Construction of invariant whiskered tori by a parameterization method. Part I: Maps and flows in finite dimensions

We present theorems which provide the existence of invariant whiskered tori in finite-dimensional exact symplectic maps and flows. The method is based on the study of a functional equation expressing that there is an invariant torus. We show that, given an approximate solution of the invariance equation which satisfies some non-degeneracy conditions, there is a true solution nearby. We call this an {\sl a posteriori} approach. The proof of the main theorems is based on an iterative method to solve the functional equation. The theorems do not assume that the system is close to integrable nor that it is written in action-angle variables (hence we can deal in a unified way with primary and secondary tori). It also does not assume that the hyperbolic bundles are trivial and much less that the hyperbolic motion can be reduced to constant. The a posteriori formulation allows us to justify approximate solutions produced by many non-rigorous methods (e.g. formal series expansions, numerical methods). The iterative method is not based on transformation theory, but rather on succesive corrections. This makes it possible to adapt the method almost verbatim to several infinite-dimensional situations, which we will discuss in a forthcoming paper. We also note that the method leads to fast and efficient algorithms. We plan to develop these improvements in forthcoming papers.

Stable solutions of elliptic equations on Riemannian manifolds

This paper is devoted to the study of rigidity properties for special solutions of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations on smooth, boundaryless Riemannian manifolds. As far as stable solutions are concerned, we derive a new weighted Poincaré inequality which allows to prove Liouville type results and the flatness of the level sets of the solution in dimension 2, under suitable geometric assumptions on the ambient manifold.

Rigidity results for some boundary quasilinear phase transitions

We consider a quasilinear equation given in the half-space, i.e. a so called boundary reaction problem. Our concerns are a geometric Poincaré inequality and, as a byproduct of this inequality, a result on the symmetry of low-dimensional bounded stable solutions, under some suitable assumptions on the nonlinearities. More precisely, we analyze the following boundary problem $$ \left\{\begin{matrix} -{\rm div} (a(x,|\nabla u|)\nabla u)+g(x,u)=0 \qquad {on $\R^n\times(0,+\infty)$} -a(x,|\nabla u|)u_x = f(u) \qquad{\mbox{on $\R^n\times\{0\}$}}\end{matrix} \right.$$ under some natural assumptions on the diffusion coefficient $a(x,|\nabla u|)$ and the nonlinearities $f$ and $g$. Here, $u=u(y,x)$, with $y\in\R^n$ and $x\in(0,+\infty)$. This type of PDE can be seen as a nonlocal problem on the boundary $\partial \R^{n+1}_+$. The assumptions on $a(x,|\nabla u|)$ allow to treat in a unified way the $p-$laplacian and the minimal surface operators.

Fractional Laplacian phase transitions and boundary reactions: a geometric inequality and a symmetry result

We deal with symmetry properties for solutions of nonlocal equations of the type $(-Δ)^s v= f(v)\qquad {in $\R^n$,}$ where $s \in (0,1)$ and the operator $(-Δ)^s$ is the so-called fractional Laplacian. The study of this nonlocal equation is made via a careful analysis of the following degenerate elliptic equation ${-div (x^\a \nabla u)=0 \qquad {on $\R^n\times(0,+\infty)$} -x^\a u_x = f(u) \qquad {on $\R^n\times\{0\}$} $ where $\a \in (-1,1)$. This equation is related to the fractional Laplacian since the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $Γ_\a: u|_{\partial \R^{n+1}_+} \mapsto -x^\a u_x |_{\partial \R^{n+1}_+} $ is $(-Δ)^{\frac{1-\a}{2}}$. This equation is related to the fractional Laplacian since the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $Γ_\a: u|_{\partial \R^{n+1}_+} \mapsto -x^\a u_x |_{\partial \R^{n+1}_+} $ is $(-Δ)^{\frac{1-\a}{2}}$. More generally, we study the so-called boundary reaction equations given by ${-div (μ(x) \nabla u)+g(x,u)=0 {on $\R^n\times(0,+\infty)$} - μ(x) u_x = f(u) {on $\R^n\times{0}$}$ under some natural assumptions on the diffusion coefficient $μ$ and on the nonlinearities $f$ and $g$. We prove a geometric formula of Poincaré-type for stable solutions, from which we derive a symmetry result in the spirit of a conjecture of De Giorgi.

Numerical computation of travelling breathers in Klein-Gordon chains

We numerically study the existence of travelling breathers in Klein-Gordon chains, which consist of one-dimensional networks of nonlinear oscillators in an anharmonic on-site potential, linearly coupled to their nearest neighbors. Travelling breathers are spatially localized solutions having the property of being exactly translated by $p$ sites along the chain after a fixed propagation time $T$ (these solutions generalize the concept of solitary waves for which $p=1$). In the case of even on-site potentials, the existence of small amplitude travelling breathers superposed on a small oscillatory tail has been proved recently (G. James and Y. Sire, to appear in {\sl Comm. Math. Phys.}, 2004), the tail being exponentially small with respect to the central oscillation size. In this paper we compute these solutions numerically and continue them into the large amplitude regime for different types of even potentials. We find that Klein-Gordon chains can support highly localized travelling breather solutions superposed on an oscillatory tail. We provide examples where the tail can be made very small and is difficult to detect at the scale of central oscillations. In addition we numerically observe the existence of these solutions in the case of non even potentials.
