Hilbert-space selected switch of helical edges in an artificial quantum Hall insulator

Quantum Hall effects (QHE) host one-dimensional topologically-protected edge channels, which can serve as an essential ingredient in exotic quantum electronic systems. Yet the manual reconstruction of Landau-level topology, by electrostatic confinement or symmetry breaking, remains experimentally challenging. Here, we show that interfacial charge transfer in between CrOCl and large-angle twisted bilayer graphene offsets the two otherwise decoupled Dirac Landau-level ladders in each graphene layer, creating a new sequence of composite filling configurations. At charge neutrality, the composited $(+2,-2)$ state involves only the zeroth Landau levels and becomes fully insulating, with longitudinal resistance reaching the G$\Omega$ regime. By contrast, higher composite zero-filling quantum Hall states, including $(+6,-6)$ and $(+10,-10)$, retain counter-propagating helical edge channels and exhibit pronounced non-local transport, reaching up to $50\%$ of the local response. We attribute such switching-behavior to the Landau-spinor Hilbert space -- as the filling is reduced from $(+6,-6)$ to $(+2,-2)$, the orthogonal $N=\pm1$ orbital components are removed, eliminating the edge-compatible channel and gapping both bulk and boundary transport. The interaction nature of the observed gapped sates was further examined both experimentally and theoretically. Our results suggest that charge transfer provides a direct route to engineer artificial quantum Hall insulators, opening possibilities for wavefunction-selective control of helical edge modes.

Stack of correlated insulating states in bilayer graphene kagome superlattice

Graphene-based systems have emerged as a rich platform for exploring emergent quantum phenomena-including superconductivity, magnetism, and correlated insulating behavior-arising from flat electronic bands that enhance many-body interactions. Realizing such flat bands has thus far relied primarily on moir\'e graphene superlattices or rhombohedral stacking graphene systems, both of which face challenges in reproducibility and tunability. Here, we introduce an artificial Kagome superlattice in bilayer graphene, engineered via nanopatterning of the dielectric substrate to create a precisely defined and electrostatically tunable periodic potential. Magnetotransport measurements reveal the emergence of a stack of correlated insulating states at moderate superlattice potentials, characteristic of strong electron-electron interactions within Kagome-induced flat bands. As temperature increases, these correlated gaps collapse, signaling the thermal suppression of interaction-driven states. Continuum-model calculations confirm the formation of multiple flat minibands and reproduce the observed evolution of band reconstruction. Our results establish dielectric-patterned graphene superlattices as a robust and controllable architecture for realizing flat-band-induced correlated phenomena beyond moir\'e systems.

Correlated states in charge-transfer heterostructures based on rhombohedral multilayer graphene

Charge transfer is a common phenomenon in van der Waals heterostructures with proper work function mismatch, which enables electrostatic gating to control band alignment and interlayer charge distributions. This provides a tunable platform for studying coupled bilayer correlated electronic systems. Here, we theoretically investigate heterostructures of rhombohedral multilayer graphene (RMG) and an insulating substrate with gate-tunable band alignment. We first develop a self-consistent electrostatic theory for layer charge densities incorporating charge transfer, which reproduces the experimentally observed broadened and bent charge neutrality region. When the substrate's band edge has a much larger effective mass than RMG, its carriers may form a Wigner crystal at low densities. This generates a quantum superlattice that induces topological flat bands in the RMG layer through interlayer Coulomb interactions, which may further lead to Chern insulators driven by Coulomb interactions within the RMG layers. Conversely, with comparable effective masses, we find an interlayer excitonic insulator state at charge neutrality stabilized by interlayer Coulomb coupling. Our work establishes these charge-transfer heterostructures as a rich platform for topological and excitonic correlated states.

Fractional topological states in rhombohedral multilayer graphene modulated by kagome superlattice

Fractional quantum anomalous Hall effects realized in twisted bilayer MoTe$_2$ and multilayer-graphene-based moir\'e heterostructures have captured a tremendous growth of interest. In this work, we propose that rhombohedral multilayer graphene coupled with an artificial kagome superlattice potential is a new platform to realize various fractional topological phases. Taking Bernal bilayer graphene as the simplest example, when it is placed on top of a prepatterned SiO$_2$ substrate with periodic arrays of holes arranged into kagome lattice, the system would be subject to a tunable kagome superlattice potential once an electrostatic voltage drop between the top and bottom gates is applied. Then, we theoretically study the electronic band structures, topological properties, and quantum geometric properties of the Bloch states of Bernal bilayer graphene coupled with a realistic kagome superlattice potential, which is well benchmarked by transport measurements in the weak superlattice-potential regime. We find that the system may exhibit nearly ideal topological flat bands in a substantial region of the parameter space spanned by superlattice constant and electrostatic potential strength. When these topological flat bands are fractionally filled, exact diagonalization calculations suggest that the system would exhibit rich fractional topological phases at 1/3, 2/3, 2/5, 3/5 and 1/2 fillings including both fractional Chern insulators and anomalous composite Fermi liquids under zero magnetic field.
