Higher-spin self-dual gravity from holomorphic planes in twistor space

We prove a `nonlinear graviton theorem' for higher-spin self-dual gravity. We consider small deformations of the complex structure of the non-projective twistor space that are bounded in a specified region near the origin and investigate the space $M_{HS}$ of holomorphically embedded complex planes $\mathbb{C}^2$ that intersect the origin. We show that this space is an infinite dimensional complex manifold with a canonical projection onto a four-dimensional holomorphic self-dual spacetime $\mathcal{M}$, and discuss the geometry induced on this new higher-spin space. Solutions of higher-spin self-dual gravity are then obtained by choosing an embedding of spacetime $\mathcal{M}$ into higher-spin space $M_{HS}$, with higher-spin symmetries arising from the different choices of embedding. Integrability of the theory is manifested in the form of a Lax pair for the system that we present. We conjecture that chiral higher-spin gravity can similarly be realized by considering deformations that are unconstrained at the origin.

Infrared physics of QED and gravity from representation theory

The infrared structure of QED and gravity is known to be governed by an infinite-dimensional symmetry group which extends the Poincar\'e group to include, respectively, large $U(1)$ transformations and BMS supertranslations. We describe how the unitary irreducible representations (UIRs) of these asymptotic symmetry groups encode universal infrared features of a scattering process. Motivated by the goal of defining an infrared-finite $S$-matrix based on these UIRs, we also study supermomentum eigenstates and contrast our construction with the dressed-state approach for infrared-safe amplitudes.

A geometrical invitation to BMS group theory

In these lecture notes, a group-theoretical introduction to BMS symmetries is provided in a self-contained manner. More precisely, all definitions and structures are purely based on geometrical and group-theoretical notions defined at null infinity and valid in any dimension, in a way that circumvents its traditional bulk realisation as asymptotic symmetries. The topics which are reviewed are: the definition of BMS transformations as conformal Carrollian isometries of null infinity, the semidirect structure of the BMS group, the holographic reconstruction of Minkowski spacetime in terms of good cuts, the one-to-one correspondence between good cut subspaces and Poincar\'e subgroups (aka vacua), as well as a basic introduction to unitary representations of the BMS group.

BMS representations for generic supermomentum

We revisit the classification, and give explicit realisations, of unitary irreducible representations of the BMS group. As compared to McCarthy's seminal work, we make use of a unique, Lorentz-invariant, decomposition of supermomenta into a hard and a soft piece, that we introduce and properly define, to investigate the extent to which generic representations depart from usual Poincar\'e particles and highlight their relations to gravitational infrared physics. We insist on making wavefunctions as explicit as possible. Similarly, we explain how branching to a Poincar\'e subgroup works in practice: this is physically relevant because this amounts to reading off the field content of a given BMS state in terms of a choice of gravity vacuum. In particular, we emphasise how different gravity vacua differ in their interpretation of the same BMS state, here again providing concrete examples as well as the general procedure. Finally, we demonstrate on an example that generic BMS particles are flexible enough to encode memory, as opposed to usual Poincar\'e particles.

Ti and Spi, Carrollian extended boundaries at timelike and spatial infinity

The goal of this paper is to provide a definition for a notion of extended boundary at time and space-like infinity which, following Figueroa-O'Farril--Have--Prohazka--Salzer, we refer to as Ti and Spi. This definition applies to asymptotically flat spacetime in the sense of Ashtekar--Romano and we wish to demonstrate, by example, its pertinence in a number of situations. The definition is invariant, is constructed solely from the asymptotic data of the metric and is such that automorphisms of the extended boundaries are canonically identified with asymptotic symmetries. Furthermore, scattering data for massive fields are realised as functions on Ti and a geometric identification of cuts of Ti with points of Minkowksi then produces an integral formula of Kirchhoff type. Finally, Ti and Spi are both naturally equipped with (strong) Carrollian geometries which, under mild assumptions, enable to reduce the symmetry group down to the BMS group, or to Poincar\'e in the flat case. In particular, Strominger's matching conditions are naturally realised by restricting to Carrollian geometries compatible with a discrete symmetry of Spi.

BMS particles

We construct wavefunctions for unitary irreducible representations (UIRs) of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group, i.e. BMS particles, and show that they describe quantum superpositions of (Poincar\'e) particles propagating on inequivalent gravity vacua. This follows from reconsidering McCarthy's classification of BMS group UIRs through a unique, Lorentz-invariant but non-linear, decomposition of supermomenta into hard and soft pieces.

Higher-Spin Self-Dual Yang-Mills and Gravity from the twistor space

We lift the recently proposed theories of higher-spin self-dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) and gravity (SDGR) to the twistor space. We find that the most natural room for the twistor formulation of these theories is not in the projective, but in the full twistor space, which is the total space of the spinor bundle over the 4-dimensional manifold. In the case of higher-spin extension of the SDYM we prove an analogue of the Ward theorem, and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the solutions of the field equations and holomorphic vector bundles over the twistor space. In the case of the higher-spin extension of SDGR we show show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between solutions of the field equations and Ehresmann connections on the twistor space whose horizontal distributions are Poisson, and whose curvature is decomposable. These data then define an almost complex structure on the twistor space that is integrable.

Projective and Carrollian geometry at time/space-like infinity on projectively compact Ricci flat Einstein manifolds

In this article we discuss how to construct canonical \emph{strong} Carrollian geometries at time/space like infinity of projectively compact Ricci flat Einstein manifolds $(M,g)$ and discuss the links between the underlying projective structure of the metric $g$. The obtained Carrollian geometries are determined by the data of the projective compactification. The key idea to achieve this is to consider a new type of Cartan geometry based on a non-effective homogeneous model for projective geometry. We prove that this structure is a general feature of projectively compact Ricci flat Einstein manifolds.

Carrollian $Lw_{1+\infty}$ representation from twistor space

We construct an explicit realization of the action of the $Lw_{1+\infty}$ loop algebra on fields at null infinity. This action is directly derived by Penrose transform of the geometrical action of $Lw_{1+\infty}$ symmetries in twistor space, ensuring that it forms a representation of the algebra. Finally, we show that this action coincides with the canonical action of $Lw_{1+\infty}$ Noether charges on the asymptotic phase space.

Asymptotic symmetries of projectively compact order one Einstein manifolds

We show that the boundary of a projectively compact Einstein manifold of dimension $n$ can be extended by a line bundle naturally constructed from the projective compactification. This extended boundary is such that its automorphisms can be identified with asymptotic symmetries of the compactification. The construction is motivated by the investigation of a new curved orbit decomposition for a $n+1$ dimensional manifold which we prove results in a line bundle over a projectively compact order one Einstein manifolds.

Conformal boundaries of Minkowski superspace and their super cuts

In this article we carry out a detailed investigation of the geometric nature of the points at infinity of Minkowski superspace. It turns out that there are several sets of points forming the superconformal boundary of Minkowski superspace: on top of a well-behaved super $\mathscr{I}$, we find other sets that we exhibit and study. We also study the intersection of these boundaries with super null cones and explicitly construct the corresponding space of super cuts.

Bridging Carrollian and Celestial Holography

Gravity in $4d$ asymptotically flat spacetime constitutes the archetypal example of a gravitational system with leaky boundary conditions. Pursuing our analysis of [1], we argue that the holographic description of such a system requires the coupling of the dual theory living at null infinity to some external sources encoding the radiation reaching the conformal boundary and responsible for the non-conservation of the charges. In particular, we show that the sourced Ward identities of a conformal Carrollian field theory living at null infinity reproduce the BMS flux-balance laws. We also derive the general form of low-point correlation functions for conformal Carrollian field theories and exhibit a new branch of solutions, which is argued to be the relevant one for holographic purposes. We then relate our Carrollian approach to the celestial holography proposal by mapping the Carrollian Ward identities to those constraining celestial operators through a suitable integral transform.

Carrollian manifolds and null infinity: A view from Cartan geometry

We discuss three different (conformally) Carrollian geometries and their relation to null infinity from the unifying perspective of Cartan geometry. Null infinity \emph{per se} comes with numerous redundancies in its intrinsic geometry and the two other Carrollian geometries can be recovered by making successive choices of gauge. This clarifies the extent to which one can think of null infinity as being a (strongly) Carrollian geometry and we investigate the implications for the corresponding Cartan geometries. The perspective taken, which is that characteristic data for gravity at null infinity are equivalent to a Cartan geometry for the Poincaré group, gives a precise geometrical content to the fundamental fact that ``gravitational radiation is the obstruction to having the Poincaré group as asymptotic symmetries''.

Carrollian Perspective on Celestial Holography

We show that a $3d$ sourced conformal Carrollian field theory has the right kinematic properties to holographically describe gravity in $4d$ asymptotically flat spacetime. The external sources encode the leaks of gravitational radiation at null infinity. The Ward identities of this theory are shown to reproduce those of the $2d$ celestial CFT after relating Carrollian to celestial operators. This suggests a new set of interplays between gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime, sourced conformal Carrollian field theory and celestial CFT.

Tractor geometry of asymptotically flat spacetimes

In a recent work it was shown that conformal Carroll geometries are canonically equipped with a null-tractor bundle generalizing the tractor bundle of conformal geometry. We here show that in the case of the conformal boundary of an asymptotically flat spacetime of any dimension d>=3, this null-tractor bundle over null infinity can be canonically derived from the interior spacetime geometry. As was previously discussed, compatible normal connections on the null-tractor bundle are not unique: We prove that they are in fact in one-to-one correspondence with the germ of the asymptotically flat spacetimes to leading order. In dimension d=3 the tractor connection invariantly encodes a choice of mass and angular momentum aspect, in dimension d>=4 a choice of asymptotic shear. In dimension d=4 the presence of tractor curvature correspond to gravitational radiation. Even thought these results are by construction geometrical and coordinate invariant, we give explicit expressions in BMS coordinates for concreteness.

Einstein gravity as a gauge theory for the conformal group

General Relativity in dimension $n = p + q$ can be formulated as a gauge theory for the conformal group $SO(p+1,q+1)$, along with an additional field reducing the structure group down to the Poincaré group $ISO(p,q)$. In this paper, we propose a new variational principle for Einstein geometry which realizes this fact. Importantly, as opposed to previous treatments in the literature, our action functional gives first order field equations and does not require supplementary constraints on gauge fields, such as torsion-freeness. Our approach is based on the "first order formulation" of conformal tractor geometry. Accordingly, it provides a straightforward variational derivation of the tractor version of the Einstein equation. To achieve this, we review the standard theory of tractor geometry with a gauge theory perspective, defining the tractor bundle a priori in terms of an abstract principal bundle and providing an identification with the standard conformal tractor bundle via a dynamical soldering form. This can also be seen as a generalization of the so called Cartan-Palatini formulation of General Relativity in which the "internal" orthogonal group $SO(p,q)$ is extended to an appropriate parabolic subgroup $P\subset SO(p+1,q+1)$ of the conformal group.

An ambient approach to conformal geodesics

Conformal geodesics are distinguished curves on a conformal manifold, loosely analogous to geodesics of Riemannian geometry. One definition of them is as solutions to a third order differential equation determined by the conformal structure. There is an alternative description via the tractor calculus. In this article we give a third description using ideas from holography. A conformal $n$-manifold $X$ can be seen (formally at least) as the asymptotic boundary of a Poincaré--Einstein $(n+1)$-manifold $M$. We show that any curve $γ$ in $X$ has a uniquely determined extension to a surface $Σ_γ$ in $M$, which which we call the \emph{ambient surface of $γ$}. This surface meets the boundary $X$ in right angles along $γ$ and is singled out by the requirement that it it be a critical point of renormalised area. The conformal geometry of $γ$ is encoded in the Riemannian geometry of $Σ_γ$. In particular, $γ$ is a conformal geodesic precisely when $Σ_γ$ is asymptotically totally geodesic, i.e. its second fundamental form vanishes to one order higher than expected. We also relate this construction to tractors and the ambient metric construction of Fefferman and Graham. In the $(n+2)$-dimensional ambient manifold, the ambient surface is a graph over the bundle of scales. The tractor calculus then identifies with the usual tensor calculus along this surface. This gives an alternative compact proof of our holographic characterisation of conformal geodesics.

Asymptotic Shear and the Intrinsic Conformal Geometry of Null-Infinity

In this article we propose a new geometrization of the radiative phase space of asymptotically flat space-times: we show that the geometry induced on null-infinity by the presence of gravitational waves can be understood to be a generalisation of the tractor calculus of conformal manifolds adapted to the case of degenerate conformal metrics. It follows that the whole formalism is, by construction, manifestly conformally invariant. We first show that a choice of asymptotic shear amounts to a choice of linear differential operator of order two on the bundle of scales of null-infinity. We refer to these operators as Poincaré operators. We then show that Poincaré operators are in one-to-one correspondence with a particular class of tractor connections which we call "null-normal" (they generalise the normal tractor connection of conformal geometry). The tractor curvature encodes the presence of gravitational waves and the non-uniqueness of flat null-normal tractor connections correspond to the "degeneracy of gravity vacua" that has been extensively discussed in the literature. This work thus brings back the investigation of the radiative phase space of gravity to the study of (Cartan) connections and associated bundles. This should allow, in particular, to proliferate invariants of the phase space.
