PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission): An Extended White Paper

PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in May 2013 as a large-class mission for investigating within the framework of the ESA Cosmic Vision program a set of important scientific questions that require high resolution, high sensitivity, full-sky observations of the sky emission at wavelengths ranging from millimeter-wave to the far-infrared. PRISM's main objective is to explore the distant universe, probing cosmic history from very early times until now as well as the structures, distribution of matter, and velocity flows throughout our Hubble volume. PRISM will survey the full sky in a large number of frequency bands in both intensity and polarization and will measure the absolute spectrum of sky emission more than three orders of magnitude better than COBE FIRAS. The aim of this Extended White Paper is to provide a more detailed overview of the highlights of the new science that will be made possible by PRISM

Cosmic Bose dark matter

Cold and hot dark matter (CDM, HDM) imprint distinctive effects on the cosmological observables, naturally, they are often thought to be made of different kinds of particles. However, we point out that CDM and HDM could share a common origin, a Bose-Einstein condensate emerging with two components. In this framework, the mass and temperature constraints on HDM contain fundamental information of CDM, but also, the critical temperature of condensation shall be larger than the HDM temperature. We discuss two scenarios: a gas made of bosons and a gas made of boson-antiboson pairs. We use some cosmological data surveys to test the idea and constrain the bosonic DM parameters, including a forecast for the Planck mission. We find that the bosonic DM picture is consistent with data in the first scenario, although, the second one might be increasingly interesting for future data surveys.

Beam mismatch effects in Cosmic Microwave Background polarization measurements

Measurement of cosmic microwave background polarization is today a major goal of observational cosmology. The level of the signal to measure, however, makes it very sensitive to various systematic effects. In the case of Planck, which measures polarization by combining data from various detectors, the beam asymmetry can induce a temperature leakage or a polarization mode mixing. In this paper, we investigate this effect using realistic simulated beams and propose a first-order method to correct the polarization power spectra for the induced systematic effect.

Microlensing of Unresolved Stars as a Brown Dwarf Detection Method

We describe a project of brown dwarf detection in the dark halo of a galaxy using the microlensing effect. We argue that monitoring pixels instead of stars could provide an enhancement in the number of detectable events. We estimate the detection efficiency with a Monte-Carlo simulation. We expect a ten-fold increase with respect to current experiments. To assess the feasibility of this method we have determined the photometric precision of a pixel by comparing several pictures of a same field in the LMC. To be published in the Proceeding of the workshop 'The dark side of the universe...', Roma, Juin 1993,

Detection of brown dwarfs by the micro-lensing of unresolved stars

The presence of brown dwarfs in the dark galactic halo could be detected through their gravitational lensing effect and experiments under way monitor about one million stars to observe a few lensing events per year. We show that if the photon flux from a galaxy is measured with a good precision, it is not necessary to resolve the stars and besides more events could be observed.
