Orchestrating Joint Offloading and Scheduling for Low-Latency Edge SLAM

Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (vSLAM) is a prevailing technology for many emerging robotic applications. Achieving real-time SLAM on mobile robotic systems with limited computational resources is challenging because the complexity of SLAM algorithms increases over time. This restriction can be lifted by offloading computations to edge servers, forming the emerging paradigm of edge-assisted SLAM. Nevertheless, the exogenous and stochastic input processes affect the dynamics of the edge-assisted SLAM system. Moreover, the requirements of clients on SLAM metrics change over time, exerting implicit and time-varying effects on the system. In this paper, we aim to push the limit beyond existing edge-assist SLAM by proposing a new architecture that can handle the input-driven processes and also satisfy clients' implicit and time-varying requirements. The key innovations of our work involve a regional feature prediction method for importance-aware local data processing, a configuration adaptation policy that integrates data compression/decompression and task offloading, and an input-dependent learning framework for task scheduling with constraint satisfaction. Extensive experiments prove that our architecture improves pose estimation accuracy and saves up to 47% of communication costs compared with a popular edge-assisted SLAM system, as well as effectively satisfies the clients' requirements.

Memory Helps, but Confabulation Misleads: Understanding Streaming Events in Videos with MLLMs

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have demonstrated strong performance in understanding videos holistically, yet their ability to process streaming videos-videos are treated as a sequence of visual events-remains underexplored. Intuitively, leveraging past events as memory can enrich contextual and temporal understanding of the current event. In this paper, we show that leveraging memories as contexts helps MLLMs better understand video events. However, because such memories rely on predictions of preceding events, they may contain misinformation, leading to confabulation and degraded performance. To address this, we propose a confabulation-aware memory modification method that mitigates confabulated memory for memory-enhanced event understanding.

Fast spin precession and strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in ferrimagnetic Mn4N thin films improved by Pd buffer layer

Ferrimagnets take the advantages of both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets making them promise for spintronic applications. Here we prepared ferrimagnetic Mn4N thin films with high Curie temperature and investigated the crystalline structure and magnetic properties affected by the Pd buffer layer. We demonstrated that both crystalline quality and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of Mn4N thin films are enhanced significantly due to the relaxation of tensile stress induced by the Pd buffer layer. We also demonstrated a fast spin precession at room temperature, almost 100 GHz, in Mn4N thin films. With the characteristics of high thermal stability, enhanced PMA by buffer layer and fast spin precession, Mn4N thin film is a promising material for spintronic applications.

Peak current reduction in presence of RF phase modulation in the dual RF system

High harmonic cavities are widely used in electron storage rings to lengthen the bunch, thereby enhancing the Touschek lifetime, reducing the IBS effect, as well as providing Landau damping. When the RF phase is modulated in such a dual-RF system, simulations reveal that the peak current can be further reduced. This paper presents the simulation results and explains the underlying mechanism.

Tunable cavity coupling to spin defects in 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator platform

Silicon carbide (SiC) has attracted significant attention as a promising quantum material due to its ability to host long-lived, optically addressable color centers with solid-state photonic interfaces. The CMOS compatibility of 4H-SiCOI (silicon-carbide-on-insulator) makes it an ideal platform for integrated quantum photonic devices and circuits. While micro-ring cavities have been extensively studied in SiC and other materials, the integration of 4H-SiC spin defects into these critical structures, along with continuous mode tunability, remains unexplored. In this work, we demonstrate the integration of PL4 divacancy spin defects into tunable micro-ring cavities in scalable thin-film 4H-SiC nanophotonics. Comparing on- and off-resonance conditions, we observed an enhancement of the Purcell factor by approximately 5.0. This enhancement effectively confined coherent photons within the coupled waveguide, leading to a twofold increase in the ODMR (optically detected magnetic resonance) contrast and coherent control of PL4 spins. These advancements lay the foundation for developing SiC-based quantum photonic circuits.

Listening to Patients: A Framework of Detecting and Mitigating Patient Misreport for Medical Dialogue Generation

Medical Dialogue Systems aim to provide automated healthcare support through patient-agent conversations. Previous efforts typically regard patients as ideal users -- one who accurately and consistently reports their health conditions. However, in reality, patients often misreport their symptoms, leading to discrepancies between their reports and actual health conditions. Overlooking patient misreport will affect the quality of healthcare consultations provided by MDS. To address this issue, we argue that MDS should ''listen to patients'' and tackle two key challenges: how to detect and mitigate patient misreport effectively. In this work, we propose PaMis, a framework of detecting and mitigating Patient Misreport for medical dialogue generation. PaMis first constructs dialogue entity graphs, then detects patient misreport based on graph entropy, and mitigates patient misreport by formulating clarifying questions. Experiments indicate that PaMis effectively enhances medical response generation, enabling models like GPT-4 to detect and mitigate patient misreports, and provide high-quality healthcare assistance.

Reionization relics in the cross-correlation between the Ly$α$ forest and 21 cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization era

The tumultuous effects of ultraviolet photons that source cosmic reionization, the subsequent compression and shock-heating of low-density regions, and the modulation of baryons in shallow potential wells induced by the passage of ionization fronts, collectively introduce perturbations to the evolution of the intergalactic medium in the post-reionization era. These enduring fluctuations persist deep into the post-reionization era, casting a challenge upon precision cosmology endeavors targeting tracers in this cosmic era. Simultaneously, these relics from reionization also present a unique opportunity to glean insights into the astrophysics that govern the epoch of reionization. In this work, we propose a first study of the cross-correlation of \lya forest and 21 cm intensity mapping, accounting for the repercussions of inhomogeneous reionization in the post-reionization era. We investigate the ability of SKA $\times$ DESI-like, SKA $\times$ MUST-like, and PUMA $\times$ MUST-like instrumental setups to achieve a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the redshift range $3.5 \leq z \leq 4$. Moreover, we assess how alterations in integration time, survey area, and reionization scenarios impact the SNR. Furthermore, we forecast the cross-correlation's potential to constrain cosmological parameters under varying assumptions: considering or disregarding reionization relics, marginalizing over reionization astrophysics, and assuming perfect knowledge of reionization. Notably, our findings underscore the remarkable capability of a futuristic PUMA $\times$ MUST-like setup, with a modest 100-hour integration time over a 100 sq. deg. survey, to constrain the ionization efficiency error to $σ_ζ= 3.42 $.

Room-Temperature entangled quantum processor on integrated semiconductor photonics platform

The rise of the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator (SiCOI) platform marks a promising pathway towards the realization of monolithic quantum photonic networks. However, the challenge of establishing room-temperature entangled registers on these integrated photonics platforms remains unresolved. Herein, we demonstrate the first entangled processor on the SiCOI platform. We show that both deterministic generation of single divacancy electron spins and near-unity spin initialization of a single $^{13}$C nuclear spin can be achieved on SiCOI at room temperature. Besides coherently manipulating the single nuclear spin, a maximally entangled state with a fidelity of 0.89 has been prepared on this CMOS-compatible semiconductor-integrated photonics system. This work establishes the foundation for compact and on-chip solutions within existing defect-based computing and sensing protocols, positioning the SiCOI platform as the most promising candidate for integrated monolithic quantum photonic networks.

Synergistic Interplay of Large Language Model and Digital Twin for Autonomous Optical Networks: Field Demonstrations

The development of large language models (LLM) has revolutionized various fields and is anticipated to drive the advancement of autonomous systems. In the context of autonomous optical networks, creating a high-level cognitive agent in the control layer remains a challenge. However, LLM is primarily developed for natural language processing tasks, rendering them less effective in predicting the physical dynamics of optical communications. Moreover, optical networks demand rigorous stability, where direct deployment of strategies generated from LLM poses safety concerns. In this paper, a digital twin (DT)-enhanced LLM scheme is proposed to facilitate autonomous optical networks. By leveraging monitoring data and advanced models, the DT of optical networks can accurately characterize their physical dynamics, furnishing LLMs with dynamic-updated information for reliable decision-making. Prior to deployment, the generated strategies from LLM can be pre-verified in the DT platform, which also provides feedback to the LLM for further refinement of strategies. The synergistic interplay between DT and LLM for autonomous optical networks is demonstrated through three scenarios: performance optimization under dynamic loadings in an experimental C+L-band long-haul transmission link, protection switching for device upgrading in a field-deployed six-node mesh network, and performance recovery after fiber cuts in a field-deployed C+L-band transmission link.

Incentives for Early Arrival in Cost Sharing

In cooperative games, we study how values created or costs incurred by a coalition are shared among the members within it, and the players may join the coalition in a online manner such as investors invest a startup. Recently, Ge et al. [10] proposed a new property called incentives for early arrival (I4EA) in such games, which says that the online allocation of values or costs should incentivize agents to join early in order to prevent mutual strategic waiting. Ideally, the allocation should also be fair, so that agents arriving in an order uniformly at random should expect to get/pay their Shapley values. Ge et al. [10] showed that not all monotone value functions admit such mechanisms in online value sharing games. In this work, we show a sharp contrast in online cost sharing games. We construct a mechanism with all the properties mentioned above, for every monotone cost function. To achieve this, we first solve 0-1 valued cost sharing games with a novel mechanism called Shapley-fair shuffle cost sharing mechanism (SFS-CS), and then extend SFS-CS to a family called generalized Shapley-fair shuffle cost sharing mechanisms (GSFS-CS). The critical technique we invented here is a mapping from one arrival order to another order so that we can directly apply marginal cost allocation on the shuffled orders to satisfy the properties. Finally, we solve general valued cost functions, by decomposing them into 0-1 valued functions in an online fashion.

Multiple conditional randomization tests for lagged and spillover treatment effects

We consider the problem of constructing multiple independent conditional randomization tests using a single dataset. Because the tests are independent, the randomization p-values can be interpreted individually and combined using standard methods for multiple testing. We give a simple, sequential construction of such tests, and then discuss its application to three problems: Rosenbaum's evidence factors for observational studies, lagged treatment effect in stepped-wedge trials, and spillover effect in randomized trials with interference. We compare the proposed approach with some existing methods using simulated and real datasets. Finally, we establish a more general sufficient condition for independent conditional randomization tests.

Joint Trajectory Replanning for Mars Ascent Vehicle under Propulsion System Faults: A Suboptimal Learning-Based Warm-Start Approach

During the Mars ascent vehicle (MAV) launch missions, when encountering a thrust drop type of propulsion system fault problem, the general trajectory replanning methods relying on step-by-step judgments may fail to make timely decisions, potentially leading to mission failure. This paper proposes a suboptimal joint trajectory replanning (SJTR) method, which formulates the joint optimization problem of target orbit and flight trajectory after a fault within a convex optimization framework. By incorporating penalty coefficients for terminal constraints, the optimization solution adheres to the orbit redecision principle, thereby avoiding complex decision-making processes and resulting in a concise and rapid solution to the replanning problem. A learning-based warm-start scheme is proposed in conjunction with the designed SJTR method. Offline, a deep neural network (DNN) is trained using a dataset generated by the SJTR method. Online, the DNN provides initial guesses for the time optimization variables based on the current fault situation, enhancing the solving efficiency and reliability of the algorithm. Numerical simulations of the MAV flight scenario under the thrust drop faults are performed, and Monte Carlo experiments and case studies across all orbit types demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

WebPilot: A Versatile and Autonomous Multi-Agent System for Web Task Execution with Strategic Exploration

LLM-based autonomous agents often fail to execute complex web tasks that require dynamic interaction due to the inherent uncertainty and complexity of these environments. Existing LLM-based web agents typically rely on rigid, expert-designed policies specific to certain states and actions, which lack the flexibility and generalizability needed to adapt to unseen tasks. In contrast, humans excel by exploring unknowns, continuously adapting strategies, and resolving ambiguities through exploration. To emulate human-like adaptability, web agents need strategic exploration and complex decision-making. Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) is well-suited for this, but classical MCTS struggles with vast action spaces, unpredictable state transitions, and incomplete information in web tasks. In light of this, we develop WebPilot, a multi-agent system with a dual optimization strategy that improves MCTS to better handle complex web environments. Specifically, the Global Optimization phase involves generating a high-level plan by breaking down tasks into manageable subtasks and continuously refining this plan, thereby focusing the search process and mitigating the challenges posed by vast action spaces in classical MCTS. Subsequently, the Local Optimization phase executes each subtask using a tailored MCTS designed for complex environments, effectively addressing uncertainties and managing incomplete information. Experimental results on WebArena and MiniWoB++ demonstrate the effectiveness of WebPilot. Notably, on WebArena, WebPilot achieves SOTA performance with GPT-4, achieving a 93% relative increase in success rate over the concurrent tree search-based method. WebPilot marks a significant advancement in general autonomous agent capabilities, paving the way for more advanced and reliable decision-making in practical environments.

Optimal Diffusion Auctions

Diffusion auction design is a new trend in mechanism design for which the main goal is to incentivize existing buyers to invite new buyers, who are their neighbors on a social network, to join an auction even though they are competitors. With more buyers, a diffusion auction will be able to give a more efficient allocation and receive higher revenue. Existing studies have proposed many interesting diffusion auctions to attract more buyers, but the seller's revenue is not optimized. Hence, in this study, we investigate what optimal revenue the seller can achieve by attracting more buyers. Different from the traditional setting, the revenue that can be achieved in a diffusion auction highly relies on the structure of the network. Hence, we focus on optimal auctions with given classes of underlying networks. We propose a class of mechanisms, where for any given structure, an optimal diffusion mechanism can be found. We point out that it implies an idea of "reserve structure". Moreover, we show that an optimal mechanism that handles all structures does not exist. Therefore, we also propose mechanisms that have bounded approximations of the optimal revenue in all structures.

Robust Principal Component Analysis via Discriminant Sample Weight Learning

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a classical feature extraction method, but it may be adversely affected by outliers, resulting in inaccurate learning of the projection matrix. This paper proposes a robust method to estimate both the data mean and the PCA projection matrix by learning discriminant sample weights from data containing outliers. Each sample in the dataset is assigned a weight, and the proposed algorithm iteratively learns the weights, the mean, and the projection matrix, respectively. Specifically, when the mean and the projection matrix are available, via fine-grained analysis of outliers, a weight for each sample is learned hierarchically so that outliers have small weights while normal samples have large weights. With the learned weights available, a weighted optimization problem is solved to estimate both the data mean and the projection matrix. Because the learned weights discriminate outliers from normal samples, the adverse influence of outliers is mitigated due to the corresponding small weights. Experiments on toy data, UCI dataset, and face dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in estimating the mean and the projection matrix from the data containing outliers.

ProCom: A Few-shot Targeted Community Detection Algorithm

Targeted community detection aims to distinguish a particular type of community in the network. This is an important task with a lot of real-world applications, e.g., identifying fraud groups in transaction networks. Traditional community detection methods fail to capture the specific features of the targeted community and detect all types of communities indiscriminately. Semi-supervised community detection algorithms, emerged as a feasible alternative, are inherently constrained by their limited adaptability and substantial reliance on a large amount of labeled data, which demands extensive domain knowledge and manual effort. In this paper, we address the aforementioned weaknesses in targeted community detection by focusing on few-shot scenarios. We propose ProCom, a novel framework that extends the ``pre-train, prompt'' paradigm, offering a low-resource, high-efficiency, and transferable solution. Within the framework, we devise a dual-level context-aware pre-training method that fosters a deep understanding of latent communities in the network, establishing a rich knowledge foundation for downstream task. In the prompt learning stage, we reformulate the targeted community detection task into pre-training objectives, allowing the extraction of specific knowledge relevant to the targeted community to facilitate effective and efficient inference. By leveraging both the general community knowledge acquired during pre-training and the specific insights gained from the prompt communities, ProCom exhibits remarkable adaptability across different datasets. We conduct extensive experiments on five benchmarks to evaluate the ProCom framework, demonstrating its SOTA performance under few-shot scenarios, strong efficiency, and transferability across diverse datasets.
