Chaos and Shadowing Around a Homoclinic Tube

Let $F$ be a $C^3$ diffeomorphism on a Banach space $B$. $F$ has a homoclinic tube asymptotic to an invariant manifold. Around the homoclinic tube, Bernoulli shift dynamics of submanifolds is established through shadowing lemma. This work removes an uncheckable condition of Silnikov [Equation (11), page 625 of L. P. Silnikov, Soviet Math. Dokl., vol.9, no.3, (1968), 624-628]. Also, the result of Silnikov does not imply Bernoulli shift dynamics of a single map, rather only provides a labeling of all invariant tubes around the homoclinic tube. The work of Silnikov was done in ${\mathbb R}^n$, and the current work is done in a Banach space.

Homoclinic Tubes in Discrete Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation Under Hamiltonian Perturbations

In this paper, we study the discrete cubic nonlinear Schroedinger lattice under Hamiltonian perturbations. First we develop a complete isospectral theory relevant to the hyperbolic structures of the lattice without perturbations. In particular, Backlund-Darboux transformations are utilized to generate heteroclinic orbits and Melnikov vectors. Then we give coordinate-expressions for persistent invariant manifolds and Fenichel fibers for the perturbed lattice. Finally based upon the above machinery, existence of codimension 2 transversal homoclinic tubes is established through a Melnikov type calculation and an implicit function argument. We also discuss symbolic dynamics of invariant tubes each of which consists of a doubly infinite sequence of curve segments when the lattice is four dimensional. Structures inside the asymptotic manifolds of the transversal homoclinic tubes are studied, special orbits, in particular homoclinic orbits and heteroclinic orbits when the lattice is four dimensional, are studied.

Chaos in PDEs and Lax Pairs of Euler Equations

Recently, the author and collaborators have developed a systematic program for proving the existence of homoclinic orbits in partial differential equations. Two typical forms of homoclinic orbits thus obtained are: (1). transversal homoclinic orbits, (2). Silnikov homoclinic orbits. Around the transversal homoclinic orbits in infinite dimensional autonomous systems, the author was able to prove the existence of chaos through a shadowing lemma. Around the Silnikov homoclinic orbits, the author was able to prove the existence of chaos through a horseshoe construction. Very recently, there has been a breakthrough by the author in finding Lax pairs for Euler equations of incompressible inviscid fluids. Further results have been obtained by the author and collaborators.

On 2D Euler Equations: III. A Line Model

The spectral theorem of the linear 2D Euler operator in Sobolev spaces is presented as a corollary of the spectral theorem in $\ell_2$ space in [Li,00]. Study on the (dashed) line model introduced in [Li,01] is continued. Specifically, invariant manifolds for the line model is established. The corresponding line model for 2D Navier-Stokes equation is also introduced.

Existence of Chaos for a Singularly Perturbed NLS Equation

The work [Li,99] is generalized to the singularly perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation of which the regularly perturbed NLS studied in [Li,99] is a mollification. Specifically, the existence of Smale horseshoes and Bernoulli shift dynamics is established in a neighborhood of a symmetric pair of Silnikov homoclinic orbits under certain generic conditions, and the existence of the symmetric pair of Silnikov homoclinic orbits has been proved in [Li,01]. The main difficulty in the current horseshoe construction is introduced by the singular perturbation $\e \pa_x^2$ which turns the unperturbed reversible system into an irreversible system. It turns out that the equivariant smooth linearization can still be achieved, and the Conley-Moser conditions can still be realized.

Melnikov Analysis for Singularly Perturbed DSII Equation

Rigorous Melnikov analysis is accomplished for Davey-Stewartson II equation under singular perturbation. Unstable fiber theorem and center-stable manifold theorem are established. The fact that the unperturbed homoclinic orbit, obtained via a Darboux transformation, is a classical solution, leads to the conclusion that only local well-posedness is necessary for a Melnikov measurement.

Chaos in Partial Differential Equations

This is a survey on Chaos in Partial Differential Equations. First we classify soliton equations into three categories: 1. (1+1)-dimensional soliton equations, 2. soliton lattices, 3. (1+n)-dimensional soliton equations (n greater than 1). A systematic program has been established by the author and collaborators, for proving the existence of chaos in soliton equations under perturbations. For each category, we pick a representative to present the results. Then we review some initial results on 2D Euler equation.

Chaos and Shadowing Lemma for Autonomous Systems of Infinite Dimensions

For finite-dimensional maps and periodic systems, Palmer rigorously proved Smale horseshoe theorem using shadowing lemma in 1988. For infinite-dimensional maps and periodic systems, such a proof was completed by Steinlein and Walther in 1990, and Henry in 1994. For finite-dimensional autonomous systems, such a proof was accomplished by Palmer in 1996. For infinite-dimensional autonomous systems, the current article offers such a proof. First we prove an Inclination Lemma to set up a coordinate system around a pseudo-orbit. Then we utilize graph transform and the concept of persistence of invariant manifold, to prove the existence of a shadowing orbit.

Persistent Homoclinic Orbits for Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation Under Singular Perturbation

Existence of homoclinic orbits in the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation under singular perturbations is proved. Emphasis is placed upon the regularity of the semigroup $e^{\e t \pa_x^2}$ at $\e = 0$. This article is a substantial generalization of \cite{LMSW96}, and motivated by the effort of Dr. Zeng \cite{Zen00a} \cite{Zen00b}. The mistake of Zeng in \cite{Zen00b} is corrected with a normal form transform approach. Both one and two unstable modes cases are investigated.

On 2D Euler Equations: Part I. On the Energy-Casimir Stabilities and The Spectra for Linearized 2D Euler Equations

In this paper, we study a linearized two-dimensional Euler equation. This equation decouples into infinitely many invariant subsystems. Each invariant subsystem is shown to be a linear Hamiltonian system of infinite dimensions. Another important invariant besides the Hamiltonian for each invariant subsystem is found, and is utilized to prove an ``unstable disk theorem'' through a simple Energy-Casimir argument. The eigenvalues of the linear Hamiltonian system are of four types: real pairs ($c,-c$), purely imaginary pairs ($id,-id$), quadruples ($\pm c\pm id$), and zero eigenvalues. The eigenvalues are computed through continued fractions. The spectral equation for each invariant subsystem is a Poincaré-type difference equation, i.e. it can be represented as the spectral equation of an infinite matrix operator, and the infinite matrix operator is a sum of a constant-coefficient infinite matrix operator and a compact infinite matrix operator. We have obtained a complete spectral theory.

On 2D Euler Equations: Part II. Lax Pairs and Homoclinic Structures

In Part I of our study on 2D Euler equation, we established the spectral theorem for a linearized 2D Euler equation. We also computed the point spectrum through continued fractions, and identified the eigenvalues with nonzero real parts. In this Part II of our study, first we discuss the Lax pairs for both 2D and 3D Euler equations. The existence of Lax pairs suggests that the hyperbolic foliations of 2D and 3D Euler equations may be degenerate, i.e., there exist homoclinic structures. Then we investigate the question on the degeneracy v.s. nondegeneracy of the hyperbolic foliations for Galerkin truncations of 2D Euler equation. In particular, for a Galerkin truncation, we have computed the explicit representation of the hyperbolic foliation which is of the degenerate case, i.e., figure-eight case. We also study the robustness of this degeneracy for a so-called dashed-line model through higher order Melnikov functions. The first order and second order Melnikov functions are all identically zero, which indicates that the degeneracy is relatively robust. The study in this paper serves a clue in searching for homoclinic structures for 2D Euler equation. The recent breakthrough result of mine on the existence of a Lax pair for 2D Euler equation, strongly supports the possible existence of homoclinic structures for 2D Euler equation.
