String probes, simple currents, and the no global symmetries conjecture

Center one-form symmetries in consistent quantum gravity theories are expected to be either broken or gauged, thereby determining the global form of the gauge group. We shed light on this expectation from the perspective of distinguished extended objects, which we denote by faithful string probes, for which the gauge symmetry is realized as a holomorphic current algebra. We argue that the worldsheet counterpart of gauged center one-form symmetries is the existence of chiral simple currents extending the current algebra. Accordingly, we show that the consistency condition for such extensions reproduce and generalize known field theoretic and geometric obstructions to the gauging of center one-form symmetries in six and eight dimensions. We verify this picture in a number of examples arising from heterotic string compactifications, and apply it to infer the gauge group topology of a recently identified class of six-dimensional models with no known F-theoretic realization. In 6d supergavity, our results also clarify an observation of Kim and Vafa on the existence of BPS particles required for consistency upon circle reduction: these particles arise from worldsheet simple currents whose existence is dictated by the presence of a gauged center one-form symmetry. Intriguingly, in several models across different dimensions we find composite higher-spin chiral currents beyond the current algebra, hinting at a stringy generalization of center one-form symmetries in the bulk.

Rational points in the 6d supergravity landscape and simple current extensions

We investigate a recently identified class of six-dimensional supergravities without tensor multiplets whose primitive BPS strings are described by a rational superconformal field theory. Rationality imposes severe constraints on the supersymmetric spectrum of their BPS strings and provides an effective way to study this class of models, despite the absence of a conventional geometric realization within F-theory. We find that, in each model, the rationality constraints are nontrivially satisfied and uniquely determine the elliptic genus of the strings, providing a new consistency criterion satisfied by this exotic class of candidate quantum gravity theories. In all cases, the left-moving Kac-Moody-Virasoro algebra on the string worldsheet is extended by higher-spin currents, corresponding to discrete symmetries of the 2d SCFT. This allows us to determine the global form of the six-dimensional gauge group for all the members of this class of models.

Shift orbifolds, decompactification limits, and lattices

We describe the general shift orbifold of a Narain CFT and use this to investigate decompactification limits in the heterotic Narain moduli space. We also comment on higher rank theories and describe some applications to the CFT based on the Leech lattice and its shift orbifolds.

Topology change and heterotic flux vacua

We investigate the interrelation between topology and Narain T-duality of heterotic flux vacua. We present evidence that all 5 and 4-dimensional Minkowski space heterotic flux backgrounds with 8 supercharges have a locus in the moduli space with a T-dual description in terms of a compactification on the product of a K3 surface with a circle or a torus. A test of this equivalence is provided by calculating the new supersymmetric index on both sides of the duality. We examine the implications of these dualities for CHL-like orbifolds that reduce the rank of the gauge group, as well as those that lead to minimal supersymmetry in 4 dimensions. We also discuss properties of flux vacua that preserve minimal supersymmetry in 4 dimensions that cannot be related to conventional compactifications by Narain T-duality. Along the way we point out a number of properties of these vacua, including the role played by non-trivial flat gerbes, the appearance of rational worldsheet CFTs in decompactification limits, and the role of attractive K3 surfaces in backgrounds with minimal supersymmetry. Finally, we discuss the dual pairs from the perspective of M-theory/heterotic duality.

Geometric flows and supersymmetry

We study the relation between supersymmetry and geometric flows driven by the Bianchi identity for the three-form flux $H$ in heterotic supergravity. We describe how the flow equations can be derived from a functional that appears in a rewriting of the bosonic action in terms of squares of supersymmetry operators. On a complex threefold, the resulting equations match what is known in the mathematics literature as "anomaly flow". We generalise this to seven- and eight-manifolds with G$_2$ or Spin(7) structures and discuss examples where the manifold is a torus fibration over a K3 surface. In the latter cases, the flow simplifies to a single scalar equation, with the existence of the supergravity solution implied by the long-time existence and convergence of the flow. We also comment on the $\alpha'$ expansion and highlight the importance of using the proper connection in the Bianchi identity to ensure that the flow's fixed points satisfy the supergravity equations of motion.

A Worldsheet Approach to $\mathbf{\mathcal{N}=1}$ Heterotic Flux Backgrounds

Heterotic backgrounds with torsion preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions can be obtained as orbifolds of principal $T^{2}$ bundles over $K3$. We consider a worldsheet description of these backgrounds as gauged linear sigma-models (GLSMs) with $(0,2)$ supersymmetry. Such a formulation provides a useful framework in order to address the resolution of singularities of the orbifold geometries. We investigate the constraints imposed by discrete symmetries on the corresponding torsional GLSMs. In particular, the principal $T^{2}$ connection over $K3$ is inherited from $(0,2)$ vector multiplets. As these vectors gauge global scaling symmetries of products of projective spaces, the corresponding $K3$ geometry is naturally realized as an algebraic hypersurface in such a product (or as a branched cover of it). We outline the general construction for describing such orbifolds. We give explicit constructions for automorphisms of order two and three.
