Distilling Coarse-to-Fine Semantic Matching Knowledge for Weakly Supervised 3D Visual Grounding

3D visual grounding involves finding a target object in a 3D scene that corresponds to a given sentence query. Although many approaches have been proposed and achieved impressive performance, they all require dense object-sentence pair annotations in 3D point clouds, which are both time-consuming and expensive. To address the problem that fine-grained annotated data is difficult to obtain, we propose to leverage weakly supervised annotations to learn the 3D visual grounding model, i.e., only coarse scene-sentence correspondences are used to learn object-sentence links. To accomplish this, we design a novel semantic matching model that analyzes the semantic similarity between object proposals and sentences in a coarse-to-fine manner. Specifically, we first extract object proposals and coarsely select the top-K candidates based on feature and class similarity matrices. Next, we reconstruct the masked keywords of the sentence using each candidate one by one, and the reconstructed accuracy finely reflects the semantic similarity of each candidate to the query. Additionally, we distill the coarse-to-fine semantic matching knowledge into a typical two-stage 3D visual grounding model, which reduces inference costs and improves performance by taking full advantage of the well-studied structure of the existing architectures. We conduct extensive experiments on ScanRefer, Nr3D, and Sr3D, which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

BuboGPT: Enabling Visual Grounding in Multi-Modal LLMs

LLMs have demonstrated remarkable abilities at interacting with humans through language, especially with the usage of instruction-following data. Recent advancements in LLMs, such as MiniGPT-4, LLaVA, and X-LLM, further enlarge their abilities by incorporating multi-modal inputs, including image, video, and speech. Despite their effectiveness at generating precise and detailed language understanding of the given modality signal, these LLMs give up the ability to ground specific parts of inputs, thus only constructing a coarse-grained mapping. However, explicit and informative correspondence between text and other modalities will not only improve the user experience but also help to expand the application scenario of multi-modal LLMs. Therefore, we propose BuboGPT, a multi-modal LLM with visual grounding that can perform cross-modal interaction between vision, audio and language, providing fine-grained understanding of visual objects and other given modalities. As a result, BuboGPT is able to point out the specific location of an object in the image, when it is generating response or description for that object. Our contributions are two-fold: 1) An off-the-shelf visual grounding module based on SAM that extracts entities in a sentence and find corresponding masks in the image. 2) A two-stage training scheme and instruction dataset to endow joint text-image-audio understanding. Our experiments show that BuboGPT achieves impressive multi-modality understanding and visual grounding abilities during the interaction with human. It performs consistently well when provided by arbitrary modality combinations (either aligned or unaligned). Our code, model and dataset are available at https://bubo-gpt.github.io .

A novel small-scale self-focusing suppression method for ultrahigh peak power lasers

We proposed a novel method, using an asymmetric four grating compressor (AFGC) to improve the spatial uniformity of laser beams, to suppress the small-scale self-focusing (SSSF) during the post-compression of ultrahigh peak power lasers. The spatial uniformity is an important factor in performing post-compression, due to the spatial intensity nonuniformity will be enhanced while going through a nonlinear process. And what's more, the strong intensity spikes induced during nonlinear process can seriously damage the subsequent optical components. Moreover, the three-dimensional numerical simulations of the post-compression are implemented based on a petawatt (PW) class laser with a standard compressor and an AFGC. The results show that the post-compression with AFGC can shorten the laser pulses from 30fs to sub-10fs and meanwhile efficiently suppress SSSF. This work provides a promising scheme for the post-compression scaling to PW and even 10PW lasers.

DVFO: Learning-Based DVFS for Energy-Efficient Edge-Cloud Collaborative Inference

Due to limited resources on edge and different characteristics of deep neural network (DNN) models, it is a big challenge to optimize DNN inference performance in terms of energy consumption and end-to-end latency on edge devices. In addition to the dynamic voltage frequency scaling (DVFS) technique, the edge-cloud architecture provides a collaborative approach for efficient DNN inference. However, current edge-cloud collaborative inference methods have not optimized various compute resources on edge devices. Thus, we propose DVFO, a novel DVFS-enabled edge-cloud collaborative inference framework, which co-optimizes DVFS and offloading parameters via deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Specifically, DVFO automatically co-optimizes 1) the CPU, GPU and memory frequencies of edge devices, and 2) the feature maps to be offloaded to cloud servers. In addition, it leverages a thinking-while-moving concurrent mechanism to accelerate the DRL learning process, and a spatial-channel attention mechanism to extract DNN feature maps of secondary importance for workload offloading. This approach improves inference performance for different DNN models under various edge-cloud network conditions. Extensive evaluations using two datasets and six widely-deployed DNN models on three heterogeneous edge devices show that DVFO significantly reduces the energy consumption by 33% on average, compared to state-of-the-art schemes. Moreover, DVFO achieves up to 28.6%-59.1% end-to-end latency reduction, while maintaining accuracy within 1% loss on average.

Dynamics of dissipative Landau-Zener transitions in an anisotropic three-level system

We investigate the dynamics of Landau-Zener transitions in an anisotropic, dissipative three-level model (3-LZM) using the numerically accurate multiple Davydov D2 Ansatz in the framework of time-dependent variation. It is demonstrated that a non-monotonic relationship exists between the Landau-Zener transition probability and the phonon coupling strength when the 3-LZM is driven by a linear external field. Under the influence of a periodic driving field, phonon coupling may induce peaks in contour plots of the transition probability when the magnitude of the system anisotropy matches the phonon frequency. Dynamics of the 3-LZM have also been probed in the presence of a super-ohmic phonon bath when driven by a periodic driving field. It is found that both the period and the amplitude of the Rabi cycle decay exponentially with the increasing bath coupling strength.

CLIP3Dstyler: Language Guided 3D Arbitrary Neural Style Transfer

In this paper, we propose a novel language-guided 3D arbitrary neural style transfer method (CLIP3Dstyler). We aim at stylizing any 3D scene with an arbitrary style from a text description, and synthesizing the novel stylized view, which is more flexible than the image-conditioned style transfer. Compared with the previous 2D method CLIPStyler, we are able to stylize a 3D scene and generalize to novel scenes without re-train our model. A straightforward solution is to combine previous image-conditioned 3D style transfer and text-conditioned 2D style transfer \bigskip methods. However, such a solution cannot achieve our goal due to two main challenges. First, there is no multi-modal model matching point clouds and language at different feature scales (low-level, high-level). Second, we observe a style mixing issue when we stylize the content with different style conditions from text prompts. To address the first issue, we propose a 3D stylization framework to match the point cloud features with text features in local and global views. For the second issue, we propose an improved directional divergence loss to make arbitrary text styles more distinguishable as a complement to our framework. We conduct extensive experiments to show the effectiveness of our model on text-guided 3D scene style transfer.

A Classical Architecture For Digital Quantum Computers

Scaling bottlenecks the making of digital quantum computers, posing challenges from both the quantum and the classical components. We present a classical architecture to cope with a comprehensive list of the latter challenges {\em all at once}, and implement it fully in an end-to-end system by integrating a multi-core RISC-V CPU with our in-house control electronics. Our architecture enables scalable, high-precision control of large quantum processors and accommodates evolving requirements of quantum hardware. A central feature is a microarchitecture executing quantum operations in parallel on arbitrary predefined qubit groups. Another key feature is a reconfigurable quantum instruction set that supports easy qubit re-grouping and instructions extensions. As a demonstration, we implement the widely-studied surface code quantum computing workflow, which is instructive for being demanding on both the controllers and the integrated classical computation. Our design, for the first time, reduces instruction issuing and transmission costs to constants, which do not scale with the number of qubits, without adding any overheads in decoding or dispatching. Rather than relying on specialized hardware for syndrome decoding, our system uses a dedicated multi-core CPU for both qubit control and classical computation, including syndrome decoding. This simplifies the system design and facilitates load-balancing between the quantum and classical components. We implement recent proposals as decoding firmware on a RISC-V system-on-chip (SoC) that parallelizes general inner decoders. By using our in-house Union-Find and PyMatching 2 implementations, we can achieve unprecedented decoding capabilities of up to distances 47 and 67 with the currently available SoCs, under realistic and optimistic assumptions of physical error rate $p=0.001 and p=0.0001, respectively, all in just 1 \textmu s.

RoomDreamer: Text-Driven 3D Indoor Scene Synthesis with Coherent Geometry and Texture

The techniques for 3D indoor scene capturing are widely used, but the meshes produced leave much to be desired. In this paper, we propose "RoomDreamer", which leverages powerful natural language to synthesize a new room with a different style. Unlike existing image synthesis methods, our work addresses the challenge of synthesizing both geometry and texture aligned to the input scene structure and prompt simultaneously. The key insight is that a scene should be treated as a whole, taking into account both scene texture and geometry. The proposed framework consists of two significant components: Geometry Guided Diffusion and Mesh Optimization. Geometry Guided Diffusion for 3D Scene guarantees the consistency of the scene style by applying the 2D prior to the entire scene simultaneously. Mesh Optimization improves the geometry and texture jointly and eliminates the artifacts in the scanned scene. To validate the proposed method, real indoor scenes scanned with smartphones are used for extensive experiments, through which the effectiveness of our method is demonstrated.

Pink-Eggs Dataset V1: A Step Toward Invasive Species Management Using Deep Learning Embedded Solutions

We introduce a novel dataset consisting of images depicting pink eggs that have been identified as Pomacea canaliculata eggs, accompanied by corresponding bounding box annotations. The purpose of this dataset is to aid researchers in the analysis of the spread of Pomacea canaliculata species by utilizing deep learning techniques, as well as supporting other investigative pursuits that require visual data pertaining to the eggs of Pomacea canaliculata. It is worth noting, however, that the identity of the eggs in question is not definitively established, as other species within the same taxonomic family have been observed to lay similar-looking eggs in regions of the Americas. Therefore, a crucial prerequisite to any decision regarding the elimination of these eggs would be to establish with certainty whether they are exclusively attributable to invasive Pomacea canaliculata or if other species are also involved. E2TIMT: Efficient and Effective Modal Adapter for Text Image Machine Translation

Text image machine translation (TIMT) aims to translate texts embedded in images from one source language to another target language. Existing methods, both two-stage cascade and one-stage end-to-end architectures, suffer from different issues. The cascade models can benefit from the large-scale optical character recognition (OCR) and MT datasets but the two-stage architecture is redundant. The end-to-end models are efficient but suffer from training data deficiency. To this end, in our paper, we propose an end-to-end TIMT model fully making use of the knowledge from existing OCR and MT datasets to pursue both an effective and efficient framework. More specifically, we build a novel modal adapter effectively bridging the OCR encoder and MT decoder. End-to-end TIMT loss and cross-modal contrastive loss are utilized jointly to align the feature distribution of the OCR and MT tasks. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method outperforms the existing two-stage cascade models and one-stage end-to-end models with a lighter and faster architecture. Furthermore, the ablation studies verify the generalization of our method, where the proposed modal adapter is effective to bridge various OCR and MT models.

Multi-Teacher Knowledge Distillation For Text Image Machine Translation

Text image machine translation (TIMT) has been widely used in various real-world applications, which translates source language texts in images into another target language sentence. Existing methods on TIMT are mainly divided into two categories: the recognition-then-translation pipeline model and the end-to-end model. However, how to transfer knowledge from the pipeline model into the end-to-end model remains an unsolved problem. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-Teacher Knowledge Distillation (MTKD) method to effectively distillate knowledge into the end-to-end TIMT model from the pipeline model. Specifically, three teachers are utilized to improve the performance of the end-to-end TIMT model. The image encoder in the end-to-end TIMT model is optimized with the knowledge distillation guidance from the recognition teacher encoder, while the sequential encoder and decoder are improved by transferring knowledge from the translation sequential and decoder teacher models. Furthermore, both token and sentence-level knowledge distillations are incorporated to better boost the translation performance. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed MTKD effectively improves the text image translation performance and outperforms existing end-to-end and pipeline models with fewer parameters and less decoding time, illustrating that MTKD can take advantage of both pipeline and end-to-end models.

Instant-NeRF: Instant On-Device Neural Radiance Field Training via Algorithm-Accelerator Co-Designed Near-Memory Processing

Instant on-device Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) are in growing demand for unleashing the promise of immersive AR/VR experiences, but are still limited by their prohibitive training time. Our profiling analysis reveals a memory-bound inefficiency in NeRF training. To tackle this inefficiency, near-memory processing (NMP) promises to be an effective solution, but also faces challenges due to the unique workloads of NeRFs, including the random hash table lookup, random point processing sequence, and heterogeneous bottleneck steps. Therefore, we propose the first NMP framework, Instant-NeRF, dedicated to enabling instant on-device NeRF training. Experiments on eight datasets consistently validate the effectiveness of Instant-NeRF.

BCEdge: SLO-Aware DNN Inference Services with Adaptive Batching on Edge Platforms

As deep neural networks (DNNs) are being applied to a wide range of edge intelligent applications, it is critical for edge inference platforms to have both high-throughput and low-latency at the same time. Such edge platforms with multiple DNN models pose new challenges for scheduler designs. First, each request may have different service level objectives (SLOs) to improve quality of service (QoS). Second, the edge platforms should be able to efficiently schedule multiple heterogeneous DNN models so that system utilization can be improved. To meet these two goals, this paper proposes BCEdge, a novel learning-based scheduling framework that takes adaptive batching and concurrent execution of DNN inference services on edge platforms. We define a utility function to evaluate the trade-off between throughput and latency. The scheduler in BCEdge leverages maximum entropy-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to maximize utility by 1) co-optimizing batch size and 2) the number of concurrent models automatically. Our prototype implemented on different edge platforms shows that the proposed BCEdge enhances utility by up to 37.6% on average, compared to state-of-the-art solutions, while satisfying SLOs.

Qi standard metasurface for free-positioning and multi-device supportive wireless power transfer

Free-positioning and multi-user supportive wireless power transfer systems represent the next-generation technology for wireless charging under the Qi standard. Traditional approaches employ multiple transmitting coils and multi-channel driving circuits with active control algorithms to achieve these goals. However, these traditional approaches are significantly limited by cost, weight, and heating due to their relatively low efficiency. Here, we demonstrate an innovative approach by using a metasurface to achieve free-positioning and multi-user compatibility. The metasurface works as a passive device to reform the magnetic field and enables high-efficiency free-positioning wireless power transfer with only a single transmitting coil. It shows up to 4.6 times improvement in efficiency. The metasurface also increases the coverage area from around 5 cm by 5 cm with over 40% efficiency to around 10 cm by 10 cm with over 70% efficiency. We further show that the system can support multiple receivers. Besides increasing the overall efficiency, we demonstrate tuning the power division between the multiple receivers, enabling compensation of receivers of different sizes to achieve their desired power.

Identity Encoder for Personalized Diffusion

Many applications can benefit from personalized image generation models, including image enhancement, video conferences, just to name a few. Existing works achieved personalization by fine-tuning one model for each person. While being successful, this approach incurs additional computation and storage overhead for each new identity. Furthermore, it usually expects tens or hundreds of examples per identity to achieve the best performance. To overcome these challenges, we propose an encoder-based approach for personalization. We learn an identity encoder which can extract an identity representation from a set of reference images of a subject, together with a diffusion generator that can generate new images of the subject conditioned on the identity representation. Once being trained, the model can be used to generate images of arbitrary identities given a few examples even if the model hasn't been trained on the identity. Our approach greatly reduces the overhead for personalized image generation and is more applicable in many potential applications. Empirical results show that our approach consistently outperforms existing fine-tuning based approach in both image generation and reconstruction, and the outputs is preferred by users more than 95% of the time compared with the best performing baseline.

Randomized Sharpness-Aware Training for Boosting Computational Efficiency in Deep Learning

By driving models to converge to flat minima, sharpness-aware learning algorithms (such as SAM) have shown the power to achieve state-of-the-art performances. However, these algorithms will generally incur one extra forward-backward propagation at each training iteration, which largely burdens the computation especially for scalable models. To this end, we propose a simple yet efficient training scheme, called Randomized Sharpness-Aware Training (RST). Optimizers in RST would perform a Bernoulli trial at each iteration to choose randomly from base algorithms (SGD) and sharpness-aware algorithms (SAM) with a probability arranged by a predefined scheduling function. Due to the mixture of base algorithms, the overall count of propagation pairs could be largely reduced. Also, we give theoretical analysis on the convergence of RST. Then, we empirically study the computation cost and effect of various types of scheduling functions, and give directions on setting appropriate scheduling functions. Further, we extend the RST to a general framework (G-RST), where we can adjust regularization degree on sharpness freely for any scheduling function. We show that G-RST can outperform SAM in most cases while saving 50\% extra computation cost.

DATE: Domain Adaptive Product Seeker for E-commerce

Product Retrieval (PR) and Grounding (PG), aiming to seek image and object-level products respectively according to a textual query, have attracted great interest recently for better shopping experience. Owing to the lack of relevant datasets, we collect two large-scale benchmark datasets from Taobao Mall and Live domains with about 474k and 101k image-query pairs for PR, and manually annotate the object bounding boxes in each image for PG. As annotating boxes is expensive and time-consuming, we attempt to transfer knowledge from annotated domain to unannotated for PG to achieve un-supervised Domain Adaptation (PG-DA). We propose a {\bf D}omain {\bf A}daptive Produc{\bf t} S{\bf e}eker ({\bf DATE}) framework, regarding PR and PG as Product Seeking problem at different levels, to assist the query {\bf date} the product. Concretely, we first design a semantics-aggregated feature extractor for each modality to obtain concentrated and comprehensive features for following efficient retrieval and fine-grained grounding tasks. Then, we present two cooperative seekers to simultaneously search the image for PR and localize the product for PG. Besides, we devise a domain aligner for PG-DA to alleviate uni-modal marginal and multi-modal conditional distribution shift between source and target domains, and design a pseudo box generator to dynamically select reliable instances and generate bounding boxes for further knowledge transfer. Extensive experiments show that our DATE achieves satisfactory performance in fully-supervised PR, PG and un-supervised PG-DA. Our desensitized datasets will be publicly available here\footnote{\url{https://github.com/Taobao-live/Product-Seeking}}.

Taming Encoder for Zero Fine-tuning Image Customization with Text-to-Image Diffusion Models

This paper proposes a method for generating images of customized objects specified by users. The method is based on a general framework that bypasses the lengthy optimization required by previous approaches, which often employ a per-object optimization paradigm. Our framework adopts an encoder to capture high-level identifiable semantics of objects, producing an object-specific embedding with only a single feed-forward pass. The acquired object embedding is then passed to a text-to-image synthesis model for subsequent generation. To effectively blend a object-aware embedding space into a well developed text-to-image model under the same generation context, we investigate different network designs and training strategies, and propose a simple yet effective regularized joint training scheme with an object identity preservation loss. Additionally, we propose a caption generation scheme that become a critical piece in fostering object specific embedding faithfully reflected into the generation process, while keeping control and editing abilities. Once trained, the network is able to produce diverse content and styles, conditioned on both texts and objects. We demonstrate through experiments that our proposed method is able to synthesize images with compelling output quality, appearance diversity, and object fidelity, without the need of test-time optimization. Systematic studies are also conducted to analyze our models, providing insights for future work.
