Born-Qualified: An Autonomous Framework for Deploying Advanced Energy and Electronic Materials

Autonomous science is transforming how we discover materials and chemical systems for advanced energy technologies. However, many initially promising systems never reach deployment. This "valley of death" stems from optimization that prioritizes laboratory metrics over industrial viability. We propose a new strategy: "born-qualified" autonomous development, which embeds manufacturability, cost, and durability constraints from the outset. This approach is enabled by four pillars, including the development of multi-objective metrics, causal models, a modular infrastructure, and embedding manufacturing in the discovery loop. Realizing this vision will require sustained, community-wide commitment, but the potential return on that investment is commensurate with the scale of the challenge.

Efficient Generation and Quality Screening of Visible Windows for Regional SAR Reconnaissance

Regional synthetic aperture radar reconnaissance requires observation windows that satisfy geometric feasibility under side-looking constraints and deliver interpretable image quality. This paper develops an efficient framework for visible window generation and per-window signal-level quality assessment. Window construction proceeds through three stages: coarse angular bandpass screening eliminates orbit arcs without potential target intersection, a planar characteristic curve containment test on the sensor calculation plane determines the precise geometry feasible intervals, and one-dimensional boundary bisection resolves each entry and exit epoch to subsecond precision. Each geometry feasible window then undergoes a companion point target stripmap simulation that measures range and azimuth impulse response width, peak sidelobe ratio, and integrated sidelobe ratio against mission-dependent acceptance thresholds. Numerical experiments validate the three-stage generation pipeline against an independent STK reference and demonstrate that the quality screening procedure differentiates imaging performance across observation windows with measurably different geometry. The framework provides an auditable preprocessing stage that converts continuous time regional visibility into quality-qualified observation windows suitable for subsequent mission planning.

An Analytic Solution to the Optimal Spherical Dubins Path Problem with Geodesic Curvature Constraints

Computing shortest paths for curvature-constrained Dubins vehicles on the unit sphere is fundamental to many engineering applications, including long-range flight planning, persistent surveillance patterns, and global routing problems where great circles are natural routes. Numerical optimization methods on $\SO(3)$ suffer from sensitivity to initialization, may converge to local minima, and often miss feasible solution branches. This paper proposes a unified analytic computational approach for spherical Dubins CGC and CCC paths that overcomes these limitations. By exploiting the axis-fixing property of rotations and developing a closed-form back-substitution method using geometric projection, the three-dimensional boundary value problem is reduced to solving a quadratic polynomial equation. The proposed analytic solver achieves machine precision accuracy with errors on the order of $10^{-16}$, is approximately $717$ times faster than numerical methods under the same computational environment, and systematically enumerates all feasible solution branches without requiring exhaustive multi-start initialization. The method provides closed-form solutions for optimal path computation in the regime where turning radius $\Rturn \in (0, 1/2]$, corresponding to $U_{\max} \geq \sqrt{3}$.

Missile guidance law design based on free-time convergent error dynamics

The design of guidance law can be considered a kind of finite-time error-tracking problem. A unified free-time convergent guidance law design approach based on the error dynamics and the free-time convergence method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the desired free-time convergent error dynamics approach is proposed, and its convergent time can be set freely, which is independent of the initial states and the guidance parameters. Then, the illustrative guidance laws considering the leading angle constraint, impact angle constraint, and impact time constraint are derived based on the proposed free-time convergent error dynamics respectively. The connection and distinction between the proposed and the existing guidance laws are analyzed theoretically. Finally, the performance of the proposed guidance laws is verified by simulation comparison.

Machine learning assisted phase and size-controlled synthesis of iron oxides

The controllable synthesis of iron oxides particles is a critical issue for materials science, energy storage, biomedical applications, environmental science, and earth science. However, synthesis of iron oxides with desired phase and size are still a time-consuming and trial-and-error process. This study presents solutions for two fundamental challenges in materials synthesis: predicting the outcome of a synthesis from specified reaction parameters and correlating sets of parameters to obtain products with desired outcomes. Four machine learning algorithms, including random forest, logistic regression, support vector machine, and k-nearest neighbor, were trained to predict the phase and particle size of iron oxide based on experimental conditions. Among the models, random forest exhibited the best performance, achieving 96% and 81% accuracy when predicting the phase and size of iron oxides in the test dataset. Premutation feature importance analysis shows that most models (except logistic regression) rely on known features such as precursor concentration, pH, and temperature to predict the phases from synthesis conditions. The robustness of the random forest models was further verified by comparing prediction and experimental results based on 24 randomly generated methods in additive and non-additive systems not included in the datasets. The predictions of product phase and particle size from the models are in good agreement with the experimental results. Additionally, a searching and ranking algorithm was developed to recommend potential synthesis parameters for obtaining iron oxide products with desired phase and particle size from previous studies in the dataset.

Observation of the superconducting proximity effect in the surface state of SmB6 thin films

The proximity effect at the interface between a topological insulator (TI) and a superconductor is predicted to give rise to chiral topological superconductivity and Majorana fermion excitations. In most TIs studied to date, however, the conducting bulk states have overwhelmed the transport properties and precluded the investigation of the interplay of the topological surface state and Cooper pairs. Here, we demonstrate the superconducting proximity effect in the surface state of SmB6 thin films which display bulk insulation at low temperatures. The Fermi velocity in the surface state deduced from the proximity effect is found to be as large as 10^5 m/s, in good agreement with the value obtained from a separate transport measurement. We show that high transparency between the TI and a superconductor is crucial for the proximity effect. The finding here opens the door to investigation of exotic quantum phenomena using all-thin-film multilayers with high-transparency interfaces.
