Self-Learning Monte Carlo Method

Monte Carlo simulation is an unbiased numerical tool for studying classical and quantum many-body systems. One of its bottlenecks is the lack of general and efficient update algorithm for large size systems close to phase transition or with strong frustrations, for which local updates perform badly. In this work, we propose a new general-purpose Monte Carlo method, dubbed self-learning Monte Carlo (SLMC), in which an efficient update algorithm is first learned from the training data generated in trial simulations and then used to speed up the actual simulation. We demonstrate the efficiency of SLMC in a spin model at the phase transition point, achieving a 10-20 times speedup.

Self-Learning Determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo Method

Self-learning Monte Carlo method [arXiv:1610.03137, 1611.09364] is a powerful general-purpose numerical method recently introduced to simulate many-body systems. In this work, we implement this method in the framework of determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulation of interacting fermion systems. Guided by a self-learned bosonic effective action, our method uses a cumulative update [arXiv:1611.09364] algorithm to sample auxiliary field configurations quickly and efficiently. We demonstrate that self-learning determinantal Monte Carlo method can reduce the auto-correlation time to as short as one near a critical point, leading to $\mathcal{O}(N)$-fold speedup. This enables to simulate interacting fermion system on a $100\times 100$ lattice for the first time, and obtain critical exponents with high accuracy.

Self-Learning Monte Carlo Method in Fermion Systems

We develop the self-learning Monte Carlo (SLMC) method, a general-purpose numerical method recently introduced to simulate many-body systems, for studying interacting fermion systems. Our method uses a highly-efficient update algorithm, which we design and dub "cumulative update", to generate new candidate configurations in the Markov chain based on a self-learned bosonic effective model. From general analysis and numerical study of the double exchange model as an example, we find the SLMC with cumulative update drastically reduces the computational cost of the simulation, while remaining statistically exact. Remarkably, its computational complexity is far less than the conventional algorithm with local updates.

Semialgebraic Geometry of Nonnegative Tensor Rank

We study the semialgebraic structure of $D_r$, the set of nonnegative tensors of nonnegative rank not more than $r$, and use the results to infer various properties of nonnegative tensor rank. We determine all nonnegative typical ranks for cubical nonnegative tensors and show that the direct sum conjecture is true for nonnegative tensor rank. We show that nonnegative, real, and complex ranks are all equal for a general nonnegative tensor of nonnegative rank strictly less than the complex generic rank. In addition, such nonnegative tensors always have unique nonnegative rank-$r$ decompositions if the real tensor space is $r$-identifiable. We determine conditions under which a best nonnegative rank-$r$ approximation has a unique nonnegative rank-$r$ decomposition: for $r \le 3$, this is always the case; for general $r$, this is the case when the best nonnegative rank-$r$ approximation does not lie on the boundary of $D_r$. Many of our general identifiability results also apply to real tensors and real symmetric tensors.

Superconductivity from a confinement transition out of a fractionalized Fermi liquid with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological and Ising-nematic orders

The Schwinger-boson theory of the frustrated square lattice antiferromagnet yields a stable, gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid ground state with time-reversal symmetry, incommensurate spin correlations and long-range Ising-nematic order. We obtain an equivalent description of this state using fermionic spinons (the fermionic spinons can be considered to be bound states of the bosonic spinons and the visons). Upon doping, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid can lead to a fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*) with small Fermi pockets of electron-like quasiparticles, while preserving the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological and Ising-nematic orders. We describe a Higgs transition out of this deconfined metallic state into a confining superconducting state which is usually of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov type, with spatial modulation of the superconducting order.

Uniqueness of Nonnegative Tensor Approximations

We show that for a nonnegative tensor, a best nonnegative rank-r approximation is almost always unique, its best rank-one approximation may always be chosen to be a best nonnegative rank-one approximation, and that the set of nonnegative tensors with non-unique best rank-one approximations form an algebraic hypersurface. We show that the last part holds true more generally for real tensors and thereby determine a polynomial equation so that a real or nonnegative tensor which does not satisfy this equation is guaranteed to have a unique best rank-one approximation. We also establish an analogue for real or nonnegative symmetric tensors. In addition, we prove a singular vector variant of the Perron--Frobenius Theorem for positive tensors and apply it to show that a best nonnegative rank-r approximation of a positive tensor can never be obtained by deflation. As an aside, we verify that the Euclidean distance (ED) discriminants of the Segre variety and the Veronese variety are hypersurfaces and give defining equations of these ED discriminants.

Anomalous Crystal Symmetry Fractionalization on the Surface of Topological Crystalline Insulators

The surface of a three-dimensional topological electron system often hosts symmetry-protected gapless surface states. With the effect of electron interactions, these surface states can be gapped out without symmetry breaking by a surface topological order, in which the anyon excitations carry anomalous symmetry fractionalization that cannot be realized in a genuine two-dimensional system. We show that for a mirror-symmetry-protected topological crystalline insulator with mirror Chern number $n=4$, its surface can be gapped out by an anomalous $\mathbb Z_2$ topological order, where all anyons carry mirror-symmetry fractionalization $M^2=-1$. The identification of such anomalous crystalline symmetry fractionalization implies that in a two-dimensional $\mathbb Z_2$ spin liquid the vison excitation cannot carry $M^2=-1$ if the spinon carries $M^2=-1$ or a half-integer spin.

Classification and detection of symmetry fractionalization in chiral spin liquids

In this work we study the crystal symmetry fractionalization in chiral spin liquids with the chiral-semion topological order. We show that if such a chiral spin liquid is realized in a two-dimensional lattice model with odd number of spin-$\frac12$ per unit cell and the state preserves spin rotation symmetry and translation symmetries, the semion excitation must carry both half-integer spin and fractional crystal quantum numbers. As a result, only a unique symmetry enriched topological phase can be realized in chiral spin liquids in a spin-$\frac12$ kagome lattice model. These fractional symmetry quantum numbers are confirmed numerically using ground state wave functions obtained with the density matrix renormalization group method.

Double-semion topological order from exactly solvable quantum dimer models

We construct a generalized quantum dimer model on two-dimensional nonbipartite lattices including the triangular lattice, the star lattice and the kagome lattice. At the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point, we obtain its exact ground states that are shown to be a fully gapped quantum spin liquid with the double-semion topological order. The ground-state wave function of such a model at the RK point is a superposition of dimer configurations with a nonlocal sign structure determined by counting the number of loops in the transition graph. We explicitly demonstrate the double-semion topological order in the ground states by showing the semionic statistics of monomer excitations. We also discuss possible implications of such double-semion resonating valence bond states to candidate quantum spin-liquid systems discovered experimentally and numerically in the past few years.

Symmetry fractionalization of visons in $\mathbb Z_2$ spin liquids

In this work we study symmetry fractionalization of vison excitations in topological $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids. We show that in the presence of the full $\mathrm{SO}(3)$ spin rotational symmetry and if there is an odd number of spin-$\frac12$ per unit cell, the symmetry fractionalization of visons is completely fixed. On the other hand, visons can have different classes of symmetry fractionalization if the spin rotational symmetry is reduced. As a concrete example, we show that visons in the Balents-Fisher-Girvin $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid have crystal symmetry fractionalization classes which are not allowed in $\mathrm{SO}(3)$ symmetric spin liquids, due to the reduced spin rotational symmetry.

Variational wave function for an anisotropic single-hole-doped $t$-$J$ ladder

Based on three general guiding principles, i.e., no double occupancy constraint, accurate description of antiferromagnetism at half-filling, and the precise sign structure of the $t$-$J$ model, a new ground state wave function has been constructed recently [Weng, New J. Phys. 13, 103039 (2011)]. In this paper, we specifically study such kind of variational ground state for the one-hole-doped anisotropic two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder using variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method. The results are then systematically compared with those recently obtained by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation. An excellent agreement is found between the VMC and DMRG results, including a "quantum critical point" at the anisotropy parameter $α=α_c\approx0.7$ (with the parameters $t/J=3$), and the emergence of charge modulation and momentum (Fermi point) reconstruction at $α>α_c$ due to the quantum interference of the sign structure. In particular, the wave function indicates that a Landau's quasiparticle description remains valid at $α<α_c$ but fails at $α>α_c$ due to the breakdown of the one-to-one correspondence of momentum and translational symmetry of the hole. The explicit form of the wave function provides a direct understanding on how the many-body strong correlation effect takes place non-perturbatively in a doped Mott insulator, which sheds interesting light on the two-dimensional case where the same type of wave function was proposed to describe the cuprate superconductor.

Charge modulation as fingerprints of phase-string triggered interference

Charge order appears to be an ubiquitous phenomenon in doped Mott insulators, which is currently under intense experimental and theoretical investigations particularly in the high $T_c$ cuprates. This phenomenon is conventionally understood in terms of Hartree-Fock type mean field theory. Here we demonstrate a mechanism for charge modulation which is rooted in the many-particle quantum physics arising in the strong coupling limit. Specifically, we consider the problem of a single hole in a bipartite $t-J$ ladder. As a remnant of the fermion signs, the hopping hole picks up subtle phases pending the fluctuating spins, the so-called phase string effect. We demonstrate the presence of charge modulations in the density matrix renormalization group solutions which disappear when the phase strings are switched off. This form of charge modulation can be understood analytically in a path-integral language, showing that the phase strings give rise to constructive interferences leading to self-localization. When the latter occurs, left- and right-moving propagating modes emerge inside the localization volume and their interference is responsible for the real space charge modulation.

Classification and Monte Carlo study of symmetric $Z_{2}$ spin liquids on the triangular lattice

We study different ways of symmetry fractionalization in $Z_{2}$ spin liquids on the triangular lattice. Our classification can be used to identify the symmetry fractionalization in the $Z_{2}$ spin liquid reported in recent density-matrix-renormalization-group simulations for $J_{1}-J_{2}$ spin model on the triangular lattice. We find 64 types of symmetry enriched $Z_{2}$ spin liquid states on triangular lattice. Besides 8 states constructed in Schwinger-boson parton wavefunctions, 12 more states can be realized in Abrikosov-fermion parton construction. Within a larger gauge group than SU(2), the rest 44 states are also found in a spin-3/2 system. Among 20 types of Abrikosov-fermion Gutzwillerprojected wavefunctions, No.B5 state is a promising candidate for the $Z_{2}$ spin liquid for $J_{1}-J_{2}$ spin model on the triangular lattice. No.B5 lies close to Dirac spin liquid (DSL). However, variational Monte Carlo simulation find that DSL has a good variational energy and $J_{1}-J_{2}$ spin model cannot open a gap for spinons on top of DSL to stabilize No.B5 state.

Detecting crystal symmetry fractionalization from the ground state: Application to $\mathbb Z_2$ spin liquids on the kagome lattice

In quantum spin liquid states, the fractionalized spinon excitations can carry fractional crystal symmetry quantum numbers, and this symmetry fractionalization distinguishes different topologically ordered spin liquid states. In this work we propose a simple way to detect signatures of such crystal symmetry fractionalizations from the crystal symmetry representations of the ground state wave function. We demonstrate our method on projected $\mathbb Z_2$ spin liquid wave functions on the kagome lattice, and show that it can be used to classify generic wave functions. Particularly our method can be used to distinguish several proposed candidates of $\mathbb Z_2$ spin liquid states on the kagome lattice.

Continuous phase transition from Néel state to Z_2 spin liquid state on a square lattice

Recent numerical studies of the $J_1$-$J_2$ model on a square lattice suggest a possible continuous phase transition between the Néel state and a gapped spin-liquid state with Z$_2$ topological order. We show that such a phase transition can be realized through two steps: First bring the Néel state to the U(1) deconfined quantum critical point, which has been studied in the context of Néel -- valence bond solid (VBS) state phase transition. Then condense the spinon pair -- skyrmion/antiskyrmion bound state, which carries both gauge charge and flux of the U(1) gauge field emerging at the deconfined quantum critical point. We also propose a Schwinger boson projective wave function to realize such a Z$_2$ spin liquid state and find that it has a relatively low variational energy ($-0.4893J_1$/site) for the $J_1$-$J_2$ model at $J_2=0.5J_1$. The spin liquid state we obtain breaks the fourfold rotational symmetry of the square lattice and therefore is a nematic spin liquid state. This direct continuous phase transition from the Néel state to a spin liquid state may be realized in the $J_1$-$J_2$ model, or the anisotropic $J_{1x}$-$J_{1y}$-$J_2$ model.

Loops, sign structures and emergent Fermi statistics in three-dimensional quantum dimer models

We introduce and study three-dimensional quantum dimer models with positive resonance terms. We demonstrate that their ground state wave functions exhibit a nonlocal sign structure that can be exactly formulated in terms of loops, and as a direct consequence, monomer excitations obey Fermi statistics. The sign structure and Fermi statistics in these "signful" quantum dimer models can be naturally described by a parton construction, which becomes exact at the solvable point.

Progress on the Construction of the 100 MeV / 100 kW Electron Linac for the NSC KIPT Neutron Source

IHEP, China is constructing a 100 MeV / 100 kW electron Linac for NSC KIPT, Ukraine. This linac will be used as the driver of a neutron source based on a subcritical assembly. In 2012, the injector part of the accelerator was pre-installed as a testing facility in the experimental hall #2 of IHEP. The injector beam and key hardware testing results were met the design goal. Recently, the injector testing facility was disassembled and all of the components for the whole accelerator have been shipped to Ukraine from China by ocean shipping. The installation of the whole machine in KIPT will be started in June, 2013. The construction progress, the design and testing results of the injector beam and key hardware are presented.
