Grain boundary triple junction dynamics: a continuum disconnection model

The microstructure of polycrystalline materials consists of networks of grain boundaries (GBs) and triple junctions (TJs), along which three GBs meet. The evolution of such microstructures may be driven by surface tension (capillarity), applied stresses, or other means that lead to a jump in chemical potential across the GBs. Here, we develop a model for the concurrent evolution of the GB/TJ network based upon the microscopic mechanism of motion; the motion of line defects (disconnections) in the GB that have both dislocation and step character. The evolution involves thermally-activated disconnection formation/annihilation and migration of multiple disconnections modes/types. We propose this crystallography-respecting continuum model for the disconnection mechanism of GB/TJ dynamics derived with a variational approach based on the principle of maximum energy dissipation. The resultant TJ dynamics is reduced to an optimization problem with constraints that account for local microstructure geometry, conservation of Burgers vectors, and thermal-kinetic limitations on disconnection fluxes. We present analysis of and numerical simulations based upon our model to demonstrate the dependence of the GB and TJ mobilities and the TJ drag effect on the disconnection properties, and compare the predictions with molecular dynamics and experimental observations.

An Overview of Attacks and Defences on Intelligent Connected Vehicles

Cyber security is one of the most significant challenges in connected vehicular systems and connected vehicles are prone to different cybersecurity attacks that endanger passengers' safety. Cyber security in intelligent connected vehicles is composed of in-vehicle security and security of inter-vehicle communications. Security of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and the Control Area Network (CAN) bus are the most significant parts of in-vehicle security. Besides, with the development of 4G LTE and 5G remote communication technologies for vehicle-toeverything (V2X) communications, the security of inter-vehicle communications is another potential problem. After giving a short introduction to the architecture of next-generation vehicles including driverless and intelligent vehicles, this review paper identifies a few major security attacks on the intelligent connected vehicles. Based on these attacks, we provide a comprehensive survey of available defences against these attacks and classify them into four categories, i.e. cryptography, network security, software vulnerability detection, and malware detection. We also explore the future directions for preventing attacks on intelligent vehicle systems.

Mathematical validation of the Peierls--Nabarro model for edge dislocations

In this paper, we perform mathematical validation of the Peierls--Nabarro (PN) models, which are multiscale models of dislocations that incorporate the detailed dislocation core structure. We focus on the static and dynamic PN models of an edge dislocation. In a PN model, the total energy includes the elastic energy in the two half-space continua and a nonlinear potential energy across the slip plane, which is always infinite. We rigorously establish the relationship between the PN model in the full space and the reduced problem on the slip plane in terms of both governing equations and energy variations. The shear displacement jump is determined only by the reduced problem on the slip plane while the displacement fields in the two half spaces are determined by linear elasticity. We establish the existence and sharp regularities of classical solutions in Hilbert space. For both the reduced problem and the full PN model, we prove that a static solution is a global minimizer in perturbed sense. We also show that there is a unique classical, global in time solution of the dynamic PN model.

Smart wing rotation and ingenious leading edge vortex control modulate the unconventional forces during insects flights

Compared with fixed-wing flight, flapping flight can generate a higher lift and is also more maneuverable, largely resulting from the benefits of wing rotation. By analyzing the real wing kinematics of fruit flies, we found that the wing rotation is smart modulated and can be simplified into the advanced $Φ>0$, symmetrical $Φ=0$, and delayed $Φ<0$ modes, where $Φ$ is the phase between stroke reversal and wing rotation. Thus, an experiment of a Robotic fly at Reynolds number of 240 was designed to address how insects control the flow patterns to modulate the flight forces by the smart wing rotation. Experimental results demonstrated that the flow pattern during a half of stroke is featured by the formation of a spiral LEV, which has a convex shape and connects to the trailing vortex via a tip vortex and a root vortex to form a vortex loop. Through wing rotation, the formation of LEV is enhanced and the pinch-off of LEV can be significantly delayed, resulting in the stabilization of LEV and the generation of unconventional forces. In addition, by modulating the modes of wing rotation, insects obtain distinct wing-vortex patterns including positive, neutral, and negative camber patterns, by which insects control the magnitude and direction of unconventional forces owing to the wake capture mechanism. Therefore, the smart wing rotation not only contributes to the generation of unconventional forces, but also accounts for the control of flow pattern during insects steering maneuvers.

A Continuum Multi-Disconnection-Mode Model for Grain Boundary Migration

We study the Grain Boundary (GB) migration based on the underlying disconnection structure and mechanism. Disconnections are line defects that lie solely within a GB and are characterized by both a Burgers vector and a step height, as set by the GB bicrystallography. Multiple disconnection modes can nucleate, as determined by their formation energy barriers and temperature, and move along the GB under different kinds of competing driving forces including shear stress and chemical potential jumps across the GBs. We present a continuum model in two dimensions for GB migration where the GB migrates via the thermally-activated nucleation and kinetically-driven motion of disconnections. We perform continuum numerical simulations for investigating the GB migration behavior in single and multi-mode disconnection limits in both a bicrystal (under two types of boundary conditions) and for a finite-length GB with pinned ends. The results clearly demonstrate the significance of including the coupling and competing between different disconnection modes and driving forces for describing the complex and diverse phenomena of GB migration within polycyrstalline microstructures.

Chinese User Service Intention Classification Based on Hybrid Neural Network

In order to satisfy the consumers' increasing personalized service demand, the Intelligent service has arisen. User service intention recognition is an important challenge for intelligent service system to provide precise service. It is difficult for the intelligent system to understand the semantics of user demand which leads to poor recognition effect, because of the noise in user requirement descriptions. Therefore, a hybrid neural network classification model based on BiLSTM and CNN is proposed to recognize users service intentions. The model can fuse the temporal semantics and spatial semantics of the user descriptions. The experimental results show that our model achieves a better effect compared with other models, reaching 0.94 on the F1 score.

Dislocation dynamics formulation for self-climb of dislocation loops by vacancy pipe diffusion

It has been shown in experiments that self-climb of prismatic dislocation loops by pipe diffusion plays important roles in their dynamical behaviors, e.g., coarsening of prismatic loops upon annealing, as well as the physical and mechanical properties of materials with irradiation. In this paper, we show that this dislocation dynamics self-climb formulation that we derived in Ref. [1] is able to quantitatively describe the properties of self-climb of prismatic loops that were observed in experiments and atomistic simulations. This dislocation dynamics formulation applies to self-climb by pipe diffusion for any configurations of dislocations. For small circular prismatic loops, our formulation recovers the available models in the literature based on linearly mobility relation driven by the interaction force between the loops and an external stress gradient. We also present DDD implementation method of this self-climb formulation. Simulations performed show evolution, translation and coalescence of prismatic loops as well as prismatic loops driven by an edge dislocation by self-climb motion and the elastic interaction between them. These results are in excellent agreement with available experimental and atomistic results. We have also performed systematic analyses of the behaviors of a prismatic loop under the elastic interaction with an infinite, straight edge dislocation by motions of self-climb and glide.

A Feature-Oriented Corpus for Understanding, Evaluating and Improving Fuzz Testing

Fuzzing is a promising technique for detecting security vulnerabilities. Newly developed fuzzers are typically evaluated in terms of the number of bugs found on vulnerable programs/binaries. However, existing corpora usually do not capture the features that prevent fuzzers from finding bugs, leading to ambiguous conclusions on the pros and cons of the fuzzers evaluated. A typical example is that Driller detects more bugs than AFL, but its evaluation cannot establish if the advancement of Driller stems from the concolic execution or not, since, for example, its ability in resolving a dataset`s magic values is unclear. In this paper, we propose to address the above problem by generating corpora based on search-hampering features. As a proof-of-concept, we have designed FEData, a prototype corpus that currently focuses on four search-hampering features to generate vulnerable programs for fuzz testing. Unlike existing corpora that can only answer "how", FEData can also further answer "why" by exposing (or understanding) the reasons for the identified weaknesses in a fuzzer. The "why" information serves as the key to the improvement of fuzzers.

Triple Trustworthiness Measurement for Knowledge Graph

The Knowledge graph (KG) uses the triples to describe the facts in the real world. It has been widely used in intelligent analysis and applications. However, possible noises and conflicts are inevitably introduced in the process of constructing. And the KG based tasks or applications assume that the knowledge in the KG is completely correct and inevitably bring about potential deviations. In this paper, we establish a knowledge graph triple trustworthiness measurement model that quantify their semantic correctness and the true degree of the facts expressed. The model is a crisscrossing neural network structure. It synthesizes the internal semantic information in the triples and the global inference information of the KG to achieve the trustworthiness measurement and fusion in the three levels of entity level, relationship level, and KG global level. We analyzed the validity of the model output confidence values, and conducted experiments in the real-world dataset FB15K (from Freebase) for the knowledge graph error detection task. The experimental results showed that compared with other models, our model achieved significant and consistent improvements.

A Truthful FPTAS Mechanism for Emergency Demand Response in Colocation Data Centers

Demand response (DR) is not only a crucial solution to the demand side management but also a vital means of electricity market in maintaining power grid reliability, sustainability and stability. DR can enable consumers (e.g. data centers) to reduce their electricity consumption when the supply of electricity is a shortage. The consumers will be rewarded in the case of DR if they reduce or shift some of their energy usage during peak hours. Aiming at solving the efficiency of DR, in this paper, we present MEDR, a mechanism on emergency DR in colocation data center. First, we formalize the MEDR problem and propose a dynamic programming to solve the optimization version of the problem. We then design a deterministic mechanism as a solution to solve the MEDR problem. We show that our proposed mechanism is truthful. Next, we prove that our mechanism is an FPTAS, i.e., it can be approximated within $1 + ε$ for any given $ε> 0$, while the running time of our mechanism is polynomial in $n$ and $1/ε$, where $n$ is the number of tenants in the datacenter. Furthermore, we also give an auction system covering the efficient FPTAS algorithm as bidding decision program for DR in colocation datacenter. Finally, we choose a practical smart grid dataset to build a large number of datasets for simulation in performance evaluation. By evaluating metrics of the approximation ratio of our mechanism, the non-negative utility of tenants and social cost of colocation datacenter, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our work.

ML-Net: multi-label classification of biomedical texts with deep neural networks

In multi-label text classification, each textual document can be assigned with one or more labels. Due to this nature, the multi-label text classification task is often considered to be more challenging compared to the binary or multi-class text classification problems. As an important task with broad applications in biomedicine such as assigning diagnosis codes, a number of different computational methods (e.g. training and combining binary classifiers for each label) have been proposed in recent years. However, many suffered from modest accuracy and efficiency, with only limited success in practical use. We propose ML-Net, a novel deep learning framework, for multi-label classification of biomedical texts. As an end-to-end system, ML-Net combines a label prediction network with an automated label count prediction mechanism to output an optimal set of labels by leveraging both predicted confidence score of each label and the contextual information in the target document. We evaluate ML-Net on three independent, publicly-available corpora in two kinds of text genres: biomedical literature and clinical notes. For evaluation, example-based measures such as precision, recall and f-measure are used. ML-Net is compared with several competitive machine learning baseline models. Our benchmarking results show that ML-Net compares favorably to the state-of-the-art methods in multi-label classification of biomedical texts. ML-NET is also shown to be robust when evaluated on different text genres in biomedicine. Unlike traditional machine learning methods, ML-Net does not require human efforts in feature engineering and is highly efficient and scalable approach to tasks with a large set of labels (no need to build individual classifiers for each separate label). Finally, ML-NET is able to dynamically estimate the label count based on the document context in a more systematic and accurate manner.

An objective-adaptive refinement criterion based on modified ridge extraction method for finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) calculation

High-accuracy and high-efficiency finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) calculation method has long been a research hot point, and adaptive refinement method is a kind of method in this field. The proposed objective-adaptive refinement (OAR) criterion can put adaptive particles at the vicinity of FTLE ridges. The FTLE ridge is extracted not simply by the magnitude of FTLE (would cause false negative refinement) and error (would cause false positive refinement) but by a modified gradient climbing method. Moreover, the refinement regions converge to some certain region because of the objectivity of the refinement region.

Using AI to Hack IA: A New Stealthy Spyware Against Voice Assistance Functions in Smart Phones

Intelligent Personal Assistant (IA), also known as Voice Assistant (VA), has become increasingly popular as a human-computer interaction mechanism. Most smartphones have built-in voice assistants that are granted high privilege, which is able to access system resources and private information. Thus, once the voice assistants are exploited by attackers, they become the stepping stones for the attackers to hack into the smartphones. Prior work shows that the voice assistant can be activated by inter-component communication mechanism, through an official Android API. However, this attack method is only effective on Google Assistant, which is the official voice assistant developed by Google. Voice assistants in other operating systems, even custom Android systems, cannot be activated by this mechanism. Prior work also shows that the attacking voice commands can be inaudible, but it requires additional instruments to launch the attack, making it unrealistic for real-world attack. We propose an attacking framework, which records the activation voice of the user, and launch the attack by playing the activation voice and attack commands via the built-in speaker. An intelligent stealthy module is designed to decide on the suitable occasion to launch the attack, preventing the attack being noticed by the user. We demonstrate proof-of-concept attacks on Google Assistant, showing the feasibility and stealthiness of the proposed attack scheme. We suggest to revise the activation logic of voice assistant to be resilient to the speaker based attack.

Motion of grain boundaries incorporating dislocation structure

In this paper, we present a continuum model for the dynamics of low angle grain boundaries in two dimensions based on the motion of constituent dislocations of the grain boundaries. The continuum model consists of an equation for the motion of grain boundaries (i.e., motion of the constituent dislocations in the grain boundary normal direction) and equations for the dislocation structure evolution on the grain boundaries. This model is derived from the discrete dislocation dynamics model. The long-range elastic interaction between dislocations is included in the continuum model, which ensures that the dislocation structure on a grain boundary is consistent with the Frank's formula. These evolution of the grain boundary and its dislocation structure are able to describe both normal motion and tangential translation of the grain boundary and grain rotation due to both coupling and sliding. Since the continuum model is based upon dislocation structure, it naturally accounts for the grain boundary shape change during the motion and rotation of the grain boundary by motion and reaction of the constituent dislocations. Using the derived continuum grain boundary dynamics model, simulations are performed for the dynamics of circular and non-circular two dimensional grain boundaries, and the results are validated by discrete dislocation dynamics simulations.

The Role of Grain Boundaries under Long-Time Radiation

Materials containing a high proportion of grain boundaries offer significant potential for the development of radiation-resistent structural materials. However, a proper understanding of the connection between the radiation-induced microstructural behaviour of grain boundary and its impact at long natural time scales is still missing. In this letter, point defect absorption at interfaces is summarised by a jump Robin-type condition at a coarse-grained level, wherein the role of interface microstructure is effectively taken into account. Then a concise formula linking the sink strength of a polycrystalline aggregate with its grain size is introduced, and is well compared with experimental observation. Based on the derived model, a coarse-grained formulation incorporating the coupled evolution of grain boundaries and point defects is proposed, so as to underpin the study of long-time morphological evolution of grains induced by irradiation. Our simulation results suggest that the presence of point defect sources within a grain further accelerates its shrinking process, and radiation tends to trigger the extension of twin boundary sections.

Automated Big Traffic Analytics for Cyber Security

Network traffic analytics technology is a cornerstone for cyber security systems. We demonstrate its use through three popular and contemporary cyber security applications in intrusion detection, malware analysis and botnet detection. However, automated traffic analytics faces the challenges raised by big traffic data. In terms of big data's three characteristics --- volume, variety and velocity, we review three state of the art techniques to mitigate the key challenges including real-time traffic classification, unknown traffic classification, and efficiency of classifiers. The new techniques using statistical features, unknown discovery and correlation analytics show promising potentials to deal with big traffic data. Readers are encouraged to devote to improving the performance and practicability of automatic traffic analytic in cyber security.

A continuum model for distributions of dislocations incorporating short-range interactions

Dislocations are the main carriers of the permanent deformation of crystals. For simulations of engineering applications, continuum models where material microstructures are represented by continuous density distributions of dislocations are preferred. It is challenging to capture in the continuum model the short-range dislocation interactions, which vanish after the standard averaging procedure from discrete dislocation models. In this study, we consider systems of parallel straight dislocation walls and develop continuum descriptions for the short-range interactions of dislocations by using asymptotic analysis. The obtained continuum short-range interaction formulas are incorporated in the continuum model for dislocation dynamics based on a pair of dislocation density potential functions that represent continuous distributions of dislocations. This derived continuum model is able to describe the anisotropic dislocation interaction and motion. Mathematically, these short-range interaction terms ensure strong stability property of the continuum model that is possessed by the discrete dislocation dynamics model. The derived continuum model is validated by comparisons with the discrete dislocation dynamical simulation results.

From atomistic model to the Peierls-Nabarro model with $γ$-surface for dislocations

The Peierls-Nabarro (PN) model for dislocations is a hybrid model that incorporates the atomistic information of the dislocation core structure into the continuum theory. In this paper, we study the convergence from a full atomistic model to the PN model with $γ$-surface for the dislocation in a bilayer system (e.g. bilayer graphene). We prove that the displacement field of and the total energy of the dislocation solution of the PN model are asymptotically close to those of the full atomistic model. Our work can be considered as a generalization of the analysis of the convergence from atomistic model to Cauchy-Born rule for crystals without defects in the literature.
