Topological edge solitons in \{chi}(2) waveguide arrays

We address the formation of \{chi}(2) topological edge solitons emerging in topologically nontrivial phase in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) waveguide arrays. We consider edge solitons, whose fundamental frequency (FF) component belongs to the topological gap, while phase mismatch determines whether second harmonic (SH) component falls into topological or trivial forbidden gaps of the spectrum for SH wave. Two representative types of edge solitons are found, one of which is thresholdless and bifurcates from topological edge state in FF component, while other exists above power threshold and emanates from topological edge state in SH wave. Both types of solitons can be stable. Their stability, localization degree, and internal structure strongly depend on phase mismatch between FF and SH waves. Our results open new prospects for control of topologically nontrivial states by parametric wave interactions.

Topological Floquet bound states in the continuum

A honeycomb array of helical waveguides with zigzag-zigzag edges and a refractive index gradient orthogonal to the edges may support Floquet bound states in continuum (BICs). The gradient of the refractive index leads to strong asymmetry of the Floquet-Bloch spectrum. The mechanism of creation of such Floquet BICs is understood as emergence of crossings and avoided crossings of the branches supported by spatially limited stripe array. The whole spectrum of a finite array is split into the bulk branches being continuation of the edge states in the extended zone revealing multiple self-crossings and bulk modes disconnected from the gap states by avoided crossing. Nearly all states in the system are localized due to the gradient, but topological edge states manifest much stronger localization than other states. Such strongly localized Floquet BICs coexist with localized Wannier-Stark-like bulk modes. Robustness of the edge Floquet states is confirmed by their passage through a localized edge defect in the form of a missing waveguide.

Two-dimensional nonlinear Thouless pumping of matter waves

We consider theoretically the nonlinear quantized Thouless pumping of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in a two-dimensional dynamical optical lattices. We encountered three different scenarios of the pumping: quasi-linear one occurring for gradually dispersing wave packets, transport carried by a single two-dimensional soliton, and multi-soliton regime when initial wave packet splits into several solitons. The scenario to be realized depends on the number of atoms in the initial wave packet and on the strength of the two-body interactions. The magnitude and direction of the displacement of a wavepacket are determined by Chern numbers of the populated energy bands and by the inter-band transitions induced by two-body interactions. As a case example we explore a separable potential created by optical lattices whose constitutive sublattices undergo relative motion in the orthogonal directions. For such potentials, obeying parity-time symmetry, fractional Chern numbers, computed over half period of the evolution, acquire relevance. We focus mainly on solitonic scenarios, showing that one-soliton pumping occurs at relatively small as well as at sufficiently large amplitudes of the initial wavepacket, while at intermediate amplitudes the transport is multi-solitonic. We also describe peculiarities of the pumping characterized by two different commensurate periods of the modulations of the lattices in the orthogonal directions.

Light bullets in moiré lattices

We predict that photonic moiré lattices produced by two mutually twisted periodic sublattices in the medium with Kerr nonlinearity can support stable three-dimensional light bullets localized in both space and time. Stability of light bullets and their properties are tightly connected with the properties of linear spatial eigenmodes of moiré lattice that undergo localization-delocalization transition (LDT) upon increase of the depth of one of the sublattices forming moiré lattice, but only for twist angles corresponding to incommensurate, aperiodic moiré structures. Above LDT threshold such incommensurate moiré lattices support stable light bullets without energy threshold. In contrast, commensurate, or periodic, moiré lattices arising at Pythagorean twist angles, whose eigenmodes are delocalized Bloch waves, can support stable light bullets only above certain energy threshold. Moiré lattices below LDT threshold cannot support stable light bullets for our parameters. Our results illustrate that periodicity/aperiodicity of the underlying lattice is a crucial factor determining stability properties of the nonlinear three-dimensional states.

Valley Hall edge solitons in a photonic graphene

We predict the existence and study properties of the valley Hall edge solitons in a composite photonic graphene with a domain wall between two honeycomb lattices with broken inversion symmetry. Inversion symmetry in our system is broken due to detuning introduced into constituent sublattices of the honeycomb structure. We show that nonlinear valley Hall edge states with sufficiently high amplitude bifurcating from the linear valley Hall edge state supported by the domain wall, can split into sets of bright spots due to development of the modulational instability, and that such an instability is a precursor for the formation of topological bright valley Hall edge solitons localized due to nonlinear self-action and travelling along the domain wall over large distances. Topological protection of the valley Hall edge solitons is demonstrated by modeling their passage through sharp corners of the $Ω$-shaped domain wall.

Vortex solitons in twisted circular waveguide arrays

We address the formation of topological states in twisted circular waveguide arrays and find that twisting leads to important differences of the fundamental properties of new vortex solitons with opposite topological charges that arise in the nonlinear regime. We find that such system features the rare property that clockwise and counter-clockwise vortex states are nonequivalent. Focusing on arrays with C_{6v} discrete rotation symmetry, we find that a longitudinal twist stabilizes the vortex solitons with the lowest topological charges m=+-1, which are always unstable in untwisted arrays with the same symmetry. Twisting also leads to the appearance of instability domains for otherwise stable solitons with m=+-2 and generates vortex modes with topological charges m=+-3 that are forbidden in untwisted arrays. By and large, we establish a rigorous relation between the discrete rotation symmetry of the array, its twist direction, and the possible soliton topological charges.

Dark topological valley Hall edge solitons

Topological edge solitons propagating along the edge of a photonic topological insulator are localized self-sustained hybrid states that are immune to de-fects/disorders due to protection of the edge states stemming from nontrivial topology of the system. Here, we predict that exceptionally robust dark valley Hall edge solitons may form at the domain walls between two honeycomb lattices with broken inversion sym-metry. The underlying structure can be created with femtosecond laser inscription, it possesses large bandgap where well-localized dark edge solitons form, and in contrast to systems with broken time-reversal symmetry, it does not require external magnetic fields or complex longitudinal waveguide modulations for reali-zation of the topological phase. We present the enve-lope equation allowing to construct dark valley Hall edge solitons analytically. Such solitons propagate without radiation into the bulk of the lattice, and can circumvent sharp corners, that allows to observe their persistent circulation along the closed triangular domain wall boundary. They survive over huge distances even in the presence of disorder in the underlying lattice. We also investigate interactions of closely located dark topological valley Hall edge solitons and show that they are repulsive and lead to the formation of two grey edge solitons, moving with different group velocities depart-ing from group velocity of the linear edge state on which initial dark solitons were constructed. Our results illus-trate that nonlinear valley Hall systems can support rich variety of new self-sustained topological states and may inspire their investigation in other nonlinear systems, such as atomic vapours and polariton condensates.

Spinor-Induced Instability of Kinks, Holes and Quantum Droplets

We address the existence and stability of one-dimensional (1D) holes and kinks and two-dimensional (2D) vortex-holes nested in extended binary Bose mixtures, which emerge in the presence of Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) quantum corrections to the mean-field energy, along with self-bound quantum droplets. We consider both the symmetric system with equal intra-species scattering lengths and atomic masses, modeled by a single (scalar) LHY-corrected Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), and the general asymmetric case with different intra-species scattering lengths, described by two coupled (spinor) GPEs. We found that in the symmetric setting, 1D and 2D holes can exist in a stable form within a range of chemical potentials that overlaps with that of self-bound quantum droplets, but that extends far beyond it. In this case, holes are found to be stable in 1D and they transform into pairs of stable out-of-phase kinks at the critical chemical potential at which localized droplets turn into flat-top states, thereby revealing the connection between localized and extended nonlinear states. In contrast, spinor nature of the asymmetric systems may lead to instability of 1D holes, which tend to break into two gray states moving in the opposite directions. Such instability arises due to spinor nature of the system and it affects only holes nested in extended modulationally-stable backgrounds, while localized quantum droplet families remain completely stable, even in the asymmetric case, while 1D holes remain stable only close to the point where they transform into pairs of kinks. We also found that symmetric systems allow fully stable 2D vortex-carrying single-charge states at moderate amplitudes, while unconventional instabilities appear also at high amplitudes. Symmetry also strongly inhibits instabilities for double-charge vortex-holes, which thus exhibit unexpectedly robust evolutions at low amplitudes.

Vector valley Hall edge solitons in superhoneycomb lattices

Topological edge solitons that bifurcate and inherit topological protection from linear edge states and, therefore, demonstrate immunity to disorder and defects upon propagation, attract considerable attention in a rapidly growing field of topological photonics. Valley Hall systems are especially interesting from the point of view of realization of topological edge solitons because they do not require external or artificial magnetic fields or longitudinal modulations of the underlying potential for the emergence of the topological phases. Here we report on the diverse types of vector valley Hall edge solitons forming at the domain walls between superhoneycomb lattices, including bright-dipole, bright-tripole, dark-bright, and dark-dipole solitons. In contrast to conventional scalar topological solitons, such vector states can be constructed as envelope solitons on the edge states from different branches and with different Bloch momenta. Such vector solitons can be remarkably robust, they show stable long-distance propagation and can bypass sharp bends of the domain wall. The existence of the counter-propagating valley Hall edge solitons at the same domain wall allows us to study their structural robustness upon collisions that can be nearly elastic. Our results illustrate richness of soliton families in the valley Hall systems and open new prospects for the light field manipulation and design of the nonlinear topological functional devices.

Quartic Kerr cavity combs: Bright and dark solitons

We theoretically investigate the dynamics, bifurcation structure and stability of localized states in Kerr cavities driven at the pure fourth-order dispersion point. Both the normal and anomalous group velocity dispersion regimes are analysed, highlighting the main differences with the standard second order dispersion case. In the anomalous regime, single and multi-peak localised states exist and are stable over a much wider region of the parameter space. In the normal dispersion regime, stable narrow bright solitons exist. Some of our findings can be understood by a new scenario reported here for the spatial eigenvalues, which imposes oscillatory tails to all localised states. To be published in Optics Letters.

Nonlinear Thouless pumping: solitons and transport breakdown

One-dimensional topological pumping of matter waves in two overlaid optical lattices moving with respect to each other is considered in the presence of attractive nonlinearity. It is shown that there exists a threshold nonlinearity level above which the matter transfer is completely arrested. Below this threshold the transfer of both dispersive wavepackets and solitons occurs in accordance with the predictions of the linear theory, i.e. it is quantized and determined by the dynamical Chern numbers of the lowest band. The breakdown of the transport is also explained by nontrivial topology of the bands. In that case, the nonlinearity induces Rabi oscillations of atoms between two (or more) lowest bands. If the sum of the dynamical Chern numbers of the populated bands is zero, the oscillatory dynamics of a matter soliton in space occurs, which corresponds to the transport breakdown. Otherwise the sum of the Chern numbers of the nonlinearity-excited bands determines the direction and magnitude of the average velocity of matter solitons that remains quantized and admits fractional values. Thus, even in strongly nonlinear regime the topology of the linear bands is responsible for the evolution of solitons. The transition between different dynamical regimes is accurately described by the perturbation theory for solitons.

Four-wave mixing Floquet topological soliton

We consider a topological Floquet insulator realized as a honeycomb array of helical waveguides imprinted in weakly birefringent medium. The system accounts for four-wave mixing occurring at a series of resonances arising due to Floquet phase matching. Under these resonant conditions, the system sustains stable linearly polarized and metastable elliptically polarized two-component edge solitons. Coupled nonlinear equations describing evolution of the envelopes of such solitons are derived.

Floquet Edge Multicolor Solitons

Topological insulators are unique physical structures that are insulators in their bulk, but support currents at their edges which can be unidirectional and topologically protected from scattering on disorder and inhomogeneities. Photonic topological insulators can be crafted in materials that exhibit a strong nonlinear response, thus opening the door to the exploration of the interplay between nonlinearity and topological effects. Among the fascinating new phenomena arising from this interplay is the formation of topological edge solitons -- hybrid asymmetric states localized across and along the interface due to different physical mechanisms. Such solitons have so far been studied only in materials with Kerr-type, or cubic, nonlinearity. Here the first example of the topological edge soliton supported by parametric interactions in $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear media is presented. Such solitons exist in Floquet topological insulators realized in arrays of helical waveguides made of a phase-matchable $χ^{(2)}$ material. Floquet edge solitons bifurcate from topological edge states in the spectrum of the fundamental frequency wave and remain localized over propagation distances drastically exceeding the helix period, while travelling along the edge of the structure. A theory of such states is developed. It is shown that multicolor solitons in a Floquet system exists in the vicinity of (formally infinite) set of linear resonances determined by the Floquet phase matching conditions. Away from resonance, soliton envelopes can be described by a period-averaged single nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an effective cubic nonlinear coefficient whose magnitude and sign depend on the overall phase-mismatch between the fundamental frequency and second harmonic waves.

Superexponential amplification, power blowup, and solitons sustained by non-Hermitian gauge potentials

We introduce a continuous one-dimensional non-Hermitian matrix gauge potential and study its effect on dynamics of a two-component field. The model is emulated by a system of evanescently coupled nonlinear waveguides with distributed gain and losses. The considered gauge fields lead to a variety of unusual physical phenomena in both linear and nonlinear regimes. In the linear regime, the field may undergo superexponential convective amplification. A total power of an input Gaussian beam may exhibit a finite-distance blowup, which manifests itself in absolute delocalization of the beam at a finite propagation distance, where the amplitude of the field remains finite. The defocusing Kerr nonlinearity initially enhances superexponential amplification, while at larger distances it suppresses the growth of the total power. The focusing nonlinearity at small distances slows down the power growth and eventually leads to the development of the modulational instability. Complex periodic gauge fields lead to the formation of families of stable fundamental and dipole solitons.

Floquet defect solitons

We consider an array of straight nonlinear waveguides constituting a two-dimensional square lattice, with a few central layers tilted with respect to the rest of the structure. It is shown that such configuration represents a line defect, in the lattice plane, which is periodically modulated along the propagation direction. In the linear limit, such a system sustains line defect modes, whose number coincides with the number of tilted layers. In the presence of nonlinearity the branches of defect solitons propagating along the defect line bifurcate from each of the linear defect modes. Depending on the effective dispersion induced by the Floquet spectrum of the underline system the bifurcating solitons can be either bright or dark. Dynamics and stability of such solitons are studied numerically.

Multi-frequency solitons in commensurate-incommensurate photonic moiré lattices

We predict that photonic moiré patterns created by two mutually twisted periodic sublattices in quadratic nonlinear media allow the formation of parametric solitons under conditions that are strongly impacted by the geometry of the pattern. The question addressed here is how the geometry affects the joint trapping of multiple parametrically-coupled waves into a single soliton state. We show that above the localization-delocalization transition the threshold power for soliton excitation is drastically reduced relative to uniform media. Also, the geometry of the moiré pattern shifts the condition for phase-matching between the waves to the value that matches the edges of the eigenmode bands, thereby shifting the properties of all soliton families. Moreover, the phase-mismatch bandwidth for soliton generation is dramatically broadened in the moiré patterns relative to latticeless structures.

Metastable two-component solitons near an exceptional point

We consider a two-dimensional nonlinear waveguide with distributed gain and losses. The optical potential describing the system consists of an unperturbed complex potential depending only on one transverse coordinate, i.e., corresponding to a planar waveguide, and a small non-separable perturbation depending on both transverse coordinates. It is assumed that the spectrum of the unperturbed planar waveguide features an exceptional point (EP), while the perturbation drives the system into the unbroken phase. Slightly below the EP, the waveguide sustains two-component envelope solitons. We derive one-dimensional equations for the slowly varying envelopes of the components and show their stable propagation. When both traverse directions are taken into account within the framework of the original model, the obtained two-component bright solitons become metastable and persist over remarkably long propagation distances.

Theory of Topological Corner State Laser in Kagome Waveguide Arrays

In comparison with conventional lasers, topological lasers are more robust and can be immune to disorder or de-fects if lasing occurs in topologically protected states. Previously reported topological lasers were almost exclu-sively based on the first-order photonic topological insulators. Here, we show that lasing can be achieved in the zero-dimensional corner state in a second-order photonic topological insulator, which is based on Kagome wave-guide array with a rhombic configuration. If gain is present in the corner of the structure, where topological corner state resides, stable lasing in this state is achieved, with lowest possible threshold, in the presence of uniform loss-es and two-photon absorption. When gain acts in other corners of the structure, lasing may occur in edge or bulk states, but it requires substantially larger thresholds and transition to stable lasing occurs over much larger propa-gation distances, sometimes due to instabilities, which are absent for lasing in corner states. We find that increasing two-photon absorption generally plays strong stabilizing action for nonlinear lasing states. The transition to stable lasing stimulated by noisy inputs is illustrated. Our work demonstrates the realistic setting for corner state laser based on higher-order topological insulator realised with waveguide arrays.
