Coordinating Spinal and Limb Dynamics for Enhanced Sprawling Robot Mobility

Sprawling locomotion in vertebrates, particularly salamanders, demonstrates how body undulation and spinal mobility enhance stability, maneuverability, and adaptability across complex terrains. While prior work has separately explored biologically inspired gait design or deep reinforcement learning (DRL), these approaches face inherent limitations: open-loop gait designs often lack adaptability to unforeseen terrain variations, whereas end-to-end DRL methods are data-hungry and prone to unstable behaviors when transferring from simulation to real robots. We propose a hybrid control framework that integrates Hildebrand's biologically grounded gait design with DRL, enabling a salamander-inspired quadruped robot to exploit active spinal joints for robust crawling motion. Our evaluation across multiple robot configurations in target-directed navigation tasks reveals that this hybrid approach systematically improves robustness under environmental uncertainties such as surface irregularities. By bridging structured gait design with learning-based methodology, our work highlights the promise of interdisciplinary control strategies for developing efficient, resilient, and biologically informed spinal actuation in robotic systems.

Field-mediated locomotor dynamics on highly deformable surfaces

In many systems motion occurs on deformed and deformable surfaces, setting up the possibility for dynamical interactions solely mediated by the coupling of the entities with their environment. Here we study the "two-body" dynamics of robot locomotion on a highly deformable spandex membrane in two scenarios: one in which a robot orbits a large central depression and the other where the two robots affect each other's motion solely through mutual environmental deformations. Inspired by the resemblance of the orbits of the single robot with those of general relativistic orbits around black holes, we recast the vehicle plus membrane dynamics in physical space into the geodesic motion of a "test particle" in a fiducial curved space-time and demonstrate how this framework facilitates understanding the observed dynamics. The two-robot problem also exhibits a resemblance with Einstein's general relativistic view of gravity, which in the words of Wheeler: "spacetime tells matter how to move; matter tells spacetime how to curve." We generalize this case the mapping to include a reciprocal coupling that translates into robotic curvature-based control schemes which modify interaction (promoting avoidance or aggregation) without long-range sensing. Our work provides a starting point for developing a mechanical analog gravity system as well as develops a framework that can provide insights into active matter in deformable environments and robot exploration in complex landscapes.

A fast and practical grid based algorithm for point-feature label placement problem

Point-feature label placement (PFLP) is a major area of interest within the filed of automated cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), and computer graphics. The objective of a label placement problem is to assign a label to each point feature so as to avoid conflicts, considering the cartographic conventions. According to computational complexity analysis, the labeling problem has been shown to be NP-Hard. It is also very challenging to find a computationally efficient algorithm that is intended to be used for both static and dynamic map labeling. In this paper, we propose a heuristic method that first fills the free space of the map with rectangular shape labels like a grid and then matches the corresponding point feature with the nearest label. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated through empirical tests with different data set sizes. The results show that our algorithm based on grid placement of labels is a useful, fast and practical solution for automated map labeling.
