Compact stationary fluxons in the Josephson junction ladder

Stationary compact fluxon profiles are shown to be exact solutions of the inductively coupled and dc-biased Josephson junction ladder. Such states do not exist in the parallel Josephson junction array which is described by the standard discrete sine-Gordon equation. It is shown that there are compact fluxon and multi-fluxon states which either satisfy the top-bottom antisymmetry or are asymmetric. The anti-symmetric states have zero energy if their topological charge is even and the asymmetric states always have zero energy. Depending on the anisotropy constant the compact fluxons can either coexist with the non-compact states or only compact states are possible. External magnetic field prevents compact state existence.

Spectral properties of the ladder-like Josephson junction array

In this paper theoretical analysis of the ladder-like multirow array of inductively coupled Josephson junctions is presented. An external dc current is applied at the top to each of the columns of the array and is extracted at the bottom of that column. The density of states of the Josephson plasma waves has a $δ$-function term due to the flat band and $3N-2$ singularities where $N$ is the number of rows. The spatial distribution of the amplitudes of the plasmon wave is computed analytically for any given value of the wavenumber $q$. It is expressed through the orthogonal polynomials that are similar but not identical to the Chebyshev polynomials.

Influence of a squeezed prewell on tunneling properties and bound states in heterostructures

A resonant tunneling effect of an extremely thin potential well on the transmission of charged particles through a planar heterostructure with an arbitrary potential profile is investigated in a squeezing limit as the well width tends to zero. In this limit, the transmission probability through the structure is shown to be blocked for all the parameter values of the well, except a resonance set of Lebesgue measure zero. The peak-to-valley ratio is shown to increase crucially with the squeezing of the well: the thinner is its thickness, the resonant peaks become sharper and localized at isolated points. Contrary, a discrete spectrum of the heterostructure (if any) does exist both on the resonance set and beyond it, however, the squeezing scenario here turns out to be quite interesting and sophisticated.

Discreteness effects on the fluxon interaction with the dipole impurity in the Josephson transmission line

The influence of discreteness on the fluxon scattering on the dipole-like impurity is studied. This kind of impurity is used to model the qubit inductively coupled to the Josephson transmission line (JTL). The previously proposed fluxon assisted readout process of the qubit state is based on measuring the passage time through the dipole impurity. The aim of this work is to clarify the role of the discreteness in this qubit readout process. It is demonstrated that the fluxon delay time on the qubit impurity increases significantly if the discreteness of the JTL increases. Also it is shown that the difference between the fluxon threshold currents for the positive and negative qubits decreases with the increase of discreteness.

Conditions for realizing one-point interactions from a multi-layer structure model

A heterostructure composed of $N$ parallel homogeneous layers is studied in the limit as their widths $l_1, \ldots , l_N$ shrink to zero. The problem is investigated in one dimension and the piecewise constant potential in the Schrödinger equation is given by the strengths $V_1, \ldots , V_N$ as functions of $l_1, \ldots , l_N$, respectively. The key point is the derivation of the conditions on the functions $V_1(l_1), \ldots , V_N(l_N)$ for realizing a family of one-point interactions as $l_1, \ldots , l_N$ tend to zero along available paths in the $N$-dimensional space. The existence of equations for a squeezed structure, the solution of which determines the system parameter values, under which the non-zero tunneling of quantum particles through a multi-layer structure occurs, is shown to exist and depend on the paths. This tunneling appears as a result of an appropriate cancellation of divergences.

Flat and almost flat bands in the quasi-one-dimensional Josephson junction array

The dispersion law for the linear waves in the quasi-one-dimensional array of inductively coupled Josephson junctions (JJ) is derived. The array has a multiladder structure that consists of the finite number of rows ($N\ge 2$) in $Y$ direction and is infinite in $X$ direction. The spectrum of the linear waves (Josephson plasmons) consists of $2N-1$ branches. Among these branches there is a $N$-fold completely flat degenerate one that coincides with the Josephson plasma frequency. The remaining $N-1$ branches have a standard Josephson plasmon dispersion law typical for 1D JJ arrays. Application of the uniform dc bias on the top of each vertical column of junctions lifts the degeneracy and only one flat branch remains unchanged. The rest of the previously flat branches become weakly dispersive. The parameter range where the flatness of these branches is maximal has been discussed.

Scattering data and bound states of a squeezed double-layer structure

A heterostructure composed of two parallel homogeneous layers is studied in the limit as their widths $l_1$ and $l_2$, and the distance between them $r$ shrinks to zero simultaneously. The problem is investigated in one dimension and the squeezing potential in the Schrödinger equation is given by the strengths $V_1$ and $V_2$ depending on the layer thickness. A whole class of functions $V_1(l_1)$ and $V_2(l_2)$ is specified by certain limit characteristics as $l_1$ and $l_2$ tend to zero. The squeezing limit of the scattering data $a(k)$ and $b(k)$ derived for the finite system is shown to exist only if some conditions on the system parameters $V_j$, $l_j$, $j=1,2$, and $r$ take place. These conditions appear as a result of an appropriate cancellation of divergences. Two ways of this cancellation are carried out and the corresponding two resonance sets in the system parameter space are derived. On one of these sets, the existence of non-trivial bound states is proven in the squeezing limit, including the particular example of the squeezed potential in the form of the derivative of Dirac's delta function, contrary to the widespread opinion on the non-existence of bound states in $δ'$-like systems. The scenario how a single bound state survives in the squeezed system from a finite number of bound states in the finite system is described in detail.

Fluxon interaction with the finite-size dipole impurity

Interaction of the fluxon with the finite size dipole impurity in the long Josephson junction is investigated. The impurity has polarity and will be referred to as a {\it dipole} impurity because it also has a direction and, consequently, changes its sign under the space inversion transform $x \to -x$. Such a model is used to describe the inductively coupled to the Josephson transmission line qubit and the misaligned Abrikosov vortex that penetrates into the long Josephson junction. We derive the approximate equations of motion for the fluxon center of mass and its velocity. With the help of these equations we demonstrate that pinning and scattering of the fluxon on the impurity differs significantly from the case of the point impurity which is modelled by the derivative of the Dirac's $δ$-function

Embedded solitons in the double sine-Gordon lattice with the next neighbor interactions

Topological solitons can propagate without radiation in discrete media. These solutions are known as embedded solitons (ES). They come as isolated solutions and exist despite their resonance with the linear spectrum of the respective lattices. In this paper the properties of embedded solitons in the discrete double sine-Gordon equation with the next-neighbor and second-neighbor interactions are investigated. Depending on the sign of these interactions they can be either destructive or favorable for the ES creation. The ES existence area depends on the width of the linear spectrum: narrowing of the spectrum widens the ES existence range and vice versa. The application to the Josephson junction arrays is discussed.

Nonlinear waves in a model for silicate layers

Some layered silicates are composed of positive ions, surrounded by layers of ions with opposite sign. Mica muscovite is a particularly interesting material, because there exist fossil and experimental evidence for nonlinear excitations transporting localized energy and charge along the cation rows within the potassium layers. This evidence suggest that there are different kinds of excitations with different energies and properties. Some of the authors proposed recently a one-dimensional model based in physical principles and the silicate structure. The main characteristic of the model is that it has a hard substrate potential and two different repulsion terms, between ions and nuclei. In a previous work with this model, it was found the propagation of crowdions, i.e., lattice kinks in a lattice with substrate potential that transport mass and charge. They have a single specific velocity and energy coherent with the experimental data. In the present work we perform a much more thorough search for nonlinear excitations in the same model using the pseudospectral method to obtain exact nanopteron solutions, which are single kinks with tails, crowdions and bi-crowdions. We analyze their velocities, energies and stability or instability and the possible reasons for the latter. We relate the different excitations with their possible origin from recoils from different beta decays and with the fossil tracks. We explore the consequences of some variation of the physical parameters because their values are not perfectly known. Through a different method, we also have found stationary and moving breathers, that is, localized nonlinear excitations with an internal vibration. Moving breathers have small amplitude and energy, which is also coherent with the fossil evidence.

Radiation emission due to fluxon scattering on inhomogeneity in large two-dimensional Josephson junction

Interaction of a fluxon in the two-dimensional large Josephson junction with the finite area inhomogeneity is studied within the sine-Gordon theory. The spectral density of the emitted plane waves is computed exactly for the rectangular and rhombic inhomogeneities. Total emitted energy as a function of the fluxon velocity exhibits at least one local maximum. Connection to the previously studied limiting cases including the point impurity and the one-dimensional limit has been performed. An important feature o f the emitted energy as a function of the fluxon velocity is a clear maximum (or maxima). The dependence of these maxima on the geometric properties of the impurity has been studied in detail.

Fluxon mobility in an asymmetric SQUID array

Fluxon dynamics in the dc-biased array of asymmetric three-junction superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) is investigated. The array of SQUIDs is described by the discrete double sine-Gordon equation. It appears that this equation possesses a finite set of velocities at which the fluxon propagates with the constant shape and without radiation. The signatures of these velocities appear on the respective current-voltage characteristics of the array as inaccessible voltage intervals (gaps). The critical depinning current has a clear minimum as a function of the asymmetry parameter (the ratio of the critical currents of the left and right junctions of the SQUID), which coincides with the minimum of the Peierls-Nabarro potential.

Stability of mode-locked kinks in the ac driven and damped sine-Gordon lattice

Kink dynamics in the underdamped and strongly discrete sine-Gordon lattice that is driven by the oscillating force is studied. The investigation is focused mostly on the properties of the mode-locked states in the {\it overband} case, when the driving frequency lies above the linear band. With the help of Floquet theory it is demonstrated that the destabilizing of the mode-locked state happens either through the Hopf bifurcation or through the tangential bifurcation. It is also observed that in the overband case the standing mode-locked kink state maintains its stability for the bias amplitudes that are by the order of magnitude larger than the amplitudes in the low-frequency case.

Scattering of quasi-one-dimensional solitons on impurities in large Josephson junctions

Fluxon transmission through impurities of different shape in a quasi-one-dimensional long Josephson junction is investigated. The junction width is significantly less than its length but, at the same time, is of the order of the Josephson penetration length $λ_J$ or exceeds it. The retrapping current on the impurities of the point, line and rectangular shape is computed as a function of the junction width both numerically and analytically. Good agreement between the analytic formulae and the numerical simulation results for the intermediate (several $λ_J$) junction width is observed.

Asymmetric ac fluxon depinning in a Josephson junction array: A highly discrete limit

Directed motion and depinning of topological solitons in a strongly discrete damped and biharmonically ac-driven array of Josephson junctions is studied. The mechanism of the depinning transition is investigated in detail. We show that the depinning process takes place through chaotization of an initially standing fluxon periodic orbit. Detailed investigation of the Floquet multipliers of these orbits shows that depending on the depinning parameters (either the driving amplitude or the phase shift between harmonics) the chaotization process can take place either along the period-doubling scenario or due to the type-I intermittency.

Directed motion of domain walls in biaxial ferromagnets under the influence of periodic external magnetic fields

Directed motion of domain walls (DWs) in a classical biaxial ferromagnet placed under the influence of periodic unbiased external magnetic fields is investigated. Using the symmetry approach developed in this article the necessary conditions for the directed DW motion are found. This motion turns out to be possible if the magnetic field is applied along the most easy axis. The symmetry approach prohibits the directed DW motion if the magnetic field is applied along any of the hard axes. With the help of the soliton perturbation theory and numerical simulations, the average DW velocity as a function of different system parameters such as damping constant, amplitude, and frequency of the external field, is computed.

Resonant fluxon transmission through impurities

Fluxon transmission through several impurities of different strength and type (i.e., microshorts and microresistors), placed in a long Josephson junction is investigated. Threshold pinning current on the impurities is computed as a function of the distance between them, their amplitudes and the dissipation parameter. It is shown that in the case of consequently placed microshorts or microresistors, the threshold pinning current exhibits a clear minimum as a function of the distance between the impurities. In the case of a microresistor, followed by a microshort, an opposite phenomenon is observed, namely the threshold pinning current exhibits maximum as a function of the distance between the impurities.

Discrete soliton ratchets driven by biharmonic fields

Directed motion of topological solitons (kinks or antikinks) in the damped and AC-driven discrete sine-Gordon system is investigated. We show that if the driving field breaks certain time-space symmetries, the soliton can perform unidirectional motion. The phenomenon resembles the well known effects of ratchet transport and nonlinear harmonic mixing. Direction of the motion and its velocity depends on the shape of the AC drive. Necessary conditions for the occurrence of the effect are formulated. In comparison with the previously studied continuum case, the discrete case shows a number of new features: non-zero depinning threshold for the driving amplitude, locking to the rational fractions of the driving frequency, and diffusive ratchet motion in the case of weak intersite coupling.
