Null controllability of n-dimensional parabolic equations degenerated on partial boundary

This paper extends the Carleman estimates to high dimensional parabolic equations with highly degenerate symmetric coefficients on a bounded domain of Lipschitz boundary and use these estimates to study the controlla?bility the corresponding equations. Due to the nonsmoothness and degeneracy of boundary, the partial integration by parts in Carleman estimates have no meaning on the degenerate and nonsmooth parts of the boundary. To get around of this difficulty, we construct special weight function, and transform some integral terms in degenerate regions into a non-degenerate ones carefully so that the obtained Carleman estimates can still be used to the controllability problem. Our results includes some well-known works as some special cases as well as some interesting new examples.

Large parameter asymptotic analysis for homogeneous normalized random measures with independent increments

Homogeneous normalized random measures with independent increments (hNRMIs) represent a broad class of Bayesian nonparametric priors and thus are widely used. In this paper, we obtain the strong law of large numbers, the central limit theorem and the functional central limit theorem of hNRMIs when the concentration parameter $a$ approaches infinity. To quantify the convergence rate of the obtained central limit theorem, we further study the Berry-Esseen bound, which turns out to be of the form $O \left( \frac{1}{\sqrt{a}}\right)$. As an application of the central limit theorem, we present the functional delta method, which can be employed to obtain the limit of the quantile process of hNRMIs. As an illustration of the central limit theorems, we demonstrate the convergence numerically for the Dirichlet processes and the normalized inverse Gaussian processes with various choices of the concentration parameters.

Hyperbolic Anderson equations with general time-independent Gaussian noise: Stratonovich regime

In this paper, we investigate the hyperbolic Anderson equation generated by a time-independent Gaussian noise with two objectives: The solvability and intermittency. First, we prove that Dalang's condition is necessary and sufficient for existence of the solution. Second, we establish the precise long time and high moment asymptotics for the solution under the usual homogeneity assumption of the covariance of the Gaussian noise. Our approach is fundamentally different from the ones existing in literature. The main contributions in our approach include the representation of Stratonovich moment under Laplace transform via the moments of the Brownian motions in Gaussian potentials and some large deviation skills developed in dealing effectively with the Stratonovich chaos expansion.

Long time numerical stability of implicit schemes for stochastic heat equations

This paper studies the long time stability of both stochastic heat equations on a bounded domain driven by a correlated noise and their approximations. It is popular for researchers to prove the intermittency of the solution which means that the moments of solution to stochastic heat equation usually grow exponentially to infinite and this hints that the solution to stochastic heat equation is generally not stable in long time. However, quite surprisingly in this paper we show that when the domain is bounded and when the noise is not singular in spatial variables, the system can be long time stable and we also prove that we can approximate the solution by its finite dimensional spectral approximation which is also long time stable. The idea is to use eigenfunction expansion of the Laplacian on bounded domain. We also present numerical experiments which are consistent with our theoretical results.

The augmented weak sharpness of solution sets in equilibrium problems

This study delves into equilibrium problems, focusing on the identification of finite solutions for feasible solution sequences. We introduce an innovative extension of the weak sharp minimum concept from convex programming to equilibrium problems, coining this as weak sharpness for solution sets. Recognizing situations where the solution set may not exhibit weak sharpness, we propose an augmented mapping approach to mitigate this limitation. The core of our research is the formulation of augmented weak sharpness for the solution set, a comprehensive concept that encapsulates both weak sharpness and strong non-degeneracy within feasible solution sequences. Crucially, we identify a necessary and sufficient condition for the finite termination of these sequences under the premise of augmented weak sharpness for the solution set in equilibrium problems. This condition significantly broadens the scope of existing literature, which often assumes the solution set to be weakly sharp or strongly non-degenerate, especially in the context of mathematical programming and variational inequality problems. Our findings not only shed light on the termination conditions in equilibrium problems but also introduce a less stringent sufficient condition for the finite termination of various optimization algorithms. This research, therefore, makes a substantial contribution to the field by enhancing our understanding of termination conditions in equilibrium problems and expanding the applicability of established theories to a wider range of optimization scenarios.

A distributionally robust index tracking model with the CVaR penalty: tractable reformulation

We propose a distributionally robust index tracking model with the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) penalty. The model combines the idea of distributionally robust optimization for data uncertainty and the CVaR penalty to avoid large tracking errors. The probability ambiguity is described through a confidence region based on the first-order and second-order moments of the random vector involved. We reformulate the model in the form of a min-max-min optimization into an equivalent nonsmooth minimization problem. We further give an approximate discretization scheme of the possible continuous random vector of the nonsmooth minimization problem, whose objective function involves the maximum of numerous but finite nonsmooth functions. The convergence of the discretization scheme to the equivalent nonsmooth reformulation is shown under mild conditions. A smoothing projected gradient (SPG) method is employed to solve the discretization scheme. Any accumulation point is shown to be a global minimizer of the discretization scheme. Numerical results on the NASDAQ index dataset from January 2008 to July 2023 demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model and the efficiency of the SPG method, compared with several state-of-the-art models and corresponding methods for solving them.

The Global Maximum Principle for Optimal Control of Partially Observed Stochastic Systems Driven by Fractional Brownian Motion

In this paper we study the stochastic control problem of partially observed (multi-dimensional) stochastic system driven by both Brownian motions and fractional Brownian motions. In the absence of the powerful tool of Girsanov transformation, we introduce and study new stochastic processes which are used to transform the original problem to a "classical one". The adjoint backward stochastic differential equations and the necessary condition satisfied by the optimal control (maximum principle) are obtained.

Moment asymptotics for super-Brownian motions

In this paper, long time and high order moment asymptotics for super-Brownian motions (sBm's) are studied. By using a moment formula for sBm's (e.g. Theorem 3.1, Hu et al. Ann. Appl. Probab. 2023+), precise upper and lower bounds for all positive integer moments and for all time of sBm's for certain initial conditions are achieved. Then, the moment asymptotics as time goes to infinity or as the moment order goes to infinity follow immediately. Additionally, as an application of the two-sided moment bounds, the tail probability estimates of sBm's are obtained.

Large sample asymptotic analysis for normalized random measures with independent increments

Normalized random measures with independent increments represent a large class of Bayesian nonaprametric priors and are widely used in the Bayesian nonparametric framework. In this paper, we provide the posterior consistency analysis for normalized random measures with independent increments (NRMIs) through the corresponding Levy intensities used to characterize the completely random measures in the construction of NRMIs. Assumptions are introduced on the Levy intensities to analyze the posterior consistency of NRMIs and are verified with multiple interesting examples. A focus of the paper is the Bernstein-von Mises theorem for the normalized generalized gamma process (NGGP) when the true distribution of the sample is discrete or continuous. When the Bernstein-von Mises theorem is applied to construct credible sets, in addition to the usual form there will be an additional bias term on the left endpoint closely related to the number of atoms of the true distribution when it is discrete. We also discuss the affect of the estimators for the model parameters of the NGGP under the Bernstein-von Mises convergences. Finally, to further explain the necessity of adding the bias correction in constructing credible sets, we illustrate numerically how the bias correction affects the coverage of the true value by the credible sets when the true distribution is discrete.

Weak convergence of the backward Euler method for stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation with additive noise

We prove a weak rate of convergence of a fully discrete scheme for stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation with additive noise, where the spectral Galerkin method is used in space and the backward Euler method is used in time. Compared with the Allen--Cahn type stochastic partial differential equation, the error analysis here is much more sophisticated due to the presence of the unbounded operator in front of the nonlinear term. To address such issues, a novel and direct approach has been exploited which does not rely on a Kolmogorov equation but on the integration by parts formula from Malliavin calculus. To the best of our knowledge, the rates of weak convergence are revealed in the stochastic Cahn--Hilliard equation setting for the first time.

On mean-field super-Brownian motions

The mean-field stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) corresponding to a mean-field super-Brownian motion (sBm) is obtained and studied. In this mean-field sBm, the branching-particle lifetime is allowed to depend upon the probability distribution of the sBm itself, producing an SPDE whose space-time white noise coefficient has, in addition to the typical sBm square root, an extra factor that is a function of the probability law of the density of the mean-field sBm. This novel mean-field SPDE is thus motivated by population models where things like overcrowding and isolation can affect growth. A two step approximation method is employed to show existence for this SPDE under general conditions. Then, mild moment conditions are imposed to get uniqueness. Finally, smoothness of the SPDE solution is established under a further simplifying condition.

BSDEs generated by fractional space-time noise and related SPDEs

This paper is concerned with the backward stochastic differential equations whose generator is a weighted fractional Brownian field: $Y_t=ξ+\int_t^T Y_s W (ds,B_s) -\int_t^T Z_sdB_s$, $0\le t\le T$, where $W$ is a $(d+1)$-parameter weighted fractional Brownian field of Hurst parameter $H=(H_0, H_1, \cdots, H_d)$, which provide probabilistic interpretations (Feynman-Kac formulas) for certain linear stochastic partial differential equations with colored space-time noise. Conditions on the Hurst parameter $H$ and on the decay rate of the weight are given to ensure the existence and uniqueness of the solution pair. Moreover, the explicit expression for both components $Y$ and $Z$ of the solution pair are given.

Backward Euler method for stochastic differential equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients

We study the traditional backward Euler method for $m$-dimensional stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H > 1/2$ whose drift coefficient satisfies the one-sided Lipschitz condition. The backward Euler scheme is proved to be of order $1$ and this rate is optimal by showing the asymptotic error distribution result. Two numerical experiments are performed to validate our claims about the optimality of the rate of convergence.

Ergodic Estimators of double exponential Ornstein-Ulenbeck process

The goal of this paper is to construct ergodic estimators for the parameters in the double exponential Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, observed at discrete time instants with time step size h. The existence and uniqueness, the strong consistency, and the asymptotic normality of the estimators are obtained for arbitrarily fixed time step size h. A simulation method of the double exponential Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process is proposed and some numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimators.

Mean square stability of stochastic theta method for stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion

In this paper, we study the mean-square stability of the solution and its stochastic theta scheme for the following stochastic differential equations drive by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in (\frac 12,1)$: $$ dX(t)=f(t,X(t))dt+g(t,X(t))dB^{H}(t). $$ Firstly, we consider the special case when $f(t,X)=-λκt^{κ-1}X$ and $g(t,X)=μX$. The solution is explicit and is mean-square stable when $κ\geq 2H$. It is proved that if the parameter $2H\leqκ\le 3/2$ and $\frac{\sqrt{3/2}\cdot e}{\sqrt{3/2}\cdot e+1} (\approx 0.77)\leq θ\leq 1$ or $κ>3/2$ and $1/2<θ\le 1$, the stochastic theta method reproduces the mean-square stability; and that if $0<θ<\frac 12$, the numerical method does not preserve this stability unconditionally. Secondly, we study the stability of the solution and its stochastic theta scheme for nonlinear equations. Due to the presence of long memory, even the problem of stability in the mean square sense of the solution has not been well studied since the conventional techniques powerful for stochastic differential equations driven by Brownian motion are no longer applicable. Let alone the stability of numerical schemes. We need to develop a completely new set of techniques to deal with this difficulty. Numerical examples are carried out to illustrate our theoretical results.

Intermittency properties for a large class of stochastic PDEs driven by fractional space-time noises

In this paper, we study intermittency properties for various stochastic PDEs with varieties of space time Gaussian noises via matching upper and lower moment bounds of the solution. Due to the absence of the powerful Feynman Kac formula, the lower moment bounds have been missing for many interesting equations except for the stochastic heat equation. This work introduces and explores the Feynman diagram formula for the moments of the solution and the small ball nondegeneracy for the Green's function to obtain the lower bounds for all moments which match the upper moment bounds. Our upper and lower moments are valid for various interesting equations, including stochastic heat equations, stochastic wave equations, stochastic heat equations with fractional Laplcians, and stochastic diffusions which are both fractional in time and in space.

Logarithmic Euler Maruyama Scheme for Multi Dimensional Stochastic Delay Differential Equation

In this paper, we extend the logarithmic Euler-Maruyama scheme for stochastic delay differential equation in one dimension to the part where we propose a scheme for a system of stochastic delay differential equations. We then show that the scheme always maintains positivity subject to initial conditions. We then show the convergence of the proposed Euler-Maruyama scheme. With this scheme, all the approximate solutions are positive and the rate of convergence of this scheme is 0.5.
