Billiards and Hofer's Geometry

We present a link between billiards in convex plane domains and Hofer's geometry, an area of symplectic topology. For smooth strictly convex billiard tables, we prove that the Hofer distance between the corresponding billiard ball maps admits an upper bound in terms of a simple geometric distance between the tables. We use this result to show that the billiard ball map of a convex polygon lies in the completion, with respect to Hofer's metric, of the group of smooth area-preserving maps of the annulus. Finally, we discuss related connections to dynamics and pose several open problems.

A Counterexample to Viterbo's Conjecture

We present a counterexample to Viterbo's volume-capacity conjecture. This implies, in particular, that in contrast with a well-known conjecture, symplectic capacities do not coincide on the class of convex domains in the classical phase space.

Quantitative Results on Symplectic Barriers

In this paper we present some quantitative results concerning symplectic barriers. In particular, we answer a question raised by Sackel, Song, Varolgunes, and Zhu regarding the symplectic size of the $2n$-dimensional Euclidean ball with a codimension-two linear subspace removed.

From Lagrangian Products to Toric Domains via the Toda Lattice

In this paper we use the periodic Toda lattice to show that certain Lagrangian product configurations in the classical phase space are symplectically equivalent to toric domains. In particular, we prove that the Lagrangian product of a certain simplex and the Voronoi cell of the root lattice $A_n$ is symplectically equivalent to a Euclidean ball. As a consequence, we deduce that the Lagrangian product of an equilateral triangle and a regular hexagon is symplectomorphic to a Euclidean ball in dimension 4.

On the Existence of Symplectic Barriers

In this note we establish the existence of a new type of rigidity of symplectic embeddings coming from obligatory intersections with symplectic planes. More precisely, we prove that if a Euclidean ball is symplectically embedded in the Euclidean unit ball, then it must intersect a sufficiently fine grid of two-codimensional pairwise disjoint symplectic planes. Inspired by analogous terminology for Lagrangian submanifolds, we refer to these obstructions as symplectic barriers.

Remarks on symplectic capacities of $p$-products

In this note we study the behavior of symplectic capacities of convex domains in the classical phase space with respect to symplectic $p$-products. As an application, by using a "tensor power trick", we show that it is enough to prove the weak version of Viterbo's volume-capacity conjecture in the asymptotic regime, i.e., when the dimension is sent to infinity. In addition, we introduce a conjecture about higher-order capacities of $p$-products, and show that if it holds, then there are no non-trivial $p$-decompositions of the symplectic ball.

Caustic-Free Regions for Billiards on Surfaces of Constant Curvature

In this note we study caustic-free regions for convex billiard tables in the hyperbolic plane or the hemisphere. In particular, following a result by Gutkin and Katok in the Euclidean case, we estimate the size of such regions in terms of the geometry of the billiard table. Moreover, we extend to this setting a theorem due to Hubacher which shows that no caustics exist near the boundary of a convex billiard table whose curvature is discontinuous.

Symplectic embeddings of the $\ell_p$-sum of two discs

In this paper we study symplectic embedding questions for the $\ell_p$-sum of two discs in ${\mathbb R}^4$, when $1 \leq p \leq \infty$. In particular, we compute the symplectic inner and outer radii in these cases, and show how different kinds of embedding rigidity and flexibility phenomena appear as a function of the parameter $p$.

Duality of Caustics in Minkowski Billiards

In this paper we study convex caustics in Minkowski billiards. We show that for the Euclidean billiard dynamics in a planar smooth centrally symmetric and strictly convex body $K$, for every convex caustic which $K$ possesses, the "dual" billiard dynamics in which the table is the Euclidean unit disk and the geometry that governs the motion is induced by the body $K$, possesses a dual convex caustic. Such a pair of caustics is dual in a strong sense, and in particular they have the same perimeter, Lazutkin parameter (both measured with respect to the corresponding geometries), and rotation number. We show moreover that for general Minkowski billiards this phenomenon fails, and one can construct a smooth caustic in a Minkowski billiard table which possesses no dual convex caustic.

Asymptotic Equivalence of Symplectic Capacities

A long-standing conjecture states that all normalized symplectic capacities coincide on the class of convex subsets of ${\mathbb R}^{2n}$. In this note we focus on an asymptotic (in the dimension) version of this conjecture, and show that when restricted to the class of centrally symmetric convex bodies in ${\mathbb R}^{2n}$, several symplectic capacities, including the Ekeland-Hofer-Zehnder capacity, the displacement energy capacity, and the cylindrical capacity, are all equivalent up to an absolute constant.

When symplectic topology meets Banach space geometry

In this paper we survey some recent works that take the first steps toward establishing bilateral connections between symplectic geometry and several other fields, namely, asymptotic geometric analysis, classical convex geometry, and the theory of normed spaces.

From Symplectic Measurements to the Mahler Conjecture

In this note we link symplectic and convex geometry by relating two seemingly different open conjectures: a symplectic isoperimetric-type inequality for convex domains, and Mahler's conjecture on the volume product of centrally symmetric convex bodies. More precisely, we show that if for convex bodies of fixed volume in the classical phase space the Hofer-Zehnder capacity is maximized by the Euclidean ball, then a hypercube is a minimizer for the volume product among centrally symmetric convex bodies.

Remarks about Mixed Discriminants and Volumes

In this note we prove certain inequalities for mixed discriminants of positive semi-definite matrices, and mixed volumes of compact convex sets in n-dimensions. Moreover, we discuss how the latter are related to the monotonicity of an information functional on the class of convex bodies, which is a geometric analogue of the classical Fisher information.

Bounds for Minkowski Billiard Trajectories in Convex Bodies

In this paper we use the Ekeland-Hofer-Zehnder symplectic capacity to provide several bounds and inequalities for the length of the shortest periodic billiard trajectory in a smooth convex body in ${\mathbb R}^{n}$. Our results hold both for classical billiards, as well as for the more general case of Minkowski billiards.

Localization of Multi-Dimensional Wigner Distributions

A well known result of P. Flandrin states that a Gaussian uniquely maximizes the integral of the Wigner distribution over every centered disc in the phase plane. While there is no difficulty in generalizing this result to higher-dimensional poly-discs, the generalization to balls is less obvious. In this note we provide such a generalization.
