Switchable bifunctional metasurfaces: nearly perfect retroreflection and absorption at THz regime

Here we make use of vanadium dioxide (VO2) to design a bifunctional metasurface working at the same targeted frequency. With the increase of temperature, the functionality of the designed metasurface can switch from a multi-channel retroreflector to a perfect absorber, caused by the phase transition of VO2 from insulator to conductor. Different from traditional bifunctional metasurfaces designed by simple composition of two functionalities, our proposed bifunctional metasurface is based on the interaction between two functionalities. The device shows good potential for the combination of wavefront manipulation and optical absorption, therefore providing a promising approach for switchable detection and anti-detection devices.

Enhanced third-harmonic generation induced by nonlinear field resonances in plasmonic-graphene metasurfaces

Nonlinear metasurfaces offer new paradigm for boosting optical effect beyond limitations of conventional materials. In this work, we present an alternative way to produce pronounced third-harmonic generation (THG) based on nonlinear field resonances rather than linear field enhancement, which is a typical strategy for achieving strong nonlinear response. By designing and studying a nonlinear plasmonic-graphene metasurface at terahertz regime with hybrid guided modes and bound states in the continuum modes, it is found that a THG with a narrow bandwidth can be observed, thanks to the strong resonance between generated weak THG field and these modes. Such strong nonlinear field resonance greatly enhances the photon-photon interactions, thus resulting in a large effective nonlinear coefficient of the whole system. This finding provides new opportunity for studying nonlinear optical metasurfaces.

Coherent perfect absorber and laser in purely imaginary conjugate metamaterials

Conjugate metamaterials, in which the permittivity and the permeability are complex conjugates of each other, possess the elements of loss and gain simultaneously. By employing a conjugate metamaterial with a purely imaginary form, we propose a mechanism for realizing both coherent perfect absorber (CPA) and laser modes, which have been widely investigated in parity-time symmetric systems. Moreover, the general conditions for obtaining CPA and laser modes, including obtaining them simultaneously, are revealed by analyzing the wave scattering properties of a slab made of purely imaginary conjugate metamaterials. Specifically, in a purely imaginary conjugate metamaterial slab with a sub-unity effective refractive index, perfect absorption can be realized for the incident wave from air.

Gas Sensing Properties of Single Conducting Polymer Nanowires and the Effect of Temperature

We measured the electronic properties and gas sensing responses of template-grown poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS)-based nanowires. The nanowires have a "striped" structure (gold-PEDOT/PSS-gold), typically 8um long (1um-6um-1um for each section, respectively) and 220 nm in diameter. Single-nanowire devices were contacted by pre-fabricated gold electrodes using dielectrophoretic assembly. A polymer conductivity of 11.5 +/- 0.7 S/cm and a contact resistance of 27.6 +/- 4 kOhm were inferred from measurements of nanowires of varying length and diameter. The nanowire sensors detect a variety of odors, with rapid response and recovery (seconds). The response (R-R0)/R0 varies as a power law with analyte concentration.

Dielectrophoretically Assembled Polymer Nanowires for Gas Sensing

We measured the electronic properties and gas sensing response of nanowires containing segments of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) that were synthesized using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. The nanowires have a "striped" structure of gold-PEDOT/PSS-gold and are typically 8 um long (1 um-6 um-1 um for each section, respectively) and 220 nm in diameter. Dielectrophoretic assembly was used to position single nanowires on pre-fabricated gold electrodes. A polymer conductivity of 11.5 +/- 0.7 S/cm and a contact resistance of 27.6 +/- 4 kOhm were inferred from resistance measurements of nanowires of varying length and diameter. When used as gas sensors, the wires showed a resistance change of 10.5%, 9%, and 4% at the saturation vapor pressure of acetone, methanol and ethanol, respectively. Sensor response and recovery were rapid (seconds) with excellent reproducibility in time and across devices. "Striped" template-grown nanowires are thus intriguing candidates for use in electronic nose vapor sensing systems.
