Intertwined dipolar and multipolar order in the triangular-lattice magnet TmMgGaO$_4$

A phase transition is often accompanied by the appearance of an order parameter and symmetry breaking. Certain magnetic materials exhibit exotic hidden-order phases, in which the order parameters are not directly accessible to conventional magnetic measurements. Thus, experimental identification and theoretical understanding of a hidden order are difficult. Here we combine neutron scattering and thermodynamic probes to study the newly discovered rare-earth triangular-lattice magnet TmMgGaO$_4$. Clear magnetic Bragg peaks at K points are observed in the elastic neutron diffraction measurements. More interesting, however, is the observation of sharp and highly dispersive spin excitations that cannot be explained by a magnetic dipolar order, but instead is the direct consequence of the underlying multipolar order that is "hidden" in the neutron diffraction experiments. We demonstrate that the observed unusual spin correlations and thermodynamics can be accurately described by a transverse field Ising model on the triangular lattice with an intertwined dipolar and ferro-multipolar order.

Fractionalized excitations in the partially magnetized spin liquid candidate YbMgGaO4

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are exotic states of matter characterized by emergent gauge structures and fractionalized elementary excitations. The recently discovered triangular lattice antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising QSL candidate, and the nature of its ground state is still under debate. Here, we use neutron scattering to study the spin excitations in YbMgGaO$_4$ under various magnetic fields. Our data reveal a dispersive spin excitation continuum with clear upper and lower excitation edges under a weak magnetic field ($H=2.5$ T). Moreover, a spectral crossing emerges at the $Γ$ point at the Zeeman-split energy. The corresponding redistribution of the spectral weight and its field-dependent evolution are consistent with the theoretical prediction based on the inter-band and intra-band spinon particle-hole excitations associated with the Zeeman-split spinon bands, implying the presence of fractionalized excitations and spinon Fermi surfaces in the partially magnetized YbMgGaO$_4$.

Selective measurements of intertwined multipolar orders: non-Kramers doublets on a triangular lattice

Motivated by the rapid experimental progress on the spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulators, we propose and study a generic spin model that describes the interaction between the non-Kramers doublets on a triangular lattice and is relevant for triangular lattice rare-earth magnets. We predict that the system supports both pure quadrupolar orders and intertwined multipolar orders in the phase diagram. Besides the multipolar orders, we explore the magnetic excitations to reveal the dynamic properties of the systems. Due to the peculiar properties of the non-Kramers doublets and the selective coupling to the magnetic field, we further study the magnetization process of the system in the magnetic field. We point out the selective measurements of the static and dynamic properties of the intertwined multipolarness in the neutron scattering, NMR and $μ$SR probes and predict the experimental consequences. The relevance to the existing materials such as TmMgGaO$_{4}$, Pr-based and Tb-based magnets, and many ternary chalcogenides is discussed. Our results illustrate the rich physics and the promising direction in the interplay between strong spin-orbit-entangled multipole moments and the geometrical frustration.

Evidence for a spinon Fermi surface in a triangular lattice quantum spin liquid candidate

A quantum spin liquid is an exotic quantum state of matter in which spins are highly entangled and remain disordered down to zero temperature. Such a state of matter is potentially relevant to high-temperature superconductivity and quantum-information applications, and experimental identification of a quantum spin liquid state is of fundamental importance for our understanding of quantum matter. Theoretical studies have proposed various quantum-spin-liquid ground states, most of which are characterized by exotic spin excitations with fractional quantum numbers (termed `spinon'). Here, we report neutron scattering measurements that reveal broad spin excitations covering a wide region of the Brillouin zone in a triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO4. The observed diffusive spin excitation persists at the lowest measured energy and shows a clear upper excitation edge, which is consistent with the particle-hole excitation of a spinon Fermi surface. Our results therefore point to a QSL state with a spinon Fermi surface in YbMgGaO4 that has a perfect spin-1/2 triangular lattice as in the original proposal of quantum spin liquids.

Kitaev materials beyond iridates: order by quantum disorder and Weyl magnons in rare-earth double perovskites

Motivated by the experiments on the rare-earth double perovskites, we propose a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model to describe the generic interaction between the spin-orbit-entangled Kramers' doublets of the rare-earth moments. We carry out a systematic analysis of the mean-field phase diagram of this new model. In the phase diagram, there exist large regions with a continuous U(1) or O(3) degeneracy. Since no symmetry of the model protects such a continuous degeneracy, we predict that the quantum fluctuation lifts the continuous degeneracy and favors various magnetic orders in the phase diagram. From this order by quantum disorder mechanism, we further predict that the magnetic excitations of the resulting ordered phases are characterized by nearly gapless pseudo-Goldstone modes. We find that there exist Weyl magnon excitations for certain magnetic orders. We expect our prediction to inspire further study of Kitaev physics, the order by quantum disorder phenomenon and topological spin wave modes in the rare-earth magnets and the systems alike.

The effect of spin-orbit coupling on the effective-spin correlation in YbMgGaO4

Motivated by the recent experiments on the triangular lattice spin liquid YbMgGaO$_4$, we explore the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the effective-spin correlation of the Yb local moments. We point out the anisotropic interaction between the effective-spins on the nearest neighbor bonds is sufficient to reproduce the spin-wave dispersion of the fully polarized state in the presence of strong magnetic field normal to the triangular plane. We further evaluate the effective-spin correlation within the mean-field spherical approximation. We explicitly demonstrate that, the nearest-neighbor anisotropic effective-spin interaction, originating from the strong spin-orbit coupling, enhances the effective-spin correlation at the M points in the Brillouin zone. We identify these results as the strong evidence for the anisotropic interaction and the strong spin-orbit coupling in YbMgGaO$_4$.

Hidden multipolar orders of dipole-octupole doublets on a triangular lattice

Motivated by the recent development in strong spin-orbit-coupled materials, we consider the dipole-octupole doublets on the triangular lattice. We propose the most general interaction between these unusual local moments. Due to the spin-orbit entanglement and the special form of its wavefunction, the dipole-octupole doublet has a rather peculiar property under the lattice symmetry operation. As a result, the interaction is highly anisotropic in the pseudospin space, but remarkably, is uniform spatially. We analyze the ground state properties of this generic model and emphasize the hidden multipolar orders that emerge from the dipolar and octupolar interactions. We clarify the quantum mutual modulations between the dipolar and octupolar orders. We predict the experimental consequences of the multipolar orders and propose the rare-earth triangular materials as candidate systems for these unusual properties.

Weyl magnons in breathing pyrochlore antiferromagnets

Frustrated quantum magnets not only provide exotic ground states and unusual magnetic structures, but also support unconventional excitations in many cases. Using a physically relevant spin model for a breathing pyrochlore lattice, we discuss the presence of topological linear band crossings of magnons in antiferromagnets. These are the analogs of Weyl fermions in electronic systems, which we dub Weyl magnons. The bulk Weyl magnon implies the presence of chiral magnon surface states forming arcs at finite energy. We argue that such antiferromagnets present a unique example in which Weyl points can be manipulated in situ in the laboratory by applied fields. We discuss their appearance specifically in the breathing pyrochlore lattice, and give some general discussion of conditions to find Weyl magnons and how they may be probed experimentally. Our work may inspire a re-examination of the magnetic excitations in many magnetically ordered systems.

An anisotropic spin model of strong spin-orbit-coupled triangular antiferromagnets

Motivated by the recent experimental progress on the strong spin-orbit-coupled rare earth triangular antiferromagnet, we analyze the highly anisotropic spin model that describes the interaction between the spin-orbit-entangled Kramers' doublet local moments on the triangular lattice. We apply the Luttinger-Tisza method, the classical Monte Carlo simulation, and the self-consistent spin wave theory to analyze the anisotropic spin Hamiltonian. The classical phase diagram includes the 120-degree state and two distinct stripe ordered phases. The frustration is very strong and significantly suppresses the ordering temperature in the regimes close to the phase boundary between two ordered phases. Going beyond the semiclassical analysis, we include the quantum fluctuations of the spin moments within a self-consistent Dyson-Maleev spin-wave treatment. We find that the strong quantum fluctuations melt the magnetic order in the frustrated regions. We explore the magnetic excitations in the three different ordered phases as well as in strong magnetic fields. Our results provide a guidance for the future theoretical study of the generic model and are broadly relevant for strong spin-orbit-coupled triangular antiferromagnets such as YbMgGaO4, RCd3P3, RZn3P3, RCd3As3, RZn3As3, and R2O2CO3.

Exact solutions and spacetime singularities in nonlocal gravity

We give here a list of exact classical solutions of a large class of weakly nonlocal theories of gravity, which are unitary and super-renormalizable (or finite) at quantum level. It is explicitly shown that flat and Ricci-flat spacetimes as well as maximally symmetric manifolds are exact solutions of the equation of motion. Therefore, well-known physical spacetimes like Schwarzschild, Kerr, (Anti-) de Sitter serve as solutions for standard matter content. In dimension higher than four we can also have Anti-de Sitter solutions in the presence of positive cosmological constant. We pedagogically show how to obtain these exact solutions. Furthermore, for another version of the theory, written in the Weyl basis, Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetimes are also exact solutions, when the matter content is given by conformal matter (radiation). We also comment on the presence of singularities and possible resolution of them in finite and conformally invariant theories. "Delocalization" is proposed as a way to solve the black hole singularity problem. In order to solve the problem of cosmological singularities it seems crucial to have a conformally invariant or asymptotically free quantum gravitational theory.
