Towards a Better Understanding of Linear Models for Recommendation

Recently, linear regression models, such as EASE and SLIM, have shown to often produce rather competitive results against more sophisticated deep learning models. On the other side, the (weighted) matrix factorization approaches have been popular choices for recommendation in the past and widely adopted in the industry. In this work, we aim to theoretically understand the relationship between these two approaches, which are the cornerstones of model-based recommendations. Through the derivation and analysis of the closed-form solutions for two basic regression and matrix factorization approaches, we found these two approaches are indeed inherently related but also diverge in how they "scale-down" the singular values of the original user-item interaction matrix. This analysis also helps resolve the questions related to the regularization parameter range and model complexities. We further introduce a new learning algorithm in searching (hyper)parameters for the closed-form solution and utilize it to discover the nearby models of the existing solutions. The experimental results demonstrate that the basic models and their closed-form solutions are indeed quite competitive against the state-of-the-art models, thus, confirming the validity of studying the basic models. The effectiveness of exploring the nearby models are also experimentally validated.

Focus on Local: Detecting Lane Marker from Bottom Up via Key Point

Mainstream lane marker detection methods are implemented by predicting the overall structure and deriving parametric curves through post-processing. Complex lane line shapes require high-dimensional output of CNNs to model global structures, which further increases the demand for model capacity and training data. In contrast, the locality of a lane marker has finite geometric variations and spatial coverage. We propose a novel lane marker detection solution, FOLOLane, that focuses on modeling local patterns and achieving prediction of global structures in a bottom-up manner. Specifically, the CNN models lowcomplexity local patterns with two separate heads, the first one predicts the existence of key points, and the second refines the location of key points in the local range and correlates key points of the same lane line. The locality of the task is consistent with the limited FOV of the feature in CNN, which in turn leads to more stable training and better generalization. In addition, an efficiency-oriented decoding algorithm was proposed as well as a greedy one, which achieving 36% runtime gains at the cost of negligible performance degradation. Both of the two decoders integrated local information into the global geometry of lane markers. In the absence of a complex network architecture design, the proposed method greatly outperforms all existing methods on public datasets while achieving the best state-of-the-art results and real-time processing simultaneously.

Page Curve from Defect Extremal Surface and Island in Higher Dimensions

Defect extremal surface is defined by minimizing the Ryu-Takayanagi surface corrected by the defect theory, which is useful when the RT surface crosses or terminates on the defect. Based on the decomposition procedure of a AdS bulk with a defect brane, proposed in arXiv:2012.07612, we derive Page curve in a time dependent set up of AdS$_3$/BCFT$_2$, and find that the result from island formula agrees with defect extremal surface formula precisely. We then extend the study to higher dimensions and find that the entropy computed from bulk defect extremal surface is generally less than that from island formula in boundary low energy effective theory, which implies that the UV completion of island formula gives a smaller entropy in higher dimensions.

Infrastructure Assisted Constrained Connected Automated Vehicle Trajectory Optimization on Curved Roads: A Spatial Formulation on a Curvilinear Coordinate

Vehicle trajectory optimization is essential to ensure vehicles travel efficiently and safely. This paper presents an infrastructure assisted constrained connected automated vehicles (CAVs) trajectory optimization method on curved roads. This paper systematically formulates the problem based on a curvilinear coordinate which is flexible to model complex road geometries. Further, to deal with the spatial varying road obstacles, traffic regulations, and geometric characteristics, two-dimensional vehicle kinematics is given in a spatial formulation with exact road information provided by the infrastructure. Consequently, we applied a multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) approach to optimize the trajectories in a rolling horizon while satisfying the collision avoidances and vehicle kinematics constraints. To verify the efficiency of our method, a numerical simulation is conducted. As the results suggest, the proposed method can provide smooth vehicular trajectories, avoid road obstacles, and simultaneously follow traffic regulations, which is robust to road geometries and disturbances.

Cross-lingual Entity Alignment with Adversarial Kernel Embedding and Adversarial Knowledge Translation

Cross-lingual entity alignment, which aims to precisely connect the same entities in different monolingual knowledge bases (KBs) together, often suffers challenges from feature inconsistency to sequence context unawareness. This paper presents a dual adversarial learning framework for cross-lingual entity alignment, DAEA, with two original contributions. First, in order to address the structural and attribute feature inconsistency between entities in two knowledge graphs (KGs), an adversarial kernel embedding technique is proposed to extract graph-invariant information in an unsupervised manner, and project two KGs into the common embedding space. Second, in order to further improve successful rate of entity alignment, we propose to produce multiple random walks through each entity to be aligned and mask these entities in random walks. With the guidance of known aligned entities in the context of multiple random walks, an adversarial knowledge translation model is developed to fill and translate masked entities in pairwise random walks from two KGs. Extensive experiments performed on real-world datasets show that DAEA can well solve the feature inconsistency and sequence context unawareness issues and significantly outperforms thirteen state-of-the-art entity alignment methods.

Characterization of SOI pixel sensor using pinned depleted diode structure with AC-coupling on the diode

The experiment of the future electron-positron colliders has unprecedented requirements on the vertex resolution, such as around 3micron single point resolution for the inner most detector layer, with fast readout, and very low power-consumption density and material budget. Significant efforts have been put into the development of monolithic silicon pixel sensors, but there have been some challenges to combine all those stringent specifications in a small pixel area. This paper presents a compact prototype pixel sensor fabricated in LAPIS 200nm SOI process and focuses on the characterization of low capacitance of the sensing node with a pinned depleted diode structure adopting a novel method of forward bias voltage and AC coupling on the diode. Three PDD structures with 16 micron by 20 micron pixel size were designed and compared using radioactive sources and injected charge. The measured result shows that the designed PDD structure has very low leakage current and around 3.5fF of equivalent input capacitance.

CogNet: Bridging Linguistic Knowledge, World Knowledge and Commonsense Knowledge

In this paper, we present CogNet, a knowledge base (KB) dedicated to integrating three types of knowledge: (1) linguistic knowledge from FrameNet, which schematically describes situations, objects and events. (2) world knowledge from YAGO, Freebase, DBpedia and Wikidata, which provides explicit knowledge about specific instances. (3) commonsense knowledge from ConceptNet, which describes implicit general facts. To model these different types of knowledge consistently, we introduce a three-level unified frame-styled representation architecture. To integrate free-form commonsense knowledge with other structured knowledge, we propose a strategy that combines automated labeling and crowdsourced annotation. At present, CogNet integrates 1,000+ semantic frames from linguistic KBs, 20,000,000+ frame instances from world KBs, as well as 90,000+ commonsense assertions from commonsense KBs. All these data can be easily queried and explored on our online platform, and free to download in RDF format for utilization under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license. The demo and data are available at http://cognet.top/.

MakeItTalk: Speaker-Aware Talking-Head Animation

We present a method that generates expressive talking heads from a single facial image with audio as the only input. In contrast to previous approaches that attempt to learn direct mappings from audio to raw pixels or points for creating talking faces, our method first disentangles the content and speaker information in the input audio signal. The audio content robustly controls the motion of lips and nearby facial regions, while the speaker information determines the specifics of facial expressions and the rest of the talking head dynamics. Another key component of our method is the prediction of facial landmarks reflecting speaker-aware dynamics. Based on this intermediate representation, our method is able to synthesize photorealistic videos of entire talking heads with full range of motion and also animate artistic paintings, sketches, 2D cartoon characters, Japanese mangas, stylized caricatures in a single unified framework. We present extensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of our method, in addition to user studies, demonstrating generated talking heads of significantly higher quality compared to prior state-of-the-art.

Optimal Dynamic Futures Portfolios Under a Multiscale Central Tendency Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Model

We study the problem of dynamically trading multiple futures whose underlying asset price follows a multiscale central tendency Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (MCTOU) model. Under this model, we derive the closed-form no-arbitrage prices for the futures contracts. Applying a utility maximization approach, we solve for the optimal trading strategies under different portfolio configurations by examining the associated system of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations. The optimal strategies depend on not only the parameters of the underlying asset price process but also the risk premia embedded in the futures prices. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the investor's optimal positions and optimal wealth over time.

Exceptional surface-enhanced Rotation Sensing with Robustness in an optical microcavity

Exceptional points (EPs) are special singularities of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. At an EP, two or more eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates coalesce. Recently, EP-based optical gyroscope near an EP was extensively investigated to improve the response to rotation. However, the highly resultant dimensionality in the eigenstate space causing from the EP-based system is sensitivity to more external perturbations, that is, the great response at EPs requires strict implementation conditions. To solve this problem, a new non-Hermitian structure was proposed that realizes an exceptional surface (EP surface) constructed of numerous EPs embedded in a high-dimensional parameter space. With respect to the isolated EPs, non-Hermitian EP surface provides additional degrees of freedom to permit the undesired perturbations (such as fabrication errors) shifts along the EP surface which corresponds to the robustness. On the other hand, the rotation will force the system away from these EPs obtaining a sensitivity enhancement of three orders of magnitude, compared to the traditional Sagnac effect rotation detecting. The EP surface system has a potential to combine robustness with enhanced sensitivity of the rotation.

Defect extremal surface as the holographic counterpart of Island formula

We propose defect extremal surface as the holographic counterpart of boundary quantum extremal surface. The defect extremal surface is defined by minimizing the Ryu-Takayanagi surface corrected by the defect theory. This is particularly interesting when the RT surface crosses or terminates on the defect. In a simple set up of AdS/BCFT, we find that the defect extremal surface formula gives precisely the same results of the boundary quantum extremal surface. We provide a decomposition procedure of an AdS bulk with a defect brane to see clearly how Island formula emerges from a brane world system with gravity glued to a flat space quantum field theory.

Partially Connected Automated Vehicle Cooperative Control Strategy with a Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

This paper proposes a cooperative strategy of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) longitudinal control for partially connected and automated traffic environment based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm, which enhances the string stability of mixed traffic, car following efficiency, and energy efficiency. Since the sequences of mixed traffic are combinatory, to reduce the training dimension and alleviate communication burdens, we decomposed mixed traffic into multiple subsystems where each subsystem is comprised of human-driven vehicles (HDV) followed by cooperative CAVs. Based on that, a cooperative CAV control strategy is developed based on a deep reinforcement learning algorithm, enabling CAVs to learn the leading HDV's characteristics and make longitudinal control decisions cooperatively to improve the performance of each subsystem locally and consequently enhance performance for the whole mixed traffic flow. For training, a distributed proximal policy optimization is applied to ensure the training convergence of the proposed DRL. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulated experiments are conducted, which shows the performance of our proposed model has a great generalization capability of dampening oscillations, fulfilling the car following and energy-saving tasks efficiently under different penetration rates and various leading HDVs behaviors. Keywords: partially connected automated traffic environment, cooperative control, deep reinforcement learning, traffic oscillation dampening, energy efficiency

$K$-theoretic quasimap wall-crossing

In this paper, we prove a K-theoretic wall-crossing formula for $ε$-stable quasimaps for all GIT targets in all genera. It recovers the genus-0 K-theoretic toric mirror theorem by Givental-Tonita and the genus-0 mirror theorem for quantum K-theory with level structure by Ruan-Zhang. The proofs are based on K-theoretic virtual localization on the master space introduced by the second author in arXiv:1911.02745.

Technical Considerations when using Verasonics Research Ultrasound Platform for Developing a Photoacoustic Imaging System

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an emerging functional and molecular imaging technology that has attracted much attention in the past decade. Recently, many researchers have used the Vantage Verasonics research system for simultaneous ultrasound (US) and photoacoustic (PA) imaging. This was the motivation to write on the details of US/PA imaging system implementation and characterization using Verasonics platform. We describe the subtle details of US/PA imaging system setup, study the performance parameters of the system, and explain sequencing of the US/PA signal generation and signal amplification as well as the details required for efficient use of the hardware of the system and data processing protocols. We focused on linear-array based PAI due to its popularity and simple setup, as well as its high potential for clinical translatability. We have shown the sequencing of the US/PA signal generation, signal amplification, and related data processing protocols. A step-by-step guideline to develop and characterize PAI system using Vantage 128 has been presented. Some of the limitations of the vantage system are also listed. Photoacoustic imaging is a complement to the already established US imaging technique and may significantly increase its scope of application in diagnostic imaging and therapeutic monitoring. Combining with commercial medical US systems, the development of PAI can be accelerated by taking advantage of US image reconstruction and processing. With the information we presented in the body of this review and the four appendices, we described most of the experimental considerations one should know when working with the Vantage system for PAI tests.

Generation and Focusing of Orbital Angular Momentum Based on Polarized Reflectarray at Microwave Frequency

A novel polarized reflectarray is designed, fabricated, and experimentally characterized to show its flexibility and efficiency to control wave generation and focusing of orbital angular momentum (OAM) vortices with desirable OAM modes in the microwave frequency regime. In order to rigorously study the generation and focusing of OAM, a versatile analytical theory is proposed to theoretically study the compensation phase of reflectarray. Two prototypes of microwave reflectarrays are fabricated and experimentally characterized at 12 GHz, one for generation and one for focusing of OAM-carrying beams. Compared with the OAM-generating reflectarray, the reflectarray for focusing OAM vortex can significantly reduce the beam diameter, and this can further improve the transmission efficiency of the OAM vortex beams. We also show that the numerical and experimental results agree very well. The proposed design method and reflectarrays may spur the development of new efficient approaches to generate and focus OAM vortex waves for applications to microwave wireless communications.

Manifold Partition Discriminant Analysis

We propose a novel algorithm for supervised dimensionality reduction named Manifold Partition Discriminant Analysis (MPDA). It aims to find a linear embedding space where the within-class similarity is achieved along the direction that is consistent with the local variation of the data manifold, while nearby data belonging to different classes are well separated. By partitioning the data manifold into a number of linear subspaces and utilizing the first-order Taylor expansion, MPDA explicitly parameterizes the connections of tangent spaces and represents the data manifold in a piecewise manner. While graph Laplacian methods capture only the pairwise interaction between data points, our method capture both pairwise and higher order interactions (using regional consistency) between data points. This manifold representation can help to improve the measure of within-class similarity, which further leads to improved performance of dimensionality reduction. Experimental results on multiple real-world data sets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Neural Latent Dependency Model for Sequence Labeling

Sequence labeling is a fundamental problem in machine learning, natural language processing and many other fields. A classic approach to sequence labeling is linear chain conditional random fields (CRFs). When combined with neural network encoders, they achieve very good performance in many sequence labeling tasks. One limitation of linear chain CRFs is their inability to model long-range dependencies between labels. High order CRFs extend linear chain CRFs by modeling dependencies no longer than their order, but the computational complexity grows exponentially in the order. In this paper, we propose the Neural Latent Dependency Model (NLDM) that models dependencies of arbitrary length between labels with a latent tree structure. We develop an end-to-end training algorithm and a polynomial-time inference algorithm of our model. We evaluate our model on both synthetic and real datasets and show that our model outperforms strong baselines.

Cutoff $\rm AdS_3$ versus $\rm T\bar{T}$ $\rm CFT_2$ in the large central charge sector: correlators of energy-momentum tensor

In this article we probe the proposed holographic duality between $T\bar{T}$ deformed two dimensional conformal field theory and the gravity theory of $\rm AdS_3$ with a Dirichlet cutoff by computing correlators of energy-momentum tensor. We focus on the large central charge sector of the $T\bar{T}$ CFT in a Euclidean plane and in a sphere, and compute the correlators of energy-momentum tensor using an operator identity promoted from the classical trace relation. The result agrees with a computation of classical pure gravity in $\rm AdS_3$ with the corresponding cutoff surface, given a holographic dictionary which identifies gravity parameters with $T\bar{T}$ CFT parameters.
