From Euler to AI: Unifying Formulas for Mathematical Constants

The constant $\pi$ has fascinated scholars throughout the centuries, inspiring numerous formulas for its evaluation, such as infinite sums and continued fractions. Despite their individual significance, many of the underlying connections among formulas remain unknown, missing unifying theories that could unveil deeper understanding. The absence of a unifying theory reflects a broader challenge across math and science: knowledge is typically accumulated through isolated discoveries, while deeper connections often remain hidden. In this work, we present an automated framework for the unification of mathematical formulas. Our system combines Large Language Models (LLMs) for systematic formula harvesting, an LLM-code feedback loop for validation, and a novel symbolic algorithm for clustering and eventual unification. We demonstrate this methodology on the hallmark case of $\pi$, an ideal testing ground for symbolic unification. Applying this approach to 455,050 arXiv papers, we validate 385 distinct formulas for $\pi$ and prove relations between 360 (94%) of them, of which 166 (43%) can be derived from a single mathematical object - linking canonical formulas by Euler, Gauss, Brouncker, and newer ones from algorithmic discoveries by the Ramanujan Machine. Our method generalizes to other constants, including $e$, $\zeta(3)$, and Catalan's constant, demonstrating the potential of AI-assisted mathematics to uncover hidden structures and unify knowledge across domains.

Covariant field lines: a geometrical approach to electrodynamics

This paper revisits the geometric foundations of electromagnetic theory, by studying Faraday's concept of field lines. We introduce "covariant electromagnetic field lines," a novel construct that extends traditional field line concepts to a covariant framework. Our work includes the derivation of a closed-form formula for the field line curvature in proximity to a moving electric charge, showcasing the curvature is always non-singular, including nearby a point charge. Our geometric framework leads to a geometric derivation of the Lorentz force equation and its first-order corrections, circumventing the challenges of self-force singularities and providing insights into the problem of radiation-reaction. This study not only provides a fresh geometric perspective on electromagnetic field lines but also opens avenues for future research in fields like quantum electrodynamics, gravitational field theory, and beyond.

Algorithm-assisted discovery of an intrinsic order among mathematical constants

In recent decades, a growing number of discoveries in fields of mathematics have been assisted by computer algorithms, primarily for exploring large parameter spaces that humans would take too long to investigate. As computers and algorithms become more powerful, an intriguing possibility arises - the interplay between human intuition and computer algorithms can lead to discoveries of novel mathematical concepts that would otherwise remain elusive. To realize this perspective, we have developed a massively parallel computer algorithm that discovers an unprecedented number of continued fraction formulas for fundamental mathematical constants. The sheer number of formulas discovered by the algorithm unveils a novel mathematical structure that we call the conservative matrix field. Such matrix fields (1) unify thousands of existing formulas, (2) generate infinitely many new formulas, and most importantly, (3) lead to unexpected relations between different mathematical constants, including multiple integer values of the Riemann zeta function. Conservative matrix fields also enable new mathematical proofs of irrationality. In particular, we can use them to generalize the celebrated proof by Ap\'ery for the irrationality of $\zeta(3)$. Utilizing thousands of personal computers worldwide, our computer-supported research strategy demonstrates the power of experimental mathematics, highlighting the prospects of large-scale computational approaches to tackle longstanding open problems and discover unexpected connections across diverse fields of science.

The Ramanujan Machine: Automatically Generated Conjectures on Fundamental Constants

Fundamental mathematical constants like $e$ and $\pi$ are ubiquitous in diverse fields of science, from abstract mathematics to physics, biology and chemistry. For centuries, new formulas relating fundamental constants have been scarce and usually discovered sporadically. Here we propose a novel and systematic approach that leverages algorithms for deriving mathematical formulas for fundamental constants and help reveal their underlying structure. Our algorithms find dozens of well-known as well as previously unknown continued fraction representations of $\pi$, $e$, Catalan's constant, and values of the Riemann zeta function. Two example conjectures found by our algorithm and so far unproven are: \begin{equation*} \frac{24}{\pi^2} = 2 + 7\cdot 0\cdot 1+ \frac{8\cdot1^4}{2 + 7\cdot 1\cdot 2 + \frac{8\cdot2^4}{2 + 7\cdot 2\cdot 3 + \frac{8\cdot3^4}{2 + 7\cdot 3\cdot 4 + \frac{8\cdot4^4}{..}}}} \quad\quad,\quad\quad \frac{8}{7 \zeta(3)} = 1\cdot 1 - \frac{1^6}{3\cdot 7 - \frac{2^6}{5\cdot 19 - \frac{3^6}{7\cdot 37 - \frac{4^6}{..}}}} \end{equation*} We present two algorithms that proved useful in finding conjectures: a Meet-In-The-Middle (MITM) algorithm and a Gradient Descent (GD) tailored to the recurrent structure of continued fractions. Both algorithms are based on matching numerical values and thus they conjecture formulas without providing proofs and without requiring prior knowledge on any underlying mathematical structure. This approach is especially attractive for constants for which no mathematical structure is known, as it reverses the conventional approach of sequential logic in formal proofs. Instead, our work supports a different approach for research: algorithms utilizing numerical data to unveil mathematical structures, thus trying to play the role of intuition of great mathematicians of the past, providing leads to new mathematical research.

Experimental Observation of Acceleration-Induced Thermality

We examine the radiation emitted by high energy positrons channeled into silicon crystal samples. The positrons are modeled as semiclassical vector currents coupled to an Unruh-DeWitt detector to incorporate any local change in the energy of the positron. In the subsequent accelerated QED analysis, we discover a Larmor formula and power spectrum that are both thermalized by the acceleration. Thus, these systems explicitly exhibit thermalization of the detector energy gap at the celebrated Fulling-Davies-Unruh (FDU) temperature. Our derived power spectrum, with a nonzero energy gap, is then shown to have an excellent statistical agreement with high energy channeling experiments and also provides a method to directly measure the FDU temperature. We also investigate the Rindler horizon dynamics and confirm that the Bekenstein-Hawking area-entropy law is satisfied in these experiments. As such, we present the evidence for the first observation of acceleration-induced thermality in a non-analogue system.

Accelerated-Cherenkov radiation and signatures of radiation reaction

In this manuscript we examine an accelerated charged particle moving through an optical medium, and explore the emission of accelerated-Cherenkov radiation. The particle's reaction to acceleration creates a low-frequency spectral cutoff in the Cherenkov emission that has a sharp resonance at the superluminal threshold. Moreover, the effect of recoil on the radiation is incorporated kinematically through the use of an Unruh-DeWitt detector by setting an energy gap, i.e., the change in electron energy, to the recoil energy of the emitted photon. The simultaneous presence of recoil and acceleration conspire to produce a localized resonance peak in the emission. These theoretical considerations could be used to construct high precision tests of radiation reaction using Cherenkov emission under acceleration.

Asymptotic Precision Corrections to Radiation Reaction

The radiative correction to the equation of motion for a moving charged particle is one of the oldest open problems in physics. The problem originates in the emission of radiation by an accelerated charge, which must result in a loss of energy and recoil of the charge, adding a correction to the well-known Lorentz force. When radiation reaction is neglected, it is well known that the dynamics of a charge in an ideal plane-wave field is periodic. Here we investigate the long-time dynamics of a charge in such a field and show that all current models of radiation reaction strictly forbid periodic dynamics. Consequently, we show that under the influence of the external field, the loss of energy to radiation reaction causes particles to accelerate toward an infinite kinetic energy. Such a phenomenon persists even in weak laser fields and puts forward the possibility of testing radiation reaction through long-duration weak-field precision measurements, rather than through strong-field experiments. We further provide numerical examples suggesting realistic conditions for such measurements through the asymptotic frequency shift and energy loss of a charge, which for example can be detected using electron energy spectrometers in ultrafast electron microscopes.

The hidden geometry of electromagnetism

Nearly all field theories suffer from singularities when particles are introduced. This is true in both classical and quantum physics. Classical field singularities result in the notorious self-force problem, where it is unknown how the dynamics of a particle change when the particle interacts with its own (self) field. Self-force is a pressing issue and an active research topic in gravitational phenomena, as well as a source of controversies in classical electromagnetism. In this work, we study a hidden geometrical structure manifested by the electromagnetic field-lines that has the potential of eliminating all singularities from classical electrodynamics. We explore preliminary results towards a consistent way of treating both self- and external fields.

Transparency of Strong Gravitational Waves

This paper studies diagonal spacetime metrics. It is shown that the overdetermined Einstein vacuum equations are compatible if one Killing vector exists. The stability of plane gravitational waves of the Robinson type is studied. This stability problem bares a fantastic mathematical resemblance to the stability of the Schwarzschild black hole studied by Regge and Wheeler. Just like for the Schwarzschild black hole, the Robinson gravitational waves are proven to be stable with respect to small perturbations. We conjecture that a bigger class of vacuum solutions are stable, among which are all gravitational solitons. Moreover, the stability analysis reveals a surprising fact: a wave barrier will be transparent to the Robinson waves, which therefore passes through the barrier freely. This is a hint of integrability of the 1+2 vacuum Einstein equations for diagonal metrics.

The Symmetric Chiral Field Equation

The reduction problem of the chiral field equation on symmetric spaces is studied. It is shown that the symmetric chiral field has infinitely many local conservation laws. A recursive formula for these conservation laws is derived and the first associated integral of motion are given explicitly. Furthermore, the Zakharov-Mikhailov (inverse scattering) transform is used to derive explicit formulas for the N-soliton solution on arbitrary diagonal background. The solitons' properties and interactions are analyzed. Such solitons are naturally related to gravitational solitons of Einstein's field equations, and this result is used to clarify why the latter do not have fixed amplitude and velocities (unlike `classical' solitons). Finally, it is proven that the symmetric chiral field (matrix) equation is equivalent to a single scalar equation, which in turn, is equivalent to the Sine-Gordon equation.

Horizons of Strong Field Physics

Discussing the limitations on the validity of classical electrodynamics, we show that present day laser pulse technology applied to head-on-collisions with relativistic electrons generates fields strong enough to permit experimentation at the limits of validity of the Lorentz force, and the development of experimental tests of Mach's principle. We also discuss more distant opportunities for exploring the nature of laws of physics and the vacuum structure. We then conclude that the predictions of quantum electrodynamics in the presence of critical fields are not completely satisfactory and argue that the study of Laser materialization into particle pairs opens a new domain of quantum electrodynamics.
