Holographic Charged Fluid with Chiral Electric Separation Effect

Hydrodynamics with both vector and axial currents is under study within a holographic model, consisting of canonical $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ gauge fields in an asymptotically AdS$_5$ black brane. When gravitational back-reaction is taken into account, the chiral electric separation effect (CESE), namely the generation of an axial current as the response to an external electric field, is realized naturally. Via fluid/gravity correspondence, all the first order transport coefficients in the hydrodynamic constitutive relations are evaluated analytically: they are functions of vector chemical potential $μ$, axial chemical potential $μ_5$ and the fluid's temperature $T$. Apart from the proportionality factor $μμ_5$, the CESE conductivity is found to be dependent on the dimensionless quantities $μ/T$ and $μ_5/T$ nontrivially. As a complementary study, frequency-dependent transport phenomena are revealed through linear response analysis, demonstrating perfect agreement with the results obtained from fluid/gravity correspondence.

Holographic Magnetized Chiral Density Wave

We explore the end point of the helical instability in finite density, finite magnetic field background discussed by Kharzeev and Yee [1]. The nonlinear solution is obtained and identified with the (magnetized) chiral density wave phase in literature. We find there are two branches of solutions, which match with the two unstable modes in [1]. At large chemical potential and magnetic field, the magnetized chiral density wave can be thermodynamically preferred over chirally symmetric phase and chiral symmetry breaking phase. Interestingly, we find an exotic state with vanishing chemical potential at large magnetic field. We also attempt to clarify the role of anomalous charge in holographic model.

Anomalous transport from holography: Part II

This is a second study of chiral anomaly induced transport within a holographic model consisting of anomalous $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$ spacetime. In the first part, chiral magnetic/separation effects (CME/CSE) are considered in presence of a static spatially-inhomogeneous external magnetic field. Gradient corrections to CME/CSE are analytically evaluated up to third order in the derivative expansion. Some of the third order gradient corrections lead to an anomaly-induced negative $B^2$-correction to the diffusion constant. We also find non-linear in $B$ modifications to the chiral magnetic wave (CMW). In the second part, we focus on the experimentally interesting case of the axial chemical potential being induced dynamically by a constant magnetic and time-dependent electric fields. Constitutive relations for the vector/axial currents are computed employing two different approximations: (a) derivative expansion (up to third order) but fully nonlinear in the external fields, and (b) weak electric field limit but resuming all orders in the derivative expansion. A non-vanishing non-linear axial current (CSE) is found in the first case. Dependence on magnetic field and frequency of linear transport coefficient functions (TCFs) is explored in the second.

Anomalous transport from holography: Part I

We revisit the transport properties induced by the chiral anomaly in a charged plasma holographically dual to anomalous $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Maxwell theory in Schwarzschild-$AdS_5$. Off-shell constitutive relations for vector and axial currents are derived using various approximations generalising most of known in the literature anomaly-induced phenomena and revealing some new ones. In a weak external field approximation, the constitutive relations have all-order derivatives resummed into six momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions: the diffusion, the electric/magnetic conductivity, and three anomaly induced functions. The latter generalise the chiral magnetic and chiral separation effects. Nonlinear transport is studied assuming presence of constant background external fields. The chiral magnetic effect, including all order nonlinearity in magnetic field, is proven to be exact when the magnetic field is the only external field that is turned on. Non-linear corrections to the constitutive relations due to electric and axial external fields are computed.

$U(1)$ current from the AdS/CFT: diffusion, conductivity and causality

For a holographically defined finite temperature theory, we derive an off-shell constitutive relation for a global $U(1)$ current driven by a weak external non-dynamical electromagnetic field. The constitutive relation involves an all order gradient expansion resummed into three momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions: diffusion, electric conductivity, and "magnetic" conductivity. These transport functions are first computed analytically in the hydrodynamic limit, up to third order in the derivative expansion, and then numerically for generic values of momenta. We also compute a diffusion memory function, which, as a result of all order gradient resummation, is found to be causal.

Hydrodynamics dual to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity: all-order gradient resummation

Relativistic hydrodynamics dual to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in asymptotic $\textrm{AdS}_5$ space is under study. To linear order in the amplitude of the fluid velocity and temperature, we derive the fluid's stress-energy tensor via an all-order resummation of the derivative terms. Each order is accompanied by new transport coefficients, which all together could be compactly absorbed into two functions of momenta, referred to as viscosity functions. Via inverse Fourier transform, these viscosities appear as memory functions in the constitutive relation between components of the stress-energy tensor.

Linearized fluid/gravity correspondence: from shear viscosity to all order hydrodynamics

In ref. \cite{1406.7222}, we reported a construction of all order linearized fluid dynamics with strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory as underlying microscopic description. The linearized fluid/gravity correspondence makes it possible to resum all order derivative terms in the fluid stress tensor. Dissipative effects are fully encoded by the shear term and a new one, emerging starting from third order in hydrodynamic derivative expansion. In this work, we provide all computational details omitted in \cite{1406.7222} and present additional results. We derive closed-form linear holographic RG flow-type equations for momenta-dependent transport coefficient functions. Generalized Navier-Stokes equations are shown to emerge from the constraint components of the bulk Einstein equations. We perturbatively solve the RG equations for the viscosity functions, up to third order in derivative expansion, and up to this order compute spectrum of small fluctuations. Finally, we solve the RG equations numerically, thus accounting for all order derivative terms in the boundary stress tensor.

Linearly resummed hydrodynamics in a weakly curved spacetime

We extend our study of all-order linearly resummed hydrodynamics in a flat space~\cite{1406.7222,1409.3095} to fluids in weakly curved spaces. The underlying microscopic theory is a finite temperature $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. The AdS/CFT correspondence relates black brane solutions of the Einstein gravity in asymptotically \emph{locally} $\textrm{AdS}_5$ geometry to relativistic conformal fluids in a weakly curved 4D background. To linear order in the amplitude of hydrodynamic variables and metric perturbations, the fluid's energy-momentum tensor is computed with derivatives of both the fluid velocity and background metric resummed to all orders. We extensively discuss the meaning of all order hydrodynamics by expressing it in terms of the memory function formalism, which is also suitable for practical simulations. In addition to two viscosity functions discussed at length in refs.~\cite{1406.7222,1409.3095}, we find four curvature induced structures coupled to the fluid via new transport coefficient functions. In ref.~\cite{0905.4069}, the latter were referred to as gravitational susceptibilities of the fluid. We analytically compute these coefficients in the hydrodynamic limit, and then numerically up to large values of momenta.

All Order Linearized Hydrodynamics from Fluid/Gravity Correspondence

Using fluid/gravity correspondence, we determine the (linearized) stress energy tensor of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling with all orders in derivatives of fluid velocity included. We find that the dissipative effects are fully encoded in the shear term and a new one, which emerges starting from the third order. We derive, for the first time, closed linear holographic RG flow-type equations for (generalized) momenta-dependent viscosity functions. In the hydrodynamic regime, we obtain the stress tensor up to third order in derivative expansion analytically. We then numerically determine the viscosity functions up to large momenta. As a check of our results, we also derive the generalized Navier-Stokes equations from the Einstein equations in the dual gravity.

Holographic superconductors with $z=2$ Lifshitz scaling

We use gauge/gravity duality to explore strongly coupled superconductors with dynamical exponent $z=2$. In the probe limit we numerically establish background solutions for the matter fields and plot the condensate versus the dimensionless temperature. We then investigate electromagnetic perturbations in order to compute the AC conductivity and also calculate the spectral function. Our results for the condensate and conductivity are qualitatively similar to those of the AdS superconductor. However, we find that (for both s- and p-wave) the condensate does not approach a constant at very low temperature and the conductivity goes to one from below but never exceeds it in the high frequency limit, in contrast to the AdS black hole. We do not see a peak at nonzero frequency in the imaginary part of the AC conductivity along the $x$ direction for the p-wave case. These features are due to the nontrivial dynamical exponent. To be specific, the black hole geometry considered in this work is anisotropic between space and time, very different from the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole, which results in different asymptotic behaviors of temporal and spatial components of gauge fields than those in the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole.

1+1-dimensional p-wave superconductors from intersecting D-branes

In this work we explore 1+1 dimensional p-wave superconductors using the probe D-brane construction. Specifically, we choose three intersecting D-brane models: D1/D5, D2/D4 and D3/D3 systems. According to the dilaton running behavior, we denote the former two systems as nonconformal models and the last system as conformal. We find that all three models are qualitatively similar in describing superconducting condensate as well as some basic features (such as the gap formation and DC superconductivity) of superconducting conductivity. There also exist some differences among the three models as far as the AC conductivity is concerned. Specifically, for D3/D3 model there is no peak at nonzero frequency for the imaginary part of the conductivity, which is present in the nonconformal models; their asymptotic behaviors are different-for D1/D5 the real part of the AC conductivity approaches one at large frequency limit, for D2/D4 it slowly goes to a certain nonzero constant smaller than one and for D3/D3 it goes to zero. We find the profile of the AC conductivity for the D1/D5 system is very similar to that of higher dimensional p-wave superconductors.
