Generating the Fukaya categories of Hamiltonian G-manifolds

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group and $\mathbf{k}$ be a field of characteristic $p \geq 0$ such that $H^* (G)$ does not have $p$-torsion. We show that a free Lagrangian orbit of a Hamiltonian $G$-action on a compact, monotone, symplectic manifold $X$ split-generates an idempotent summand of the monotone Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X; \mathbf{k})$ if and only if it represents a non-zero object of that summand (slightly more general results are also provided). Our result is based on: an explicit understanding of the wrapped Fukaya category $\mathcal{W}(T^*G; \mathbf{k})$ through Koszul twisted complexes involving the zero-section and a cotangent fibre; and a functor $D^b \mathcal{W}(T^*G; \mathbf{k}) \to D^b\mathcal{F}(X^{-} \times X; \mathbf{k})$ canonically associated to the Hamiltonian $G$-action on $X$. We explore several examples which can be studied in a uniform manner including toric Fano varieties and certain Grassmannians.

Embedding all contact 3-manifolds in a fixed contact 5-manifold

In this note we observe that one can contact embed all contact 3-manifolds into a Stein fillable contact structure on the twisted $S^3$-bundle over $S^2$ and also into a unique overtwisted contact structure on $S^3\times S^2$. These results are proven using "spun embeddings" and Lefschetz fibrations.

Auslander orders over nodal stacky curves and partially wrapped Fukaya categories

It follows from the work of Burban and Drozd arXiv:0905.1231 that for nodal curves $C$, the derived category of modules over the Auslander order $\mathcal{A}_C$ provides a categorical (smooth and proper) resolution of the category of perfect complexes $\mathrm{Perf}(C)$. On the A-side, it follows from the work of Haiden-Katzarkov-Kontsevich arXiv:1409.8611 that for punctured surfaces $X$ with stops $Λ$ at their boundary, the partially wrapped Fukaya category $\mathcal{W}(X,Λ)$ provides a categorical (smooth and proper) resolution of the compact Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X)$. Inspired by this analogy, we establish an equivalence between the derived category of modules over the Auslander orders over certain nodal stacky curves and partially wrapped Fukaya categories associated to punctured surfaces of arbitrary genus equipped with stops at their boundary. As an application, we deduce equivalences between derived categories of coherent sheaves (resp. perfect complexes) on such nodal stacky curves and the wrapped (resp. compact) Fukaya categories of punctured surfaces of arbitrary genus.

Koszul duality patterns in Floer theory

We study symplectic invariants of the open symplectic manifolds $X_Γ$ obtained by plumbing cotangent bundles of 2-spheres according to a plumbing tree $Γ$. For any tree $Γ$, we calculate (DG-)algebra models of the Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X_Γ)$ of closed exact Lagrangians in $X_Γ$ and the wrapped Fukaya category $\mathcal{W}(X_Γ)$. When $Γ$ is a Dynkin tree of type $A_n$ or $D_n$ (and conjecturally also for $E_6,E_7,E_8$), we prove that these models for the Fukaya category $\mathcal{F}(X_Γ)$ and $\mathcal{W}(X_Γ)$ are related by (derived) Koszul duality. As an application, we give explicit computations of symplectic cohomology of $X_Γ$ for $Γ=A_n,D_n$, based on the Legendrian surgery formula of Bourgeois, Ekholm and Eliashberg.

A modular compactification of $\mathcal{M}_{1,n}$ from $A_\infty$-structures

We show that a certain moduli space of minimal $A_\infty$-structures coincides with the modular compactification $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(n-1)$ of $\mathcal{M}_{1,n}$ constructed by Smyth. In addition, we describe these moduli spaces and the universal curves over them by explicit equations, prove that they are normal and Gorenstein, show that their Picard groups have no torsion and that they have rational singularities if and only if $n\le 11$.

Geometric composition in quilted Floer theory

We prove that Floer cohomology of cyclic Lagrangian correspondences is invariant under transverse and embedded composition of Lagrangians under a general set of assumptions. In the Corrigendum, we introduce an additional assumption of monotonicity for cylinders which is needed to avoid bubbling at the Y-end.

Arithmetic mirror symmetry for genus 1 curves with $n$ marked points

We establish a $\mathbb{Z}[[t_1,\ldots, t_n]]$-linear derived equivalence between the relative Fukaya category of the 2-torus with $n$ distinct marked points and the derived category of perfect complexes on the $n$-Tate curve. Specialising to $t_1= \ldots =t_n=0$ gives a $\mathbb{Z}$-linear derived equivalence between the Fukaya category of the $n$-punctured torus and the derived category of perfect complexes on the standard (Néron) $n$-gon. We prove that this equivalence extends to a $\mathbb{Z}$-linear derived equivalence between the wrapped Fukaya category of the $n$-punctured torus and the derived category of coherent sheaves on the standard $n$-gon.

Floer cohomology of $\mathfrak{g}$-equivariant Lagrangian branes

Building on Seidel-Solomon's fundamental work, we define the notion of a $\mathfrak{g}$-equivariant Lagrangian brane in an exact symplectic manifold $M$ where $\mathfrak{g} \subset SH^1(M)$ is a sub-Lie algebra of the symplectic cohomology of $M$. When $M$ is a (symplectic) mirror to an (algebraic) homogeneous space $G/P$, homological mirror symmetry predicts that there is an embedding of $\mathfrak{g}$ in $SH^1(M)$. This allows us to study a mirror theory to classical constructions of Borel-Weil and Bott. We give explicit computations recovering all finite dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ as representations on the Floer cohomology of an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-equivariant Lagrangian brane and discuss generalizations to arbitrary finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebras.

Floer cohomology of the Chiang Lagrangian

We study holomorphic discs with boundary on a Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a Kaehler manifold admitting a Hamiltonian action of a group $K$ which has $L$ as an orbit. We prove various transversality and classification results for such discs which we then apply to the case of a particular Lagrangian in $\mathbf{CP}^3$ first noticed by Chiang. We prove that this Lagrangian has non-vanishing Floer cohomology if and only if the coefficient ring has characteristic 5, in which case it generates the split-closed derived Fukaya category as a triangulated category.

Heegaard Floer homology of broken fibrations over the circle

We extend Perutz's Lagrangian matching invariants to 3-manifolds which are not necessarily fibred using the technology of holomorphic quilts. We prove an isomorphism of these invariants with Ozsvath-Szabo's Heegaard Floer invariants for certain extremal spin^c structures. As applications, we give new calculations of Heegaard Floer homology of certain classes of 3-manifolds, and a characterization of Juhasz's sutured Floer homology.

Arithmetic mirror symmetry for the 2-torus

This paper explores a refinement of homological mirror symmetry which relates exact symplectic topology to arithmetic algebraic geometry. We establish a derived equivalence of the Fukaya category of the 2-torus, relative to a basepoint, with the category of perfect complexes of coherent sheaves on the Tate curve over the "formal disc" Spec Z[[q]]. It specializes to a derived equivalence, over Z, of the Fukaya category of the punctured torus with perfect complexes on the curve y^2+xy=x^3 over Spec Z, the central fibre of the Tate curve; and, over the "punctured disc" Spec Z((q)), to an integral refinement of the known statement of homological mirror symmetry for the 2-torus. We also prove that the wrapped Fukaya category of the punctured torus is derived-equivalent over Z to bounded complexes of coherent sheaves on the central fiber of the Tate curve.

The symplectic topology of some rational homology balls

We study the symplectic topology of some finite algebraic quotients of the An Milnor fibre which are diffeomorphic to the rational homology balls that appear in Fintushel and Stern's rational blowdown construction. We prove that these affine surfaces have no closed exact Lagrangian submanifolds by using the already available and deep understanding of the Fukaya category of the An Milnor fibre coming from homological mirror symmetry. On the other hand, we find Floer theoretically essential monotone Lagrangian tori, finitely covered by the monotone tori which we study in the An Milnor fibre. We conclude that these affine surfaces have non-vanishing symplectic cohomology.

Fukaya categories of the torus and Dehn surgery

This paper is a companion to the authors' forthcoming work extending Heegaard Floer theory from closed 3-manifolds to compact 3-manifolds with two boundary components via quilted Floer cohomology. We describe the first interesting case of this theory: the invariants of 3-manifolds bounding S^2 union T^2, regarded as modules over the Fukaya category of the punctured 2-torus. We extract a short proof of exactness of the Dehn surgery triangle in Heegaard Floer homology. We show that A-infinity structures on the graded algebra A formed by the cohomology of two basic objects in the Fukaya category of the punctured 2-torus are governed by just two parameters (m^6,m^8), extracted from the Hochschild cohomology of A. For the Fukaya category itself, m^6 is nonzero.

Milnor fillable contact structures are universally tight

We show that the canonical contact structure on the link of a normal complex singularity is universally tight. As a corollary we show the existence of closed, oriented, atoroidal 3-manifolds with infinite fundamental groups which carry universally tight contact structures that are not deformations of taut (or Reebless) foliations. This answers two questions of Etnyre.

Planar open books with four binding components

We study an explicit construction of planar open books with four binding components on any three-manifold which is given by integral surgery on three component pure braid closures. This construction is general, indeed any planar open book with four binding components is given this way. Using this construction and results on exceptional surgeries on hyperbolic links, we show that any contact structure of S^3 supports a planar open book with four binding components, determining the minimal number of binding components needed for planar open books supporting these contact structures. In addition, we study a class of monodromies of a planar open book with four binding components in detail. We characterize all the symplectically fillable contact structures in this class and we determine when the Ozsvath-Szabo contact invariant vanishes. As an application, we give an example of a right-veering diffeomorphism on the four-holed sphere which is not destabilizable and yet supports an overtwisted contact structure. This provides a counterexample to a conjecture of Honda, Kazez, Matic from arXiv:0609734 .

Wrinkled fibrations on near-symplectic manifolds

Motivated by the programmes initiated by Taubes and Perutz, we study the geometry of near-symplectic 4-manifolds, i.e., manifolds equipped with a closed 2-form which is symplectic outside a union of embedded 1-dimensional submanifolds, and broken Lefschetz fibrations on them. We present a set of four moves which allow us to pass from any given fibration to any other broken fibration which is deformation equivalent to it. Moreover, we study the change of the near-symplectic geometry under each of these moves. The arguments rely on the introduction of a more general class of maps, which we call wrinkled fibrations and which allow us to rely on classical singularity theory. Finally, we illustrate these constructions by showing how one can merge components of the zero-set of the near-symplectic form. We also disprove a conjecture of Gay and Kirby by showing that any achiral broken Lefschetz fibration can be turned into a broken Lefschetz fibration by applying a sequence of our moves.
