Radiative Decay of Dark Exciton Related Emission in a Sandwiched Monolayer WSe2 Revealed by Room Temperature Micro and Nano Photoluminescence

TMDCs have attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to their unique indirect to direct band gap transition from bulk to monolayer thickness. Strong confinement in the out-of-plane direction enhances the Coulomb potential between the charged particles (e-h pairs) and thus increases the exciton binding energy dramatically. The lattice inversion asymmetry in a monolayer creates two non-equivalent (but degenerate in energy) band edges protected by time reversal polarisation via pseudo-spin. However, the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling in the valence band and weak spin-splitting in the conduction band results in the lowest lying exciton in WX2 (X = S, Se) being spin forbidden and optically dark. Because of their long life times, dark excitons (XD) are highly attractive for quantum optics and optoelectronic applications. To date studying XD emission is limited to cryogenic temperature or required very complex experimental configurations to observe them at room temperature (RT). Here, we demonstrate a novel approach of radiative decay of XD related emissions in 1L-WSe2 studied by micro and nano PL at RT. 1L-WSe2 flakes were sandwiched by noble metal (Au or Ag) substrates and PDMS nano-patches providing a strong local out-of-plane dipole moment with respect to the 2D plane. This strong dipole moment not only enhances the XD in WSe2, it also produces bound excitons due to extrinsic charge defects visible at RT. The spatial distributions of these XD related emissions were studied by TEPL with a spatial resolution < 10 nm confirming the confinement of these excitons within the PDMS nano-patches. Finally, by removing the nano-patches from the top of the flakes we are able to recover the bright excitons in the 1L-WSe2. Our approach paves the way for deep understanding and to harness excitonic properties in low dimensional semiconductors, thus offering a platform towards quantum optics.

Phase II of the LAMOST-Kepler/K2 survey. I. Time series of medium-resolution spectroscopic observations

Phase \RNum{2} of the LAMOST-{\sl Kepler/K}2 survey (LK-MRS), initiated in 2018, aims at collecting medium-resolution spectra ($R\sim7,500$; hereafter MRS) for more than $50,000$ stars with multiple visits ($\sim60$ epochs) over a period of 5 years (2018 September to 2023 June). We selected 20 footprints distributed across the {\sl Kepler} field and six {\sl K}2 campaigns, with each plate containing a number of stars ranging from $\sim2,000$ to $\sim 3,000$. During the first year of observations, the LK-MRS has already collected $\sim280,000$ and $\sim369,000$ high-quality spectra in the blue and red wavelength range, respectively. The atmospheric parameters and radial velocities for $\sim259,000$ spectra of $21,053$ targets were successfully calculated by the LASP pipeline. The internal uncertainties for the effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and radial velocity are found to be $100$\,K, $0.15$\,dex, $0.09$\,dex, and $1.00$\,km\,s$^{-1}$, respectively. We found $14,997$, $20,091$, and $1,514$ stars in common with the targets from the LAMOST low-resolution survey (LRS), GAIA and APOGEE, respectively, corresponding to a fraction of $\sim70\%$, $\sim95\%$ and $\sim7.2\%$. In general, the parameters derived from LK-MRS spectra are consistent with those obtained from the LRS and APOGEE spectra, but the scatter increases as the surface gravity decreases when comparing with the measurements from APOGEE. A large discrepancy is found with the GAIA values of the effective temperature. The comparisons of radial velocities of LK-MRS to GAIA and LK-MRS to APOGEE nearly follow an Gaussian distribution with a mean $μ\sim1.10$ and $0.73$\,km\,s$^{-1}$, respectively.

Learning-based Computer-aided Prescription Model for Parkinson's Disease: A Data-driven Perspective

In this paper, we study a novel problem: "automatic prescription recommendation for PD patients." To realize this goal, we first build a dataset by collecting 1) symptoms of PD patients, and 2) their prescription drug provided by neurologists. Then, we build a novel computer-aided prescription model by learning the relation between observed symptoms and prescription drug. Finally, for the new coming patients, we could recommend (predict) suitable prescription drug on their observed symptoms by our prescription model. From the methodology part, our proposed model, namely Prescription viA Learning lAtent Symptoms (PALAS), could recommend prescription using the multi-modality representation of the data. In PALAS, a latent symptom space is learned to better model the relationship between symptoms and prescription drug, as there is a large semantic gap between them. Moreover, we present an efficient alternating optimization method for PALAS. We evaluated our method using the data collected from 136 PD patients at Nanjing Brain Hospital, which can be regarded as a large dataset in PD research community. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and clinical potential of our method in this recommendation task, if compared with other competing methods.

An Analytical Probabilistic Expression for Modeling Sum of Spatial-dependent Wind Power Output

Applying probability-related knowledge to accurately explore and exploit the inherent uncertainty of wind power output is one of the key issues that need to be solved urgently in the development of smart grid. This letter develops an analytical probabilistic expression for modeling sum of spatial-dependent wind farm power output through introducing unit impulse function, copulas, and Gaussian mixture model. A comparative Monte Carlo sampling study is given to illustrate the validity of the proposed model.

On a class of infinite simple Lie conformal algebras

In this paper, we study a class of infinite simple Lie conformal algebras associated to a class of generalized Block type Lie algebras. The central extensions, conformal derivations and free intermediate series modules of this class of Lie conformal algebras are determined. Moreover, we also show that these Lie conformal algebras do not have any non-trivial finite conformal modules. Consequently, these Lie conformal algebras cannot be embedded into $gc_N$ for any positive integer $N$.

Radial velocity measurements from LAMOST medium-resolution spectroscopic observations: A pointing towards the Kepler field

Radial velocity is one of key measurements in understanding the fundamental properties of stars, stellar clusters and the Galaxy. A plate of stars in the Kepler field were observed in May of 2018 with the medium-resolution spectrographs of LAMOST, aiming to test the performance of this new system which is the upgraded equipment of LAMOST after the first five-year regular survey. We present our analysis on the radial velocity measurements (RVs) derived from these data. The results show that slight and significant systematic errors exist among the RVs obtained from the spectra collected by different spectrographs and exposures, respectively. After correcting the systematic errors with different techniques, the precision of RVs reaches ~1.3, ~1.0, ~0.5 and ~0.3 km/s at S/Nr = 10, 20, 50, and 100, respectively. Comparing with the RVs of the standard stars of the APOGEE survey, our RVs are calibrated with a zero-point shift of ~7 km/s. The results indicate that the LAMOST medium-resolution spectroscopic system may provide RVs in a reasonable accuracy and precision for the selected targets.

LAMOST observations in the Kepler field. II. Database of the low-resolution spectra from the five-year regular survey

The LAMOST-Kepler (LK-) project was initiated to use the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) to make spectroscopic follow-up observations for the targets in the field of the Kepler mission. The Kepler field is divided into 14 subfields that are adapted to the LAMOST circular field with a diameter of 5 degrees. During the regular survey phase of LAMOST, the LK-project took data from 2012 June to 2017 June and covered all the 14 subfields at least twice. In particular, we describe in this paper the second Data Release of the LK-project, including all spectra acquired through 2015 May to 2017 June together with the first round observations of the LK-project from 2012 June to 2014 September. The LK-project now counts 227 870 spectra of 156 390 stars, among which we have derived atmospheric parameters (log g, T eff and [Fe/H]) and heliocentric radial velocity (RV) for 173 971 spectra of 126 172 stars. These parameters were obtained with the most recent version of the LAMOST Stellar Parameter Pipeline v 2.9.7. Nearly one half, namely 76 283 targets, are observed both by LAMOST and Kepler telescopes. These spectra, establishing a large spectroscopy library, will be useful for the entire astronomical community, particularly for planetary science and stellar variability on Kepler targets.

Varieties of elementary subalgebras of submaximal rank in type A

Let G be a connected simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p > 0, and g := Lie(G). We additionally assume that G is standard and is of type An. Motivated by the investigation of the geometric properties of the varieties E(r, g) of r-dimensional elementary subalgebras of a restricted Lie algebra g, we will show in this article the irreducible components of E(rkp(g)-1,g) when rkp(g) is the maximal dimension of an elementary subalgebra of g.

Saturation rank for finite group schemes: Finite groups and Infinitesimal group schemes

We investigate the saturation rank of a finite group scheme, defined over an algebraically closed field $\Bk$ of positive characteristic $p$. We begin by exploring the saturation rank for finite groups and infinitesimal group schemes. Special attention is given to reductive Lie algebras and the second Frobenius kernel of the algebraic group $\SL_{n}$.

Steric Effect in Threshold Photoionization Dissociations of Serine Conformers

Steric effect in the threshold dissociative ionizations of serine conformers [CH2OH-C\alphaH(NH2)-C\betaOOH] is revealed by high-level ab initio calculations combined with our newly developed infrared laser desorption / tunable VUV photoionization mass spectrometry. We find that near the ionization thresholds the Cα-Cβand Cα-C bonds are selectively broken for the respective cationic conformers, yielding the different fragments. Novel dynamic processes, proton transfer and reorientation between the predissociative fragments, are involved in the threshold photoionization dissociations.
