Data Augmentation for Text-based Person Retrieval Using Large Language Models

Text-based Person Retrieval (TPR) aims to retrieve person images that match the description given a text query. The performance improvement of the TPR model relies on high-quality data for supervised training. However, it is difficult to construct a large-scale, high-quality TPR dataset due to expensive annotation and privacy protection. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have approached or even surpassed human performance on many NLP tasks, creating the possibility to expand high-quality TPR datasets. This paper proposes an LLM-based Data Augmentation (LLM-DA) method for TPR. LLM-DA uses LLMs to rewrite the text in the current TPR dataset, achieving high-quality expansion of the dataset concisely and efficiently. These rewritten texts are able to increase the diversity of vocabulary and sentence structure while retaining the original key concepts and semantic information. In order to alleviate the hallucinations of LLMs, LLM-DA introduces a Text Faithfulness Filter (TFF) to filter out unfaithful rewritten text. To balance the contributions of original text and augmented text, a Balanced Sampling Strategy (BSS) is proposed to control the proportion of original text and augmented text used for training. LLM-DA is a plug-and-play method that can be easily integrated into various TPR models. Comprehensive experiments on three TPR benchmarks show that LLM-DA can improve the retrieval performance of current TPR models.

Paired Conditional Generative Adversarial Network for Highly Accelerated Liver 4D MRI

Purpose: 4D MRI with high spatiotemporal resolution is desired for image-guided liver radiotherapy. Acquiring densely sampling k-space data is time-consuming. Accelerated acquisition with sparse samples is desirable but often causes degraded image quality or long reconstruction time. We propose the Reconstruct Paired Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (Re-Con-GAN) to shorten the 4D MRI reconstruction time while maintaining the reconstruction quality. Methods: Patients who underwent free-breathing liver 4D MRI were included in the study. Fully- and retrospectively under-sampled data at 3, 6 and 10 times (3x, 6x and 10x) were first reconstructed using the nuFFT algorithm. Re-Con-GAN then trained input and output in pairs. Three types of networks, ResNet9, UNet and reconstruction swin transformer, were explored as generators. PatchGAN was selected as the discriminator. Re-Con-GAN processed the data (3D+t) as temporal slices (2D+t). A total of 48 patients with 12332 temporal slices were split into training (37 patients with 10721 slices) and test (11 patients with 1611 slices). Results: Re-Con-GAN consistently achieved comparable/better PSNR, SSIM, and RMSE scores compared to CS/UNet models. The inference time of Re-Con-GAN, UNet and CS are 0.15s, 0.16s, and 120s. The GTV detection task showed that Re-Con-GAN and CS, compared to UNet, better improved the dice score (3x Re-Con-GAN 80.98%; 3x CS 80.74%; 3x UNet 79.88%) of unprocessed under-sampled images (3x 69.61%). Conclusion: A generative network with adversarial training is proposed with promising and efficient reconstruction results demonstrated on an in-house dataset. The rapid and qualitative reconstruction of 4D liver MR has the potential to facilitate online adaptive MR-guided radiotherapy for liver cancer.

Explainable Semantic Communication for Text Tasks

Task-oriented semantic communication has gained increasing attention due to its ability to reduce the amount of transmitted data without sacrificing task performance. Although some prior efforts have been dedicated to developing semantic communications, the semantics in these works remains to be unexplainable. Challenges related to explainable semantic representation and knowledge-based semantic compression have yet to be explored. In this paper, we propose a triplet-based explainable semantic communication (TESC) scheme for representing text semantics efficiently. Specifically, we develop a semantic extraction method to convert text into triplets while using syntactic dependency analysis to enhance semantic completeness. Then, we design a semantic filtering method to further compress the duplicate and task-irrelevant triplets based on prior knowledge. The filtered triplets are encoded and transmitted to the receiver for completing intelligent tasks. Furthermore, we apply the propsed TESC scheme to two emblematic text tasks: sentiment analysis and question answering, in which the semantic codec is meticulously customized for each task. Experimental results demonstrate that 1) TESC scheme outperforms benchmarks in terms of Top-1 accuracy and transmission efficiency, and 2) TESC scheme enjoys about 150% performance gain compared to the traditional communication method.

Exploring Correlations of Self-Supervised Tasks for Graphs

Graph self-supervised learning has sparked a research surge in training informative representations without accessing any labeled data. However, our understanding of graph self-supervised learning remains limited, and the inherent relationships between various self-supervised tasks are still unexplored. Our paper aims to provide a fresh understanding of graph self-supervised learning based on task correlations. Specifically, we evaluate the performance of the representations trained by one specific task on other tasks and define correlation values to quantify task correlations. Through this process, we unveil the task correlations between various self-supervised tasks and can measure their expressive capabilities, which are closely related to downstream performance. By analyzing the correlation values between tasks across various datasets, we reveal the complexity of task correlations and the limitations of existing multi-task learning methods. To obtain more capable representations, we propose Graph Task Correlation Modeling (GraphTCM) to illustrate the task correlations and utilize it to enhance graph self-supervised training. The experimental results indicate that our method significantly outperforms existing methods across various downstream tasks.

Magnetic interactions based on proton orbital motion in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$

The microscopic origin of the remarkable optoelectronic properties of one of the most studied contemporary materials remains unclear. Here, we identify the existence of magnetic interactions between intermolecular proton orbitals in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$. In particular, a unique sharp drop and a pronounced step-up discontinuity in the magnetic susceptibility at the tetragonal-to-cubic phase transitions are identified in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ and CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$, respectively. The magnetic interactions in the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases are dependent on thermal history and lattice orientation while nearly independent of the applied external magnetic field. In CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$, the CH$_3$ and NH$_3$$^+$ components reorient in an uncorrelated fashion resulting the cubic phase to also exhibit magnetic anisotropy. Our findings provide a potential link connecting the highly light-absorbing CH$_3$NH$_3$$^+$ and the exceptional properties of the charge carriers of the inorganic framework in hybrid perovskite solar cells.

TAI++: Text as Image for Multi-Label Image Classification by Co-Learning Transferable Prompt

The recent introduction of prompt tuning based on pre-trained vision-language models has dramatically improved the performance of multi-label image classification. However, some existing strategies that have been explored still have drawbacks, i.e., either exploiting massive labeled visual data at a high cost or using text data only for text prompt tuning and thus failing to learn the diversity of visual knowledge. Hence, the application scenarios of these methods are limited. In this paper, we propose a pseudo-visual prompt~(PVP) module for implicit visual prompt tuning to address this problem. Specifically, we first learn the pseudo-visual prompt for each category, mining diverse visual knowledge by the well-aligned space of pre-trained vision-language models. Then, a co-learning strategy with a dual-adapter module is designed to transfer visual knowledge from pseudo-visual prompt to text prompt, enhancing their visual representation abilities. Experimental results on VOC2007, MS-COCO, and NUSWIDE datasets demonstrate that our method can surpass state-of-the-art~(SOTA) methods across various settings for multi-label image classification tasks. The code is available at https://github.com/njustkmg/PVP.

Forecasting high-dimensional functional time series with dual-factor structures

We propose a dual-factor model for high-dimensional functional time series (HDFTS) that considers multiple populations. The HDFTS is first decomposed into a collection of functional time series (FTS) in a lower dimension and a group of population-specific basis functions. The system of basis functions describes cross-sectional heterogeneity, while the reduced-dimension FTS retains most of the information common to multiple populations. The low-dimensional FTS is further decomposed into a product of common functional loadings and a matrix-valued time series that contains the most temporal dynamics embedded in the original HDFTS. The proposed general-form dual-factor structure is connected to several commonly used functional factor models. We demonstrate the finite-sample performances of the proposed method in recovering cross-sectional basis functions and extracting common features using simulated HDFTS. An empirical study shows that the proposed model produces more accurate point and interval forecasts for subnational age-specific mortality rates in Japan. The financial benefits associated with the improved mortality forecasts are translated into a life annuity pricing scheme.

Salient Object Detection From Arbitrary Modalities

Toward desirable saliency prediction, the types and numbers of inputs for a salient object detection (SOD) algorithm may dynamically change in many real-life applications. However, existing SOD algorithms are mainly designed or trained for one particular type of inputs, failing to be generalized to other types of inputs. Consequentially, more types of SOD algorithms need to be prepared in advance for handling different types of inputs, raising huge hardware and research costs. Differently, in this paper, we propose a new type of SOD task, termed Arbitrary Modality SOD (AM SOD). The most prominent characteristics of AM SOD are that the modality types and modality numbers will be arbitrary or dynamically changed. The former means that the inputs to the AM SOD algorithm may be arbitrary modalities such as RGB, depths, or even any combination of them. While, the latter indicates that the inputs may have arbitrary modality numbers as the input type is changed, e.g. single-modality RGB image, dual-modality RGB-Depth (RGB-D) images or triple-modality RGB-Depth-Thermal (RGB-D-T) images. Accordingly, a preliminary solution to the above challenges, ı.e. a modality switch network (MSN), is proposed in this paper. In particular, a modality switch feature extractor (MSFE) is first designed to extract discriminative features from each modality effectively by introducing some modality indicators, which will generate some weights for modality switching. Subsequently, a dynamic fusion module (DFM) is proposed to adaptively fuse features from a variable number of modalities based on a novel Transformer structure. Finally, a new dataset, named AM-XD, is constructed to facilitate research on AM SOD. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our AM SOD method can effectively cope with changes in the type and number of input modalities for robust salient object detection.

Square-Root Higher-Order Unscented Estimators for Robust Orbit Determination

Orbit determination (OD) is a fundamental problem in space surveillance and tracking, crucial for ensuring the safety of space assets. Real-world ground-based optical tracking scenarios often involve challenges such as limited measurement time, short visible arcs, and the presence of outliers, leading to sparse and non-Gaussian observational data. Additionally, the highly perturbative and nonlinear orbit dynamics of resident space objects (RSOs) in low Earth orbit (LEO) add further complexity to the OD problem. This paper introduces a novel variant of the higher-order unscented Kalman estimator (HOUSE) called $w$-HOUSE, which employs a square-root formulation and addresses the challenges posed by nonlinear and non-Gaussian OD problems. The effectiveness of $w$-HOUSE was demonstrated through synthetic and real-world measurements, specifically outlier-contaminated angle-only measurements collected for the Sentinel 6A satellite flying in LEO. Comparative analyses are conducted with the original HOUSE (referred to as $δ$-HOUSE), unscented Kalman filters (UKF), conjugate unscented transformation (CUT) filters, and precise orbit determination solutions estimated via onboard global navigation satellite systems measurements. The results reveal that the proposed $w$-HOUSE filter exhibits greater robustness when dealing with varying values of the dependent parameter compared to the original $δ$-HOUSE. Moreover, it surpasses all other filters in terms of positioning accuracy, achieving three-dimensional root-mean-square errors of less than 60 m in a three-day scenario. This research suggests that the new $w$-HOUSE filter represents a viable alternative to UKF and CUT filters, offering improved positioning performance in handling the nonlinear and non-Gaussian OD problem associated with LEO RSOs.

Modality Prompts for Arbitrary Modality Salient Object Detection

This paper delves into the task of arbitrary modality salient object detection (AM SOD), aiming to detect salient objects from arbitrary modalities, eg RGB images, RGB-D images, and RGB-D-T images. A novel modality-adaptive Transformer (MAT) will be proposed to investigate two fundamental challenges of AM SOD, ie more diverse modality discrepancies caused by varying modality types that need to be processed, and dynamic fusion design caused by an uncertain number of modalities present in the inputs of multimodal fusion strategy. Specifically, inspired by prompt learning's ability of aligning the distributions of pre-trained models to the characteristic of downstream tasks by learning some prompts, MAT will first present a modality-adaptive feature extractor (MAFE) to tackle the diverse modality discrepancies by introducing a modality prompt for each modality. In the training stage, a new modality translation contractive (MTC) loss will be further designed to assist MAFE in learning those modality-distinguishable modality prompts. Accordingly, in the testing stage, MAFE can employ those learned modality prompts to adaptively adjust its feature space according to the characteristics of the input modalities, thus being able to extract discriminative unimodal features. Then, MAFE will present a channel-wise and spatial-wise fusion hybrid (CSFH) strategy to meet the demand for dynamic fusion. For that, CSFH dedicates a channel-wise dynamic fusion module (CDFM) and a novel spatial-wise dynamic fusion module (SDFM) to fuse the unimodal features from varying numbers of modalities and meanwhile effectively capture cross-modal complementary semantic and detail information, respectively. Moreover, CSFH will carefully align CDFM and SDFM to different levels of unimodal features based on their characteristics for more effective complementary information exploitation.

In this competition we employed a model fusion approach to achieve object detection results close to those of real images. Our method is based on the CO-DETR model, which was trained on two sets of data: one containing images under dark conditions and another containing images enhanced with low-light conditions. We used various enhancement techniques on the test data to generate multiple sets of prediction results. Finally, we applied a clustering aggregation method guided by IoU thresholds to select the optimal results.

Our proposed method leverages the powerful pre-trained model Swin Transformer v2 Large as the backbone and employs carefully designed data augmentation and exponential moving average during training to enhance the model's generalization capability and stability. In the testing stage, a method called ReAct is utilized to rectify activation values and utilize Energy Score for more accurate measurement of model uncertainty, significantly improving out-of-distribution detection performance. Furthermore, test time augmentation is employed to enhance classification accuracy and prediction stability. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate that each additional technique significantly improves classification accuracy, confirming their effectiveness in classifying maritime and atmospheric phenomena in SAR imagery.

Solution for Authenticity Identification of Typical Target Remote Sensing Images

In this paper, we propose a basic RGB single-mode model based on weakly supervised training under pseudo labels, which performs high-precision authenticity identification under multi-scene typical target remote sensing images. Due to the imprecision of Mask generation, we divide the task into two sub-tasks: generating pseudo-mask and fine-tuning model based on generated Masks. In generating pseudo masks, we use MM-Fusion as the base model to generate masks for large objects such as planes and ships. By manually calibrating the Mask of a small object such as a car, a highly accurate pseudo-mask is obtained. For the task of fine-tuning models based on generating masks, we use the WSCL model as the base model. It is worth noting that due to the difference between the generated pseudo-Masks and the real Masks, we discard the image feature extractors such as SRM and Noiseprint++ in WSCL, and select the unscaled original image for training alone, which greatly ensures the match between the image and the original label. The final trained model achieved a score of 90.7702 on the test set.

Advancing low-field MRI with a universal denoising imaging transformer: Towards fast and high-quality imaging

Recent developments in low-field (LF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems present remarkable opportunities for affordable and widespread MRI access. A robust denoising method to overcome the intrinsic low signal-noise-ratio (SNR) barrier is critical to the success of LF MRI. However, current data-driven MRI denoising methods predominantly handle magnitude images and rely on customized models with constrained data diversity and quantity, which exhibit limited generalizability in clinical applications across diverse MRI systems, pulse sequences, and organs. In this study, we present ImT-MRD: a complex-valued imaging transformer trained on a vast number of clinical MRI scans aiming at universal MR denoising at LF systems. Compared with averaging multiple-repeated scans for higher image SNR, the model obtains better image quality from fewer repetitions, demonstrating its capability for accelerating scans under various clinical settings. Moreover, with its complex-valued image input, the model can denoise intermediate results before advanced post-processing and prepare high-quality data for further MRI research. By delivering universal and accurate denoising across clinical and research tasks, our model holds great promise to expedite the evolution of LF MRI for accessible and equal biomedical applications.

BrainODE: Dynamic Brain Signal Analysis via Graph-Aided Neural Ordinary Differential Equations

Brain network analysis is vital for understanding the neural interactions regarding brain structures and functions, and identifying potential biomarkers for clinical phenotypes. However, widely used brain signals such as Blood Oxygen Level Dependent (BOLD) time series generated from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) often manifest three challenges: (1) missing values, (2) irregular samples, and (3) sampling misalignment, due to instrumental limitations, impacting downstream brain network analysis and clinical outcome predictions. In this work, we propose a novel model called BrainODE to achieve continuous modeling of dynamic brain signals using Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE). By learning latent initial values and neural ODE functions from irregular time series, BrainODE effectively reconstructs brain signals at any time point, mitigating the aforementioned three data challenges of brain signals altogether. Comprehensive experimental results on real-world neuroimaging datasets demonstrate the superior performance of BrainODE and its capability of addressing the three data challenges.

Implementation of Big AI Models for Wireless Networks with Collaborative Edge Computing

Big Artificial Intelligence (AI) models have emerged as a crucial element in various intelligent applications at the edge, such as voice assistants in smart homes and autonomous robotics in smart factories. Training big AI models, e.g., for personalized fine-tuning and continual model refinement, poses significant challenges to edge devices due to the inherent conflict between limited computing resources and intensive workload associated with training. Despite the constraints of on-device training, traditional approaches usually resort to aggregating training data and sending it to a remote cloud for centralized training. Nevertheless, this approach is neither sustainable, which strains long-range backhaul transmission and energy-consuming datacenters, nor safely private, which shares users' raw data with remote infrastructures. To address these challenges, we alternatively observe that prevalent edge environments usually contain a diverse collection of trusted edge devices with untapped idle resources, which can be leveraged for edge training acceleration. Motivated by this, in this article, we propose collaborative edge training, a novel training mechanism that orchestrates a group of trusted edge devices as a resource pool for expedited, sustainable big AI model training at the edge. As an initial step, we present a comprehensive framework for building collaborative edge training systems and analyze in-depth its merits and sustainable scheduling choices following its workflow. To further investigate the impact of its parallelism design, we empirically study a case of four typical parallelisms from the perspective of energy demand with realistic testbeds. Finally, we discuss open challenges for sustainable collaborative edge training to point to future directions of edge-centric big AI model training.

AMMUNet: Multi-Scale Attention Map Merging for Remote Sensing Image Segmentation

The advancement of deep learning has driven notable progress in remote sensing semantic segmentation. Attention mechanisms, while enabling global modeling and utilizing contextual information, face challenges of high computational costs and require window-based operations that weaken capturing long-range dependencies, hindering their effectiveness for remote sensing image processing. In this letter, we propose AMMUNet, a UNet-based framework that employs multi-scale attention map merging, comprising two key innovations: the granular multi-head self-attention (GMSA) module and the attention map merging mechanism (AMMM). GMSA efficiently acquires global information while substantially mitigating computational costs in contrast to global multi-head self-attention mechanism. This is accomplished through the strategic utilization of dimension correspondence to align granularity and the reduction of relative position bias parameters, thereby optimizing computational efficiency. The proposed AMMM effectively combines multi-scale attention maps into a unified representation using a fixed mask template, enabling the modeling of global attention mechanism. Experimental evaluations highlight the superior performance of our approach, achieving remarkable mean intersection over union (mIoU) scores of 75.48\% on the challenging Vaihingen dataset and an exceptional 77.90\% on the Potsdam dataset, demonstrating the superiority of our method in precise remote sensing semantic segmentation. Practical GHz single-cavity all-fiber dual-comb laser for high-speed spectroscopy

Dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) with few-GHz tooth spacing that provides the optimal trade-off between spectral resolution and refresh rate is a powerful tool for measuring and analyzing rapidly evolving transient events. Despite such an exciting opportunity, existing technologies compromise either the spectral resolution or refresh rate, leaving few-GHz DCS with robust design largely unmet for frontier applications. In this work, we demonstrate a novel GHz DCS by exploring the multimode interference-mediated spectral filtering effect in an all-fiber ultrashort cavity configuration. The GHz single-cavity all-fiber dual-comb source is seeded by a dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser operating at fundamental repetition rates of about 1.0 GHz differing by 148 kHz, which has an excellent stability in the free-running state that the Allan deviation is only 101.7 mHz for an average time of 1 second. Thanks to the large repetition rate difference between the asynchronous dichromatic pulse trains, the GHz DCS enables a refresh time as short as 6.75 us, making it promising for studying nonrepeatable transient phenomena in real time. To this end, the practicality of the present GHz DCS is validated by successfully capturing the 'shock waves' of balloon and firecracker explosions outdoors. This GHz single-cavity all-fiber dual-comb system promises a noteworthy improvement in acquisition speed and reliability without sacrificing measurement accuracy, anticipated as a practical tool for high-speed applications.
