A Modified CSMA/CA Protocol for OFDM Underwater Networks: Cross Layer Design

The underwater acoustic channel continues to present significant challenges to efficient throughput performance of underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) in varying scenarios. As a result, cross-layer approaches that explore joint PHY/MAC strategies are worthy of further exploration. We consider a recent high-speed OFDM modem and propose a new cross-layer solution based on modified CSMA/CA, for a canonical star network topology with few nodes (the most common scenario in UASNs). Some innovations to an adaptive OFDM PHY link are developed to jointly select the modulation, convolutional coding and frequency diversity order (different transmission modes) for matching varying channel conditions. Additionally, receiver logic that disambiguates the cause of packet loss between a) that caused by channel vs. b) that due to collisions is used to modify the ARQ/backoff logic for retransmissions with CSMA/CA random access. Simulation results reveal that the cross-layer design can effectively increase network throughput.

OFDM demodulation using virtual time reversal processing in underwater acoustic communication

The extremely long underwater channel delay spread causes severe inter-symbol interference (ISI) for underwater acoustic communications. Passive time reversal processing (PTRP) can effectively reduce the channel time dispersion in a simple way via convolving the received packet with a time reversed probe signal. However the probe signal itself may introduce extra noise and interference (self-correlation of the probe signal). In this paper, we propose a virtual time reversal processing (VTRP) for single input single output (SISO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. It convolves the received packet with the reversed estimated channel, instead of the probe signal to reduce the interference. Two sparse channel estimation methods, matching pursuit (MP), and basis pursuit de-noising (BPDN), are adopted to estimate the channel impulse response (CIR). We compare the performance of VTRP with the PTRP and without any time reversal processing through MATLAB simulations and the pool experiments. The results reveal that VTRP has outstanding performance over time-invariant channels.

MAC Protocols Design for Smart Metering Network

The new generation of power metering system - i.e. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) - is expected to enable remote reading, control, demand response and other advanced functions, based on the integration of a new two-way communication network, which will be referred as Smart Metering Network (SMN). In this paper, we focus on the design principles of multiple access control (MAC) protocols for SMN. First, we list several AMI applications and its benefits to the current power grid and user experience. Next, we introduces several features of SMN relevant to the design choice of the MAC protocols, including the SMN architecture and candidate communication technologies. After that, we propose some performance evaluation metrics, such as scalability issue, traffic types, delay and etc, and give a survey of the associated research issues for the SMN MAC protocols design. In addition, we also note progress within the new IEEE standardization task group (IEEE 802.11ah TG) currently working to create SMN standards, especially in the MAC protocols aspect.
