Transient Chirp Dynamics in Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers

Laser frequency chirp is a ubiquitous dynamical process in semiconductor lasers, vital for frequency-modulated photonic systems. In the mid-infrared (MIR) and terahertz (THz) ranges, quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are ideal sources with high power, narrow linewidth and compact size. While chirp dynamics in MIR QCLs have been studied, the transient chirp behavior of THz QCLs--particularly the thermal chirp on microsecond to millisecond timescales--remains largely unexplored. Here, we experimentally investigate transient thermal chirp dynamics in single-mode THz QCLs via an on-chip heterodyne scheme. Twin monolithically integrated single-mode QCLs are used: one pulsed QCL as the device under test, and one continuous-wave (CW) QCL serving as both local oscillator (LO) and ultrafast THz detector. The frequency chirp is mapped to the radio-frequency (RF) domain by heterodyne down-conversion. By varying current and temperature, we observe three distinct chirp features: unidirectional down-chirp, V-shaped chirp, and unidirectional up-chirp. A two-node thermal model reproduces the dynamics with good agreement with experiments. Chirp dynamics in the multi-mode regime are also identified, showing the potential for sensitive dynamic spectral characterization. These findings deepen the understanding of THz QCL thermal chirp mechanisms and support applications in THz frequency combs, frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar, and high-speed coherent communications.

A Flow Model for the Electrified Railway-Power Grid Hybrid Asymmetric Coupled System and its Linearized Method

In mountainous regions where traction loads constitute a significant portion of a long-chain weak power grid (PG) with sustainable energy, the interaction between the traction power supply system and the PG becomes increasingly evident. The integrated power flow calculation (PFC) method and its linearized model are quite important for the PG - traction network (TN) joint planning. However, existing research on the port load characteristics of the EMUs and the connection angle characteristics of traction transformers is insufficient, and there is a lack of effective methods for PFC or linearized PFC in systems that couple the PG with the traction network. To fill this gap, this paper proposes an integrated PFC model for the AT TN - PG coupled system, along with a linearized method. Firstly, according to the relationship of the phases between the PG and the AT traction network, the node admittance matrix of the coupled system has been constructed. Then, the issue of power injection equations being unable to deal with the EMUs port load is resolved by merging the contact line node and the rail node. Subsequently, the integrated PFC equations for the coupling system are established. Next, a hybrid phase linear decoupled power flow model for the coupling system is developed, employing the correspondence between the phases of the PG and the TN, as well as the phase angle differences among various nodes and branches. Numerical simulations conducted in a specific region demonstrate the necessity of an integrated PFC for the coupled system and validate both the accuracy and efficiency of the linearized model.

Farey tree locking of terahertz semiconductor laser frequency combs

Frequency combs show various applications in molecular fingerprinting, imaging, communications, and so on. In the terahertz frequency range, semiconductor-based quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are ideal platforms for realizing the frequency comb operation. Although self-started frequency comb operation can be obtained in free-running terahertz QCLs due to the four-wave mixing locking effects, resonant/off-resonant microwave injection, phase locking, and femtosecond laser based locking techniques have been widely used to broaden and stabilize terahertz QCL combs. These active locking methods indeed show significant effects on the frequency stabilization of terahertz QCL combs, but they simultaneously have drawbacks, such as introducing large phase noise and requiring complex optical coupling and/or electrical circuits. Here, we demonstrate Farey tree locking of terahertz QCL frequency combs under microwave injection. The frequency competition between the Farey fraction frequency and the cavity round-trip frequency results in the frequency locking of terahertz QCL combs, and the Farey fraction frequencies can be accurately anticipated based on the downward trend of the Farey tree hierarchy. Furthermore, dual-comb experimental results show that the phase noise of the dual-comb spectral lines is significantly reduced by employing the Farey tree locking method. These results pave the way to deploying compact and low phase noise terahertz frequency comb sources.
