Rotating vortex solitons supported by localized gain

We show that ring-like localized gain landscapes imprinted in focusing cubic (Kerr) nonlinear media with strong two-photon absorption support new types of stable higher-order vortex solitons containing multiple phase singularities nested inside a single core. The phase singularities are found to rotate around the center of the gain landscape, with the rotation period being determined by the strength of the gain and the nonlinear absorption.

Symmetry breaking and multi-hump solitons in inhomogeneous gain landscapes

We address one-dimensional soliton formation in the cubic nonlinear medium with two-photon absorption and transversally inhomogeneous gain landscape consisting of a single or several amplifying channels. Existence of the solitons requires certain threshold gain while the properties of solitons strongly depend on whether the number of the amplifying channels is odd or even. In the former case an increase of the gain leads to a symmetry breaking, which occurs through the pitchfork bifurcation, and to emergence of a single or several co-existing stable asymmetric modes. In the case of even number of amplifying channels we have found only asymmetric stable states.

Solitons in a medium with linear dissipation and localized gain

We present a variety of dissipative solitons and breathing modes in a medium with localized gain and homogeneous linear dissipation. The system posses a number of unusual properties, like exponentially localized modes in both focusing and defocusing media, the existence of modes in focusing media at negative propagation constant values, the simultaneous existence of stable symmetric and anti-symmetric localized modes when the gain landscape possesses two local maxima, as well as the existence of stable breathing solutions.

Disorder-induced soliton transmission in nonlinear photonic lattices

We address soliton transmission and reflection in nonlinear photonic lattices embedded into uniform Kerr nonlinear media. We show that by introducing disorder into the guiding lattice channels, one may achieve soliton transmission even under conditions where regular lattices reflect the input beam completely. In contrast, in the parameter range where the lattice is almost transparent for incoming solitons, disorder may induce a significant reflection.

Three-Dimensional Light Bullets in Arrays of Waveguides

We report the first experimental observation of 3D-LBs, excited by femtosecond pulses in a system featuring quasi-instantaneous cubic nonlinearity and a periodic, transversally-modulated refractive index. Stringent evidence of the excitation of LBs is based on time-gated images and spectra which perfectly match our numerical simulations. Furthermore, we reveal a novel evolution mechanism forcing the LBs to follow varying dispersion/diffraction conditions, until they leave their existence range and decay.

Radially symmetric and azimuthally modulated vortex solitons supported by localized gain

We discover that a spatially localized gain supports stable vortex solitons in media with cubic nonlinearity and two-photon absorption. The interplay between nonlinear losses and gain in amplifying rings results in suppression of otherwise ubiquitous azimuthal modulation instabilities of radially symmetric vortex solitons. We uncover that the topology of the gain profile imposes restrictions on the maximal possible charge of vortex solitons. Symmetry breaking occurs at high gain levels resulting in the formation of necklace vortex solitons composed of asymmetric bright spots.

Two-dimensional dissipative solitons supported by localized gain

We show that the balance between localized gain and nonlinear cubic dissipation in the twodimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation allows for existence of stable two-dimensional localized modes which we identify as solitons. Such modes exist only when the gain is strong enough and the energy flow exceeds certain threshold value. The observed solitons neither undergo diffractive spreading nor collapse. Above the critical value of the gain the symmetry breaking occurs and asymmetric dissipative solitons emerge.

Two-dimensional vector solitons stabilized by a linear or nonlinear lattice acting in one component

The subject of the work is the stabilization of two-dimensional (2D) two-component (vector) solitons, in media with the attractive cubic nonlinearity, against the collapse by a linear lattice (LL, which is induced by a periodic modulation of the refractive index in optics, or created as an optical lattice in BEC), or by a nonlinear lattice (NL, induced by a periodic modulation of the nonlinearity coefficient). We demonstrate that, due to the XPM (cross-phase-modulation) coupling between the components, the LL or NL acting on a single component is sufficient for the stabilization of vector solitons, that include a component for which the self-focusing medium is uniform. In the case of the LL, the vector solitons are stable almost in their entire existence domain, while the NL can only stabilize the solitons in which the component affected by the lattice carries the norm which is comparable to, or larger than the norm of the component in the uniform medium.

Solitons in nonlinear lattices

This article offers a comprehensive survey of results obtained for solitons and complex nonlinear wave patterns supported by purely nonlinear lattices (NLs), which represent a spatially periodic modulation of the local strength and sign of the nonlinearity, and their combinations with linear lattices. A majority of the results obtained, thus far, in this field and reviewed in this article are theoretical. Nevertheless, relevant experimental settings are surveyed too, with emphasis on perspectives for implementation of the theoretical predictions in the experiment. Physical systems discussed in the review belong to the realms of nonlinear optics (including artificial optical media, such as photonic crystals, and plasmonics) and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). The solitons are considered in one, two, and three dimensions (1D, 2D, and 3D). Basic properties of the solitons presented in the review are their existence, stability, and mobility. Although the field is still far from completion, general conclusions can be drawn. In particular, a novel fundamental property of 1D solitons, which does not occur in the absence of NLs, is a finite threshold value of the soliton norm, necessary for their existence. In multidimensional settings, the stability of solitons supported by the spatial modulation of the nonlinearity is a truly challenging problem, for the theoretical and experimental studies alike. In both the 1D and 2D cases, the mechanism which creates solitons in NLs is principally different from its counterpart in linear lattices, as the solitons are created directly, rather than bifurcating from Bloch modes of linear lattices.

Bloch wavepacket control in truncated modulated optical lattices

We study the reflection of Bloch wavepackets at the interface of optical lattice possessing a shallow longitudinal out-of-phase refractive index modulation in adjacent waveguides. We show that the relation between the transmitted and reflected energy flows can be efficiently controlled by tuning the frequency and the depth of the modulation. Thus, complete beam reflection may be achieved for a set of resonant modulation frequencies at which light tunneling between adjacent guides of modulated lattice is inhibited.

Thresholdless surface solitons

We report on the existence of nonlinear surface waves which, on the one hand, do not require the threshold energy flow for their excitation, and, on the other hand, extend into media at both sides of the interface at low powers, i.e. can not be reduced to the conventional Tamm states. Such waves can be excited if the refractive index in at least one of the materials forming the interface is periodically modulated, with properly selected modulation depth and frequency. Thresholdless surface solitons can be stable in the entire existence domain.

Dissipative defect modes in periodic structures

We show that periodic optical lattices imprinted in cubic nonlinear media with strong two-photon absorption and localized linear gain landscapes support stable dissipative defect modes in both focusing and defocusing media. Their shapes and transverse extent are determined by the propagation constant that belongs to a gap of the lattice spectrum which, in turn, is determined by the relation between gain and losses. One-hump and two-hump dissipative defect modes are obtained.

Nonlinearity-mediated soliton ejection from trapping potentials in nonlocal media

We address the properties of optical solitons in thermal nonlinear media with a local refractive index defect that is capable to trap solitons launched even close to the sample boundary despite the boundary-mediated forces that tend to deflect all beams toward the center of the sample. We show that while such forces become more pronounced with increasing the input beam power the defect can trap only light below a critical power above which solitons are ejected. The dynamics of soliton ejection and the subsequent propagation may be controlled.

Dissipative surface solitons in periodic structures

We report dissipative surface solitons forming at the interface between a semi-infinite lattice and a homogeneous Kerr medium. The solitons exist due to balance between amplification in the near-surface lattice channel and two-photon absorption. The stable dissipative surface solitons exist in both focusing and defocusing media, when propagation constants of corresponding states fall into a total semi-infinite and or into one of total finite gaps of the spectrum (i.e. in a domain where propagation of linear waves is inhibited for the both media). In a general situation, the surface solitons form when amplification coefficient exceeds threshold value. When a soliton is formed in a total finite gap there exists also the upper limit for the linear gain.

Spectral tunneling of lattice nonlocal solitons

We address spectral tunneling of walking spatial solitons in photorefractive media with nonlocal diffusion of the nonlinear response and an imprinted shallow optical lattice. In contrast to materials with local nonlinearities, where solitons travelling across the lattice close to the Bragg angle suffer large radiative losses, in photorefractive media with diffusion nonlinearity resulting in self-bending solitons survive when their propagation angle approaches and even exceeds the Bragg angle. In the spatial frequency domain this effect can be considered as tunneling through the band of spatial frequencies centered around the Bragg frequency where the spatial group velocity dispersion is positive.

Light bullets by synthetic diffraction-dispersion matching

We put forward a new approach to generate stable, fully three-dimensional light bullets, which is based on the matching of the intrinsic material dispersion with a suitable effective diffraction. The matching is achieved in adequate waveguide arrays whose refractive index is periodically modulated along the direction of light propagation. We show that by using non-conventional, out-of-phase longitudinal modulation of the refractive index of neighboring channels, it is possible to tune the effective diffraction to match the intrinsic material group velocity dispersion. Three-dimensional light bullets are shown to form at reduced energy levels, in settings where the dispersion would be far too weak to generate bullets in the absence of array.

A method to generate complex quasi-nondiffracting optical lattices

We put forward a powerful technique that allows generating quasi-non-diffracting light beams with a variety of complex transverse shapes and topologies. We show that, e.g., spiraling patterns, patterns featuring curved or bent bright stripes, or patterns featuring arbitrary combinations of harmonic, Bessel, Mathieu and parabolic beams occupying different domains in the transverse plane can be produced. The quasi-non-diffracting patterns open up a wealth of opportunities for the manipulation of matter and optical waves, colloidal and living particles, with applications in biophysics, and quantum, nonlinear and atom optics.

Light tunneling inhibition in longitudinally modulated Bragg-guiding arrays

We consider waveguide array in which defect channels with reduced refractive index are spaced periodically and the light guiding is achieved due to Bragg reflection. We show that tunneling between defects can be inhibited using out-of-phase longitudinal modulation of refractive index exclusively in defect channels. Tunneling inhibition is almost perfect for strongly localized modes with propagation constants close to the gap center.
