In situ twistronics of van der Waals heterostructures

In van der Waals heterostructures, electronic bands of two-dimensional (2D) materials, their nontrivial topology, and electron-electron interactions can be dramatically changed by a moire pattern induced by twist angles between different layers. Such process is referred to as twistronics, where the tuning of twist angle can be realized through mechanical manipulation of 2D materials. Here we demonstrate an experimental technique that can achieve in situ dynamical rotation and manipulation of 2D materials in van der Waals heterostructures. Using this technique we fabricated heterostructures where graphene is perfectly aligned with both top and bottom encapsulating layers of hexagonal boron nitride. Our technique enables twisted 2D material systems in one single stack with dynamically tunable optical, mechanical, and electronic properties.

Synthetic high-order PT symmetry in a single coil resonator

The exploration of non-Hermitian systems with parity-time (PT) symmetry has witnessed immense research interest both fundamentally and technologically in a wide range of subject areas in physics and engineering. One significant example of the principal emerging fields in this context is the PT symmetric wireless applications using multiple coils that are spatially separated but mutually coupled with position-dependent coupling strength. Such a spatial PT configuration limits the flexibility and miniaturization of the PT symmetric designs. As far as this is concerned, inspired by scattering induced two opposite whispering-gallery (WG) modes in an optical resonator, analogously here we experimentally demonstrate a specially constructed second-order (2-nd order) PT symmetry in a single coil resonator, whose currents with two different directions are excited by internal bypass capacitor. Our proposed structure has the following peculiar feature: First, the bypass capacitor induces coupling in spectral resonances allow us to observe a 2-nd order phase transition between symmetry regimes, without the need of a second coil in the spatial PT case. Under this circumstance, this specially constructed PT symmetry can be regarded as synthetic PT symmetry, which is enabled by coupling modes with different directions. Second, by introducing two or more internal bypass capacitors, the synthetic high-order PT symmetric system bearing such as third-order exceptional point in a single coil resonator can be realized. These results will provide a new paradigm to realize higher-order PT symmetry towards the investigation of non-Hermitian physics in a synthetic perspective, which can be extended to other physical platforms such as optics and acoustics.

Positive level, negative level and level zero

This is a survey on the combinatorics and geometry of integrable representations of quantum affine Lie algebras with a particular focus on level 0. Pictures and examples are included to illustrate the affine Weyl group orbits, crystal graphs and Macdonald polynomials that provide detailed understanding of the structure of the extremal weight modules and their characters. The final section surveys the alcove walk method of working with the positive level, negative level and level zero affine flag varieties and describes the corresponding actions of the affine Hecke algebra.

Electronic phase separation in topological surface states of rhombohedral graphite

Of the two stable forms of graphite, hexagonal (HG) and rhombohedral (RG), the former is more common and has been studied extensively. RG is less stable, which so far precluded its detailed investigation, despite many theoretical predictions about the abundance of exotic interaction-induced physics. Advances in van der Waals heterostructure technology have now allowed us to make high-quality RG films up to 50 graphene layers thick and study their transport properties. We find that the bulk electronic states in such RG are gapped and, at low temperatures, electron transport is dominated by surface states. Because of topological protection, the surface states are robust and of high quality, allowing the observation of the quantum Hall effect, where RG exhibits phase transitions between gapless semimetallic phase and gapped quantum spin Hall phase with giant Berry curvature. An energy gap can also be opened in the surface states by breaking their inversion symmetry via applying a perpendicular electric field. Moreover, in RG films thinner than 4 nm, a gap is present even without an external electric field. This spontaneous gap opening shows pronounced hysteresis and other signatures characteristic of electronic phase separation, which we attribute to emergence of strongly-correlated electronic surface states.

Hybrid level anharmonicity and interference induced photon blockade in a two-qubit cavity QED system with dipole-dipole interaction

We theoretically study a quantum destructive interference (QDI) induced photon blockade in a two-qubit driven cavity QED system with dipole-dipole interaction (DDI). In the absence of dipole-dipole interaction, we show that a QDI-induced photon blockade can be achieved only when the qubit resonance frequency is different from the cavity mode frequency. When DDI is introduced the condition for this photon blockade is strongly dependent upon the pump field frequency, and yet is insensitive to the qubit-cavity coupling strength. Using this tunability feature we show that the conventional energy-level-anharmonicity-induced photon blockade and this DDI-based QDI-induced photon blockade can be combined together, resulting in a hybrid system with substantially improved mean photon number and second order correlation function. Our proposal provides a non-conventional and experimentally feasible platform for generating single photons.

Stacking Order in Graphite Films Controlled by Van der Waals Technology

In graphite crystals, layers of graphene reside in three equivalent, but distinct, stacking positions typically referred to as A, B, and C projections. The order in which the layers are stacked defines the electronic structure of the crystal, providing an exciting degree of freedom which can be exploited for designing graphitic materials with unusual properties including predicted high-temperature superconductivity and ferromagnetism. However, the lack of control of the stacking sequence limits most research to the stable ABA form of graphite. Here we demonstrate a strategy to control the stacking order using van der Waals technology. To this end, we first visualise the distribution of stacking domains in graphite films and then perform directional encapsulation of ABC-rich graphite crystallites with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We found that hBN-encapsulation which is introduced parallel to the graphite zigzag edges preserves ABC stacking, while encapsulation along the armchair edges transforms the stacking to ABA. The technique presented here should facilitate new research on the important properties of ABC graphite.

Realization of nonlinear optical nonreciprocity on a few-photon level based on atoms strongly coupled to an asymmetric cavity

Optical nonreciprocity is important in photonic information processing to route the optical signal or prevent the reverse flow of noise. By adopting the strong nonlinearity associated with a few atoms in a strongly coupled cavity QED system and an asymmetric cavity configuration, we experimentally demonstrate the nonreciprocal transmission between two counterpropagating light fields with extremely low power. This nonreciprocity can even occur on a few-photon level due to the high optical nonlinearity of the system. The working power can be flexibly tuned by changing the effective number of atoms strongly coupled to the cavity. The idea and result can be applied to optical chips as optical diodes by using fiber-based cavity QED systems. Our work opens up new perspectives for realizing optical nonreciprocity on a few-photon level based on the nonlinearities of atoms strongly coupled to an optical cavity.

Cohomological Hall algebras, vertex algebras and instantons

We define an action of the (double of) Cohomological Hall algebra of Kontsevich and Soibelman on the cohomology of the moduli space of spiked instantons of Nekrasov. We identify this action with the one of the affine Yangian of $\mathfrak{gl}(1)$. Based on that we derive the vertex algebra at the corner $\mathcal{W}_{r_1,r_2,r_3}$ of Gaiotto and Rapcak. We conjecture that our approach works for a big class of Calabi-Yau categories, including those associated with toric Calabi-Yau $3$-folds.

Stacking transition in rhombohedral graphite

Few layer graphene (FLG) has been recently intensively investigated for its variable electronic properties defined by a local atomic arrangement. While the most natural layers arrangement in FLG is ABA (Bernal) stacking, a metastable ABC (rhombohedral) stacking characterized by a relatively high energy barrier can also occur. When both stacking occur in the same FLG device this results in in-plane heterostructure with a domain wall (DW). We show that ABC stacking in FLG can be controllably and locally turned into ABA stacking by two following approaches. In the first approach, Joule heating was introduced and the transition was characterized by 2D-peak Raman spectra at a submicron spatial resolution. The observed transition was initiated at a small region and then the DW controllably shifted until the entire device became ABA stacked. In the second approach, the transition was achieved by illuminating the ABC region with a train of laser pulses of 790 nm wavelength, while the transition was visualized by transmission electron microscopy in both diffraction and dark field modes. Also, with this approach, a DW was visualized in the dark-field imaging mode, at a nanoscale spatial resolution.

Squeezed light induced symmetry breaking superradiant phase transition

We theoretically investigate the quantum phase transition in the collective systems of qubits in a high-quality cavity, which is driven by a squeezed light. We show that the squeezed light induced symmetry breaking can result in quantum phase transition without the ultrastrong coupling requirement. Using the standard mean field theory, we derive the condition of the quantum phase transition. Surprisingly, we show that there exists a tricritical point where the first- and second-order phase transitions meet. With specific atom-cavity coupling strengths, both the first- and second-order phase transition can be controlled by the squeezed light, leading to an optical switching from the normal phase to the superradiant phase by just increasing the squeezed light intensity. The signature of these phase transitions can be observed by detecting the phase space Wigner function distribution with different profiles controlled by the squeezed light intensity. Such superradiant phase transition can be implemented in various quantum systems, including atoms, quantum dots and ions in optical cavities as well as the circuit quantum electrodynamics system.

Manipulation and improvement of multiphoton blockade in a two cascade three-level atoms cavity-QED system

We present a study of manipulating the multiphoton blockade phenomenon in a single mode cavity with two ladder-type three-level atoms. Combining the cavity QED with electromagnetically induced transparency technique, we show that it is possible to actively manipulate the photon blockade when two atoms are in phase radiations. As a result, the two-photon blockade can be changed to three-photon blockade by changing the control field Rabi frequency. In the case of out-phase radiations, we show that the three-photon blockade can be improved with enhanced mean photon number. In addition, we show that the nonclassical field with sub-Poissonian distribution can be changed to the classical field with super-Poissonian distribution by tuning the Rabi frequency of the control field. The results presented in this work open up the possibility for achieving a two-photon gateway operation, which could be used in network of atom-cavity systems to control the quantum property of photons leaking from the cavity.

Dimensional reduction, quantum Hall effect and layer parity in graphite films

The quantum Hall effect (QHE) originates from discrete Landau levels forming in a two-dimensional (2D) electron system in a magnetic field. In three dimensions (3D), the QHE is forbidden because the third dimension spreads Landau levels into multiple overlapping bands, destroying the quantisation. Here we report the QHE in graphite crystals that are up to hundreds of atomic layers thick - thickness at which graphite was believed to behave as a 3D bulk semimetal. We attribute the observation to a dimensional reduction of electron dynamics in high magnetic fields, such that the electron spectrum remains continuous only in the direction of the magnetic field, and only the last two quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Landau bands cross the Fermi level. In sufficiently thin graphite films, the formation of standing waves breaks these 1D bands into a discrete spectrum, giving rise to a multitude of quantum Hall plateaux. Despite a large number of layers, we observe a profound difference between films with even and odd numbers of graphene layers. For odd numbers, the absence of inversion symmetry causes valley polarisation of the standing-wave states within 1D Landau bands. This reduces QHE gaps, as compared to films of similar thicknesses but with even layer numbers because the latter retain the inversion symmetry characteristic of bilayer graphene. High-quality graphite films present a novel QHE system with a parity-controlled valley polarisation and intricate interplay between orbital, spin and valley states, and clear signatures of electron-electron interactions including the fractional QHE below 0.5 K.

Versatile photon gateway based on controllable multiphoton blockade

Manipulating photons is an essential technique in quantum communication and computation. Combining the Raman electromagnetically induced transparency technology, we show that the photon blockade behavior can be actively controlled by using an external control field in a two atoms cavity-QED system. As a result, a versatile photon gateway can be achieved in this system, which changes the cavity photons from classical to quantum property and allows one photon, two photon and classical field leaking from the cavity. The proposal presented here has many potential applications for quantum information processing and can also be realized in many artificial atom system.

Exploring higher Jaynes-Cummings doublet in cavity quantum electrodynamics system with a broadband squeezed vacuum injection

We investigate the cavity excitation spectrum and the photon number distribution in a cavity QED system driven by a broadband squeezed vacuum. In an empty cavity, we show that only states with even number of photons can be measured under resonant condition since the squeezed vacuum consists of states with even number of photons only. When a single atom is trapped in the cavity, the strong coupling between the atom and cavity results in energy splittings of the system, and there exist two peaks in the cavity excitation spectrum at two-photon transition frequencies. At the central frequency, however, all photon states can be detected because of the interaction between the atom and cavity. Therefore, it can be used to detect whether a single atom is trapped in the cavity. We also show that the squeezed vacuum can promote multiphoton excitations in the cavity. Using a coherent probe field, it is possible to explore higher Jaynes-Cummings doublet even if the probe field intensity is very weak.

On two cohomological Hall algebras

We compare two cohomological Hall algebras (CoHA). The first one is the preprojective CoHA introduced by the authors in arXiv:1407.7994 associated to each quiver Q, and each algebraic oriented cohomology theory A. It is defined as the A-homology of the moduli of representations of the preprojective algebra of Q, generalizing the K-theoretic Hall algebra of commuting varieties of Schiffmann-Vasserot. The other one is the critical CoHA defined by Kontsevich-Soibelman associated to each quiver with potentials. It is defined using the equivariant cohomology with compact support with coefficients in the sheaf of vanishing cycles. In the present paper, we show that the critical CoHA, for the quiver with potential of Ginzburg, is isomorphic to the preprojective CoHA as algebras. As applications, we obtain an algebra homomorphism from the positive part of the Yangian to the critical CoHA.

Dynamical Properties of Three-Photon Blockade in a Two-Atom Cavity QED System

We theoretically investigate the three-photon blockade phenomenon in a two atoms cavity QED system, where two atoms are driven by a coherent field. In the case of in-phase radiations, we show that the three-photon blockade with bunched two photons can be realized in a small regime of the driving field Rabi frequency. However, in the case of out-of-phase radiations, the one-photon excitations are prohibited due to the destructive interference, and three-photon blockade can be realized in a wide regime of driving field Rabi frequency. In addition, the three-photon blockade phenomenon can be significantly improved. The results presented here show that this two-atom scheme is a good candidate to achieve anti-bunched photon pairs.

Electromagnetic control of the collective radiations with three-photon blockade

We study properties of collective radiations of coherently driven two three-level ladder-type atoms trapped in a single-mode cavity. Using the electromagnetically induced transparency technique, we show that the three-photon blockade effect can be observed and the properties of collective radiations are strongly dependent on the phase between two atoms. In the case of in-phase radiations, the frequency range to realize the three-photon blockade can be broadened as the control field increases. However, in the regime of the three-photon blockade, the property of collective radiations changes from hyperradiance to subradiance. In the case of out-of-phase radiations, hyperradiance accompanied with the three-photon blockade can be observed. The results presented in this paper show that our scheme is an attractive candidate to generate antibunched photon pairs and control the properties of collective radiations.

The elliptic Casimir connection of a simple Lie algebra

We construct a flat connection on the elliptic configuration space associated to any complex semisimple Lie algebra g. This elliptic Casimir connection has logarithmic singularities, and takes values in the deformed double current algebra of g defined by Guay. It degenerates to the trigonometric Casimir connection of g constructed by the first author. By analogy with the rational and trigonometric cases, we conjecture that the monodromy of the elliptic Casimir connection is described by the quantum Weyl group operators of the quantum toroidal algebra of g.
