Information-Based Model Discrimination for Digital Twin Behavioral Matching

Digital Twin is a breaking technology that allows creating virtual representations of complex physical systems based on updated information of the system and its physical laws. However, making the Digital Twin behavior matching with the real system can be challenging due to the number of unknown parameters in each twin. Its search can be done using optimization-based techniques, producing a family of models based on different system datasets, so, a discrimination criterion is required to determine the best Digital Twin model. This paper presents an information theory-based discrimination criterion to determine the best Digital Twin model resulting from a behavioral matching process. The information gain of a model is employed as a discrimination criterion. Box-Jenkins models are used to define the family of models for each behavioral matching result. The proposed method is compared with other information-based metrics as well as the $ν$gap metric. As a study case, the discrimination method is applied to the Digital Twin for a real-time vision feedback infrared temperature uniformity control system. Obtained results show that information-based methodologies are useful for selecting an accurate Digital Twin model representing the system among a family of plants

Digital Twin Enabled Smart Control Engineering as an Industrial AI: A New Framework and A Case Study

In the way towards Industry 4.0, the complexity of the industrial systems increases due to the presence of multiple agents, Cyber-Physical Systems, distributed sensing, and big data introducing unknown dynamics that affect the production goals of the manufacturing processes. Thus, Digital Twin is a breaking technology corresponding to the capacity of developing a virtual representation of any complex system in order to perform design, analysis, and behavior prediction tasks that enhance the understanding of these systems through new enabling capabilities like real-time analytics, parallel sensing, or Smart Control Engineering. In this paper, a novel framework is proposed for the design and implementation of Digital Twin applications to the development of Smart Control Engineering. The steps of this framework involve system documentation, multidomain simulation, behavioral matching, and real-time monitoring. This framework is applied to develop the Digital Twin for a real-time vision feedback infrared temperature uniformity control. The obtained results show that Digital Twin is a fundamental part of the transformation into Industry 4.0.

A fractional-order SEIHDR model for COVID-19 with inter-city networked coupling effects

In this paper, a mathematical model is proposed to analyze the dynamic behavior of COVID-19. Based on inter-city networked coupling effects, a fractional-order SEIHDR system with the real-data from 23 January to 18 March, 2020 of COVID-19 is discussed. Meanwhile, hospitalized individuals and the mortality rates of three types of individuals (exposed, infected and hospitalized) are firstly taken into account in the proposed model. And infectivity of individuals during incubation is also considered in this paper. By applying least squares method and predictor-correctors scheme, the numerical solutions of the proposed system in the absence of the inter-city network and with the inter-city network are stimulated by using the real-data from 23 January to $18-m$ March, 2020 where $m$ is equal to the number of prediction days. Compared with integer-order system ($α=0$), the fractional-order model without network is validated to have a better fitting of the data on Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Huanggang and other cities. In contrast to the case without network, the results indicate that the inter-city network system may be not a significant case to virus spreading for China because of the lock down and quarantine measures, however, it may have an impact on cities that have not adopted city closure. Meanwhile, the proposed model better fits the data from 24 February to 31, March in Italy, and the peak number of confirmed people is also predicted by this fraction-order model. Furthermore, the existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution under the initial condition are considered in the proposed system. Afterwards, the basic reproduction number $R_0$ is analyzed and it is found to hold a threshold: the disease-free equilibrium point is locally asymptotically stable when $R_0\le 1$, which provides a theoretical basis for whether COVID-19 will become a pandemic in the future.

Infinite series representation of fractional calculus: theory and applications

This paper focuses on the equivalent expression of fractional integrals/derivatives with an infinite series. A universal framework for fractional Taylor series is developed by expanding an analytic function at the initial instant or the current time. The framework takes into account of the Riemann-Liouville definition, the Caputo definition, the constant order and the variable order. On this basis, some properties of fractional calculus are confirmed conveniently. An intuitive numerical approximation scheme via truncation is proposed subsequently. Finally, several illustrative examples are presented to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the obtained results.

Some fundamental properties on the sampling free nabla Laplace transform

Discrete fractional order systems have attracted more and more attention in recent years. Nabla Laplace transform is an important tool to deal with the problem of nabla discrete fractional order systems, but there is still much room for its development. In this paper, 14 lemmas are listed to conclude the existing properties and 14 theorems are developed to describe the innovative features. On one hand, these properties make the N-transform more effective and efficient. On the other hand, they enrich the discrete fractional order system theory

Impulse Response Invariant Discretization of Complex Fractional Order Integrator

When the order of an integrator is a complex number, the integrator is called a complex fractional order integrator (CFOI). The impulse response invariant discretization (IRID) method is proposed to approximately discretize the CFOI. The definition of the CFOI is introduced firstly, and the real and imaginary parts of the CFOI in frequency-domain responses are derived. The code of IRID for the CFOI based on the MATLAB language is explained. The comparisons of the impulse responses and frequency-domain responses between the CFOI and the approximate discrete/continuous transfer functions are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed discretization method. This paper offers a reliable method to implement the CFOI.

Analytical calculation of the inverse nabla Laplace transform

The inversion of nabla Laplace transform, corresponding to a causal sequence, is considered. Two classical methods, i.e., residual calculation method and partial fraction method are developed to perform the inverse nabla Laplace transform. For the first method, two alternative formulae are proposed when adopting the poles inside or outside of the contour, respectively. For the second method, a table on the transform pairs of those popular functions is carefully established. Besides illustrating the effectiveness of the developed methods with two illustrative examples, the applicability are further discussed in the fractional order case.

Optimal Randomness in Swarm-Based Search

Lévy flights is a random walk where the step-lengths have a probability distribution that is heavy-tailed. It has been shown that Lévy flights can maximize the efficiency of resource searching in uncertain environments, and also movements of many foragers and wandering animals have been shown to follow a Lévy distribution. The reason mainly comes from that the Lévy distribution, has an infinite second moment, and hence is more likely to generate an offspring that is farther away from its parent. However, the investigation into the efficiency of other different heavy-tailed probability distributions in swarm-based searches is still insufficient up to now. For swarm-based search algorithms, randomness plays a significant role in both exploration and exploitation, or diversification and intensification. Therefore, it's necessary to discuss the optimal randomness in swarm-based search algorithms. In this study, CS is taken as a representative method of swarm-based optimization algorithms, and the results can be generalized to other swarm-based search algorithms. In this paper, four different types of commonly used heavy-tailed distributions, including Mittag-Leffler distribution, Pareto distribution, Cauchy distribution, and Weibull distribution, are considered to enhance the searching ability of CS. Then four novel CS algorithms are proposed and experiments are carried out on 20 benchmark functions to compare their searching performances. Finally, the proposed methods are used to system identification to demonstrate the effectiveness.

Fractional order [PI] Controller and Smith-like Predictor Design for A Class of High Order Systems

To handle the control difficulties caused by high-order dynamics, a control structure based on fractional order [proportional integral] (PI) controller and fractional order Smith-like predictor for a class of high order systems in the type of K/(Ts+1)n is proposed in this paper. The analysis of the tracking and disturbance rejection is illustrated based on the terminal value theorem and shows that the proposed control structure can ensure that the closed-loop system converges to the set point without static error and the closed-loop system recovers to its original state when the input disturbance occurs. Then, simulations about the influence on the control performance and control signal with different are carried out based on multi-objective genetic algorithm (MO-GA). The results show that the control performance can be improved and the energy of the control signal can be reduced simultaneously when the order is chosen no more than one. This can verify that the fractional order Smith-like predictor with has an advantage over that of the integral order Smith-like predictor.

Regional gradient controllability of ultra-slow diffusions involving the Hadamard-Caputo time fractional derivative

This paper investigates the regional gradient controllability for ultra-slow diffusion processes governed by the time fractional diffusion systems with a Hadamard-Caputo time fractional derivative. Some necessary and sufficient conditions on regional gradient exact and approximate controllability are first given and proved in detail. Secondly, we propose an approach on how to calculate the minimum number of $ω-$strategic actuators. Moreover, the existence, uniqueness and the concrete form of the optimal controller for the system under consideration are presented by employing the Hilbert Uniqueness Method (HUM) among all the admissible ones. Finally, we illustrate our results by an interesting example.

Comparison of control strategies for the temperature control of a refrigeration system based on vapor compression

This paper presents the design of multivariable temperature control for a refrigeration system based on vapor compression employing the internal model control technique. The refrigeration system is based on the PID18 benchmark, which is a $2\times 2$ MIMO system. The controlled output variables of the refrigeration system are the cooling power managed through the outlet temperature of the evaporator and the superheating degree at the condenser. The input variables of the system are the valve opening and the compressor speed. System identification is performed by applying stepped signals to the input variables, resulting in four transfer functions estimated with a Box-Jenkins model. From the MIMO system transfer functions, the relative gain array is calculated to determinate the best variables to be paired. After that, according to the variables to be paired, the corresponding transfer functions are reduced to order two to design a PID controller for each output variable employing the internal model control technique. Then, the controllers are contrasted employing a set of quantitative performance indexes with the control results achieved in the PID18 workshop. Obtained results show that the proposed Internal Model controllers have better performance than most of the proposed controllers at the PID18.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge: Model Predictive Control With Conditional Integral Control Using A General Purpose Optimal Control Problem Solver - RIOTS

This paper presents a multi-variable Model Predictive Control (MPC) based controller for the one-staged refrigeration cycle model described in the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge. This model represents a two-input, two-output system with strong nonlinearities and high coupling between its variables. A general purpose optimal control problem (OCP) solver Matlab toolbox called RIOTS is used as the OCP solver for the proposed MPC scheme which allows for straightforward implementation of the method and for solving a wide range of constrained linear and nonlinear optimal control problems. A conditional integral (CI) compensator is embedded in the controller to compensate for the small steady state errors. This method shows significant improvements in performance compared to both discrete decentralized control (C1) and multi-variable PID controller (C2) originally given in PID2018 Benchmark Challenge as a baseline. Our solution is introduced in detail in this paper and our final results using the overall relative index, $J$, are 0.2 over C1 and 0.3 over C2, respectively. In other words, we achieved 80% improvement over C1 and 70% improvement over C2. We expect to achieve further improvements when some optimized searching efforts are used for MPC and CI parameter tuning.

On optimal tempered Lévy flight foraging

Optimal random foraging strategy has gained increasing concentrations. It is shown that Lévy flight is more efficient compared with the Brownian motion when the targets are sparse. However, standard Lévy flight generally cannot be followed in practice. In this paper, we assume that each flight of the forager is possibly interrupted by some uncertain factors, such as obstacles on the flight direction, natural enemies in the vision distance, and restrictions in the energy storage for each flight, and introduce the tempered Lévy distribution $p(l)\sim {\rm e}^{-ρl}l^{-μ}$. It is validated by both theoretical analyses and simulation results that a higher searching efficiency can be derived when a smaller $ρ$ or $μ$ is chosen. Moreover, by taking the flight time as the waiting time, the master equation of the random searching procedure can be obtained. Interestingly, we build two different types of master equations: one is the standard diffusion equation and the other one is the tempered fractional diffusion equation.

PID2018 Benchmark Challenge: learning feedforward control

The design and application of learning feedforward controllers (LFFC) for the one-staged refrigeration cycle model described in the PID2018 Benchmark Challenge is presented, and its effectiveness is evaluated. The control system consists of two components: 1) a preset PID component and 2) a learning feedforward component which is a function approximator that is adapted on the basis of the feedback signal. A B-spline network based LFFC and a low-pass filter based LFFC are designed to track the desired outlet temperature of evaporator secondary flux and the superheating degree of refrigerant at evaporator outlet. Encouraging simulation results are included. Qualitative and quantitative comparison results evaluations show that, with little effort, a high-performance control system can be obtained with this approach. Our initial simple attempt of low-pass filter based LFFC and B-spline network based LFFC give J=0.4902 and J=0.6536 relative to the decentralized PID controller, respectively. Besides, the initial attempt of a combination controller of our optimized PI controller and low-pass filter LFFC gives J=0.6947 relative to the multi-variable PID controller.

LoopSmart: Smart Visual SLAM Through Surface Loop Closure

We present a visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework of closing surface loops. It combines both sparse feature matching and dense surface alignment. Sparse feature matching is used for visual odometry and globally camera pose fine-tuning when dense loops are detected, while dense surface alignment is the way of closing large loops and solving surface mismatching problem. To achieve smart dense surface loop closure, a highly efficient CUDA-based global point cloud registration method and a map content dependent loop verification method are proposed. We run extensive experiments on different datasets, our method outperforms state-of-the-art ones in terms of both camera trajectory and surface reconstruction accuracy.

Single image super-resolution using self-optimizing mask via fractional-order gradient interpolation and reconstruction

Image super-resolution using self-optimizing mask via fractional-order gradient interpolation and reconstruction aims to recover detailed information from low-resolution images and reconstruct them into high-resolution images. Due to the limited amount of data and information retrieved from low-resolution images, it is difficult to restore clear, artifact-free images, while still preserving enough structure of the image such as the texture. This paper presents a new single image super-resolution method which is based on adaptive fractional-order gradient interpolation and reconstruction. The interpolated image gradient via optimal fractional-order gradient is first constructed according to the image similarity and afterwards the minimum energy function is employed to reconstruct the final high-resolution image. Fractional-order gradient based interpolation methods provide an additional degree of freedom which helps optimize the implementation quality due to the fact that an extra free parameter $α$-order is being used. The proposed method is able to produce a rich texture detail while still being able to maintain structural similarity even under large zoom conditions. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than current single image super-resolution techniques.
