Projected shell model study on nuclei near the N = Z line

Study of the N ~ Z nuclei in the mass-80 region is not only interesting due to the existence of abundant nuclear structure phenomena, but also important in understanding the nucleosynthesis in the rp-process. It is not feasible to apply a conventional shell model due to the necessary involvement of the g_{9/2} sub-shell. In this paper, the projected shell model is introduced to this study. Calculations are systematically performed for the collective levels as well as the quasi-particle excitations. It is demonstrated that calculations with this truncation scheme can achieve a comparable quality as the large-scale shell model diagonalizations for 48Cr, but the present method can be applied for much heavier mass regions. While the known experimental data of the yrast bands in the N ~ Z nuclei (from Se to Ru) are reasonably described, the present calculations predict the existence of K-isomeric states, some of which lie low in energy under certain structure conditions.

SO(5) as a Critical Dynamical Symmetry in the SU(4) Model of High-Temperature Superconductivity

An SU(4) model of high-temperature superconductivity and antiferromagnetism has recently been proposed. The SO(5) group employed by Zhang is embedded in this SU(4) as a subgroup, suggesting a connection between our SU(4) model and the Zhang SO(5) model. In order to understand the relationship between the the two models, we have used generalized coherent states to analyze the nature of the SO(5) subgroup. By constructing coherent-state energy surfaces, we demonstrate explicitly that the SU(4) supset SO(5) symmetry can be interpreted as a critical dynamical symmetry interpolating between superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases, and that this critical dynamical symmetry has many similarities to critical dynamical symmetries identified previously in other fields of physics. More generally, we demonstrate with this example that the mathematical techniques associated with generalized coherent states may have powerful applications in condensed matter physics because they provide a clear connection between microscopic many-body theories and their broken-symmetry approximate solutions. In addition, these methods may be interpreted as defining the most general Bogoliubov transformation subject to a Lie group symmetry constraint, thus providing a mathematical connection between algebraic formulations and the language of quasiparticle theory. Finally, we suggest that the identification of the SO(5) symmetry as a critical dynamical symmetry implies deep algebraic connections between high-temperature superconductors and seemingly unrelated phenomena in other field of physics.

Experimental Realization of Brüschweiler's exponentially fast search algorithm in a homo-nuclear system

Compared with classical search algorithms, Grover quantum algorithm [ Phys. Rev. Lett., 79, 325(1997)] achieves quadratic speedup and Bruschweiler hybrid quantum algorithm [Phys. Rev. Lett., 85, 4815(2000)] achieves an exponential speedup. In this paper, we report the experimental realization of the Bruschweiler$ algorithm in a 3-qubit NMR ensemble system. The pulse sequences are used for the algorithms and the measurement method used here is improved on that used by Bruschweiler, namely, instead of quantitatively measuring the spin projection of the ancilla bit, we utilize the shape of the ancilla bit spectrum. By simply judging the downwardness or upwardness of the corresponding peaks in an ancilla bit spectrum, the bit value of the marked state can be read out, especially, the geometric nature of this read-out can make the results more robust against errors.

Nuclear magnetic dipole properties and the triaxial deformation

Nuclear magnetic dipole properties of ground bands and gamma-vibrational bands are studied for the first time using the triaxial projected shell model approach. The study is carried out for the Dy and Er isotopic chains, ranging from transitional to well-deformed region. It is found that the g-factor ratio of the 2^+ state in ground bands to that of gamma-bands, r=g(2^+, gamma-vib)/g(2^+, ground), varies along an isotopic chain. With the gamma-deformations, which best reproduce the energy levels for both bands, we obtain a qualitative agreement with the experimental data. This result thus suggests that study of the ratio may provide an important information on the triaxial deformation of a nuclear system. The angular-momentum dependence of the ground band g-factor on the triaxial deformation is also investigated.

Microscopic Description of Band Structure at Very Extended Shapes in the A ~ 110 Mass Region

Recent experiments have confirmed the existence of rotational bands in the A \~ 110 mass region with very extended shapes lying between super- and hyper-deformation. Using the projected shell model, we make a first attempt to describe quantitatively such a band structure in 108Cd. Excellent agreement is achieved in the dynamic moment of inertia J(2) calculation. This allows us to suggest the spin values for the energy levels, which are experimentally unknown. It is found that at this large deformation, the sharply down-sloping orbitals in the proton i_{13/2} subshell are responsible for the irregularity in the experimental J(2), and the wave functions of the observed states have a dominant component of two-quasiparticles from these orbitals. Measurement of transition quadrupole moments and g-factors will test these findings, and thus can provide a deeper understanding of the band structure at very extended shapes.

Analysis of Density Matrix reconstruction in NMR Quantum Computing

Reconstruction of density matrices is important in NMR quantum computing. An analysis is made for a 2-qubit system by using the error matrix method. It is found that the state tomography method determines well the parameters that are necessary for reconstructing the density matrix in NMR quantum computations. Analysis is also made for a simplified state tomography procedure that uses fewer read-outs. The result of this analysis with the error matrix method demonstrates that a satisfactory accuracy in density matrix reconstruction can be achieved even in a measurement with the number of read-outs being largely reduced.

SU(3) Symmetry and Scissors Mode Vibrations in Nuclei

We show that a nearly perfect SU(3) symmetry emerges from an extended Projected Shell Model. Starting from a deformed potential we construct separate bases for neutron and proton collective rotational states by exact angular momentum projection. These rotational states are then coupled by diagonalizing a residual pairing plus quadrupole interaction. The states obtained exhibit a one-to-one correspondence with an SU(3) spectrum up to high angular momentum and excitation, and their wave functions have a near-maximal overlap with the SU(3) states. They can also be classified as rotational bands built on spin-1$\hbar$ phonon excitations, which may correspond to a geometrical scissors mode and its generalizations. This work is a direct demonstration that numerical angular momentum projection theory extends the Elliott's original idea to heavy nuclear systems.

Anomalous rotational-alignment in N=Z nuclei and residual neutron-proton interaction

Recent experiments have demonstrated that the rotational-alignment for the $N=Z$ nuclei in the mass-80 region is considerably delayed as compared to the neighboring $N \ne Z$ nuclei. We investigate whether this observation can be understood by a known component of nuclear residual interactions. It is shown that the quadrupole-pairing interaction, which explains many of the delays known in rare-earth nuclei, does not produce the substantial delay observed for these $N=Z$ nuclei. However, the residual neutron-proton interaction which is conjectured to be relevant for $N=Z$ nuclei is shown to be quite important in explaining the new experimental data.

General Phase Matching Condition for Quantum Searching

We present a general phase matching condition for the quantum search algorithm with arbitrary unitary transformation and arbitrary phase rotations. We show by an explicit expression that the phase matching condition depends both on the unitary transformation U and the initial state. Assuming that the initial amplitude distribution is an arbitrary superposition sinθ_0 |1> + cosθ_0 e^{iδ} |2> with |1> = {1 / sinβ} \sum_k |τ_k> <τ_k|U|0> and |2> = {1 / cosβ} \sum_{i \ne τ}|i> , where |τ_k> is a marked state and \sinβ= \sqrt{\sum_k|U_{τ_k 0}|^2} is determined by the matrix elements of unitary transformation U between |τ_k> and the |0> state, then the general phase matching condition is tan{θ/ 2} [cos 2β+ tanθ_0 cosδsin 2β]= tan{ϕ/ 2} [1-tanθ_0 sinδsin 2βtan{θ/ 2}], where θand ϕare the phase rotation angles for |0> and |τ_k>, respectively. This generalizes previous conclusions in which the dependence of phase matching condition on $U$ and the initial state has been disguised. We show that several phase conditions previously discussed in the literature are special cases of this general one, which clarifies the question of which condition should be regarded as exact.

N=Z Waiting Point Nucleus $^{68}$Se: Collective Rotation and High-K Isomeric States

The structure of collective states and quasi-particle excitations in $^{68}$Se is analyzed by using the projected shell model. It is found that the $g_{9/2}$ orbitals play a decisive role for the structure of this nucleus. At the prolate minimum, alignment of the low-K states causes the observed first backbending in moment of inertia and we predict a second backbending that has not yet been reported. At the oblate minimum, quasi-particles having high-K can form long-lived isomeric states. The structure of $^{68}$Se is discussed with respect to the isomers and their possible impact on the determination of its nuclear mass.

Efficient Scheme for Initializing a Quantum Register with an Arbitrary Superposed State

Preparation of a quantum register is an important step in quantum computation and quantum information processing. It is straightforward to build a simple quantum state such as $|i_1 i_2 ... i_n\ket$ with $i_j$ being either 0 or 1, but is a non-trivial task to construct an {\it arbitrary} superposed quantum state. In this Paper, we present a scheme that can most generally initialize a quantum register with an arbitrary superposition of basis states. Implementation of this scheme requires $O(Nn^2)$ standard 1- and 2-bit gate operations, {\it without introducing additional quantum bits}. Application of the scheme in some special cases is discussed.

Transition quadrupole moments in gamma-soft nuclei and the triaxial projected shell model

Transition probabilities of the ground-state bands in $γ$-soft nuclei are studied for the first time using the triaxial projected shell model approach. It is observed that the angular-momentum dependence of the transition quadrupole moment $Q_t$ is related to the triaxial deformation of the nuclear mean-field potential. The introduction of the $γ$-degree of freedom in the shell model basis is shown to have a little influence on the {\it constant} behavior of the low-spin $Q_t$ in a well-deformed nucleus. However, the {\it increasing} collectivity with spin for the low-spin states in a $γ$-soft nucleus can only be explained by considering the triaxial mean-field deformation.

g-Factors and the Interplay of Collective and Single-Particle Degrees of Freedom in Superdeformed Mass-190 Nuclei

Interplay of collective and single-particle degrees of freedom is a common phenomenon in strongly correlated many-body systems. Despite many successful efforts in the study of superdeformed nuclei, there is still unexplored physics that can be best understood only through the nuclear magnetic properties. We point out that study of the gyromagnetic factor (g-factor) may open a unique opportunity for understanding superdeformed structure. Our calculations suggest that investigation of the g-factor dependence on spin and particle number can provide important information on single-particle structure and its interplay with collective motion in the superdeformed mass-190 nuclei. Modern experimental techniques combined with the new generation of sensitive detectors should be capable of testing our predictions.

Effects of Imperfect Gate Operations in Shor's Prime Factorization Algorithm

The effects of imperfect gate operations in implementation of Shor's prime factorization algorithm are investigated. The gate imperfections may be classified into three categories: the systematic error, the random error, and the one with combined errors. It is found that Shor's algorithm is robust against the systematic errors but is vulnerable to the random errors. Error threshold is given to the algorithm for a given number $N$ to be factorized.

Superdeformed Band in ^{36}Ar Described by Projected Shell Model

The projected shell model implements shell model configuration mixing in the projected deformed basis. Our analysis on the recently observed superdeformed band in $^{36}$Ar suggests that the neutron and proton 2-quasiparticle and the 4-quasiparticle bands cross the superdeformed ground band at the same angular momentum. This constitutes a picture of band disturbance in which the first and the second band-crossing, commonly seen at separate rotation frequencies in heavy nuclei, occur simultaneously. We also attempt to understand the assumptions of two previous theoretical calculations which interpreted this band. Electromagnetic properties of the band are predicted.

An SU(4) Model of High-Temperature Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism

We present an SU(4) model of high-temperature superconductivity having many similarities to dynamical symmetries known to play an important role in microscopic nuclear structure physics and in elementary particle physics. Analytical solutions in three dynamical symmetry limits of this model are found: an SO(4) limit associated with antiferromagnetic order; an SU(2) X SO(3) limit that may be interpreted as a d-wave pairing condensate; and an SO(5) limit that may be interpreted as a doorway state between the antiferromagnetic order and the superconducting order. The model suggests a phase diagram in qualitative agreement with that observed in the cuprate superconductors. The relationship between the present model and the SO(5) unification of superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order proposed by Zhang is discussed.

Single-Particle and Collective Motion for Proton-Rich Nuclei on the Astrophysical rp-Process Path

Based on available experimental data, a new set of Nilsson parameters is proposed for proton-rich nuclei with proton or neutron numbers $28\leq N\leq 40$. The resulting single-particle spectra are compared with those from relativistic and non-relativistic mean field theories. Collective excitations in some even--even proton-rich nuclei in the upper $pf$ shell are investigated using the Projected Shell Model with the new Nilsson basis. It is found that the regular bands are sharply disturbed by band crossings involving $1g_{9/2}$ neutrons and protons. Physical quantities for exploring the nature of the band disturbance and the role of the $1g_{9/2}$ single-particle are predicted, which may be tested by new experiments with radioactive beams.

Band Crossing and Signature Splitting in Odd Mass fp Shell Nuclei

Structure of two sets of mirror nuclei: 47V - 47Cr and 49Cr - 49Mn, as well as 49V and 51Mn, is studied using the projected shell model. Their yrast spectra are described as an interplay between the angular momentum projected states around the Fermi level which carry different intrinsic K-quantum numbers. The deviations from a regular rotational sequence are attributed to band crossing and signature splitting, which are usually discussed in heavy nuclear systems. Our results agree reasonably with experimental data, and are comparable with those from the full $pf$ shell model calculations.
