Minimizers for the thin one-phase free boundary problem

We consider the "thin one-phase" free boundary problem, associated to minimizing a weighted Dirichlet energy of the function in $\mathbb R^{n+1}_+$ plus the area of the positivity set of that function in $\mathbb R^n$. We establish full regularity of the free boundary for dimensions $n \leq 2$, prove almost everywhere regularity of the free boundary in arbitrary dimension and provide content and structure estimates on the singular set of the free boundary when it exists. All of these results hold for the full range of the relevant weight. While our results are typical for the calculus of variations, our approach does not follow the standard one first introduced in \cite{AltCaffarelli}. Instead, the nonlocal nature of the distributional measure associated to a minimizer necessitates arguments which are less reliant on the underlying PDE.

On BMO and Carleson measures on Riemannian manifolds

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a Riemannian $n$-manifold with a metric such that the manifold is Ahlfors-regular. We also assume either non-negative Ricci curvature, or that the Ricci curvature is bounded from below together with a bound on the gradient of the heat kernel. We characterize BMO-functions $u: \mathcal{M} \to \mathbb{R}$ by a Carleson measure condition of their $σ$-harmonic extension $U: \mathcal{M} \times (0,\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$. We make crucial use of a $T(b)$ theorem proved by Hofmann, Mitrea, Mitrea, and Morris. As an application we show that the famous theorem of Coifman--Lions--Meyer--Semmes holds in this class of manifolds: Jacobians of $W^{1,n}$-maps from $\mathcal{M}$ to $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be estimated against BMO-functions, which now follows from the arguments for commutators recently proposed by Lenzmann and the second-named author using only harmonic extensions, integration by parts, and trace space characterizations.

Singularity formation in the harmonic map flow with free boundary

In the past years, there has been a new light shed on the harmonic map problem with free boundary in view of its connection with nonlocal equations. Here we fully exploit this link, considering the harmonic map flow with free boundary \begin{equation}\label{e:main0} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu\text{ in }\mathbb{R}^2_+\times (0, T),\\ u(x,0,t) \in \mathbb{S}^1\text{ for all }(x,0,t)\in \partial\mathbb{R}^2_+\times (0, T),\\ \frac{du}{dy}(x,0,t)\perp T_{u(x,0,t)}\mathbb{S}^1\text{ for all }(x,0,t)\in \partial\mathbb{R}^2_+\times (0, T),\\ u(\cdot, 0) = u_0\text{ in }\mathbb{R}^2_+ \end{cases} \end{equation} for a function $u:\mathbb{R}^2_+\times [0, T)\to \mathbb{R}^2$. Here $u_0 :\mathbb{R}^2_+\to \mathbb{R}^2$ is a given smooth map and $\perp$ stands for orthogonality. We prove the existence of initial data $u_0$ such that (\ref{e:main0}) blows up at finite time with a profile being the half-harmonic map. This answers a question raised by Yunmei Chen and Fanghua Lin in Remark 4.9 of \cite{ChenLinJGA1998}.

Conformal invariants from nodal sets II. Manifolds with boundary

In this paper, we study conformal invariants that arise from nodal sets and negative eigenvalues of conformally covariant operators on manifolds with boundary. We also consider applications to curvature prescription problems on manifolds with boundary. We relate Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues and put the results developed here for the Escobar problem into the more general framework of boundary operators of arbitrary order.

Quasimode, eigenfunction and spectral projection bounds for Schrödinger operators on manifolds with critically singular potentials

We obtain quasimode, eigenfunction and spectral projection bounds for Schrödinger operators, $H_V=-Δ_g+V(x)$, on compact Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ of dimension $n\ge2$, which extend the results of the third author~\cite{sogge88} corresponding to the case where $V\equiv 0$. We are able to handle critically singular potentials and consequently assume that $V\in L^{\tfrac{n}2}(M)$ and/or $V\in {\mathcal K}(M)$ (the Kato class). Our techniques involve combining arguments for proving quasimode/resolvent estimates for the case where $V\equiv 0$ that go back to the third author \cite{sogge88} as well as ones which arose in the work of Kenig, Ruiz and this author~\cite{KRS} in the study of "uniform Sobolev estimates" in ${\mathbb R}^n$. We also use techniques from more recent developments of several authors concerning variations on the latter theme in the setting of compact manifolds. Using the spectral projection bounds we can prove a number of natural $L^p\to L^p$ spectral multiplier theorems under the assumption that $V\in L^{\frac{n}2}(M)\cap {\mathcal K}(M)$. Moreover, we can also obtain natural analogs of the original Strichartz estimates~\cite{Strichartz77} for solutions of $(\partial_t^2-Δ+V)u=0$. We also are able to obtain analogous results in ${\mathbb R}^n$ and state some global problems that seem related to works on absence of embedded eigenvalues for Schrödinger operators in ${\mathbb R}^n$ (e.g., \cite{IonescuJerison}, \cite{JK}, \cite{KenigNar}, \cite{KochTaEV} and \cite{iRodS}.)

Nonuniqueness of conformal metrics with constant $Q$-curvature

We establish several nonuniqueness results for the problem of finding complete conformal metrics with constant (fourth-order) $Q$-curvature on compact and noncompact manifolds of dimension $\geq5$. Infinitely many branches of metrics with constant $Q$-curvature, but without constant scalar curvature, are found to bifurcate from Berger metrics on spheres and complex projective spaces. These provide examples of nonisometric metrics with the same constant negative $Q$-curvature in a conformal class with negative Yamabe invariant, echoing the absence of a Maximum Principle. We also discover infinitely many complete metrics with constant $Q$-curvature conformal to $\mathbb S^m\times\mathbb R^d$, $m\geq4$, $d\geq1$, and $\mathbb S^m\times\mathbb H^d$, $2\leq d\leq m-3$; which give infinitely many solutions to the singular constant $Q$-curvature problem on round spheres $\mathbb S^n$ blowing up along a round subsphere $\mathbb S^k$, for all $0\leq k<(n-4)/2$.

The non-local mean-field equation on an interval

We consider the fractional mean-field equation on the interval $I=(-1,1)$ $$(-Δ)^\frac{1}{2} u=ρ\frac{e^{u}}{\int_{I}e^{u}dx},$$ subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions, and prove that existence holds if and only if $ρ<2π$. This requires the study of blowing-up sequences of solutions. We provide a series of tools in particular which can be used (and extended) to higher-order mean field equations of non-local type.

Convergence of the fractional Yamabe flow for a class of initial data

This work is a follow-up on the work of the second author with P. Daskalopoulos and J.L. Vázquez. In this latter work, we introduced the Yamabe flow associated to the so-called fractional curvature and prove some existence result of mild (semi-group) solutions. In the present work, we continue this study by proving that for some class of data one can prove actually convergence of the flow in a more general context. We build on the approach simplified in the book of M. Struwe.

On the nodal set of solutions to degenerate or singular elliptic equations with an application to $s-$harmonic functions

This work is devoted to the geometric-theoretic analysis of the nodal set of solutions to degenerate or singular equations involving a class of operators including $$ L_a = \mbox{div}(\abs{y}^a \nabla), $$ with $a\in(-1,1)$ and their perturbations. As they belong to the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$, these operators appear in the seminal works of Fabes, Kenig, Jerison and Serapioni \cite{fkj,fjk2,fks} and have recently attracted a lot of attention in the last decade due to their link to the localization of the fractional Laplacian via the extension in one more dimension \cite{CS2007}. Our goal in the present paper is to develop a complete theory of the stratification properties for the nodal set of solutions of such equations in the spirit of the seminal works of Hardt, Simon, Han and Lin \cite{MR1010169,MR1305956,MR1090434}.

Symmetry properties for solutions of nonlocal equations involving nonlinear operators

We pursue the study of one-dimensional symmetry of solutions to nonlinear equations involving nonlocal operators. We consider a vast class of nonlinear operators and in a particular case it covers the fractional $p-$Laplacian operator. Just like the classical De Giorgi's conjecture, we establish a Poincaré inequality and a linear Liouville theorem to provide two different proofs of the one-dimensional symmetry results in two dimensions. Both approaches are of independent interests. In addition, we provide certain energy estimates for layer solutions and Liouville theorems for stable solutions. Most of the methods and ideas applied in the current article are applicable to nonlocal operators with general kernels where the famous extension problem, given by Caffarelli and Silvestre, is not necessarily known.

Boundary connected sum of Escobar manifolds

Let $(X_1, \bar g_1)$ and $(X_2, \bar g_2)$ be two compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary $(M_1,g_1)$ and $(M_2,g_2)$ respectively. The Escobar problem consists in prescribing a conformal metric on a compact manifold with boundary with zero scalar curvature in the interior and constant mean curvature of the boundary. The present work is the construction of a connected sum $X=X_1 \sharp X_2$ by excising half ball near points on the boundary. The resulting metric on $X$ has zero scalar curvature and a CMC boundary. We fully exploit the nonlocal aspect of the problem and use new tools developed in recent years to handle such kinds of issues. Our problem is of course a very well-known problem in geometric analysis and that is why we consider it but the results in the present paper can be extended to other more analytical problems involving connected sums of constant fractional curvatures.

Critical exponent for the global existence of solutions to a nonlinear degenerate/singular parabolic equation

We investigate a non-homogeneous nonlinear heat equation which involves degenerate or singular coefficients belonging to the $A_2$ class of functions. We prove the existence of a Fujita exponent and describe the dichotomy existence/non-existence of global in time solutions. The $A_2$ coefficient admits either a singularity at the origin or a line of singularities. In this latter case, the problem is related to the fractional laplacian, through the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension and is a first attempt to develop a parabolic theory in this setting.

Infinite time blow-up for half-harmonic map flow from $\mathbb{R}$ into $\mathbb{S}^1$

We study infinite time blow-up phenomenon for the half-harmonic map flow \begin{equation}\label{e:main00} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} u_t = -(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}}u + \left(\frac{1}{2π}\int_{\mathbb{R}}\frac{|u(x)-u(s)|^2}{|x-s|^2}ds\right)u\quad\text{ in }\mathbb{R}\times (0, \infty), u(\cdot, 0) = u_0\quad\text{ in }\mathbb{R}, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} with a function $u:\mathbb{R}\times [0, \infty)\to \mathbb{S}^1$. Let $q_1,\cdots, q_k$ be distinct points in $\mathbb{R}$, there exist an initial datum $u_0$ and smooth functions $ξ_j(t)\to q_j$, $0<μ_j(t)\to 0$, as $t\to +\infty$, $j = 1, \cdots, k$, such that the solution $u_q$ of Problem (\ref{e:main00}) has the form \begin{equation*} u_q =ω_\infty +\sum_{j= 1}^k \left(ω(\frac{x-ξ_j(t)}{μ_j(t)} )-ω_\infty \right)+θ(x, t), \end{equation*} where $ω$ is the canonical least energy half-harmonic map, $ω_\infty=\begin{pmatrix} 0 1 \end{pmatrix} $, $θ(x, t)\to 0$ as $t\to +\infty$, uniformly away from the points $q_j$. In addition, the parameter functions $μ_j(t)$ decay to $0$ exponentially.

Lifting in Besov Spaces

Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb R^n$ and u be a measurable function on $Ω$ such that $|u(x)|=1$ almost everywhere in $Ω$. Assume that u belongs to the $B^s_{p,q}(Ω)$ Besov space. We investigate whether there exists a real-valued function $φ\in B^s_{p,q}$ such that $u=e^{iφ}$. This extends the corresponding study in Sobolev spaces due to Bourgain, Brezis and the first author. The analysis of this lifting problem leads us to prove some interesting new properties of Besov spaces, in particular a non restriction property when $q>p$.

Weak and smooth solutions for a fractional Yamabe flow: the case of general compact and locally conformally flat manifolds

As a counterpart of the classical Yamabe problem, a fractional Yamabe flow has been introduced by Jin and Xiong (2014) on the sphere. Here we pursue its study in the context of general compact smooth manifolds with positive fractional curvature. First, we prove that the flow is locally well posed in the weak sense on any compact manifold. If the manifold is locally conformally flat with positive Yamabe invariant, we also prove that the flow is smooth and converges to a constant scalar curvature metric. We provide different proofs using extension properties introduced by Chang and González (2011) for the conformally covariant fractional order operators.
