Core-Shell Nanofiber Containing Large Amount of Flame Retardants via Coaxial Dual-Nozzle Electrospinning as Battery Separators

Lithium-ion batteries have attracted enormous interests recently as promising power sources. However, the safety issue associated with the employment of highly flammable liquid electrolyte impedes the further development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Recently, researchers reported the use of electrospun core-shell fiber as the battery separator consisting of polymer layer as protective shell and flame retardants loaded inside as core. In case of a typical battery shorting, the protective polymer shell melts during thermal-runaway and the flame retardants inside would be released to suppress the combustion of the electrolyte. Due to the use of a single precursor solution for electrospinning containing both polymer and flame retardants, the weight ratio of flame retardants is limited and dependent. Herein, we developed a dual-nozzle, coaxial electrospinning approach to fabricate the core-shell nanofiber with a greatly enhanced flame retardants weight percentage in the final fibers. The weight ratio of flame retardants of triphenyl phosphate in the final composite reaches over 60 wt.%. The LiFePO4-based cell using this composite nanofiber as battery separator exhibits excellent flame-retardant property without compromising the cycling stability or rate performances. In addition, this functional nanofiber can also be coated onto commercial separators instead of being used directly as separators.

Semigroups --- A Computational Approach

The question whether there exists an integral solution to the system of linear equations with non-negative constraints, $A\x = \b, \, \x \ge 0$, where $A \in \Z^{m\times n}$ and ${\mathbf b} \in \Z^m$, finds its applications in many areas, such as operation research, number theory and statistics. In order to solve this problem, we have to understand the semigroup generated by the columns of the matrix $A$ and the structure of the "holes" which are the difference between the semigroup generated by the columns of the matrix $A$ and its saturation. In this paper, we discuss the implementation of an algorithm by Hemmecke, Takemura, and Yoshida that computes the set of holes of a semigroup, % generated by the columns of $A$ and we discuss applications to problems in combinatorics. Moreover, we compute the set of holes for the common diagonal effect model, and we show that the $n$th linear ordering polytope has the integer-decomposition property for $n\leq 7$. Arrhenius-type domain growth in Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 crystals

Single crystals of Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) poled along [001] were investigated by dielectric, x-ray, and polarized light (PLM) and piezo-force microscopy (PFM) methods. PLM revealed {100} macro-domain plates that formed after poling, whose size increased on heating between room temperature and a rhombohedral \rightarrow tetragonal phase transition, above which point a break-up of the macro-domain plates was observed. Corresponding PFM studies demonstrated that poling reduced the size of stripe-like domains that were internal to the macro-domain plates, whose size also increased on heating to TR-T. The temperature dependence of both the size of the macro-domain plates and internal sub-domains followed the Arrhenius relation with the activation energy of 0.4-0.5eV. The coercive field displays an abnormal increase on heating below TR-T, different than that for PMN-PT. The anomalously increased coercive field can be ascribed to the Arrhenius-type domain growth, indicating a simple thermally activated process and an important role of hierarchial domains in the improved performance of PIN-PMN-PT.
