Ghost imaging with a single detector

We experimentally demonstrate pseudothermal ghost imaging and ghost diffraction using only a single single-pixel detector. We achieve this by replacing the high resolution detector of the reference beam with a computation of the propagating field, following a recent proposal by Shapiro [J. H. Shapiro, arXiv:0807.2614 (2008)]. Since only a single detector is used, this provides an experimental evidence that pseudothermal ghost imaging does not rely on non-local quantum correlations. In addition, we show the depth-resolving capability of this ghost imaging technique.

Universal Correlations and Dynamic Disorder in a Nonlinear Periodic 1D System

When a periodic 1D system described by a tight-binding model is uniformly initialized with equal amplitudes at all sites, yet with completely random phases, it evolves into a thermal distribution with no spatial correlations. However, when the system is nonlinear, correlations are spontaneously formed. We find that for strong nonlinearities, the intensity histograms approach a narrow Gaussian distributed around their mean and phase correlations are formed between neighboring sites. Sites tend to be out-of-phase for a positive nonlinearity and in-phase for a negative one. The field correlations take a universal shape independent of parameters. This nonlinear evolution produces an effectively dynamically disordered potential which exhibits interesting diffusive behavior.

Spectral Polarization and Spectral Phase Control of Time and Energy Entangled Photons

We demonstrate a scheme to spectrally manipulate a collinear, continuous stream of time and energy entangled photons to generate beamlike, bandwidth-limited fuxes of polarization-entangled photons with nearly-degenerate wavelengths. Utilizing an ultrashort-pulse shaper to control the spectral phase and polarization of the photon pairs, we tailor the shape of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference pattern, demonstrating the rules that govern the dependence of this interference pattern on the spectral phases of the photons. We then use the pulse shaper to generate all four polarization Bell states. The singlet state generated by this scheme forms a very robust decoherence-free subspace, extremely suitable for long distance fiber-optics based quantum communication.

Parametric Excitation of Discrete Nonlinear Systems With Many Degrees of Freedom

The response of a large array of coupled nonlinear oscillators to parametric excitation is studied, motivated by the growing interest in the nonlinear dynamics of microelectromechanical and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS). Using a multiscale analysis, we derive an amplitude equation that captures the slow dynamics of the coupled oscillators just above the onset of parametric oscillations. The amplitude equation that we derive here from first principles contains uncommon nonlinear gradient terms which yield a unique wave-number dependent bifurcation similar in character to the behavior known to exist in fluids undergoing the Faraday wave instability. We suggest a number of experiments with nanomechanical or micromechanical resonators to test the predictions of our theory, in particular the strong hysteretic dependence on the drive amplitude.

The amplitude equation that we derive here from first principles exhibits a wavenumber dependent bifurcation similar in character to the behavior known to exist in fluids undergoing the Faraday wave instability. We confirm this behavior numerically and make suggestions for testing it experimentally with MEMS and NEMS resonators.

Close-packed floating clusters: granular hydrodynamics beyond the freezing point?

Monodisperse granular flows often develop regions with hexagonal close packing of particles. We investigate this effect in a system of inelastic hard spheres driven from below by a "thermal" plate. Molecular dynamics simulations show, in a wide range of parameters, a close-packed cluster supported by a low-density region. Surprisingly, the steady-state density profile, including the close-packed cluster part, is well described by a variant of Navier-Stokes granular hydrodynamics (NSGH). We suggest a simple explanation for the success of NSGH beyond the freezing point.

Development of a density inversion in driven granular gases

Granular materials fluidized by a rapidly vibrating bottom plate often develop a fascinating density inversion: a heavier layer of granulate supported by a lower-density region. We employ the Navier-Stokes granular hydrodynamics to follow a density inversion as it develops in time. Assuming a dilute low-Mach-number flow, we derive a reduced time-dependent model of the late stage of the dynamics. The model looks especially simple in the Lagrangian coordinates. The time-dependent solution describes the growth of a density peak at an intermediate height. A transient temperature minimum is predicted to develop in the region of the density peak. The temperature minimum disappears at later times, as the system approaches the steady state. At late times, the predictions of the low-Mach-number model are in good agreement with a numerical solution of the full hydrodynamic equations. At an early stage of the dynamics, pressure oscillations are predicted.
