Precision test of the muon-Higgs coupling at a high-energy muon collider

We explore the sensitivity of directly testing the muon-Higgs coupling at a high-energy muon collider. This is strongly motivated if there exists new physics that is not aligned with the Standard Model Yukawa interactions which are responsible for the fermion mass generation. We illustrate a few such examples for physics beyond the Standard Model. With the accidentally small value of the muon Yukawa coupling and its subtle role in the high-energy production of multiple (vector and Higgs) bosons, we show that it is possible to measure the muon-Higgs coupling to an accuracy of ten percent for a 10 TeV muon collider and a few percent for a 30 TeV machine by utilizing the three boson production, potentially sensitive to a new physics scale about $Λ\sim$ 30-100 TeV.

Report of the Topical Group on Electroweak Precision Physics and Constraining New Physics for Snowmass 2021

The precise measurement of physics observables and the test of their consistency within the standard model (SM) are an invaluable approach, complemented by direct searches for new particles, to determine the existence of physics beyond the standard model (BSM). Studies of massive electroweak gauge bosons (W and Z bosons) are a promising target for indirect BSM searches, since the interactions of photons and gluons are strongly constrained by the unbroken gauge symmetries. They can be divided into two categories: (a) Fermion scattering processes mediated by s- or t-channel W/Z bosons, also known as electroweak precision measurements; and (b) multi-boson processes, which include production of two or more vector bosons in fermion-antifermion annihilation, as well as vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The latter categories can test modifications of gauge-boson self-interactions, and the sensitivity is typically improved with increased collision energy. This report evaluates the achievable precision of a range of future experiments, which depend on the statistics of the collected data sample, the experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties, and their correlations. In addition it presents a combined interpretation of these results, together with similar studies in the Higgs and top sector, in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework. This framework provides a model-independent prescription to put generic constraints on new physics and to study and combine large sets of experimental observables, assuming that the new physics scales are significantly higher than the EW scale.

Can the three new states around 2.2 GeV assign to $ω(3D)$

Recently, the BESIII Collaboration reported three resonances: $X(2232)$ with $M = 2232 \pm 19 \pm 27$ MeV and $Γ= 93 \pm 53 \pm 20$ MeV, $X(2200)$ whose mass $M = 2200 \pm 11 \pm 17$ MeV and width $Γ= 74 \pm 20 \pm 24$ MeV as well as $X(2222)$ which has mass of $2222 \pm 7 \pm 2$ MeV and the width of $59 \pm 30 \pm 6$ MeV. The mass spectrum of $ω$ meson family is studied utilizing the modified Godfrey-Isgur model, and the two-body strong decays of $X(2232)$, $X(2200)$ and $X(2222)$ within two different approaches of the $^3P_0$ model. We find that the newly discovered states $X(2232)$, $X(2200)$ and $X(2222)$ may be the same and are most likely to be the $ω(3D)$ state. The discovery could be useful in establishing entire $ω$ mesons.

Higgs boson decay to charmonia via $c$-quark fragmentation

We calculate the decay branching fractions of the Higgs boson to $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ via the charm-quark fragmentation mechanism for the color-singlet and color-octet states in the framework of non-relativistic QCD. The decay rates are governed by the charm-quark Yukawa coupling, unlike the decay $H\to J/ψ+ γ$, which is dominated by the $γ^*$-$J/ψ$ mixing. We find that the decay branching fractions can be about $2 \times 10^{-5}$ for $H\to c{\bar c}+J/ψ$, and $6 \times 10^{-5}$ for $H\to c{\bar c}+η_c$. We comment on the perspective of searching for the Higgs boson to $J/ψ$ transition at the High-Luminosity LHC for testing the charm-quark Yukawa coupling.

The physics case of a 3 TeV muon collider stage

In the path towards a muon collider with center of mass energy of 10 TeV or more, a stage at 3 TeV emerges as an appealing option. Reviewing the physics potential of such muon collider is the main purpose of this document. In order to outline the progression of the physics performances across the stages, a few sensitivity projections for higher energy are also presented. There are many opportunities for probing new physics at a 3 TeV muon collider. Some of them are in common with the extensively documented physics case of the CLIC 3 TeV energy stage, and include measuring the Higgs trilinear coupling and testing the possible composite nature of the Higgs boson and of the top quark at the 20 TeV scale. Other opportunities are unique of a 3 TeV muon collider, and stem from the fact that muons are collided rather than electrons. This is exemplified by studying the potential to explore the microscopic origin of the current $g$-2 and $B$-physics anomalies, which are both related with muons.

Vector Boson Scattering Processes: Status and Prospects

Insight into the electroweak (EW) and Higgs sectors can be achieved through measurements of vector boson scattering (VBS) processes. The scattering of EW bosons are rare processes that are precisely predicted in the Standard Model (SM) and are closely related to the Higgs mechanism. Modifications to VBS processes are also predicted in models of physics beyond the SM (BSM), for example through changes to the Higgs boson couplings to gauge bosons and the resonant production of new particles. In this review, experimental results and theoretical developments of VBS at the Large Hadron Collider, its high luminosity upgrade, and future colliders are presented.

Electroweak fragmentation at high energies: A Snowmass White Paper

In particle collisions at energies higher than the mass scale involved, the collinear splitting becomes the dominant phenomena. Suitable descriptions of the physics in this regime include the parton distribution functions, the initial state radiations, the final state radiations and the fragmentation functions. It is of fundamental importance to formulate those functions with consistent theoretical treatments, and to provide the adequate formalism for applications, as motivated by the recent discussions of partonic scatterings at the multi-TeV energy regime. In this report, we briefly present the resummation of the final-state logarithms as fragmentation functions for the electroweak processes. As an explicit example, we study an electroweak gauge boson splitting in the process $pp\to WZj$ and demonstrate the important effects from the fragmentation.

Quark and Gluon Contents of a Lepton at High Energies

In high-energy leptonic collisions, such as at a multi-TeV muon collider, the collinear splittings of the electroweak (EW) gauge bosons and leptons are the dominant phenomena, and the scattering processes should thus be formulated in terms of the EW parton distribution functions (EW PDFs). We complete this formalism in the Standard Model to include the QCD sector and evaluate the quark and gluon PDFs inside a lepton at the double-log accuracy. The splittings of the photon and subsequently the quarks and gluons control the quark/gluon PDFs below the EW scale. The massive gauge bosons lead to substantial contributions at high scales. The jet production cross section can reach the order of a few nb (50 pb) in $e^+e^-$ ($μ^+μ^-$) collisions, at the TeV c.m. energies with a moderate acceptance cut, that governs the overall event shape up to about $p_T^j \sim 60$ GeV.

Multiple Sclerosis Lesion Analysis in Brain Magnetic Resonance Images: Techniques and Clinical Applications

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and degenerative disease of the central nervous system, characterized by the appearance of focal lesions in the white and gray matter that topographically correlate with an individual patient's neurological symptoms and signs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides detailed in-vivo structural information, permitting the quantification and categorization of MS lesions that critically inform disease management. Traditionally, MS lesions have been manually annotated on 2D MRI slices, a process that is inefficient and prone to inter-/intra-observer errors. Recently, automated statistical imaging analysis techniques have been proposed to detect and segment MS lesions based on MRI voxel intensity. However, their effectiveness is limited by the heterogeneity of both MRI data acquisition techniques and the appearance of MS lesions. By learning complex lesion representations directly from images, deep learning techniques have achieved remarkable breakthroughs in the MS lesion segmentation task. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art automatic statistical and deep-learning MS segmentation methods and discuss current and future clinical applications. Further, we review technical strategies, such as domain adaptation, to enhance MS lesion segmentation in real-world clinical settings.

PTR-PPO: Proximal Policy Optimization with Prioritized Trajectory Replay

On-policy deep reinforcement learning algorithms have low data utilization and require significant experience for policy improvement. This paper proposes a proximal policy optimization algorithm with prioritized trajectory replay (PTR-PPO) that combines on-policy and off-policy methods to improve sampling efficiency by prioritizing the replay of trajectories generated by old policies. We first design three trajectory priorities based on the characteristics of trajectories: the first two being max and mean trajectory priorities based on one-step empirical generalized advantage estimation (GAE) values and the last being reward trajectory priorities based on normalized undiscounted cumulative reward. Then, we incorporate the prioritized trajectory replay into the PPO algorithm, propose a truncated importance weight method to overcome the high variance caused by large importance weights under multistep experience, and design a policy improvement loss function for PPO under off-policy conditions. We evaluate the performance of PTR-PPO in a set of Atari discrete control tasks, achieving state-of-the-art performance. In addition, by analyzing the heatmap of priority changes at various locations in the priority memory during training, we find that memory size and rollout length can have a significant impact on the distribution of trajectory priorities and, hence, on the performance of the algorithm.

Evidence for anisotropic spin-triplet Andreev reflection at the 2D van der Waals ferromagnet/superconductor interface

Fundamental symmetry breaking and relativistic spin-orbit coupling give rise to fascinating phenomena in quantum materials. Of particular interest are the interfaces between ferromagnets and common s-wave superconductors, where the emergent spin-orbit fields support elusive spin-triplet superconductivity, crucial for superconducting spintronics and topologically-protected Majorana bound states. Here, we report the observation of large magnetoresistances at the interface between a quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe0.29TaS2 and a conventional s-wave superconductor NbN, which provides the possible experimental evidence for the spin triplet Andreev reflection and induced spin-triplet superconductivity at ferromagnet/superconductor interface arising from Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The temperature, voltage, and interfacial barrier dependences of the magnetoresistance further support the induced spin-triplet superconductivity and spin-triplet Andreev reflection. This discovery, together with the impressive advances in two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnets, opens an important opportunity to design and probe superconducting interfaces with exotic properties.

Gate-tunability of the superconducting state at the $EuO/KTaO_3 (111)$ interface

The recent discovery of superconducting interfaces in the $KTaO_3 (111)$-based heterostructures is intriguing, since a much higher superconducting critical temperature (TC ~ 2 K) is achieved compared to that in the $SrTiO_3$ heterostructures (~ 300 mK). In this paper, we report the superconducting properties of $EuO/KTaO_3 (111)$ interface as a function of the interface carrier density ($n_s$). The maximum T_C is observed to be ~ 2 K at $n_s$ ~ $1\times10^{14}$ cm-2. In addition, we show that the critical current density and the upper critical magnetic field can be effectively tuned by the back gate voltage. Interestingly, the gate dependence of the upper critical magnetic field exhibits a trend opposite to that of TC in the underdoped region, suggesting a relatively larger Cooper pairing potential.

Giant oscillatory Gilbert damping in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor junctions

Interfaces between materials with differently ordered phases present unique opportunities for exotic physical properties, especially the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructures. The investigation of zero- and pi-junctions has been of particular interest for both fundamental physical science and emerging technologies. Here, we report the experimental observation of giant oscillatory Gilbert damping in the superconducting Nb/NiFe/Nb junctions with respect to the NiFe thickness. This observation suggests an unconventional spin pumping and relaxation via zero-energy Andreev bound states that exist only in the Nb/NiFe/Nb pi-junctions, but not in the Nb/NiFe/Nb zero-junctions. Our findings could be important for further exploring the exotic physical properties of ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructures, and potential applications of ferromagnet pi-junctions in quantum computing, such as half-quantum flux qubits.

Stacked polarimeters with twisted black phosphorus

The real-time, in-line analysis of light polarization is critical in optical communication networks, which suffers from the complex systems with numerous bulky opto-electro-mechanical elements tandemly arranged along optical path. Here, we propose a fiber-integrated polarimeter with nano-thickness by vertically stacking three two-dimensional (2D) materials based photodetection units. We demonstrate a self-power-calibrated, ultrafast, unambiguous detection of linear (LP) and circular polarized (CP) light according to the symmetry broken induced linear photogalvanic effects (LPGE) and circular photogalvanic effects (CPGE) in black phosphorous (BP) units, which are twistedly stacked to substitute traditional mechanical rotation of polarizers. As a demonstration, we achieve Hadamard single-pixel polarimetric imaging by the polarimeter to recognize the polarization distributions, showing potential in high-speed polarization-division-multiplexed imaging and real-time polarized endoscopy. This work provides a new strategy for next-generation ultracompact optical and optoelectronic systems, and guides a way for developing high-resolution arrayed devices with multifunctional pixels.

Half-integer Shapiro Steps in Strong Ferromagnetic Josephson Junctions

We report the experimental observation of half-integer Shapiro steps in the strong ferromagnetic Josephson junction (Nb-NiFe-Nb) by investigating the current-phase relation under radiofrequency microwave excitation. The half-integer Shapiro steps are robust in a wide temperature range from T = 4 to 7 K. The half-integer Shapiro steps could be attributed to co-existence of 0- and pi-states in the strong ferromagnetic NiFe Josephson junctions with the spatial variation of the2 NiFe thickness. This scenario is also supported by the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterization of the Nb/NiFe/Nb junction.

Hovering UAV-Based FSO Communications: Channel Modelling, Performance Analysis, and Parameter Optimization

Relay-assisted free-space optical (FSO) communication systems are exploited as a means to mitigate the limiting effects of the turbulence induced atmospheric scintillation. However, conventional ground relays are stationary, and their optimal placement is not always feasible. Due to their mobility and flexibility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide new opportunities for FSO relaying systems. In this paper, a hovering UAV-based serial FSO decode-and-forward relaying system is investigated. In the channel modelling for such a system, four types of impairments (i.e., atmospheric loss, atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, and link interruption due to angle-of-arrival fluctuation) are considered. Based on the proposed channel model, a tractable expression for the probability density function of the total channel gain is obtained. Closed-form expressions of the link outage probability and end-to-end outage probability are derived. Asymptotic outage performance bounds for each link and the overall system are also presented to reveal insights into the impacts of different impairments. To improve system performance, we optimize the beam width, field-of-view and UAVs' locations. Numerical results show that the derived theoretical expressions are accurate to evaluate the outage performance of the system. Moreover, the proposed optimization schemes are efficient and can improve performance significantly.
