Measuring Omega_0 with higher-order Quasar-Galaxy Correlations induced by Weak Lensing

Via the magnification bias, gravitational lensing by large-scale structures causes angular cross-correlations between distant quasars and foreground galaxies on angular scales of arc minutes and above. We investigate the three-point cross-correlation between quasars and galaxy pairs measurable via the second moment of the galaxy counts around quasars and show that it reaches the level of a few per cent on angular scales near one arc minute. Combining two- and three-point correlations, a skewness parameter can be defined which is shown to be virtually independent on the shape and normalisation of the dark-matter power spectrum. If the galaxy bias is linear and deterministic, the skewness depends on the cosmic matter density parameter Omega_0 only; otherwise, it can be used to probe the linearity and stochasticity of the bias. We finally estimate the signal-to-noise ratio of a skewness determination and find that around twenty thousand distant quasars e.g. from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey should suffice for a direct measurement of Omega_0.

Analysis of two-point statistics of cosmic shear: I. Estimators and covariances

We derive in this paper expressions for the covariance matrix of the cosmic shear two-point correlation functions which are readily applied to any survey geometry. Furthermore, we consider the more special case of a simple survey geometry which allows us to obtain approximations for the covariance matrix in terms of integrals which are readily evaluated numerically. These results are then used to study the covariance of the aperture mass dispersion which has been employed earlier in quantitative cosmic shear analyses. We show that the aperture mass dispersion, measured at two different angular scales, quickly decorrelates with the ratio of the scales. Inverting the relation between the shear two-point correlation functions and the power spectrum of the underlying projected matter distribution, we construct estimators for the power spectrum and for the band powers, and show that they yields accurate approximations; in particular, the correlation between band powers at different wave numbers is quite weak. The covariance matrix of the shear correlation function is then used to investigate the expected accuracy of cosmological parameter estimates from cosmic shear surveys. Depending on the use of prior information, e.g. from CMB measurements, cosmic shear can yield very accurate determinations of several cosmological parameters, in particular the normalization $σ_8$ of the power spectrum of the matter distribution, the matter density parameter $Ω_{\rm m}$, and the shape parameter $Γ$.

Weak lensing study of galaxy biasing

We combine weak lensing measurements from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey and the VIRMOS-DESCART survey, and present the first direct measurements of the bias parameter b and the galaxy-mass cross-correlation coefficient r on scales ranging from 0.2 to 9.3 h_{50}^{-1} Mpc at a lens redshift z~0.35. We find strong evidence that both b and r change with scale for our sample of lens galaxies (19.5<R_C<21), which have luminosities around L_*. For the currently favored cosmology (Ω_m=0.3,Ω_Λ=0.7), we find b=0.71^+0.06_-0.04 on a scale of 1-2 Mpc, increasing to ~1 on larger scales. The value of r has only minimal dependence on the assumed cosmology. The variation of r with scale is very similar to that of b, and reaches a minimum value of r=0.57^+0.08_-0.07 (at 1 Mpc). This suggests significant stochastic biasing and/or non-linear biasing. On scales larger than ~4 Mpc the value of r is consistent with a value of 1. In addition we use RCS data alone to measure the ratio b/r on scale ranging from 0.15 to 12.5 Mpc, and find that the ratio varies somewhat with scale. We obtain an average value of b/r=1.090+-0.035, in good agreement with previous estimates. A (future) careful comparison of our results with models of galaxy formation can provide unique constraints, as r is linked intimately to the details of galaxy formation.

Gravity and Non-gravity Modes in the VIRMOS-DESCART Weak Lensing Survey

We analyze the weak lensing data of the VIRMOS imaging survey using projections (called E and B-modes) of the two independents observed correlation functions. The E-mode contains all the lensing signal, while noise and systematics contribute equally to the E and B modes provided that intrinsic alignment is negligible. The mode separation allows a measurement of the signal with a \sqrt{2} smaller error bars, and a separate channel to test for systematic errors. We apply various transformations, including a spherical harmonic space power spectrum C^E_l and C^B_l, which provides a direct measurement of the projected dark matter distribution for 500<l<10^4.

Source-lens clustering effects on the skewness of the lensing convergence

The correlation between source galaxies and lensing potentials causes a systematic effect on measurements of cosmic shear statistics, known as the source-lens clustering (SLC) effect. The SLC effect on the skewness of lensing convergence, $S_3$, is examined using a nonlinear semi-analytic approach and is checked against numerical simulations. The semi-analytic calculations have been performed in a wide variety of generic models for the redshift distribution of source galaxies and power-law models for the bias parameter between the galaxy and dark matter distributions. The semi-analytic predictions are tested successfully against numerical simulations. We find the relative amplitude of the SLC effect on $S_3$ to be of the order of five to forty per cent. It depends significantly on the redshift distribution of sources and on the way the bias parameter evolves. We discuss possible measurement strategies to minimize the SLC effects.

Numerical study of statistical properties of the lensing excursion angles

We present ray tracing simulations combined with sets of large N-body simulations. Experiments were performed to explore, for the first time, statistical properties of fluctuations in angular separations of nearby light ray pairs (the so-called lensing excursion angle) induced by weak lensing by large-scale structures. We found that the probability distribution function (PDF) of the lensing excursion angles is not simply Gaussian but has an exponential tail. It is, however, found that the tail, or more generally non-Gaussian nature in the PDF has no significant impact on the weak lensing of the CMB. Moreover, we found that the variance in the lensing excursion angles predicted by the power spectrum approach is in good agreement with our numerical results. These results demonstrate a validity of using the power spectrum approach to compute lensing effects on the CMB.

A wide-field spectroscopic survey of the cluster of galaxies Cl0024+1654: I. The catalogue

We present the catalogue of a wide-field CFHT/WHT spectroscopic survey of the lensing cluster Cl0024+1654 at z=0.395. This catalogue contains 618 new spectra, of which 581 have identified redshifts. Adding redshifts available from the literature, the final catalogue contains data for 687 objects with redshifts identified for 650 of them. 295 galaxies have redshifts in the range 0.37<z<0.41, i. e. are cluster members or lie in the immediate neighbourhood of the cluster. The area covered by the survey is 21x25 arcmin2 in size, corresponding to 4x4.8 h^-2 Mpc2 at the cluster redshift. The survey is 45% complete down to V=22 over the whole field covered; within 3 arcmin of the cluster centre the completeness exceeds 80% at the same magnitude. A detailed completeness analysis is presented. The catalogue gives astrometric position, redshift, V magnitude and V-I colour, as well as the equivalent widths for a number of lines. Apart from the cluster Cl0024+1654 itself, three other structures are identified in redshift space: a group of galaxies at z=0.38, just in front of Cl0024+1654 and probably interacting with it, a close pair of groups of galaxies at z~0.495 and an overdensity of galaxies at z~0.18 with no obvious centre. The spectroscopic catalogue will be used to trace the three-dimensional structure of the cluster Cl0024+1654 as well as study the physical properties of the galaxies in the cluster and in its environment.

How accurately can we measure weak gravitational shear?

With the recent detection of cosmic shear, the most challenging effect of weak gravitational lensing has been observed. The main difficulties for this detection were the need for a large amount of high quality data and the control of systematics during the gravitational shear measurement process, in particular those coming from the Point Spread Function anisotropy. In this paper we perform detailed simulations with the state-of-the-art algorithm developed by Kaiser, Squires and Broadhurst (KSB) to measure gravitational shear. We show that for realistic PSF profiles the KSB algorithm can recover any shear amplitude in the range $0.012 < |\gammavec |<0.32$ with a relative, systematic error of $10-15%$. We give quantitative limits on the PSF correction method as a function of shear strength, object size, signal-to-noise and PSF anisotropy amplitude, and we provide an automatic procedure to get a reliable object catalog for shear measurements out of the raw images.

Gas, Dust, and Young Stars in the Outer Disk of M 31

Using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope we have obtained deep high-resolution CCD images in V and I of a 28'x28' field in the outer disk of M 31 at ~ 116' from the center along the major axis to the south-west, and covering a range of projected galactocentric distance from about 23 to 33 kpc. The field was chosen to correspond with extended HI features recorded near the HI edge of the galaxy. The many tens of thousands of objects detected in this large field have been classified using an automatic algorithm which distinguishes unresolved from resolved structures and provides photometry on them. For the most part the unresolved objects are stars in M 31. The V-I colors of these stars are highly correlated with the column density of HI in the field. Assuming a Galactic extinction law, this yields a minimum extinction/atomic-gas ratio about 1/3 of that in the Solar neighbourhood. The ISM in this outer disk of M 31 therefore contains substantial amounts of dust. We have identified a population of B stars in the field whose distribution is also well correlated with the extended HI distribution. Evidently, star formation is both ongoing and wide spread in the outer disk of M 31. According to the current view of the star formation process, molecular gas is therefore also expected to be present.

Numerical study of the cosmic shear

We study cosmic shear statistics using the ray-tracing simulation combined with a set of large $N$-body simulations. In this contribution, we first describe our method. Then we show some selected results especially focusing on effects of the deflection of light rays and the lens-lens coupling which are neglected in making the theoretical predictions of the cosmic shear statistics.

A Wide-Field Spectroscopic Survey In The Cluster Lens Cl0024+17

We present a detailed velocity histogram from a wide-field spectroscopic survey in the field of the cluster lens Cl0024 showing an unrelaxed foreground structure in addition to the relaxed main cluster. This finding reduces the velocity dispersion of the main cluster compared to previous studies by a factor of about 2 and thus resolves the discrepancy between previous mass estimates for this cluster.
