Unconventional Thermal Magnon Hall Effect in a Ferromagnetic Topological Insulator

We present theoretically the thermal Hall effect of magnons in a ferromagnetic lattice with a Kekulé-O coupling (KOC) modulation and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Through a strain-based mechanism for inducing the KOC modulation, we identify four topological phases in terms of the KOC parameter and DMI strength. We calculate the thermal magnon Hall conductivity ${κ^{xy}}$ at low temperature in each of these phases. We predict an unconventional conductivity due to a non-zero Berry curvature emerging from band proximity effects in the topologically trivial phase. We find sign changes of ${κ^{xy}}$ as a function of the model parameters, associated with the local Berry curvature and occupation probability of the bulk bands. Throughout, ${κ^{xy}}$ can be easily tuned with external parameters such as the magnetic field and temperature.

Self-Guiding Multimodal LSTM - when we do not have a perfect training dataset for image captioning

In this paper, a self-guiding multimodal LSTM (sg-LSTM) image captioning model is proposed to handle uncontrolled imbalanced real-world image-sentence dataset. We collect FlickrNYC dataset from Flickr as our testbed with 306,165 images and the original text descriptions uploaded by the users are utilized as the ground truth for training. Descriptions in FlickrNYC dataset vary dramatically ranging from short term-descriptions to long paragraph-descriptions and can describe any visual aspects, or even refer to objects that are not depicted. To deal with the imbalanced and noisy situation and to fully explore the dataset itself, we propose a novel guiding textual feature extracted utilizing a multimodal LSTM (m-LSTM) model. Training of m-LSTM is based on the portion of data in which the image content and the corresponding descriptions are strongly bonded. Afterwards, during the training of sg-LSTM on the rest training data, this guiding information serves as additional input to the network along with the image representations and the ground-truth descriptions. By integrating these input components into a multimodal block, we aim to form a training scheme with the textual information tightly coupled with the image content. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed sg-LSTM model outperforms the traditional state-of-the-art multimodal RNN captioning framework in successfully describing the key components of the input images.

Edge states in a ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with armchair boundaries

We investigate the properties of magnon edge states in a ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with armchair boundaries. In contrast with fermionic graphene, we find novel edge states due to the missing bonds along the boundary sites. After introducing an external on-site potential at the outermost sites we find that the energy spectra of the edge states are tunable. Additionally, when a non-trivial gap is induced, we find that some of the edge states are topologically protected and also tunable. Our results may explain the origin of the novel edge states recently observed in photonic lattices. We also discuss the behavior of these edge states for further experimental confirmations

Electronic correlations in the Hubbard model on a bi-partite lattice

In this work we study the Hubbard model on a bi-partite lattice using the coupled-cluster method (CCM). We first investigate what, within this approach, allows us to reproduce the zero order parameter in the 1D model, as predicted by the exact solution. We show that we need a critical correlation in some of the coupled-cluster model coefficients to reproduce this result, as can be obtained by applying some very accurate results using the CCM for the Heisenberg model. Using the same approach we then tackle the 2D Hubbard model on a square and a honeycomb lattice, both of which can be thought to represent 2D materials. We also analyse the charge and spin excitations, with reasonable results.

A microscopic approach to the dimerization in the frustrated spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chains

The spontaneous dimerization of the frustrated spin-$1\over2$ antiferromagnetic chains is studied by a microscopic approach based on a proper set of composite operators (i.e., pseudo-spin operators). Two approximation schemes are developed. Firstly, a spin-wave approximation is made by a Dyson-Maléev-like boson transformation. The ground-state properties and the triplet excitation spectra are obtained as functions of the coupling parameter. Secondly, based on the pseudo-spin operators, a microscopic treatment is formulated within the framework of the powerful, systematic coupled-cluster method (CCM). Comparison between various approximations is made. The advantage of the CCM for the purposes of systematic improvement is emphasized.
