Embedded Model Predictive Control for EMS-type Maglev Vehicles

Current developments of high-speed magnetic levitation technology using the principle of the electromagnet suspension (EMS) focus on reaching vehicle speeds of more than 600 km/h. With increasing vehicle speeds, however, updated control algorithms need to be investigated to reliably stabilize the system and meet the demands in terms of ride comfort. This article examines the modern and popular approach of model predictive control and its application to the magnetic levitation control system. Investigated key aspects are the parameterization of the model predictive controller and its implementation on embedded, resource constrained hardware. The results reveal that model predictive control is capable to robustly stabilize the highly nonlinear and constrained system even at very high speed. Furthermore, processor-in-the-loop studies are carried out to validate the designed control algorithms on a microcontroller.

Spin-Charge Separation, Anomalous Scaling and the Coherence of Hopping in exactly solved Two Chain Models

The coherence of transport between two one-dimensional interacting Fermi liquids, coupled by single particle hopping and interchain interaction, is examined in the context of two exactly soluble models. It is found that the coherence of the inter-chain hopping depends on the interplay between inter-chain hopping and inter-chain interaction terms, and not simply on the ground state spectral properties of an isolated chain. Specifically, the splitting of levels in associated with interchain hopping in a $g_4$ soluble model is found to be enhanced by the introduction of interchain interaction. It is also shown that, for an exactly solvable model with both $g_2$ and $g_4$ interactions, coherent interchain hopping coexists with anomalous scaling and non-Fermi liquid behavior in the chain direction.

Effect of conduction electron interactions on Anderson impurities

The effect of conduction electron interactions for an Anderson impurity is investigated in one dimension using a scaling approach. The flow diagrams are obtained by solving the renormalization group equations numerically. It is found that the Anderson impurity case is different from its counterpart -- the Kondo impurity case even in the local moment region. The Kondo temperature for an Anderson impurity shows nonmonotonous behavior, increasing for weak interactions but decreasing for strong interactions. The implication of the study to other related impurity models is also discussed.

Scaling Law for a Magnetic Impurity Model with Two-Body Hybridization

We consider a magnetic impurity coupled to the hybridizing and screening channels of a conduction band. The model is solved in the framework of poor man's scaling and Cardy's generalized theories. We point out that it is important to include a two-body hybridization if the scaling theory is to be valid for the band width larger than $U$. We map out the boundary of the Fermi-non-Fermi liquid phase transition as a function of the model parameters.
