Synchronous Bidirectional Inference for Neural Sequence Generation

In sequence to sequence generation tasks (e.g. machine translation and abstractive summarization), inference is generally performed in a left-to-right manner to produce the result token by token. The neural approaches, such as LSTM and self-attention networks, are now able to make full use of all the predicted history hypotheses from left side during inference, but cannot meanwhile access any future (right side) information and usually generate unbalanced outputs in which left parts are much more accurate than right ones. In this work, we propose a synchronous bidirectional inference model to generate outputs using both left-to-right and right-to-left decoding simultaneously and interactively. First, we introduce a novel beam search algorithm that facilitates synchronous bidirectional decoding. Then, we present the core approach which enables left-to-right and right-to-left decoding to interact with each other, so as to utilize both the history and future predictions simultaneously during inference. We apply the proposed model to both LSTM and self-attention networks. In addition, we propose two strategies for parameter optimization. The extensive experiments on machine translation and abstractive summarization demonstrate that our synchronous bidirectional inference model can achieve remarkable improvements over the strong baselines.

Intertwined magnetic and nematic orders in semiconducting KFe$_{0.8}$Ag$_{1.2}$Te$_2$

Superconductivity in the iron pnictides emerges from metallic parent compounds exhibiting intertwined stripe-type magnetic order and nematic order, with itinerant electrons suggested to be essential for both. Here we use X-ray and neutron scattering to show that a similar intertwined state is realized in semiconducting KFe$_{0.8}$Ag$_{1.2}$Te$_2$ (K$_5$Fe$_4$Ag$_6$Te$_{10}$) without itinerant electrons. We find Fe atoms in KFe$_{0.8}$Ag$_{1.2}$Te$_2$ form isolated $2\times2$ blocks, separated by nonmagnetic Ag atoms. Long-range magnetic order sets in below $T_{\rm N}\approx35$ K, with magnetic moments within the $2\times2$ Fe blocks ordering into the stripe-type configuration. A nematic order accompanies the magnetic transition, manifest as a structural distortion that breaks the fourfold rotational symmetry of the lattice. The nematic orders in KFe$_{0.8}$Ag$_{1.2}$Te$_2$ and iron pnictide parent compounds are similar in magnitude and how they relate to the magnetic order, indicating a common origin. Since KFe$_{0.8}$Ag$_{1.2}$Te$_2$ is a semiconductor without itinerant electrons, this indicates that local-moment magnetic interactions are integral to its magnetic and nematic orders, and such interactions may play a key role in iron-based superconductivity.

Damping and softening of transverse acoustic phonons in colossal magnetoresistive La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$

Neutron spectroscopy is used to probe transverse acoustic phonons near the (2, 2, 0) Bragg position in colossal magnetoresistive La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. Upon warming to temperatures near Tc = 257 K the phonon peaks in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 soften and damp significantly with the phonon half width at half maximum approaching 2.5 meV for phonons at a reduced wave vector of q = (0.2, 0.2, 0). Concurrently a quasielastic component develops that dominates the spectrum near the polaron position at high temperatures. This quasielastic scattering is ~5 times more intense near Tc than in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 despite comparable structural distortions in the two. The damping becomes more significant near the polaron position with a temperature dependence similar to that of polaron structural distortions. An applied magnetic field of 9.5 T only partially reverses the damping and quasielastic component, despite smaller fields being sufficient to drive the colossal magnetoresistive effect. The phonon energy, on the other hand, is unaffected by field. The damping in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 near Tc at a reduced wave vector of q = (0.25, 0.25, 0) is significantly smaller but displays a similar trend with an applied magnetic field.

Engineering Photon Delocalization in a Rabi Dimer with a Dissipative Bath

A Rabi dimer is used to model a recently reported circuit quantum electrodynamics system composed of two coupled transmission-line resonators with each coupled to one qubit. In this study, a phonon bath is adopted to mimic the multimode micromechanical resonators and is coupled to the qubits in the Rabi dimer. The dynamical behavior of the composite system is studied by the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle combined with the multiple Davydov D$_{2}$ ansätze. Initially all the photons are pumped into the left resonator, and the two qubits are in the down state coupled with the phonon vacuum. In the strong qubit-photon coupling regime, the photon dynamics can be engineered by tuning the qubit-bath coupling strength $α$ and photon delocalization is achieved by increasing $α$. In the absence of dissipation, photons are localized in the initial resonator. Nevertheless, with moderate qubit-bath coupling, photons are delocalized with quasiequilibration of the photon population in two resonators at long times. In this case, high frequency bath modes are activated by interacting with depolarized qubits. For strong dissipation, photon delocalization is achieved via frequent photon-hopping within two resonators and the qubits are suppressed in their initial down state.

Self-Adversarially Learned Bayesian Sampling

Scalable Bayesian sampling is playing an important role in modern machine learning, especially in the fast-developed unsupervised-(deep)-learning models. While tremendous progresses have been achieved via scalable Bayesian sampling such as stochastic gradient MCMC (SG-MCMC) and Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD), the generated samples are typically highly correlated. Moreover, their sample-generation processes are often criticized to be inefficient. In this paper, we propose a novel self-adversarial learning framework that automatically learns a conditional generator to mimic the behavior of a Markov kernel (transition kernel). High-quality samples can be efficiently generated by direct forward passes though a learned generator. Most importantly, the learning process adopts a self-learning paradigm, requiring no information on existing Markov kernels, e.g., knowledge of how to draw samples from them. Specifically, our framework learns to use current samples, either from the generator or pre-provided training data, to update the generator such that the generated samples progressively approach a target distribution, thus it is called self-learning. Experiments on both synthetic and real datasets verify advantages of our framework, outperforming related methods in terms of both sampling efficiency and sample quality.

Variance Reduction in Stochastic Particle-Optimization Sampling

Stochastic particle-optimization sampling (SPOS) is a recently-developed scalable Bayesian sampling framework that unifies stochastic gradient MCMC (SG-MCMC) and Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD) algorithms based on Wasserstein gradient flows. With a rigorous non-asymptotic convergence theory developed recently, SPOS avoids the particle-collapsing pitfall of SVGD. Nevertheless, variance reduction in SPOS has never been studied. In this paper, we bridge the gap by presenting several variance-reduction techniques for SPOS. Specifically, we propose three variants of variance-reduced SPOS, called SAGA particle-optimization sampling (SAGA-POS), SVRG particle-optimization sampling (SVRG-POS) and a variant of SVRG-POS which avoids full gradient computations, denoted as SVRG-POS$^+$. Importantly, we provide non-asymptotic convergence guarantees for these algorithms in terms of 2-Wasserstein metric and analyze their complexities. Remarkably, the results show our algorithms yield better convergence rates than existing variance-reduced variants of stochastic Langevin dynamics, even though more space is required to store the particles in training. Our theory well aligns with experimental results on both synthetic and real datasets.

Amplitude mode in the planar triangular antiferromagnet Na$_{0.9}$MnO$_2$

Amplitude modes arising from symmetry breaking in materials are of broad interest in condensed matter physics. These modes reflect an oscillation in the amplitude of a complex order parameter, yet are typically unstable and decay into oscillations of the order parameter's phase. This renders stable amplitude modes rare, and exotic effects in quantum antiferromagnets have historically provided a realm for their detection. Here we report an alternate route to realizing amplitude modes in magnetic materials by demonstrating that an antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional anisotropic triangular lattice ($α$-Na$_{0.9}$MnO$_2$) exhibits a long-lived, coherent oscillation of its staggered magnetization field. Our results show that geometric frustration of Heisenberg spins with uniaxial single-ion anisotropy can renormalize the interactions of a dense two-dimensional network of moments into largely decoupled, one-dimensional chains that manifest a longitudinally polarized bound state. This bound state is driven by the Ising-like anisotropy inherent to the Mn$^{3+}$ ions of this compound.

Coexistence of ferromagnetic and stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in YFe$_2$Ge$_2$

We report neutron scattering measurements of single-crystalline YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ in the normal state, which has the same crystal structure to the 122 family of iron pnictide superconductors. YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ does not exhibit long range magnetic order, but exhibits strong spin fluctuations. Like the iron pnictides, YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ displays anisotropic stripe-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at ($π$, $0$, $π$). More interesting, however, is the observation of strong spin fluctuations at the in-plane ferromagnetic wavevector ($0$, $0$, $π$). These ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are isotropic in the ($H$, $K$) plane, whose intensity exceeds that of stripe spin fluctuations. Both the ferromagnetic and stripe spin fluctuations remain gapless down to the lowest measured energies. Our results naturally explain the absence of magnetic order in YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ and also imply that the ferromagnetic correlations may be a key ingredient for iron-based materials.

Local Patch Encoding-Based Method for Single Image Super-Resolution

Recent learning-based super-resolution (SR) methods often focus on dictionary learning or network training. In this paper, we discuss in detail a new SR method based on local patch encoding (LPE) instead of traditional dictionary learning. The proposed method consists of a learning stage and a reconstructing stage. In the learning stage, image patches are classified into different classes by means of the proposed LPE, and then a projection matrix is computed for each class by utilizing a simple constraint. In the reconstructing stage, an input LR patch can be simply reconstructed by computing its LPE code and then multiplying the corresponding projection matrix. Furthermore, we discuss the relationship between the proposed method and the anchored neighborhood regression methods; we also analyze the extendibility of the proposed method. The experimental results on several image sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the LPE-based methods.

GUN: Gradual Upsampling Network for Single Image Super-Resolution

In this paper, an efficient super-resolution (SR) method based on deep convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed, namely Gradual Upsampling Network (GUN). Recent CNN based SR methods often preliminarily magnify the low resolution (LR) input to high resolution (HR) and then reconstruct the HR input, or directly reconstruct the LR input and then recover the HR result at the last layer. The proposed GUN utilizes a gradual process instead of these two commonly used frameworks. The GUN consists of an input layer, multiple upsampling and convolutional layers, and an output layer. By means of the gradual process, the proposed network can simplify the direct SR problem to multistep easier upsampling tasks with very small magnification factor in each step. Furthermore, a gradual training strategy is presented for the GUN. In the proposed training process, an initial network can be easily trained with edge-like samples, and then the weights are gradually tuned with more complex samples. The GUN can recover fine and vivid results, and is easy to be trained. The experimental results on several image sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed network.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge: Model Predictive Control With Conditional Integral Control Using A General Purpose Optimal Control Problem Solver - RIOTS

This paper presents a multi-variable Model Predictive Control (MPC) based controller for the one-staged refrigeration cycle model described in the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge. This model represents a two-input, two-output system with strong nonlinearities and high coupling between its variables. A general purpose optimal control problem (OCP) solver Matlab toolbox called RIOTS is used as the OCP solver for the proposed MPC scheme which allows for straightforward implementation of the method and for solving a wide range of constrained linear and nonlinear optimal control problems. A conditional integral (CI) compensator is embedded in the controller to compensate for the small steady state errors. This method shows significant improvements in performance compared to both discrete decentralized control (C1) and multi-variable PID controller (C2) originally given in PID2018 Benchmark Challenge as a baseline. Our solution is introduced in detail in this paper and our final results using the overall relative index, $J$, are 0.2 over C1 and 0.3 over C2, respectively. In other words, we achieved 80% improvement over C1 and 70% improvement over C2. We expect to achieve further improvements when some optimized searching efforts are used for MPC and CI parameter tuning.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge: Model-based Feedforward Compensator with A Conditional Integrator

Since proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers absolutely dominate the control engineering, numbers of different control structures and theories have been developed to enhance the efficiency of PID controllers. Thus, it is essential and inspiring to operate different PID control strategies to the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge. In this paper, a novel control strategy is designed for this refrigeration system, where a feedforward compensator and a conditional integrator are utilized to compensate the disturbances and remove the steady-state error in the benchmark problem, respectively. The simulation results given in the benchmark problem show the straightforward effectiveness of the proposed control structure compared with the existing control methods.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge: learning feedforward control

The design and application of learning feedforward controllers (LFFC) for the one-staged refrigeration cycle model described in the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge is presented, and its effectiveness is evaluated. The control system consists of two components: 1) a preset PID component and 2) a learning feedforward component which is a function approximator that is adapted on the basis of the feedback signal. A B-spline network based LFFC and a low-pass filter based LFFC are designed to track the desired outlet temperature of evaporator secondary flux and the superheating degree of refrigerant at evaporator outlet. Encouraging simulation results are included. Qualitative and quantitative comparison results evaluations show that, with little effort, a high-performance control system can be obtained with this approach. Our initial simple attempt of low-pass filter based LFFC and B-spline network based LFFC give J=0.4902 and J=0.6536 relative to the decentralized PID controller, respectively. Besides, the initial attempt of a combination controller of our optimized PI controller and low-pass filter LFFC gives J=0.6947 relative to the multi-variable PID controller.

Phrase Table as Recommendation Memory for Neural Machine Translation

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) has drawn much attention due to its promising translation performance recently. However, several studies indicate that NMT often generates fluent but unfaithful translations. In this paper, we propose a method to alleviate this problem by using a phrase table as recommendation memory. The main idea is to add bonus to words worthy of recommendation, so that NMT can make correct predictions. Specifically, we first derive a prefix tree to accommodate all the candidate target phrases by searching the phrase translation table according to the source sentence. Then, we construct a recommendation word set by matching between candidate target phrases and previously translated target words by NMT. After that, we determine the specific bonus value for each recommendable word by using the attention vector and phrase translation probability. Finally, we integrate this bonus value into NMT to improve the translation results. The extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods obtain remarkable improvements over the strong attentionbased NMT.

Quantum critical behavior in Ce(Fe$_{0.76}$Ru$_{0.24}$)$_2$Ge$_2$: the full story

Systems with embedded magnetic ions that exhibit a competition between magnetic order and disorder down to absolute zero can display unusual low temperature behaviors of the resistivity, susceptibility, and specific heat. Moreover, the dynamic response of such a system can display hyperscaling behavior in which the relaxation back to equilibrium when an amount of energy E is given to the system at temperature T only depends on the ratio E/T. Ce(Fe$_{0.755}$Ru$_{0.245}$)$_2$Ge$_2$ is a system that displays these behaviors. We show that these complex behaviors are rooted in a fragmentation of the magnetic lattice upon cooling caused by a distribution of local Kondo screening temperatures, and that the hyperscaling behavior can be attributed to the flipping of the total magnetic moment of magnetic clusters that spontaneously form and order upon cooling. We present our arguments based on the review of two-decades worth of neutron scattering and transport data on this system, augmented with new polarized neutron scattering experiments.

Coexistence of superconductivity and short-range double-stripe spin correlations in Te-vapor annealed FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ with $x\le0.2$

In as-grown bulk crystals of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ with $x\lesssim0.3$, excess Fe ($y>0$) is inevitable and correlates with a suppression of superconductivity. At the same time, there remains the question as to whether the character of the antiferromagnetic correlations associated with the enhanced anion height above the Fe planes in Te-rich samples is compatible with superconductivity. To test this, we have annealed as-grown crystals with $x=0.1$ and 0.2 in Te vapor, effectively reducing the excess Fe and inducing bulk superconductivity. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal low-energy magnetic excitations consistent with short-range correlations of the double-stripe type; nevertheless, cooling into the superconducting state results in a spin gap and a spin resonance, with the extra signal in the resonance being short-range with a mixed single-stripe/double-stripe character, which is different than other iron-based superconductors. The mixed magnetic character of these superconducting samples does not appear to be trivially explainable by inhomogeneity.

Spin-wave induced phonon resonance in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$

We report the direct observation of a "resonance" mode in the lowest-energy optic phonon very near the zone center around (111) in the multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ using neutron scattering methods. The phonon scattering intensity is enhanced when antiferromagnetic (AFM) order sets in at T$_N = 640$~K, and it increases on cooling. This "resonance" is confined to a very narrow region in energy-momentum space where no spin-wave excitation intensity is expected, and it can be modified by an external magnetic field. Our results suggest the existence of a novel coupling between the lattice and spin fluctuations in this multiferroic system in which the spin-wave excitations are mapped onto the lattice vibrations via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction.
