Stability of Inflow Problem for Hyperbolic Systems

Inflow BC plays a critical role in the study of hyperbolic PDE in a bounded domain. We establish $W^{1,\infty}$ stability for 1D hyperbolic conservation laws with inflow data in a bounded interval, and $W^{2,3+}$ stability of a large class of shear flows for the 3D incompressible Euler system with inflow BC in finite square or circular pipes.

How GenAI Mentor Configurations Shape Early Collaborative Dynamics: A Classroom Comparison of Individual and Shared Agents

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly embedded in computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), yet little empirical research has unpacked how different configurations of AI participation reshape collaborative processes. This study investigates how GenAI configuration shapes collaborative regulation in authentic classroom settings. Two eighth-grade classes engaged in small-group creative problem-solving under two conditions: a shared-AI configuration, in which each group interacted with a single AI mentor, and an individual-AI configuration, in which each student accessed a personal AI instance. Using multi-layer discourse coding combined with lag sequential analysis (LSA) and ordered network analysis (ONA), we examined interaction distribution, AI-student coupling, shared regulation processes, and teacher orchestration. Results reveal distinct regulatory dynamics across configurations. Shared AI access promoted convergence-oriented collaboration, with stronger alignment of shared regulatory states and more coordinated group-level reasoning. In contrast, individual AI access distributed support across learners, producing more exploratory and evaluative cycles but also more fragmented interaction patterns, accompanied by increased teacher intervention to manage divergence. These findings suggest that AI configuration functions as a structural design variable that reorganizes the regulatory ecology of classroom collaboration.

BrickSmart: Leveraging Generative AI to Support Children's Spatial Language Learning in Family Block Play

Block-building activities are crucial for developing children's spatial reasoning and mathematical skills, yet parents often lack the expertise to guide these activities effectively. BrickSmart, a pioneering system, addresses this gap by providing spatial language guidance through a structured three-step process: Discovery & Design, Build & Learn, and Explore & Expand. This system uniquely supports parents in 1) generating personalized block-building instructions, 2) guiding parents to teach spatial language during building and interactive play, and 3) tracking children's learning progress, altogether enhancing children's engagement and cognitive development. In a comparative study involving 12 parent-child pairs children aged 6-8 years) for both experimental and control groups, BrickSmart demonstrated improvements in supportiveness, efficiency, and innovation, with a significant increase in children's use of spatial vocabularies during block play, thereby offering an effective framework for fostering spatial language skills in children.

Global Well-posedness of Compressible Viscous Surface Waves without Surface Tension

We consider the free boundary problem for a layer of compressible viscous barotropic fluid lying above a fixed rigid bottom and below the atmosphere of positive constant pressure. The fluid dynamics is governed by the compressible Navier--Stokes equations with gravity, and the effect of surface tension is neglected on the upper free boundary. We prove the global well-posedness of the reformulated problem in flattening coordinates near the equilibrium in both two and three dimensions without any low frequency assumption of the initial data. The key ingredients here are the new control of the {\it Eulerian spatial derivatives} of the solution, which benefits a crucial nonlinear cancellation of the highest order spatial regularity of the free boundary, and the time weighted energy estimates.

Well-posedness and Low Mach Number Limit of the Free Boundary Problem for the Euler--Fourier System

We consider the free boundary problem for the Euler--Fourier system that describes the motion of compressible, inviscid and heat-conducting fluids. The effect of surface tension is neglected and there is no heat flux across the free boundary. We prove the local well-posedness of the problem in Lagrangian coordinates under the Taylor sign condition. The solution is produced as the limit of solutions to a sequence of tangentially-smoothed approximate problems, where the so-called corrector is crucially introduced beforehand in the temperature equation so that the approximate initial data satisfying the corresponding compatibility conditions can be constructed. To overcome the strong coupling effect between the Euler part and the Fourier part in solving the linearized approximate problem, the temperature equation is further regularized by a pseudo-parabolic equation. Moreover, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Mach number of the solutions to the free-boundary Euler--Fourier system with large temperature variations, which allow us to justify the convergence towards the free-boundary inviscid low Mach number limit system by the strong compactness argument.

Existence of Multi-dimensional Contact Discontinuities for the Ideal Compressible Magnetohydrodynamics

We establish the local existence and uniqueness of multi-dimensional contact discontinuities for the ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in Sobolev spaces, which are most typical interfacial waves for astrophysical plasmas and prototypical fundamental waves for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. Such waves are characteristic discontinuities for which there is no flow across the discontinuity surface while the magnetic field crosses transversely, which lead to a two-phase free boundary problem where the pressure, velocity and magnetic field are continuous across the interface whereas the entropy and density may have jumps. To overcome the difficulties of possible nonlinear Rayleigh--Taylor instability and loss of derivatives, here we use crucially the Lagrangian formulation and Cauchy's celebrated integral (1815) for the magnetic field. These motivate us to define two special good unknowns; one enables us to capture the boundary regularizing effect of the transversal magnetic field on the flow map, and the other one allows us to get around the troublesome boundary integrals due to the transversality of the magnetic field. In particular, our result removes the additional assumption of the Rayleigh--Taylor sign condition required by Morando, Trakhinin and Trebeschi (\emph{J. Differential Equations} \textbf{258} (2015), no. 7, 2531--2571; \emph{Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal.} \textbf{228} (2018), no. 2, 697--742) and holds for both 2D and 3D and hence gives a complete answer to the two open questions raised therein. Moreover, there is {\it no loss of derivatives} in our well-posedness theory. The solution is constructed as {\it the inviscid limit} of solutions to some suitably-chosen nonlinear approximate problems for the two-phase compressible viscous non-resistive MHD.

Incompressible inviscid resistive MHD surface waves in 2D

We consider the dynamics of a layer of an incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic field in a two-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary is in contact with the atmosphere, and the lower boundary is a rigid flat bottom. We prove the global well-posedness of the inviscid and resistive problem with surface tension around a non-horizontal uniform magnetic field; moreover, the solution decays to the equilibrium almost exponentially. One of the key observations here is an induced damping structure for the fluid vorticity due to the resistivity and transversal magnetic field.

Global Well-posedness of Free Interface Problems for the incompressible Inviscid Resistive MHD

We consider the plasma-vacuum interface problem in a horizontally periodic slab impressed by a uniform non-horizontal magnetic field. The lower plasma region is governed by the incompressible inviscid and resistive MHD, the upper vacuum region is governed by the pre-Maxwell equations, and the effect of surface tension is taken into account on the free interface. The global well-posedness of the problem, supplemented with physical boundary conditions, around the equilibrium is established, and the solution is shown to decay to the equilibrium almost exponentially. Our results reveal the strong stabilizing effect of the magnetic field as the global well-posedness of the free-boundary incompressible Euler equations, without the irrotational assumption, around the equilibrium is unknown. One of the key observations here is an induced damping structure for the fluid vorticity due to the resistivity and transversal magnetic field. A similar global well-posedness for the plasma-plasma interface problem is obtained, where the vacuum is replaced by another plasma.

Vanishing viscosity and surface tension limits of incompressible viscous surface waves

Consider the dynamics of a layer of viscous incompressible fluid under the influence of gravity. The upper boundary is a free boundary with the effect of surface tension taken into account, and the lower boundary is a fixed boundary on which the Navier-slip condition is imposed. It is proved that there is a uniform time interval on which the estimates independent of both viscosity and surface tension coefficients of the solution can be established. This then allows one to justify the vanishing viscosity and surface tension limits by the strong compactness argument. In the presence of surface tension, the main difficulty lies in the less regularity of the highest temporal derivative of the mean curvature of the free surface and the pressure. It seems hard to overcome this difficulty by using the vorticity in viscous boundary layers. One of the key observations here is to find that there is a crucial cancelation between the mean curvature and the pressure by using the dynamic boundary condition.

Anisotropic decay and global well-posedness of viscous surface waves without surface tension

We consider a viscous incompressible fluid below the air and above a fixed bottom. The fluid dynamics is governed by the gravity-driven incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and the effect of surface tension is neglected on the free surface. The global well-posedness and long-time behavior of solutions near equilibrium have been intriguing questions since Beale (\emph{Comm. Pure Appl. Math.} 34 (1981), no. 3, 359--392). It had been thought that certain low frequency assumption of the initial data is needed to derive an integrable decay rate of the velocity so that the global solutions in $3D$ can be constructed, while the global well-posedness in $2D$ was left open. In this paper, by exploiting the anisotropic decay rates of the velocity, which are even not integrable, we prove the global well-posedness in both $2D$ and $3D$, without any low frequency assumption of the initial data. One of key observations here is a cancelation in nonlinear estimates of the viscous stress tensor term in the bulk by using Alinhac good unknowns, when estimating the energy evolution of the highest order horizontal spatial derivatives of the solution.

Global well-posedness of an initial-boundary value problem for viscous non-resistive MHD systems

This paper concerns the viscous and non-resistive MHD systems which govern the motion of electrically conducting fluids interacting with magnetic fields. We consider an initial-boundary value problem for both compressible and (nonhomogeneous and homogeneous) incompressible fluids in an infinite flat layer. We prove the global well-posedness of the systems around a uniform magnetic field which is vertical to the layer. Moreover, the solution converges to the steady state at an almost exponential rate as time goes to infinity. Our proof relies on a two-tier energy method for the reformulated systems in Lagrangian coordinates.

Sharp nonlinear stability criterion of viscous non-resistive MHD internal waves in 3D

We consider the dynamics of two layers of incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic field, which are confined within a 3D horizontally infinite slab and separated by a free internal interface. We assume that the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid so that the fluids are susceptible to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Yet, we show that the viscous and non-resistive problem around the equilibrium is nonlinearly stable provided that the strength of the vertical component of the steady magnetic field, $|\bar B_3|$, is greater than the critical value, $\mathcal{M}_c$, which we identify explicitly. We also prove that the problem is nonlinearly unstable if $|\bar B_3|<\mathcal{M}_c$. Our results indicate that the non-horizontal magnetic field has strong stabilizing effect on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability but the horizontal one does not have in 3D.

On the construction of solutions to the free-surface incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations

We consider a free boundary problem for the incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations that describes the motion of the plasma in vacuum. The magnetic field is tangent and the total pressure vanishes along the plasma-vacuum interface. Under the Taylor sign condition of the total pressure on the free surface, we prove the local well-posedness of the problem in Sobolev spaces.

Global classical solutions to partially dissipative hyperbolic systems violating the Kawashima condition

This paper considers the Cauchy problem for the quasilinear hyperbolic system of balance laws in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 2$. The system is partially dissipative in the sense that there is an eigen-family violating the Kawashima condition. By imposing certain supplementary degeneracy conditions with respect to the non-dissipative eigen-family, global unique smooth solutions near constant equilibria are constructed. The proof is based on the introduction of the partially normalized coordinates, a delicate structural analysis, a family of scaled energy estimates with minimum fractional derivative counts and a refined decay estimates of the dissipative components of the solution.

Decay estimates of solutions to the compressible Euler-Maxwell system in R3

We study the large time behavior of solutions near a constant equilibrium to the compressible Euler-Maxwell system in $\r3$. We first refine a global existence theorem by assuming that the $H^3$ norm of the initial data is small, but the higher order derivatives can be arbitrarily large. If the initial data belongs to $\Dot{H}^{-s}$ ($0\le s<3/2$) or $\dot{B}_{2,\infty}^{-s}$ ($0<s\le3/2$), by a regularity interpolation trick, we obtain the various decay rates of the solution and its higher order derivatives. As an immediate byproduct, the usual $L^p$--$L^2$ $(1\le p\le 2)$ type of the decay rates follow without requiring that the $L^p$ norm of initial data is small.

Stability of steady states of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with non-flat doping profile

We consider the stability of the steady state of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with the non-flat doping profile. We prove the global existence of classical solutions near the steady state for the large doping profile. For the small doping profile, we prove the time decay rates of the solution provided that the initial perturbation belongs to $L^p$ with $1\le p< 3/2$.

The compressible viscous surface-internal wave problem: local well-posedness

This paper concerns the dynamics of two layers of compressible, barotropic, viscous fluid lying atop one another. The lower fluid is bounded below by a rigid bottom, and the upper fluid is bounded above by a trivial fluid of constant pressure. This is a free boundary problem: the interfaces between the fluids and above the upper fluid are free to move. The fluids are acted on by gravity in the bulk, and at the free interfaces we consider both the case of surface tension and the case of no surface forces. We prove that the problem is locally well-posed. Our method relies on energy methods in Sobolev spaces for a collection of related linear and nonlinear problems.

The compressible viscous surface-internal wave problem: nonlinear Rayleigh-Taylor instability

We are concerned with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability when the upper fluid is heavier than the lower fluid along the equilibrium interface. When the surface tension at the free internal interface is below the critical value, we prove that the problem is nonlinear unstable.
