Relation-Aware Neighborhood Matching Model for Entity Alignment

Entity alignment which aims at linking entities with the same meaning from different knowledge graphs (KGs) is a vital step for knowledge fusion. Existing research focused on learning embeddings of entities by utilizing structural information of KGs for entity alignment. These methods can aggregate information from neighboring nodes but may also bring noise from neighbors. Most recently, several researchers attempted to compare neighboring nodes in pairs to enhance the entity alignment. However, they ignored the relations between entities which are also important for neighborhood matching. In addition, existing methods paid less attention to the positive interactions between the entity alignment and the relation alignment. To deal with these issues, we propose a novel Relation-aware Neighborhood Matching model named RNM for entity alignment. Specifically, we propose to utilize the neighborhood matching to enhance the entity alignment. Besides comparing neighbor nodes when matching neighborhood, we also try to explore useful information from the connected relations. Moreover, an iterative framework is designed to leverage the positive interactions between the entity alignment and the relation alignment in a semi-supervised manner. Experimental results on three real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed model RNM performs better than state-of-the-art methods.

Recursive Optimization of Finite Blocklength Allocation to Mitigate Age-of-Information Outage

As an emerging metric for the timeliness of information delivery, Age-of-Information (AoI) raises a special interest in the research area of tolerance-critical communications, wherein sufficiently short blocklength is usually adopted as an essential requirement. However, the interplay between AoI and finite blocklength is scantly treated. This paper studies the occurrence of high AoI, i.e., AoI outage, in TDMA systems with respect to the blocklength allocation among users. A Markov Decision Process model is set up for the problem, which enables a static state analysis, and therewith a policy iteration approach to improve the AoI robustness is proposed. The burstiness of outages is also analyzed to provide additional insights into this problem in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime. It is shown that, different from average AoI optimizations, a risk-sensitive approach is significantly beneficial for AoI outage optimizations, on account of the FBL regime.

Robustness Analysis of Networked Control Systems with Aging Status

As an emerging metric of communication systems, Age of Information (AoI) has been derived to have a critical impact in networked control systems with unreliable information links. This work sets up a novel model of outage probability in a loosely constrained control system as a function of the feedback AoI, and conducts numerical simulations to validate the model.

Representation Learning with Ordered Relation Paths for Knowledge Graph Completion

Incompleteness is a common problem for existing knowledge graphs (KGs), and the completion of KG which aims to predict links between entities is challenging. Most existing KG completion methods only consider the direct relation between nodes and ignore the relation paths which contain useful information for link prediction. Recently, a few methods take relation paths into consideration but pay less attention to the order of relations in paths which is important for reasoning. In addition, these path-based models always ignore nonlinear contributions of path features for link prediction. To solve these problems, we propose a novel KG completion method named OPTransE. Instead of embedding both entities of a relation into the same latent space as in previous methods, we project the head entity and the tail entity of each relation into different spaces to guarantee the order of relations in the path. Meanwhile, we adopt a pooling strategy to extract nonlinear and complex features of different paths to further improve the performance of link prediction. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets show that the proposed model OPTransE performs better than state-of-the-art methods.

Optimal Blocklength Allocation towards Reduced Age of Information in Wireless Sensor Networks

The freshness or timeliness of data at server is a significant key performance indicator of sensor networks, especially in tolerance critical applications such as factory automation. As an effective and intuitive measurement to data timeliness, the metric of Age of Information (AoI) has attracted an intensive recent interest of research. This paper initiates a study on the AoI of wireless sensor networks working in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime as a resource allocation problem, and proposes to minimize the long-term discounted system AoI as a Markov decision process (MDP). The proposed method with its optimum solved by Reinforced Learning technique is verified by simulations to outperform benchmarks, including the conventional error rate minimizing policy.

An Interpretable Generative Model for Handwritten Digit Image Synthesis

An interpretable generative model for handwritten digits synthesis is proposed in this work. Modern image generative models, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), are trained by backpropagation (BP). The training process is complex and the underlying mechanism is difficult to explain. We propose an interpretable multi-stage PCA method to achieve the same goal and use handwritten digit images synthesis as an illustrative example. First, we derive principal-component-analysis-based (PCA-based) transform kernels at each stage based on the covariance of its inputs. This results in a sequence of transforms that convert input images of correlated pixels to spectral vectors of uncorrelated components. In other words, it is a whitening process. Then, we can synthesize an image based on random vectors and multi-stage transform kernels through a coloring process. The generative model is a feedforward (FF) design since no BP is used in model parameter determination. Its design complexity is significantly lower, and the whole design process is explainable. Finally, we design an FF generative model using the MNIST dataset, compare synthesis results with those obtained by state-of-the-art GAN and VAE methods, and show that the proposed generative model achieves comparable performance.

Demonstration of liquid crystal for barocaloric cooling application

Current vapor-compression technology is based on the gas-liquid transition of hazardous gas. The alternative cooling technology focuses on the solid caloric material. A new liquid barocaloric material, i.e. the liquid crystal, is proved to be potential for cooling application primarily (based on other literatures). Its phase transition needs a small stress (tens of MPa) and can be operated near room temperature. It has a large entropy change of ~200 J.K-1.kg-1 (0.2 J.K-1.cm-1). There is no breakage problem due to its liquid form. It will provide the advantage for some unique cooling application cases comparing with solid caloric material. Moreover, this material is sustainable and non-toxic, which can meet the original intention of the alternative cooling technology.

A Parallel Min-Cut Algorithm using Iteratively Reweighted Least Squares

We present a parallel algorithm for the undirected $s,t$-mincut problem with floating-point valued weights. Our overarching algorithm uses an iteratively reweighted least squares framework. This generates a sequence of Laplacian linear systems, which we solve using parallel matrix algorithms. Our overall implementation is up to 30-times faster than a serial solver when using 128 cores.

Erasure coding for fault oblivious linear system solvers

Dealing with hardware and software faults is an important problem as parallel and distributed systems scale to millions of processing cores and wide area networks. Traditional methods for dealing with faults include checkpoint-restart, active replicas, and deterministic replay. Each of these techniques has associated resource overheads and constraints. In this paper, we propose an alternate approach to dealing with faults, based on input augmentation. This approach, which is an algorithmic analog of erasure coded storage, applies a minimally modified algorithm on the augmented input to produce an augmented output. The execution of such an algorithm proceeds completely oblivious to faults in the system. In the event of one or more faults, the real solution is recovered using a rapid reconstruction method from the augmented output. We demonstrate this approach on the problem of solving sparse linear systems using a conjugate gradient solver. We present input augmentation and output recovery techniques. Through detailed experiments, we show that our approach can be made oblivious to a large number of faults with low computational overhead. Specifically, we demonstrate cases where a single fault can be corrected with less than 10% overhead in time, and even in extreme cases (fault rates of 20%), our approach is able to compute a solution with reasonable overhead. These results represent a significant improvement over the state of the art.

EigenGP: Sparse Gaussian process models with data-dependent eigenfunctions

Gaussian processes (GPs) provide a nonparametric representation of functions. However, classical GP inference suffers from high computational cost and it is difficult to design nonstationary GP priors in practice. In this paper, we propose a sparse Gaussian process model, EigenGP, based on the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) expansion of a GP prior. We use the Nystrom approximation to obtain data dependent eigenfunctions and select these eigenfunctions by evidence maximization. This selection reduces the number of eigenfunctions in our model and provides a nonstationary covariance function. To handle nonlinear likelihoods, we develop an efficient expectation propagation (EP) inference algorithm, and couple it with expectation maximization for eigenfunction selection. Because the eigenfunctions of a Gaussian kernel are associated with clusters of samples - including both the labeled and unlabeled - selecting relevant eigenfunctions enables EigenGP to conduct semi-supervised learning. Our experimental results demonstrate improved predictive performance of EigenGP over alternative state-of-the-art sparse GP and semisupervised learning methods for regression, classification, and semisupervised classification.
