Symmetry of hypersurfaces with ordered mean curvature in one direction

For a connected $n$-dimensional compact smooth hypersurface $M$ without boundary embedded in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, a classical result of Aleksandrov shows that it must be a sphere if it has constant mean curvature. Li and Nirenberg studied a one-directional analog of this result: if every pair of points $(x',a), (x',b)\in M$ with $a<b$ has ordered mean curvature $H(x',b)\leq H(x',a)$, then $M$ is symmetric about some hyperplane $x_{n+1}=c$ under some additional conditions. Their proof was done by the moving plane method and some variations of the Hopf Lemma. We obtain the symmetry of $M$ under some weaker assumptions using a variational argument, giving a positive answer to the conjecture given by Li and Nirenberg.

Two-species competition model with chemotaxis: well-posedness, stability and dynamics

We study a system of PDEs modeling the population dynamics of two competitive species whose spatial movements are governed by both diffusion and mutually repulsive chemotaxis effects. We prove that solutions to this system are globally well-posed, without any smallness assumptions on the chemotactic coefficients. Moreover, in the weak competition regime, we prove that neither species can be driven to extinction as the time goes to infinity, regardless of how strong the chemotaxis coefficients are. Finally, long-time behaviors of the system are studied both analytically in the weakly nonlinear regime, and numerically in the fully nonlinear regime.

Scattering-lens based quantum imaging beyond shot noise

The scheme of optical imaging using scattering lens can provide a resolution beyond the classical optical diffraction limit with a coherent-state input. Nevertheless, due to the shot noise of the coherent state, the corresponding signal-to-noise ratio and resolution are both still shot-noise-limited. In order to circumvent this problem, we theoretically propose an alternative scheme where the squeezed state (with a sub-shot noise) is considered as input and the quantum noise is then suppressed below the shot-noise level. Consequently, when comparing with the previous imaging scheme (using combination of coherent state and scattering lens), our proposal is able to achieve an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio for a given scattering lens. Meanwhile, it is demonstrated that the resolution is also improved. We believe that this method may afford a new way of using squeezed states and enable a higher performance than that of using coherent state and scattering lens.

UrbanVCA: a vector-based cellular automata framework to simulate the urban land-use change at the land-parcel level

Vector-based cellular automata (CA) based on real land-parcel has become an important trend in current urban development simulation studies. Compared with raster-based and parcel-based CA models, vector CA models are difficult to be widely used because of their complex data structures and technical difficulties. The UrbanVCA, a brand-new vector CA-based urban development simulation framework was proposed in this study, which supports multiple machine-learning models. To measure the simulation accuracy better, this study also first proposes a vector-based landscape index (VecLI) model based on the real land-parcels. Using Shunde, Guangdong as the study area, the UrbanVCA simulates multiple types of urban land-use changes at the land-parcel level have achieved a high accuracy (FoM=0.243) and the landscape index similarity reaches 87.3%. The simulation results in 2030 show that the eco-protection scenario can promote urban agglomeration and reduce ecological aggression and loss of arable land by at least 60%. Besides, we have developed and released UrbanVCA software for urban planners and researchers.

Small scale formations in the incompressible porous media equation

We construct examples of solutions to the incompressible porous media (IPM) equation that must exhibit infinite in time growth of derivatives provided they remain smooth. As an application, this allows us to obtain nonlinear instability for a class of stratified steady states of IPM.

Excess-noise suppression for a squeezed state propagating through random amplifying media via wave-front shaping

After propagating through a random amplifying medium, a squeezed state commonly shows excess noise above the shot-noise level. Since large noise can significantly reduce the signal-to-noise ratio, it is detrimental for precision measurement. To circumvent this problem, we propose a noise-reduction scheme using wavefront shaping. It is demonstrated that the average output quantum noise can be effectively suppressed even beyond the shot-noise limit. Both the decrease on amplification strength and the increase on input squeezing strength can give rise to a decrease in the suppressed average quantum noise. Our results not only show the feasibility of manipulating the output quantum noise of random amplifying media, but also indicate potential applications in quantum information processing in complex environments, such as, quantum imaging, quantum communication, and quantum key distribution.

Remarks on stationary and uniformly-rotating vortex sheets: Rigidity results

In this paper, we show that the only solution of the vortex sheet equation, either stationary or uniformly rotating with negative angular velocity $Ω$, such that it has positive vorticity and is concentrated in a finite disjoint union of smooth curves with finite length is the trivial one: constant vorticity amplitude supported on a union of nested, concentric circles. The proof follows a desingularization argument and a calculus of variations flavor.

Understanding the drivers of sustainable land expansion using a patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model: A case study in Wuhan, China

Cellular Automata (CA) are widely used to model the dynamics within complex land use and land cover (LULC) systems. Past CA model research has focused on improving the technical modeling procedures, and only a few studies have sought to improve our understanding of the nonlinear relationships that underlie LULC change. Many CA models lack the ability to simulate the detailed patch evolution of multiple land use types. This study introduces a patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model that integrates a land expansion analysis strategy and a CA model based on multi-type random patch seeds. These were used to understand the drivers of land expansion and to investigate the landscape dynamics in Wuhan, China. The proposed model achieved a higher simulation accuracy and more similar landscape pattern metrics to the true landscape than other CA models tested. The land expansion analysis strategy also uncovered some underlying transition rules, such as that grassland is most likely to be found where it is not strongly impacted by human activities, and that deciduous forest areas tend to grow adjacent to arterial roads. We also projected the structure of land use under different optimizing scenarios for 2035 by combining the proposed model with multi-objective programming. The results indicate that the proposed model can help policymakers to manage future land use dynamics and so to realize more sustainable land use patterns for future development. Software for PLUS has been made available at https://github.com/HPSCIL/Patch-generating_Land_Use_Simulation_Model

Unified dynamic approach for simulating quantum tunneling and thermionic emission at metal/organic interface

Injection from metallic electrodes serves as a main channel of charge generation in organic semiconducting devices and the quantum effect is normally regarded to be essential. We develop a dynamic approach based upon the surface hopping (SH) algorithm and classical device modeling, by which both quantum tunneling and thermionic emission of charge carrier injection at metal/organic interfaces are concurrently investigated. The injected charges from metallic electrode are observed to quickly spread onto the organic molecules following by an accumulation close to the interface induced by the built-in electric field, exhibiting a transition from delocalization to localization. We compare the Ehrenfest dynamics on mean-field level and the SH algorithm by simulating the temperature dependence of charge injection dynamics, and it is found that the former one leads to an improper result that the injection efficiency decreases with increasing temperature at room-temperature regime while SH results are credible. The relationship between injected charges and the applied bias voltage suggests it is the quantum tunneling that dominates the low-threshold injection characteristics in molecular crystals, which is further supported by the calculation results of small entropy change during the injection processes. An optimum interfacial width for charge injection efficiency at the interface is also quantified and can be utilized to understand the role of interfacial buffer layer in practical devices.

Practical Option Valuations of Futures Contracts with Negative Underlying Prices

Here we propose two alternatives to Black 76 to value European option future contracts in which the underlying market prices can be negative or mean reverting. The two proposed models are Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) and continuous time GARCH (generalized autoregressive conditionally heteroscedastic). We then analyse the values and compare them with Black 76, the most commonly used model, when the underlying market prices are positive

Visibility-aware Multi-view Stereo Network

Learning-based multi-view stereo (MVS) methods have demonstrated promising results. However, very few existing networks explicitly take the pixel-wise visibility into consideration, resulting in erroneous cost aggregation from occluded pixels. In this paper, we explicitly infer and integrate the pixel-wise occlusion information in the MVS network via the matching uncertainty estimation. The pair-wise uncertainty map is jointly inferred with the pair-wise depth map, which is further used as weighting guidance during the multi-view cost volume fusion. As such, the adverse influence of occluded pixels is suppressed in the cost fusion. The proposed framework Vis-MVSNet significantly improves depth accuracies in the scenes with severe occlusion. Extensive experiments are performed on DTU, BlendedMVS, and Tanks and Temples datasets to justify the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Sharp stability for the interaction energy

This paper is devoted to stability estimates for the interaction energy with strictly radially decreasing interaction potentials, such as the Coulomb and Riesz potentials. For a general density function, we first prove a stability estimate in terms of the $L^1$ asymmetry of the density, extending some previous results by Burchard-Chambers, Frank-Lieb and Fusco-Pratelli for characteristic functions. We also obtain a stability estimate in terms of the 2-Wasserstein distance between the density and its radial decreasing rearrangement. Finally, we consider the special case of Newtonian potential, and address a conjecture by Guo on the stability for the Coulomb energy.

Learning Stereo Matchability in Disparity Regression Networks

Learning-based stereo matching has recently achieved promising results, yet still suffers difficulties in establishing reliable matches in weakly matchable regions that are textureless, non-Lambertian, or occluded. In this paper, we address this challenge by proposing a stereo matching network that considers pixel-wise matchability. Specifically, the network jointly regresses disparity and matchability maps from 3D probability volume through expectation and entropy operations. Next, a learned attenuation is applied as the robust loss function to alleviate the influence of weakly matchable pixels in the training. Finally, a matchability-aware disparity refinement is introduced to improve the depth inference in weakly matchable regions. The proposed deep stereo matchability (DSM) framework can improve the matching result or accelerate the computation while still guaranteeing the quality. Moreover, the DSM framework is portable to many recent stereo networks. Extensive experiments are conducted on Scene Flow and KITTI stereo datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework over the state-of-the-art learning-based stereo methods.

Pricing Options Under Rough Volatility with Backward SPDEs

In this paper, we study the option pricing problems for rough volatility models. As the framework is non-Markovian, the value function for a European option is not deterministic; rather, it is random and satisfies a backward stochastic partial differential equation (BSPDE). The existence and uniqueness of weak solution is proved for general nonlinear BSPDEs with unbounded random leading coefficients whose connections with certain forward-backward stochastic differential equations are derived as well. These BSPDEs are then used to approximate American option prices. A deep leaning-based method is also investigated for the numerical approximations to such BSPDEs and associated non-Markovian pricing problems. Finally, the examples of rough Bergomi type are numerically computed for both European and American options.

Anomalies of weight-based coherence measure and mixed maximally coherent states

As an analogy of best separable approximation (BSA) in the framework of entanglement theory, here we concentrate on the notion of best incoherent approximation, with application to characterizing and quantifying quantum coherence. From both analytical and numerical perspectives, we have demonstrated that the weight-based coherence measure displays some unusual properties, in sharp contrast to other popular coherence quantifiers. First, by deriving a closed formula for qubit states, we have showed the weight-based coherence measure exhibits a rich (geometrical) structure even in this simplest case. Second, we have identified the existence of mixed maximally coherent states (MMCS) with respect to this coherence measure and discussed the characteristic feature of MMCS in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Especially, we present several important families of MMCS by gaining insights from the numerical simulations. Moreover, it is pointed out that some considerations in this work can be generalized to general convex resource theories and a numerical method of improving the computational efficiency for finding the BSA is also discussed.

ASLFeat: Learning Local Features of Accurate Shape and Localization

This work focuses on mitigating two limitations in the joint learning of local feature detectors and descriptors. First, the ability to estimate the local shape (scale, orientation, etc.) of feature points is often neglected during dense feature extraction, while the shape-awareness is crucial to acquire stronger geometric invariance. Second, the localization accuracy of detected keypoints is not sufficient to reliably recover camera geometry, which has become the bottleneck in tasks such as 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we present ASLFeat, with three light-weight yet effective modifications to mitigate above issues. First, we resort to deformable convolutional networks to densely estimate and apply local transformation. Second, we take advantage of the inherent feature hierarchy to restore spatial resolution and low-level details for accurate keypoint localization. Finally, we use a peakiness measurement to relate feature responses and derive more indicative detection scores. The effect of each modification is thoroughly studied, and the evaluation is extensively conducted across a variety of practical scenarios. State-of-the-art results are reported that demonstrate the superiority of our methods.

Chemotaxis and Reactions in Biology

Chemotaxis plays a crucial role in a variety of processes in biology and ecology. Quite often it acts to improve efficiency of biological reactions. One example is the immune system signalling, where infected tissues release chemokines attracting monocytes to fight invading bacteria. Another example is reproduction, where eggs release pheromones that attract sperm. A macro scale example is flower scent appealing to pollinators. In this paper we consider a system of PDE designed to model such processes. Our interest is to quantify the effect of chemotaxis on reaction rates compared to pure reaction-diffusion. We limit consideration to surface chemotaxis, which is well motivated from the point of view of many applications. Our results provide the first insight into situations where chemotaxis can be crucial for reaction success, and where its effect is likely to be limited. The proofs are based on new analytical tools; a significant part of the paper is dedicated to building up the linear machinery that can be useful in more general settings. In particular we establish precise estimates on the rates of convergence to ground state for a class of Fokker-Planck operators with potentials that grow at a logarithmic rate at infinity. These estimates are made possible by a new sharp weak weighted Poincaré inequality improving in particular a result of Bobkov and Ledoux.
