lattice Boltzmann simulation of three-phase flows with moving contact lines on curved surfaces

A numerical method for simulating three-phase flows with moving contact lines on arbitrarily complex surfaces is developed in the framework of lattice Boltzmann method. In this method, the immiscible three-phase flow is modeled through a multiple-relaxation-time color-gradient model, which not only allows for a full range of interfacial tensions but also produces stable outcomes for a wide range of viscosity ratios. A characteristic line model is introduced to implement the wetting boundary condition, which is not only easy to implement but also able to handle arbitrarily complex boundaries with prescribed contact angles. The developed method is first validated by the simulation of a Janus droplet resting on a flat surface, a perfect Janus droplet deposited on a cylinder, and the capillary intrusion of ternary fluids for various viscosity ratios. It is then used to study a compound droplet subject to a uniform incoming flow passing through a multi-pillar structure, where three different values of surface wettability are considered. The simulated results show that the surface wettability has significant impact on the droplet dynamic behavior and final fluid distribution.

ACP: Automatic Channel Pruning via Clustering and Swarm Intelligence Optimization for CNN

As the convolutional neural network (CNN) gets deeper and wider in recent years, the requirements for the amount of data and hardware resources have gradually increased. Meanwhile, CNN also reveals salient redundancy in several tasks. The existing magnitude-based pruning methods are efficient, but the performance of the compressed network is unpredictable. While the accuracy loss after pruning based on the structure sensitivity is relatively slight, the process is time-consuming and the algorithm complexity is notable. In this article, we propose a novel automatic channel pruning method (ACP). Specifically, we firstly perform layer-wise channel clustering via the similarity of the feature maps to perform preliminary pruning on the network. Then a population initialization method is introduced to transform the pruned structure into a candidate population. Finally, we conduct searching and optimizing iteratively based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) to find the optimal compressed structure. The compact network is then retrained to mitigate the accuracy loss from pruning. Our method is evaluated against several state-of-the-art CNNs on three different classification datasets CIFAR-10/100 and ILSVRC-2012. On the ILSVRC-2012, when removing 64.36% parameters and 63.34% floating-point operations (FLOPs) of ResNet-50, the Top-1 and Top-5 accuracy drop are less than 0.9%. Moreover, we demonstrate that without harming overall performance it is possible to compress SSD by more than 50% on the target detection dataset PASCAL VOC. It further verifies that the proposed method can also be applied to other CNNs and application scenarios.

X-ray Intraday Variability of the TeV Blazar PKS 2155-304 with Suzaku During 2005-2014

We have examined 13 pointed observations of the TeV emitting high synchrotron peak blazar PKS 2155-304, taken by the Suzaku satellite throughout its operational period. We found that the blazar showed large-amplitude intraday variabilities in the soft (0.8 - 1.5 keV) and the hard (1.5 - 8.0 keV) bands in the light curves. Spectral variability on intraday timescales is estimated using the hardness ratio. The blazar usually becomes harder when brighter and vice versa, following the typical behavior of high synchrotron peak blazars. The power spectral density (PSD) analyses of 11 out of 13 light curves in the total energy (0.8 - 8.0 keV) are found to be red-noise dominated, with power-law spectral indices that span a large range, from -2.81 to -0.88. Discrete correlation function analyses of all the 13 light curves between the soft and the hard bands show that they are well correlated and peak at, or very close to, zero lag. This indicates that the emissions in soft and hard bands are probably cospatial and emitted from the same population of leptons. Considering fluxes versus variability timescales, we found no correlation on intraday timescales, implying that X-ray emission from PKS 2155-304 is not dominated by simple changes in the Doppler factor. We briefly discuss the most likely emission mechanisms responsible for the observed flux and spectral variabilities and place constraints on magnetic field strength and Lorentz factors of the electrons emitting the X-rays in the most likely scenario.

SIR Model with Stochastic Transmission

The Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model is the cornerstone of epidemiological models. However, this specification depends on two parameters only, which implies a lack of flexibility and the difficulty to replicate the volatile reproduction numbers observed in practice. We extend the classic SIR model by introducing nonlinear stochastic transmission, to get a stochastic SIR model. We derive its exact solution and discuss the condition for herd immunity. The stochastic SIR model corresponds to a population of infinite size. When the population size is finite, there is also sampling uncertainty. We propose a state-space framework under which we analyze the relative magnitudes of the observational and stochastic epidemiological uncertainties during the evolution of the epidemic. We also emphasize the lack of robustness of the notion of herd immunity when the SIR model is time discretized.

Placement in Integrated Circuits using Cyclic Reinforcement Learning and Simulated Annealing

Physical design and production of Integrated Circuits (IC) is becoming increasingly more challenging as the sophistication in IC technology is steadily increasing. Placement has been one of the most critical steps in IC physical design. Through decades of research, partition-based, analytical-based and annealing-based placers have been enriching the placement solution toolbox. However, open challenges including long run time and lack of ability to generalize continue to restrict wider applications of existing placement tools. We devise a learning-based placement tool based on cyclic application of Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Simulated Annealing (SA) by leveraging the advancement of RL. Results show that the RL module is able to provide a better initialization for SA and thus leads to a better final placement design. Compared to other recent learning-based placers, our method is majorly different with its combination of RL and SA. It leverages the RL model's ability to quickly get a good rough solution after training and the heuristic's ability to realize greedy improvements in the solution.

Learning Energy-Based Models as Generative ConvNets via Multi-grid Modeling and Sampling

This paper proposes a multi-grid method for learning energy-based generative ConvNet models of images. For each grid, we learn an energy-based probabilistic model where the energy function is defined by a bottom-up convolutional neural network (ConvNet or CNN). Learning such a model requires generating synthesized examples from the model. Within each iteration of our learning algorithm, for each observed training image, we generate synthesized images at multiple grids by initializing the finite-step MCMC sampling from a minimal 1 x 1 version of the training image. The synthesized image at each subsequent grid is obtained by a finite-step MCMC initialized from the synthesized image generated at the previous coarser grid. After obtaining the synthesized examples, the parameters of the models at multiple grids are updated separately and simultaneously based on the differences between synthesized and observed examples. We show that this multi-grid method can learn realistic energy-based generative ConvNet models, and it outperforms the original contrastive divergence (CD) and persistent CD.

UCP: Uniform Channel Pruning for Deep Convolutional Neural Networks Compression and Acceleration

To apply deep CNNs to mobile terminals and portable devices, many scholars have recently worked on the compressing and accelerating deep convolutional neural networks. Based on this, we propose a novel uniform channel pruning (UCP) method to prune deep CNN, and the modified squeeze-and-excitation blocks (MSEB) is used to measure the importance of the channels in the convolutional layers. The unimportant channels, including convolutional kernels related to them, are pruned directly, which greatly reduces the storage cost and the number of calculations. There are two types of residual blocks in ResNet. For ResNet with bottlenecks, we use the pruning method with traditional CNN to trim the 3x3 convolutional layer in the middle of the blocks. For ResNet with basic residual blocks, we propose an approach to consistently prune all residual blocks in the same stage to ensure that the compact network structure is dimensionally correct. Considering that the network loses considerable information after pruning and that the larger the pruning amplitude is, the more information that will be lost, we do not choose fine-tuning but retrain from scratch to restore the accuracy of the network after pruning. Finally, we verified our method on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100 and ILSVRC-2012 for image classification. The results indicate that the performance of the compact network after retraining from scratch, when the pruning rate is small, is better than the original network. Even when the pruning amplitude is large, the accuracy can be maintained or decreased slightly. On the CIFAR-100, when reducing the parameters and FLOPs up to 82% and 62% respectively, the accuracy of VGG-19 even improved by 0.54% after retraining.

Science with the TianQin Observatory: Preliminary results on Galactic double white dwarf binaries

We explore the prospects of detecting of Galactic double white dwarf (DWD) binaries with the space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory TianQin. In this work, we analyze both a sample of currently known DWDs and a realistic synthetic population of DWDs to assess the number of guaranteed detections and the full capacity of the mission. We find that TianQin can detect 12 out of $\sim100$ known DWDs; GW signals of these binaries can be modeled in detail ahead of the mission launch, and therefore they can be used as verification sources. Besides we estimate that TianQin has potential to detect as many as $10^4$ DWDs in the Milky Way. TianQin is expected to measure their orbital periods and amplitudes with accuracies of $\sim10^{-7}$ and $\sim0.2$, respectively, and to localize on the sky a large fraction (39%) of the detected population to better than 1 deg$^2$. We conclude that TianQin has the potential to significantly advance our knowledge on Galactic DWDs by increasing the sample up to 2 orders of magnitude, and will allow their multi-messenger studies in combination with electromagnetic telescopes. We also test the possibilities of different configurations of TianQin: (1) the same mission with a different orientation, (2) two perpendicular constellations combined into a network, and (3) the combination of the network with the ESA-led Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. We find that the network of detectors boosts the accuracy on the measurement of source parameters by 1-2 orders of magnitude, with the improvement on sky localization being the most significant.
