Universal Scaling of the Minimum Error Probability in Qualification of Quantum States

Qualification of quantum states judges which of two sets of quantum states an unknown state lies in, where the two sets are labeled by two distinct parameter regions. We formulate this problem as a composite quantum hypothesis test and uncover universal scaling laws for the minimum error probability for $N$ copies. Taking polarization-direction qualification and purity qualification as examples, we show that the $N$-copy permutation symmetry and the geometric symmetries of the parameter regions identify the optimal measurements and the "worst pairwise states". The minimum error probability scales as $N^{-3/2}\exp(-N\xi)$ for disjoint regions and as $(NF)^{-1/2}$ for adjacent regions, where $\xi$ and $F$ are the quantum Chernoff divergence and quantum Fisher information associated with the "worst pairwise states", respectively. With the minimum error probability serving as an order parameter, the transition between the scaling behaviors becomes a second-order phase transition as $N\to\infty$. Our approach determines whether a quantum state belongs to a given set without full state tomography, thereby enabling qualification of large ensembles using finite samples.

Mechanically Exfoliated Metallic Delafossite PdCoO2 Nanomembranes: Quantum Transport and Electrical Evaluation Toward Interconnect Applications

Metallic delafossite oxides have drawn attention for their ultralow resistivity and coherent electronic transport. However, mesoscopic transport studies are hindered by the limited access to high quality nanoscale devices. Here, we report single crystalline PdCoO2 nanomembranes, enabling exploration of quasi two dimensional (2D) transport. Shubnikov de Haas and Aharonov Bohm oscillations under different magnetic field orientations are observed at low temperatures, from which the electron effective mass and electron phase coherence length are extracted. Beyond quantum transport, the electrical performance of PdCoO2 toward interconnect applications is evaluated. A nearly thickness independent room temperature resistivity is observed for flakes down to 40 nm thickness. The nanomembranes exhibit a breakdown current density up to 113 MA cm-2, with excellent thermal stability and electromigration resistance. These results demonstrate that mechanically exfoliated PdCoO2 flakes preserve the high crystalline and electronic quality of bulk crystals in the quasi-2D limit, providing a useful platform for mesoscopic transport studies and interconnect applications.

Boundary Time Crystals: Beyond Mean-Field Theory

Boundary time crystals are a class of exotic dissipative quantum phases that spontaneously break continuous time-translation symmetry in the thermodynamic limit of open quantum systems. In finite-size systems, the long-time evolution of boundary time crystals exhibits decaying oscillations that cannot be captured by widely used mean-field theory. To address this issue, we develop an effective approach called the stroboscopic rotating wave approximation, which provides a well approximate state for the long-time evolution of boundary time crystals under strong driving. In this approach, the order parameter exhibits both a long-time decaying envelope governed by an effective Lindblad superoperator and short-time oscillations dominated by a reduced quantum dynamical semigroup. Our results reveal that the competition among dephasing processes along three distinct directions induces persistent oscillations, marking the emergence of the boundary time crystal phase. We obtain the analytical expressions for the steady-state density operator, the oscillation period, and the decay rate of the order parameter in the regime where the coherent energy splitting exceeds the dissipation rate. Our work provides a beyond-mean-field theoretical tool for studying the dynamics of periodically driven open quantum systems and understanding the formation of time crystals.

Tunable atomically enhanced moiré Berry curvatures in twisted triple bilayer graphene

We report a twisted triple bilayer graphene platform consisting of three units of Bernal bilayer graphene consecutively twisted at 1.49° and 1.68°. We demonstrate the atomic reconstruction between the two competing moiré superlattices strongly enhances the Berry curvature of each moiré band insulator state, characterized by measured strong nonlocal valley Hall effect that sensitively depends on the inter-moiré competition strength, tunable by manipulating the out-of-plane carrier distribution. Our study sheds light on the microscopic mechanism of atomic and electronic reconstruction in twisted multilayer systems, by systematically investigating transport signatures of moiré Berry curvature and its enhancement from moiré-of-moiré lattice reconstruction. We show that the reconstructed electronic band can be versatilely tuned by electrostatics, providing an approach toward engineering the band structure and its topology for a quantum material platform with designer electrical and optical properties.
