Variational dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model on the basis of multiple Davydov $\mathrm{D}_1$ states

Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model is investigated by employing a multitude of the Davydov D$_1$ trial states, also known as the multi-D$_1$ Ansatz. Accuracy in dynamics simulations is improved significantly over the single D$_1$ Ansatz, especially in the weak system-bath coupling regime. The reliability of the multi-D$_1$ Ansatz for various coupling strengths and initial conditions are also systematically examined, with results compared closely with those of the hierarchy equations of motion and the path integral Monte Carlo approaches. In addition, a coherent-incoherent phase crossover in the nonequilibrium dynamics is studied through the multi-D$_1$ Ansatz. The phase diagram is obtained with a critical point $s_{c}=0.4$. For $s_{c}<s<1$, the coherent-to-incoherent crossover occurs at a certain coupling strength, while the coherent state recurs at a much larger coupling strength. For $s<s_{c}$, only the coherent phase exists.

Superradiance at the localization-delocalization crossover in tubular chlorosomes

We study the effect of disorder on spectral properties of tubular chlorosomes in green sulfur bacteria Cf. aurantiacus. Employing a Frenkel-exciton Hamiltonian with diagonal and off-diagonal disorder consistent with spectral and structural studies, we analyze excitonic localization and spectral statistics of the chlorosomes. A size-dependent localization-delocalization crossover is found to occur as a function of the excitonic energy. The crossover energy region coincides with the more optically active states with maximized superradiance, and is, consequently, more conducive for energy transfer.

Effects of system-bath entanglement on the performance of light-harvesting systems: A quantum heat engine perspective

We explore energy transfer in a generic three-level system, which is coupled to three non-equilibrium baths. Built on the concept of quantum heat engine, our three-level model describes non-equilibrium quantum processes including light-harvesting energy transfer, nano-scale heat transfer, photo-induced isomerization, and photovoltaics in double quantum-dots. In the context of light-harvesting, the excitation energy is first pumped up by sunlight, then is transferred via two excited states which are coupled to a phonon bath, and finally decays to the ground state. The efficiency of this process is evaluated by steady state analysis via a polaron-transformed master equation; thus a wide range of the system-phonon coupling strength can be covered. We show that the coupling with the phonon bath not only modifies the steady state, resulting in population inversion, but also introduces a finite steady state coherence which optimizes the energy transfer flux and efficiency. In the strong coupling limit, the steady state coherence disappears and the efficiency approaches the heat engine limit given by Scovil and Schultz-Dubois in Phys. Rew. Lett. 2, 262 (1959).

Polaron dynamics with a multitude of Davydov D$_2$ trial states

We propose an extension to the Davydov D$_2$ Ansatz in the dynamics study of the Holstein molecular crystal model with diagonal and off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling using the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle. The new trial state by the name of the "multi-D$_2$ Ansatz" is a linear combination of Davydov D$_2$ trial states, and its validity is carefully examined by quantifying how faithfully it follows the Schrödinger equation. Considerable improvements in accuracy have been demonstrated in comparison with the usual Davydov trial states, i.e., the single D$_1$ and D$_2$ Ansätze. With an increase in the number of the Davydov D$_2$ trial states in the multi-D$_2$ Ansatz, deviation from the exact Schrödinger dynamics is gradually diminished, leading to a numerically exact solution to the Schrödinger equation.

Symmetry and the critical phase of the two-bath spin-boson model: Ground-state properties

A generalized trial wave function termed as the "multi-D1 Ansatz" has been developed to study the ground state of the spin-boson model with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal coupling in the sub-Ohmic regime. Ground-state properties including the energy and the spin polarization are investigated, and the results are consistent with those from the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group approaches for the cases involving two oscillators and two baths described by a continuous spectral density function. Breakdown of the rotational and parity symmetries along the continuous quantum phase transition separating the localized phase from the critical phase has been uncovered. Moreover, the phase boundary is determined accurately with the corresponding symmetry parameters of the rotational and parity symmetries. A critical value of the spectral exponent s* = 0.49(1) is predicted in the weak coupling limit, which is in agreement with the mean-field prediction of 1/2, but much smaller than the earlier literature estimate of 0.75(1).

An ansatz to the quantum phase transition in a dissipative two-qubit system

By means of a unitary transformation, we propose an ansatz to study quantum phase transitions in the ground state of a two-qubit system interacting with a dissipative reservoir. First, the ground state phase diagram is analyzed in the presence of the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic bath using an analytic ground state wave function which takes into account the competition between intrasite tunneling and intersite correlation. The quantum critical point is determined as the transition point from non-degenerate to degenerate ground state and our calculated critical coupling strength $α_c$ agrees with that from the numerical renormalization group method. Moreover, by computing the entanglement entropy between the qubits and the bath as well as the qubit-qubit correlation function in the ground state, we explore the nature of the quantum phase transition between the delocalized and localized states.

Neutron spin resonance as a probe of superconducting gap anisotropy in partially detwinned electron underdoped NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study the spin excitations in partially detwinned NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As which has coexisting static antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity ($T_c=15$ K, $T_N=30$ K). In previous INS work on a twinned sample, spin excitations form a dispersive sharp resonance near $E_{r1}=3.25$ meV and a broad dispersionless mode at $E_{r1}=6$ meV at the AF ordering wave vector ${\bf Q}_{\rm AF}={\bf Q}_1=(1,0)$ and its twinned domain ${\bf Q}_2=(0,1)$. For partially detwinned NaFe$_{0.985}$Co$_{0.015}$As with the static AF order mostly occurring at ${\bf Q}_{\rm AF}=(1,0)$, we still find a double resonance at both wave vectors with similar intensity. Since ${\bf Q}_1=(1,0)$ characterizes the explicit breaking of the spin rotational symmetry associated with the AF order, these results indicate that the double resonance cannot be due to the static and fluctuating AF orders, but originate from the superconducting gap anisotropy.

Spin Waves and Spatially Anisotropic Exchange Interactions in the $\mathrm{S=2}$ Stripe Antiferromagnet Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$

An inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin waves corresponding to the stripe antiferromagnetic order in insulating Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$ throughout the Brillouin zone is reported. The spin wave spectra are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with anisotropic in-plane exchange interactions. Integrating the ordered moment and the spin fluctuations results in a total moment squared of $27.6\pm4.2μ_B^2$/Fe, consistent with $\mathrm{S \approx 2}$. Unlike $X$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($X=$ Ca, Sr, and Ba), where the itinerant electrons have a significant contribution, our data suggest that this stripe antiferromagnetically ordered phase in Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$S$_2$ is a Mott-like insulator with fully localized $3d$ electrons and a high-spin ground state configuration. Nevertheless, the anisotropic exchange couplings appear to be universal in the stripe phase of Fe pnictides and chalcogenides.

Symmetry and Explicit Marking of the Critical Phase in Two-Bath Spin-Boson Model

The spin-boson model is a paradigm for studying decoherence, relaxation, entanglement and other effects that arise in a quantum system coupled to environmental degrees of freedom. At zero temperature, a localization-delocalization phase transition is known to exist in the sub-Ohmic regime, where the standard density matrix renormalization group algorithm is inadequate due to the divergence in the number of low-frequency modes. This limitation is circumvented in this work by symmetrically optimizing the phonon basis and introducing an order parameter accounting for the U(1) symmetry for a two-bath spin-boson model, by which we are able to determine the classification and criticality of the phase transition explicitly. Compared with variational results, the critical phase is characterized by spontaneous vanishing of boson displacements in both the baths, resulting in an accurate phase diagram with three model parameters.

Substitution of Ni for Fe in superconducting Fe$_{0.98}$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ depresses the normal-state conductivity but not the magnetic spectral weight

We have performed systematic resistivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Fe$_{0.98-z}$Ni$_z$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ samples to study the impact of Ni substitution on the transport properties and the low-energy ($\le$ 12 meV) magnetic excitations. It is found that, with increasing Ni doping, both the conductivity and superconductivity are gradually suppressed; in contrast, the low-energy magnetic spectral weight changes little. Comparing with the impact of Co and Cu substitution, we find that the effects on conductivity and superconductivity for the same degree of substitution grow systematically as the atomic number of the substituent deviates from that of Fe. The impact of the substituents as scattering centers appears to be greater than any contribution to carrier concentration. The fact that low-energy magnetic spectral weight is not reduced by increased electron scattering indicates that the existence of antiferromagnetic correlations does not depend on electronic states close to the Fermi energy.

Polaron-mediated spin correlations in metallic and insulating La$_{1-x}A_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ ($A$=Ca, Sr, or Ba)

Neutron spectroscopy measurements reveal short-range spin correlations near and above the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in manganite materials of the form La$_{1-x}A_{x}$MnO$_{3}$, including samples with an insulating ground state as well as colossal magnetoresistive samples with a metallic ground state. Quasielastic magnetic scattering is revealed that forms clear ridges running along the [100]-type directions in momentum space. A simple model consisting of a conduction electron hopping between spin polarized Mn ions that becomes self-trapped after a few hops captures the essential physics of this magnetic component of the scattering. We associate this scattering component with the magnetic part of diffuse polarons, as we observe a temperature dependence similar to that of the diffuse structural scattering arising from individual polarons.

Absence of collapse in quantum Rabi oscillations

We show analytically that the collapse and revival in the population dynamics of the atom-cavity coupled system under the rotating wave approximation (RWA), valid only at very weak coupling, is an artifact as the atom-cavity coupling is increased. Even the first-order correction to the RWA is able to bring about the absence of the collapse in the dynamics of atomic population inversion thanks to intrinsic oscillations resulting from the transitions between two levels with the same atomic quantum number. The removal of the collapse is valid for a wide range of coupling strengths which are accessible to current experimental setups. In addition, based on our analytical results that greatly improve upon the conventional RWA, even the strong-coupling power spectrum can now be explained with the help of the numerically exact energy levels.

An embryo of protocell membrane: The capsule of graphene oxide

Many signs indicate that the graphene could widely occur on the early Earth. Here, we report a new theory that graphene might be an embryo of protocell membrane, and found several evidences. Firstly, the graphene oxide and phospholipid-graphene oxide composite would curl into capsules in strongly acidic saturated solution of Pb(NO3)2 at low temperature, providing a protective space for biochemical reactions. Secondly, L-animi acids exhibit higher reactivity than D-animi acids for graphene oxides in favor of the formation of left-handed proteins. Thirdly, monolayer graphene with nanopores prepared by unfocused 84Kr25+ has high selectivity for permeation of the monovalent metal ions (Rb+ > K+ > Cs+ > Na+ > Li+), but does not allow Cl- through, which could be attributed to the ion exchange of oxygen-containing groups on the rim of nanopores. It is similar to K+ channels, which would cause efflux of some ions from capsule of graphene oxides with the decrease of pH in the primitive ocean, creating a suitable inner condition for the origin of life. Consequently, the strongly acidic, high salinity and strong radiation as well as temperature changes in the early Earth, regarded as negative factors, would be indispensable for the origin of protocell. In short, graphene bred life, but digested gradually by the evolution.

Ground state properties of sub-Ohmic spin-boson model with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal coupling

By employing the variational approach, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exact diagonalization as well as symmetry and mean-field analyses, the ground state properties of the two-bath spin boson model with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal coupling are systematically studied in the sub-Ohmic regime. A novel quantum phase transition from a doubly degenerate "localized phase" to the other doubly degenerate "delocalized phase" is uncovered. Via the multi-D1 ansatz as the variational wave function, transition points are determined accurately, consistent with the results from DMRG and exact diagonalization. An effective spatial dimension $d_{eff} = 2.37(6)$ is then estimated, which is found to be compatible with the mean-field prediction. Furthermore, the quantum phase transition is inferred to be of first order for the baths described by a continuous spectral density function. In the case of single mode, however, the transition is softened.

Quantifying non-Markovianity for a chromophore-qubit pair in a super-Ohmic bath

An approach based on a non-Markovian time-convolutionless polaron master equation is used to probe the quantum dynamics of a chromophore-qubit in a super-Ohmic bath. Utilizing a measure of non-Markovianity based on dynamical fixed points, we study the effects of the environment temperature and the coupling strength on the non-Markovian behavior of the chromophore in a super-Ohmic bath. It is found that an increase in the temperature results in a reduction in the backflow information from the environment to the chromophore, and therefore, a suppression of non-Markovianity. In the weak coupling regime, increasing coupling strength will enhance the non- Markovianity, while the effect is reversed in the strong coupling regime.

The suppression of Curie temperature by Sr doping in diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor (La1-xSrx)(Zn1-yMny)AsO

(La1-xSrx)(Zn1-yMny)AsO is a two dimensional diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor that has the advantage of decoupled charge and spin doping. The substitution of Sr2+ for La3+ and Mn2+ for Zn2+ into the parent semiconductor LaZnAsO introduces hole carriers and spins, respectively. This advantage enables us to investigate the influence of carrier doping on the ferromagnetic ordered state through the control of Sr concentrations in (La1-xSrx)(Zn0.9Mn0.1)AsO. 10 % Sr doping results in a ferromagnetic ordering below TC ~ 30 K. Increasing Sr concentration up to 30 % heavily suppresses the Curie temperature and saturation moments. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that no structural transition occurs for (La0.9Sr0.1)(Zn0.9Mn0.1)AsO below 300 K.

Solutions to the quantum Rabi model with two equivalent qubits

Using extended coherent states, an analytically exact study has been carried out for the quantum Rabi model with two equivalent qubits. Compact transcendental functions of one variable have been derived leading to exact solutions. The energy spectrum is clearly identified and analyzed. Also obtained analytically is the necessary and sufficient conditions for the occurrence of isolated exceptional solutions, which are not doubly degenerate as in the one-qubit quantum Rabi model.
