On Scale Versus Conformal Symmetry in Turbulence

We consider the statistical description of steady state fully developed incompressible fluid turbulence at the inertial range of scales in any number of spatial dimensions. We show that turbulence statistics is scale but not conformally covariant, with the only possible exception being the direct enstrophy cascade in two space dimensions. We argue that the same conclusions hold for compressible non-relativistic turbulence as well as for relativistic turbulence. We discuss the modification of our conclusions in the presence of vacuum expectation values of negative dimension operators. We consider the issue of non-locality of the stress-energy tensor of inertial range turbulence field theory.

Spontaneous Breaking of Non-Relativistic Scale Symmetry

We analyze the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance in Galilean invariant field theories. We show that the existence of a dynamic gapless dilaton mode depends on whether the $U(1)$ particle number or the Galilean boost symmetry are spontaneously broken. When both scale and particle number symmetries are spontaneously broken there is one propagating gapless Nambu-Goldstone mode. Its dispersion relation is linear if the chemical potential is nonzero and quadratic otherwise. We discuss the reversibility of RG flows in such theories.

Lifshitz Anomalies, Ward Identities and Split Dimensional Regularization

We analyze the structure of the stress-energy tensor correlation functions in Lifshitz field theories and construct the corresponding anomalous Ward identities. We develop a framework for calculating the anomaly coefficients that employs a split dimensional regularization and the pole residues. We demonstrate the procedure by calculating the free scalar Lifshitz scale anomalies in $2+1$ spacetime dimensions. We find that the analysis of the regularization dependent trivial terms requires a curved spacetime description without a foliation structure. We discuss potential ambiguities in Lifshitz scale anomaly definitions.

On Non-Relativistic Supersymmetry and its Spontaneous Breaking

We study non-relativistic supersymmetric field theories in diverse dimensions. The theories consist of scalars and fermions and possess two, four or eight real supercharges. We analyze their spontaneous supersymmetry breaking structure and calculate the gapless spectrum. We calculate the perturbative quantum corrections at the supersymmetric vacua and show that while supersymmetry is preserved, scale invariance is broken and the theories are IR free.

On the Membrane Paradigm and Spontaneous Breaking of Horizon BMS Symmetries

We consider a BMS-type symmetry action on isolated horizons in asymptotically flat spacetimes. From the viewpoint of the non-relativistic field theory on a horizon membrane, supertranslations shift the field theory spatial momentum. The latter is related by a Ward identity to the particle number symmetry current and is spontaneously broken. The corresponding Goldstone boson shifts the horizon angular momentum and can be detected quantum mechanically. Similarly, area preserving superrotations are spontaneously broken on the horizon membrane and we identify the corresponding gapless modes. In asymptotically AdS spacetimes we study the BMS-type symmetry action on the horizon in a holographic superfluid dual. We identify the horizon supertranslation Goldstone boson as the holographic superfluid Goldstone mode.

On Swift Gravitons

We use the method of characteristics to study superluminal graviton (thereof called swift graviton) propagation in theories of higher curvature gravity of the form $($Riemann$)^2$, $($Riemann$)^3$, $\nabla^2 ($Riemann$)^2$ and $($Riemann$)^4$. We consider a pp-wave background. When probed by gravitons with an appropriate polarisation, several of the gravitational theories under consideration exhibit characteristic hypersurfaces outside the flat spacetime light-cone.

Non-Relativistic Scale Anomalies

We extend the cohomological analysis in arXiv:1410.5831 of anisotropic Lifshitz scale anomalies. We consider non-relativistic theories with a dynamical critical exponent $z=2$ with or without non-relativistic boosts and a particle number symmetry. We distinguish between cases depending on whether the time direction does or does not induce a foliation structure. We analyse both $1+1$ and $2+1$ spacetime dimensions. In $1+1$ dimensions we find no scale anomalies with Galilean boost symmetries. The anomalies in $2+1$ dimensions with Galilean boosts and a foliation structure are all B-type and are identical to the Lifshitz case in the purely spatial sector. With Galilean boosts and without a foliation structure we find also an A-type scale anomaly. There is an infinite ladder of B-type anomalies in the absence of a foliation structure with or without Galilean boosts. We discuss the relation between the existence of a foliation structure and the causality of the field theory.

Scaling Relations in Two-Dimensional Relativistic Hydrodynamic Turbulence

We derive exact scaling relations for two-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamic turbulence in the inertial range of scales. We consider both the energy cascade towards large scales and the enstrophy cascade towards small scales. We illustrate these relations by numerical simulations of turbulent weakly compressible flows. Intriguingly, the fluid-gravity correspondence implies that the gravitational field in spacetimes with anti-de Sitter asymptotics should exhibit similar scaling relations.

The Anomalous Scaling Exponents of Turbulence in General Dimension from Random Geometry

We propose an exact analytical formula for the anomalous scaling exponents of inertial range structure functions in incompressible fluid turbulence. The formula is a gravitational Knizhnik-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov (KPZ)-type relation, and is valid in any number of space dimensions. It incorporates intermittency by gravitationally dressing the Kolmogorov linear scaling via a coupling to a random geometry. The formula has one real parameter $γ$ that depends on the number of space dimensions. The scaling exponents satisfy the convexity inequality, and the supersonic bound constraint. They agree with the experimental and numerical data in two and three space dimensions, and with numerical data in four space dimensions. Intermittency increases with $γ$, and in the infinite $γ$ limit the scaling exponents approach the value one, as in Burgers turbulence. At large $n$ the $n$th order exponent scales as $\sqrt{n}$. We discuss the relation between fluid flows and black hole geometry that inspired our proposal.

Parity Breaking Transport in Lifshitz Hydrodynamics

We derive the constitutive relations of first order charged hydrodynamics for theories with Lifshitz scaling and broken parity in $2+1$ and $3+1$ spacetime dimensions. In addition to the anomalous (in $3+1$) or Hall (in $2+1$) transport of relativistic hydrodynamics, there is an additional non-dissipative transport allowed by the absence of boost invariance. We analyze the non-relativistic limit and use a phenomenological model of a strange metal to argue that these effects can be measured in principle by using electromagnetic fields with non-zero gradients.

On Supersymmetric Lifshitz Field Theories

We consider field theories that exhibit a supersymmetric Lifshitz scaling with two real supercharges. The theories can be formulated in the language of stochastic quantization. We construct the free field supersymmetry algebra with rotation singlet fermions for an even dynamical exponent $z=2k$ in an arbitrary dimension. We analyze the classical and quantum $z=2$ supersymmetric interactions in $2+1$ and $3+1$ spacetime dimensions and reveal a supersymmetry preserving quantum diagrammatic cancellation. Stochastic quantization indicates that Lifshitz scale invariance is broken in the $(3+1)$-dimensional quantum theory.

Ward Identities for Transport in 2+1 Dimensions

We use the Ward identities corresponding to general linear transformations, and derive relations between transport coefficients of $(2+1)$-dimensional systems. Our analysis includes relativistic and Galilean invariant systems, as well as systems without boost invariance such as Lifshitz theories. We consider translation invariant, as well as broken translation invariant cases, and include an external magnetic field. Our results agree with effective theory relations of incompressible Hall fluid, and with holographic calculations in a magnetically charged black hole background.

Horava-Lifshitz Black Hole Hydrodynamics

We consider the holographic hydrodynamics of black holes in generally covariant gravity theories with a preferred time foliation. Gravitational perturbations in these theories have spin two and spin zero helicity modes with generically different speeds. The black hole solutions possess a spacelike causal boundary called the universal horizon. We relate the flux of the spin zero perturbation across the universal horizon to the new dissipative transport in Lifshitz field theory hydrodynamics found in arXiv:1304.7481. We construct in detail the hydrodynamics of one such black hole solution, and calculate the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density.

Ward Identities for Hall Transport

We derive quantum field theory Ward identities based on linear area preserving and conformal transformations in 2+1 dimensions. The identities relate Hall viscosities, Hall conductivities and the angular momentum. They apply both for relativistic and non relativistic systems, at zero and at finite temperature. We consider systems with or without translation invariance, and introduce an external magnetic field and viscous drag terms. A special case of the identities yields the well known relation between the Hall conductivity and half the angular momentum density.

Odd Parity Transport In Non-Abelian Superfluids From Symmetry Locking

We consider relativistic non-Abelian superfluids, where the expectation value of the global symmetry currents relate space and internal indices, thus creating a "locked" phase. Locking a superfluid with SU(2) internal symmetry in 2+1 dimensions breaks parity spontaneously, and introduces parity-odd terms in the constitutive relations. We show that there are qualitatively different extensions of the rest frame locking to non-zero velocities. We construct the resulting superfluid hydrodynamics up to the first derivative order. Using an expansion close to the critical point, we estimate the ratio of the Hall viscosity and the angular momentum density. Our general hydrodynamic results are compatible with the holographic p-wave calculations in arXiv:1311.4882.

Lifshitz Scale Anomalies

We analyse scale anomalies in Lifshitz field theories, formulated as the relative cohomology of the scaling operator with respect to foliation preserving diffeomorphisms. We construct a detailed framework that enables us to calculate the anomalies for any number of spatial dimensions, and for any value of the dynamical exponent. We derive selection rules, and establish the anomaly structure in diverse universal sectors. We present the complete cohomologies for various examples in one, two and three space dimensions for several values of the dynamical exponent. Our calculations indicate that all the Lifshitz scale anomalies are trivial descents, called B-type in the terminology of conformal anomalies. However, not all the trivial descents are cohomologically non-trivial. We compare the conformal anomalies to Lifshitz scale anomalies with a dynamical exponent equal to one.

Lifshitz Superfluid Hydrodynamics

We construct the first order hydrodynamics of quantum critical points with Lifshitz scaling and a spontaneously broken symmetry. The fluid is described by a combination of two flows, a normal component that carries entropy and a super-flow which has zero viscosity and carries no entropy. We analyze the new transport effects allowed by the lack of boost invariance and constrain them by the local second law of thermodynamics. Imposing time-reversal invariance, we find eight new parity even transport coefficients. The formulation is applicable, in general, to any superfluid/superconductor with an explicit breaking of boost symmetry, in particular to high $T_c$ superconductors. We discuss possible experimental signatures.
